All About Vitamins: Vitamin B6 for Treatment of Anxiety

By Kyle J. Norton.

Vitamin B6 may have an positive effect in reduced levels of anxiety, some scientists suggested.

Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, is a water soluble vitamin found abundantly in green peas, yams, broccoli, asparagus and turnip greens,Peanuts, sunflower seeds, cashews and hazelnuts, meat, fish etc., with functions of amino acid, carbohydrate metabolism, brain health, and liver detoxification, etc.

Anxiety, a psychological symptom caused by a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, particularly about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.

According a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled and crossover design study to investigate single and combined effects of daily dietary supplementation with 50 mg of vitamin B6 and 200 mg magnesium (as MgO) for one cycle for the relief of mild premenstrual symptoms, among 44 assigned to treatments daily for one menstrual cycle: (1) 200 mg Mg, (2) 50 mg vitamin B6, (3) 200 mg Mg + 50 mg vitamin B6 and (4) placebo, after taking into account of other risk factors, researchers showed that treatment with 200 mg/day Mg + 50 mg/day vitamin B6 expressed a significant reduction of anxiety-related premenstrual symptoms (nervous tension, mood swings, irritability, or anxiety) in compared to other treated groups, specially in mild premenstrual anxiety-related symptoms.

Other in the study to evaluate the effect of combination of Magne-B6 used, in the treatment of 25 patients with different forms of epilepsy with psychiatric status of patients featured by depression, anxiety and some psychotic sighs researchers indicated that according to the results of self-rating scales for Zung anxiety and depression scale, SCL-90 and Global clinical impression (CGI) scale, the combination display a strong effect in non-specific influence on patient's mental state at between the 14 - 28 days of treatment without inducing serious side effects.

Taking altogethers, Vitamin B6 may be used alone or conjunction with other minerals supplement for treatment of anxiety.

All Above Vitamins: The Effect of Vitamin B6 on Central Nervous System

By Kyle J. Norton.

Central nervous system is a part of nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord.

Vitamin B6 may have a profound and positive effect in reduced neuro toxicity used conjunction with other herbal medicine, some scientists suggested

In a study to investigate the neuroprotective role of grape seed extract and/or vitamin B6 against Triton WR-1339 -induced neurotoxicity, with 35 adult male albino rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain, weighing 140-145 g, divided into five groups: control, triton, grape seed extract + triton, grape seed extract + triton + vitamin B6, and vitamin B6 + tritonresearchers at the Alexandria University found that application of grape seed extract and/or vitamin B6 demonstrated a significant effect in attentuated disturbances in the hematological parameters, the neurological functions, and the antioxidant profile, caused py injection of the above product.

Further analysis suggested that grape seed extract and/or vitamin B6 protect against neuro damage caused by Triton WR-1339 through over expression of antioxidative and antiapoptotic capacities.

In support to the above study, researchers at the Laboratori di Ricerca della FIDIA S.p.A, launched a study to examine the effect of a brain cortex phospholipids (BC-PL) and vit. B6 association on animal behaviour and enzymatic activities specific for CNS postulated that although vitamin B6 showed a strong positive influence to BC-PL and  activities, the results obtained are very different in compared to  methamphetamine used for treatment of CNS.

The result suggests a different mechanism of action at CNS level, according to the motility and avoidance tests and cerebral L-amino acid aromatic decarboxylase assays.

Taking together, there is no doubt that vitmain B6 has a intrigue effect in improved and protective central nervous system activities.

All About Vitamins: Vitamin B6 Deficiency and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

By Kyle J. Norton.

Vitamin B6 may have a positive and profound impact in reduced risk of type 2 diabetes in patients with depression and other conditions, some studies suggested

Depression is a normal response as part of our daily lives such as the loss of s job, the death of a love one, and illness. Over 30 million Americans suffer from depression and the amount is increasing in an alarming rate.

