#Antioxidant Beta-Sitosterol, the Anti-Inflammatory Phytochemical, Researchers Say

Inflammation is a natural response by the immune system to protect the body against the invasion of stimuli or foreign pathogens.

Acute inflammation is a short-term condition caused by tissue injury, leading to pain, redness, swelling, and heat in the affected area, depending on the size of the injury. Some patients with acute inflammation may also experience the symptom of loss of function.

In acute inflammation, the white blood cells on the first line of defense of the immune system after sensing the danger of an infection in the body through a message from the brain stimulate the production of platelets to cover the site of injury or damage and inflammatory cytokines to kill off all pathogens before they can cause harm to the body.

Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

Chronic inflammation is a low-grade inflammation caused by the inability of the immune system to eliminate the invasive pathogens that occurred in the acute phase of infection.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 8 weeks is considered chronic inflammation.

Believe it or not, worldwide, 3 of 5 death are results from chronic inflammatory diseases like stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, heart disorders, cancer, obesity, and diabetes.

Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune property to curb foreign pathogens.

Conventionally, the most common use of anti-inflammatory medicines is over counter aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin), and other prescription NSAIDs.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, and buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention of diseases involved in oxidative stress, researchers investigated the anti-inflammatory activity of β-sitosterol (BSS) isolated from Moringa oleifera in two cell lines.

According to the experimental analysis, over a dose range of 7.5 to 30 μM, BSS in the medium as nanoparticles with diameters of 50 ± 5 nm suppressed the secretion of inflammatory factors from keratinocytes and macrophages induced by ROS and proteins associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8,

The application of BSS significantly reduced the expression of NLRP3, a key component of NLRP3 inflammasomes that participates in the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and IL-18, and inhibited the activation of caspase-1, the precursors of the inflammatory cytokines interleukin 1β and interleukin 18.

NF-κB, the protein associated with the signaling of inflammation in macrophages was also partially inhibited by BSS.

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of inflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Antioxidant Beta-Sitosterol Exhibits a Protective Effect on Alzheimer's, Scientists Suggest

Neurological diseases are the medical conditions of brain disorders. Anything that involves structural, biochemical, or electrical abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord, or other nerves, including brain damage is considered neuro disease.

The most common neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly are dementia. Depending on the brain regions that are damaged or dysfunctional, dementia can be Parkinson's, Alzheimer's,... or Huntington's disease.

Genetic mutation inherited from parents such as the NOTCH3 gene is the most common autosomal dominant cause of stroke and vascular dementia.

Neurodegenerative diseases are a class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons in the brain caused by several mechanisms, including toxicity and oxygen deficiency.

Dementia is a cluster of conditions including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s disease, leading to a negative influence on the body's functioning, including balance, movement, talking, breathing, and heart function.

There is no single cause of the progressive death of brain neurons. Epidemiologically, genetic preposition and medical conditions, such as alcoholism, brain cancer or a stroke in the brain are some of the most common prevalent factors found in patients with neurological diseases.

The most common form of neurodegenerative disease in North America is Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas through the destruction of brain cells, causing cognitive modalities severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies, or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal.

According to statistics, over 25 million people in the world today are affected by dementia and most are suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, and buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, researchers elucidated the effects of sterol β-Sitosterol on the production of platelet Aβ in Alzheimer's disease (AD).

According to the results in learning and memory in amyloid protein precursor/presenilin 1 (APP/PS1) double transgenic mice which were treated with β-Sitosterol for four weeks, * β-Sitosterol treatment improved spatial learning and recognition memory ability, and reduced plaque load in APP/PS1 mice.

* β-Sitosterol treatment reversed dendritic spine loss in APP/PS1 mice and reversed the decreased hippocampal neuron miniature excitatory postsynaptic current frequency.

In other words, β-Sitosterol demonstrated a neuroprotective effect that may offer a novel pharmaceutical agent for the treatment of AD.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " these findings suggest that β-Sitosterol ameliorates memory and learning impairment in APP/PS1 mice and possibly decreases Aβ deposition".

