Eyebright ( Euphrasia) Demonstrates Antihyperglycemic Activity in Vivo

Hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Most cases of hyperglycemia occurred in patients who do not manage their diabetes properly.

In other words, hyperglycemia is a hallmark in patients with diabetes, the condition can also occur to people without diabetes due to a certain medical condition such as pneumonia in the elderly.

Untreated hyperglycemia has been found to induce ketoacidosis characterized by the symptoms of shortness of breath, breath that smells fruity and gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea, vomiting, and dry mouth.

Over the long-term, persistently mild hyperglycemia can lead to complications in the eyes, kidneys, and nerve damage and heart disease, and stroke.

Most cases of hyperglycemia can be controlled by the following diabetes guidance.

By eating a healthy diet high in fiber, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes (beans, peas, and lentils), whole-wheat flour and wheat bran, accompanied by healthy fish, patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes can control their blood glucose without worrying the onset of hyperglycemia.

The most common causes of hyperglycemia are associated with an uncontrolled diet, improper use of insulin, and skip diabetic medication.

The most common symptoms of hyperglycemia are increased thirst frequent urination, fatigue (weak, and unintended weight loss. In severe cases, some patients may also experience symptoms of headaches, trouble concentrating, and blurred vision.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of high blood glucose, scientists examined the effects of the aqueous extract of the leaf of Euphrasia officinale.

Eyebright is one of the species of flowering plants, genus Euphrasia, belonging to the family Orobanchaceae, native to Europe.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat eye infection and to relieve inflammation caused by colds, coughs, sinus infections, sore throats, and hay fever.

The study included selected rats that were assigned to healthy normal or alloxan-induced diabetic rats

According to tested analysis and compared to the levels of blood glucose levels in normal and alloxan-diabetic rats

* Treatment of alloxan-induced diabetic rats showed a strong effect by bringing down the raised glucose levels,

* The extract administration exerted a significant activity against hypoglycemia in normal and diabetic induced rats.

In other words, the aqueous extract of the leaf of Euphrasia officinale. not only has a strong activity against levels of blood glucose but also ameliorated the hyperglycemia in diabetic experimental rats.

Taken altogether, Eyebright (Euphrasia)may be considered a remedy for the treatment of hyperglycemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