Diabetes is a medical condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

According to Dr. Oxenkrug G, the lead author in the investigate the effects of vitamin B6 deficiency in risk of type 2 diabetes, as a cofactor of the key enzymes in regulating trytrophan metabolism, suggested that vitamin B6 deficiency may alter the formation of co enzyme (NAD) towards production of xanthurenic (XA) and kynurenic (KYNA) acids, which have a strong impact in the production, release and biological activity of insulin.

Where Xanthurenic acid is excreted by pyridoxine (vitamin B6) deficient and Kynurenic acid is a product of the normal metabolism of amino acid L-tryptophan.

The study also indicated that increased intake of vitamin B6 supplement and monitored formation of diabetogenic KYN derivatives might help to identify subjects-at-risk for the development of diabetes.

Further analysis, the authors also said, "Pharmacological down-regulation of the TRP - KYN - NAD pathway and maintenance of adequate vitamin B6 status might help to prevent the development of diabetes in depression and other conditions associated with inflammation/stress- induced excessive production of KYN and vitamin B6 deficiency, e.g., o".

In support to the above differentiation, the Tufts University School of Medicine conducted a study to review literature published data for evidences that dysregulation of tryptophan (TRP)-kynurenine (KYN) and KYN-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) metabolic pathways is one of the mechanisms of IR suggested that vitamin B6 deficiency may impair the function of key enzymes of tryptophan (TRP)-kynurenine (KYN) and KYN-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) in production, release, and biological activity of insulin, thus increasing risk of type 2 development.

Taking together, thee is no doubt that vitamin B6 deficiency may have a significant effect in the onset of type 2 diabetes by alternating the production, release, and biological activity of insulin, through trytophan metabolic pathway.

All About Vitamins: Vitamin B6 deficiency in Risk of Hyperhomocysteinaemia

By Kyle J. Norton.

Vitamin B6 deficiency may have a strong implication on  hyperhomocysteinaemia in increased risk of cardiovascular disease, some studies suggested

Homocysteinaemia, a maker for heart disease development, is a medical condition characterized by an abnormally level of homocysteine in the blood stream.

According to the study conducted by the The Aga Khan University, to evaluate the homocysteine levels of 290 apparently healthy hospital personnel from institutions in two cities of Pakistan, deficiency of vitamin B6 and other vitamins may be associated to higher risk of  homocysteine in compared to control.

Indeed, Dr. Iqbal MP, the lead author indicated that serum/plasma levels of micro nutrients have a significant negatively correlated with plasma homocysteine.

In other word, Deficiency of certain micro nutrients, including vitamin B6 may increase substantial risk to hyperhomocysteinaemia.

The result strongly support that mass micro nutrient supplementation are necessary in this group of people to prevent the high incidence of cardiovascular disease.

Other study in the instigation of the same group of Pakistani people, involving 224 AMI patients (age 30-70 years; 55 females and 169 males) and 126 normal healthy subjects (age 31-70 years; 35 females and 91 males) for risk of hyperhomocysteinaemia in micro nutrients deficiency aspects, researchers showed that a lower levels of vitamin B6 and other micro nutrients, including folate and vitamin B6 demonstrated a significant effect in the onset of hyperhomocysteinaemia in both control and study group.

Dr. Iqbal MP, the lead author said, "Substantial nutritional deficiencies of these three vitamins along with mild hyperhomocysteinemia, perhaps through an interplay with the classical cardiovascular risk factors".

Taking altogether, vitamin B6 may have a profound effect in combined with deficiencies of other nutrients in induced risk of hyperhomocysteinaemia development, a marker of CVD.

All About Vitamins: Vitamin B6 In reduced Risk of hypertriglyceridemia

By Kyle J. Norton.

Vitamin B6 may have a positive and profound effect in reduced risk of hypertriglyceridemia some studies suggested.