Beta-Sitosterol may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of AD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Antioxidant Beta-Sitosterol Reduces the Risk and Onset of Tuberculosis

The lung is a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' needs and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Chronic respiratory diseases are medical conditions related to abnormal function of the airways and other parts of the lung.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Commonly, the bacterium attacked the lung tissue but in some cases, it also can cause major damage to other parts of the body.

The disease is very contagious, as types of bacteria that cause TB can spread from person to person through microscopic droplets released into the air.

In other words, people can be infected by TB if they can to close contact with TB patients through tuberculosis coughs, speaks, sneezes, spits,.... and laughs.

The disease is rare in the Western world, however, according to the report of WHO of the region including 36 countries in the Western Pacific Region, approximately 1.4 million notified cases of all forms of TB in 2011 (75 per 100 000 population), corresponding to 23% of the total cases notified globally.

There were 0.6 million new smear-positive cases notified in 2011 (32 per 100 000 population), corresponding to 22% of the total smear-positive cases notified globally.

The most common TB complications has been recorded are spinal pain, back pain, and stiffness, joint damage.

Furthermore, depending on the diseases associated with the complication induced by tuberculous, patients may also experience hip and knee malformation, swelling of the membranes that cover the brain, liver or kidney problems, and heart disorders.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, and buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, researchers examined the adjuvant effect of beta-sitosterol and its glucoside in the treatment of culture-proven pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB).

The blinded randomized placebo-controlled trial was conducted by using the culture-proven drug-sensitive PTBs from patients hospitalized for the duration of treatment.

According to the chemical analysis,
* Weight gain was significantly greater in the sitosterol group (mean weight gain 8.9 kg) compared to the placebo.

* However, the speed of achieving culture negativity, radiological improvement, and induration on Mantoux testing was similar in the two groups.

* Most importantly, the sitosterol treatment group demonstrated a significant increase in lymphocyte counts and eosinophil counts from baseline compared to the placebo.

Collectively, scientists suggested, "The study has shown significantly improved weight gain and higher lymphocyte and eosinophil counts in PTB patients receiving sitosterols in addition to an efficacious antituberculosis regimen".

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Ursolic Acid Suppresses the Diseases Associated with Chronic Lung Inflammation in Vivo

The lung is a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air and then transporting them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' needs and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Lung inflammation is a class of diseases associated with the inflammation of the lung tissues.

According to the statistics provided by the Lung Association over 3 million Canadians are affected by one of five serious respiratory diseases – asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, tuberculosis (TB), and cystic fibrosis.

In 2017, 28,600 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer, representing 14% of all new cancer cases. Lung cancer caused the death of 21,100 Canadians in the same year.

The exact causes of lung disease are not identified. However, epidemiological studies suggested
being overweight, smoking, family history, and smoking are some of the most prevalent factors associated with the onset of the disease.

Inflammation is a natural defense of the immune system that protects the body against the insult from foreign invasion.

Acute inflammation occurs quickly or within hours and lasts a few days or weeks and the damaged tissues are healed themselves after all pathogens are killed off.

Ursolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belongings to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in apples, basil, bilberries, cranberries, peppermint, lavender, oregano, hawthorn, prunes., etc.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of lung diseases, researchers examined the effect of synthesized ursolic acid derivatives on mice models of PM2.5-induced COPD in vivo.

According to the analysis of mice-induced COPD by the administration of 25 μL of PM2.5 suspension through the intranasal route daily for 1 week,
* COPD mice showed elevated levels of oxidative stress markers and inflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factors-α and interleukin-6 in the mice bronchoalveolar fluids.

* The administration of ursolic acid derivative caused significant suppression of aforementioned parameters including oxidative stress markers and inflammatory cytokines in COPD mice in a dose-dependent manner.

* Furthermore, the inflammatory cell infiltration in COPD mice was inhibited by the treatment of ursolic acid derivative.

* More importantly, The ursolic acid derivative treatment also increased the level of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and inhibited lung injury in mice with COPD.

After taking other factors into account, researchers said, " ursolic acid derivative inhibits pulmonary tissue damage in mice through suppression of inflammatory cytokine and oxidative enzymes. Therefore, ursolic acid derivative can be of therapeutic importance for the treatment of PM2.5-induced COPD".

