The finding the natural ingredients for improvement of diarrhea without side effect is considered as a dream of many scientists. Unfortunately, many compounds found effective in initial studying failed to confirm the potential in large sample size and multi center. Some even produce conflicted results in second and further studies.

Diarrhea is a condition of passing of loose or watery stools as a result of viruses (rotavirus, norovirus, etc.), bacteria (food poisoning, E coli), parasites effects, intestinal disorders, fat mal-absorption, laxative abuse ..., etc. alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids and terpenes.

Recent studies back by respectable institutions suggested that ginger, may have a therapeutic values used for reduced risk and treatment of diarrhea, particular in underdevelopment countries where sanitation is a problem. According to Dr. Gao F., diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome can be treated by ginger-partitioned moxibustion and acupoint application(1).

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil. It has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

According to the United Graduate School of Veterinary Sciences, zingerone can inhibit colonic motility via direct action on smooth muscles of that may might exert beneficial therapeutic effects on diarrhea by excessive gastrointestinal motility(2).

In Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli heat-labile enterotoxin (LT)-induced diarrhea animal model, chemically synthesized zingerone derivatives, compound 31 (2-[(4-methoxybenzyl)oxy]benzoic acid) significantly suppressed LT-induced diarrhea in mice through phase one cell cycle arrest(3).

Yogurt, a foods food produced by bacterial fermentation of milk may also be used for treatment of diarrhea(4).According to the China Medical University, yogart as probiotic effectively treat diarrhea in patients with diarrhea within 15 days(4).
In acute diarrhea in 6-24-month-old hospitalized infants, Yogurt treatment significantly improved mean hospitalization days, reduced diarrhea frequency and weight gain, according to Dr. Pashapour N and Dr. Iou SG.(5).Furthermore, according to the joint study lead by the University of Tasmania, yogurt, containing containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG), Bifidobacterium lactis (Bb-12) and Lactobacillus acidophilus (La-5) may be effective for reducing the incidence of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea in children(6).

Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants, in recent studies also expressed its anti diarrhea effects up to 57% in test subjects(7). In the comparison of Warfarin and Banana Flakes Supplement on diarrhea, researchers at the showed that oral administration of dried banana flakes treat diarrhea effectively and subsequent decrease in the rate and extent of diarrhea(8), according to the Thomas Jefferson University.
Dr. Rabbani GH and colleagues at the Centre Health and Population Research, Bangladesh in the investigation of the effects of green banana and pectin suggested, green banana mediated the stimulation of colonic small bowel absorption through their antidiarrheal and colonotrophic effects(9).

The discovery of simple ingredients which can be found easily in the market of third world countries may act as a cornerstone for the development of potential and functional foods for reduced risk and treatment of Diarrhea.
People with higher risk of diarrhea due to digestive problem and family history should drink at least one serving a day and people with diarrhea should drink 4 servings daily, depending to the digestive toleration.