In the study to investigate the effect of lysine, vitamin B(6), and carnitine supplementation on both glycemia and the lipid profiles, specifically triglyceride (TG) levels of a total of 85 hypertriglyceridemic (TG> 150 mg/dL) male patients randomizedly assigned to 1 of 5 groups given supplements of lysine (1 g/d), vitamin B(6) (50 mg/d), lysine (1 g/d) + vitamin B(6) (50 mg/d), carnitine (1 g/d), or placebo for 12 weeks, after taking into account of other con founders, researchers filed the following report
1. VitaminB(6) supplementation given in an equated amount was associated with a significant reduction in total cholesterol and HDL-C of 10%.
2. Plasma total cholesterol TG was reduced by 36.6 mg/dL at 6 weeks
3. Administration of lysine and carnitine groups showed no change in lipid file

Interestingly, although chemical compound lysine and carnitine play an important role in alternating fat metabolism to induce hypertriglyceridemia, they have no impact in expression of total cholesterol and HDL-C concentrations

Further analysis, Dr. Hlais S the dead author said, "Vitamin B(6) supplementation in these male patients with hypertriglyceridemia reduced plasma total cholesterol and HDL-C concentrations".

Other in the study to investigate the effect of elevated plasma concentrations of homocysteine, a sulfur-containing amino acid, are a risk factor for coronary, cerebral and peripheral artery disease caused by vitamin B6 and other micro nutrients deficiency suggested that the use of addition of folic acid, vitamin B12 and B6 to fibrates reduced intake of two important classes of drugs, lipid-lowering drugs and anti-hypertensive drugs, on homocysteine metabolism for prevention of CVD.

Dr. said, "(drugs) used for treatment of hypertriglyceridemia and low HDL-cholesterol, are associated with an increase of homocysteine by 20%-50%".

Taking altogether, vitamin B6 have a significant effect in reduced risk of CVD through lowering the levels of bad cholesterol and total cholesterol and reduced production of  homocysteine drugs used for treatment hypertriglyceridemia.

All About Vitamins: Vitamin B6 In decreased Symptoms Severity In Premenstrual Syndrome

By Kyle J. Norton.

Vitamin B6 may have a strong impact in reduced symptoms in women with premenstrual syndrome, a renowned institute study suggested.

Premenstrual syndrome is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, as a result of hormone fluctuation and occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts, effecting over 70% to 90% of women in the US.

In the study of 84 female students lived at the university dorm, randomly selected and allocated into two groups of 42 with the first group received auriculotherapy (10 sessions) for two menstrual cycles and the second group consumed 40 mg of vitamin B6 daily from a week before their menstruation for two menstrual cycles, after examining the returned questionnaire, researchers filed the following results
1. Both groups showed a significant difference compared to before the intervention
2. Vitamin B6 treated group displayed a mean score of 22.60 (10.87) and 24.17 (14.15), in the first and second cycles in compared to the auriculotherapy group of 26.70 (19.49) and 24.76 (17.07)
3. After considering other risk factors, in comparing the total score of symptoms in the first and second cycles after the intervention, both groups showed no significant difference.

In other word, both vitamin B6 and  auriculotherapic treatment expressed an decreased symptoms of  premenstrual syndrome.

Additionally, in a two-stage double-blind clinical trial conducted on 126 women and randomly allocated into 3 groups to receive magnesium, vitamin B6, or placebo performed in 10 selected health centers in Isfahan and lasted for 4 months, researchers reported that all groups showed a significantly decreased the mean scores of premenstrual syndrome after the intervention.

However, in compared to magnesium treatment group, vitamin B6 and placebo had the most and least efficiency in improving the mean premenstrual syndrome score.

Interestingly, in a double blind randomized controlled carried out on 76 students of Hamadan University of Medical Sciences and randomly allocated to two groups, 38 people in each group either received calcium tablet (500mg) and vitamin B6 (40 mg) or only vitamin B6 twice a day for two consecutive months, researchers indicated that although vitamin B6 alone treatment group expressed some improvement of symptoms pf PMS, but combination of calcium and vitamin B6 are far more better in controlling of the premenstrual syndrome symptoms.

Taking altogether, There is no doubt that vitamin B6 may be recommended as a potential and therapeutic supplement in reduced the severity of symptoms of PMS.

All About Vitamins: Vitamin B6 in Improved Infant childhood Neuromotor Activities

By Kyle J. Norton.

Vitamin B6 deficiency may have a strong impact in behavioral effects in child neuro development, a renowned study suggested.

In animal study to investigate behavioral effects of preweaning pyridoxine deficiency, researchers filed the following results
1. Rat with vitamin B6 deficiency expressed less the body weight in compared to control
2. The vitamin B6 deficiency rat also displayed a delay of supported standing and eye opening
3. Reduced open-field activity reflected by the exploratory score was also observed in vitamin-deficient rats

Dr. Krishna AP, after taking account of other co founders said, "considerable effects of prenatal pyridoxine deficiency were observed in the neonatal pups as stunting of growth and in the delayed onset of neuromotor coordination as well as a low level of open-field activity".

These results reflected the important role of of maternal pyridoxine supplementation during pregnancy in reduced risk of child neuro development abnormality, particularly in neuromotor coordinations.

Other, in the support of the above analysis, researchers at the A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, conducted a review of the effect of preweaning pyridoxine deficiency in induced lower the body weight and brain weight in compared to control found that
1. Vitamin B6 deficiency rat showed a delay of stabilisation of reflex reactions
2. Reaction of these group of rat expressed in maturation of neuromotor coordination also significantly slow

Dr. Krishna AP, the led author said, "This suggests that the importance of maternal pyridoxine supplementation cannot be overlooked in pregnant women especially after prolonged use of anovulatory steroids".

Taking altogether, Oral administrated of vitamin B6 may have a profound effect in reduced risk of
childhood neuromotor abnormality if taken with recommended dose during pregnancy, particularly in women with prolonged use of anovulatory steroids'.

All About Vitamins" Vitamin B6 in Improved Cognitive Function?

By Kyle J. Norton.

Vitamin B6 may have a therapeutic effect in improved cognitive development of offsring, a Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health study suggested.

In the study the effect of vitamin B6 in pregnant and lactating women,  researchers found that recommended dietary allowance of vitamin B6 may have a strong effect in improved cognitive and brain development as the nutrient is an essential cofactor in the developing central nervous system of fetus.

Dr. Guilarte TR, at the study said, " Recent work in animal models suggests that vitamin B6 deficiency during gestation and lactation alters the function of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors, a subtype of receptors of the glutamatergic neurotransmitter system thought to play an important role in learning and memory".

Other, in the study of nutrient effect on cognitive impairment, patients with AD expressed a 50% deficits of various nutrients, including folic acid, vitamin B12, B6, C, E, A, D, K, beta carotene and omega 3 fatty acids.

Interestingly, In the investigation of whether baseline folate, vitamin B-6, and/or vitamin B-12 intake, alone or in combination, are associated with incident MCI/probable dementia among older women containing 7030 Postmenopausal women free of MCI/probable dementia at baseline in the Women's Health Initiative Memory Study, after carefully examine the returned questionnaire, researchers indicated that vitamin B6 showed no effect in improved symptoms of dementia in this group of women.

Taking together, vitamin B6 may have a profound effect in reduced risk of brain and cognitive abnormality in infant if taken according to recommended doses during pregnant. However, the vitamin does not reduce symptoms in patient with dementia.

All About Vitamins: Vitamin B6 for Treatment of Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

By Kyle J. Norton.

Vitamin B6  may have a profound effect in reduced symptoms of  Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, an Iran study suggested

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition, characterized by numbness, tingling, weakness, or muscle damage in the hand and fingers, as a result of the pressure on the median nerve.

In the study of Forty patients (67 hands) with mild-moderate CTS initially selected and randomly assigned into two groups as follows: 1) Case group with 20 subjects (32 affected hands) receiving vitamin B6 (120 mg/day for 3 months) and splinting. 2) Control group with 19 subjects (35 affected hands) only received splinting, researchers filed the following reports
1. Vitamin B6 treatment group expressed a strong improvement of nocturnal awakening frequency due to pain, daily pain, daily pain frequency, daily pain persistence, hand numbness, hand weakness, hand tingling, severity of nocturnal numbness and tingling, nocturnal awakening frequency owing to hand numbness and tingling, and clumsiness in handling objects. in compared to other groups
2. However, oral administrated vitamin B6 group displayed insignificant result in opening a jam bottle and handling phone in compared to control
3. Vitamin B6 groups also demonstrated an improvement of median nerve sensory latency mean decreased and the median nerve sensory amplitude mean and sensory conduction velocity mean increased.

Dr. Talebi M, the led author said, "vitamin B6 treatment improves clinical symptoms and sensory electrodiagnostic results in CTS patients" and "(it) is recommended for CTS treatment".

Other, in the study of a 42-year-old woman with carpal tunnel syndrome started taking vitamin B6 supplement to relieve her symptoms, researchers indicated that vitamin B6 is often used as a conservative and adjunct therapy for patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, but patients attempted to treat their symptoms with vitamin B6 on their own should be aware that Vitamin B6 at more than 200 mg daily may induce some unpredictable adverse effects.

Dr. Ryan-Harshman M, the led authorsaid, " Vitamin B6 at less than 200 mg daily is not likely to cause any adverse effects, but patients should be monitored for changes in symptoms, particularly when high doses are taken over long periods".

Contrastively, in the Electroencephalogram (EEG) studies to evaluate the role of vitamin B6 as a therapeutic agent in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome by monitoring both the standard clinical and electrophysiological parameters for entrapment neuropathy at the wrist, researchers disagreed that vitamin B6 may be sued for treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome, as patients in the tested showed no changes occurred during the treatment period. Motor latency, while the most common screening test for carpal tunnel syndrome, was not significantly changed during the course of treatment.

Taking altogether, Vitamin B6  may have a profound effect in reduced symptoms of  Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, but large sample size and cohost studies are necessary to prove this validity.

All About Vitamins: Vitamin B6 for Treatment of inborn errors Epilepsy

By Kyle J. Norton.

Vitamin B6  supplement may have a profound effect in reduced risk of childhood epilepsy, a renowned institute study suggested.

In concern of inborn errors of metabolism in affecting vitamin B6 concentrations in the brain in induced early-onset epilepsy, without showing hyperprolinemia type 2, antiquitin deficiency, and pyridoxine phosphate oxidase deficiency researchers at the Chang Gung University found that pyridoxal phosphate (PLP), the active form of vitamin B6 displayed a significant effect in treating patients without the above four disorders.

The study also indicated that patients with pyridoxine phosphate oxidase deficiency also responded to pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) instead of pyridoxine.

DR. Wang HS, the led author said, "patients without the above four disorders using vitamin B6, and have found that the treatment was more effective with PLP than with pyridoxine, though the mechanism is not known" and "Since PLP is as inexpensive as pyridoxine, we suggest replacing PLP for pyridoxine when treating children with epilepsy".

Others, in the support of the about differentiation also postulated that PLP therapy also found to be effective in treatment of all four disorders, but pyridoxine oral intake failed to improved seizures in PNPO deficiency.

However, PLP treatment in epilepsy expressed some adverse effect in severe apnea, therefore  resuscitation equipment should be at hand during a first pyridoxine/PLP administration.

Interestingly, in he study of four genetic epilepsies with vitamin B6 dependent seizures, particularly, to pyridoxine therapy resistant seizures in the neonatal period with PNPO patients researchers found these patients may need PLP substitution and therapy resistant seizures diagnosed early can prevent irreversible neurologic damage.

Taking altogether, there is no doubt that vitamin B6 in form of pyridoxine and PLP may have a therapeutic effect in treatment childhood epilepsy. But in case of therapy of resistant seizures, substitution of pyridoxine by PLP are always necessary.