Taken altogether, Ursolic acid may be considered adjunct therapy in the treatment of lung diseases associated with chronic inflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Vitamin B2 Effects on Liver Cancer

Intake of vitamin B2 supplements regularly may reduce the risk of Vitamin B2 deficiency in the induction of early onset of liver cancer.

Vitamin B2 also known as Riboflavin, is a water-soluble, yellow-orange organic compound found abundantly in milk, meat, eggs, nuts, and enriched fever cells, increased proliferation is caused by oxidative damage to proteins and DNA, and prevents cell cycle arrest.

In fact, vitamin B2 deficiency is also associated with greater than 183% in riboflavin-deficient cells of that induced abundance of pro-apoptotic pleiomorphic adenoma gene-like 1 gene in inducing liver cancer in compared with riboflavin-sufficient controls.

Taking together, riboflavin deficiency is associated with oxidative damage to proteins and DNA in liver cells, causing liver disease through many aspects of protein functioning.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids, the Potential Lipid Inflammatory Mediators in Vitro and Vivo

Inflammation is a natural response by the immune system to protect the body against the invasion of stimuli or foreign pathogens.

Acute inflammation is a short-term condition caused by tissue injury, leading to pain, redness, swelling, and heat in the affected area. depending on the size of the injury.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, acute inflammatory progression cannot be stopped due to the inability of the immune system to destroy all invaders, which may lead to low-grade chronic inflammation.

Lipids mediators, derived from the omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are potent enhancers of innate and adaptive immune activation in numerous inflammatory disorders.

Dr. Bennett M, the lead scientist in the examing "Lipid Mediators in Inflammation" wrote, "Lipids are potent signaling molecules that regulate a multitude of cellular responses, including cell growth and death and inflammation/infection, via receptor-mediated pathways. Derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as arachidonic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), each lipid displays unique properties, thus making their role in inflammation distinct from that of other lipids derived from the same PUFA".

In other words, each individual acid arachidonic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), each lipid displays unique properties which are derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), plays a selective role in maintaining cellular process depending on the types of fatty acid.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the effects of n3-PUFA DHA and its derived specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs) MaR1, RvD1, and RvD2, on TNF-α inhibition of intestinal sugar and glutamine uptake.

Based on the differentiation,* DHA blocked TNF-α-induced inhibition of α-methyl-D-glucose (αMG) uptake, an analog of glucose, and SGLT1, a glucose transporter, expression in the apical membrane of Caco-2 cells.

* Compared to DHA, SPMs showed the same preventive effect at concentrations 1000 times lower.

* In diet-induced obese (DIO) mice, oral gavage of SPMs, MaR1 reversed the up-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines found in the intestinal mucosa of these mice without inducing a reduced intestinal transport of αMG and SGLT1 expression in the DIO mice.

* In Caco-2 cells, EPA, DHA, and the DHA-derived SPMs. also prevent the TNF-α in the inhibition of glutamine uptake.

Collectively, scientists said, " DHA and its SPMs as promising biomolecules to restore intestinal nutrients transport during intestinal inflammation".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the treatment of diseases associated with impaired lipid inflammatory mediators, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Serum of Tocopherols Is Associated with A Reduced Risk of Oral Cancer

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells grow and multiply disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Mouth/oral cancer is a medical condition associated with the irregular cell growth on the tissue of the mouth caused by genetic alteration of the cell DNA.

Most cases of mouth cancer start in the flat, thin cells (squamous cells) of the inner lining tissue that line the lips and the inside of the mouth.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018, approximately, over 50,000 people will get oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer. An estimated over 10,000 people will die of these cancers.in the United States.

The exact causes of mouth cancer are unknown. However, the increase in age, gender, exposure to radioactive, long-term use of tobacco use and excessive alcohol drinking, viral infection, and genetic mutation is the most common prevalent risk factors found in people with mouth cancer.

Risk factors associated with the onset of mouth cancer are
* Smoking
In the studies, Cancer Prevention Study (CPS) I and II, sponsored by the American Cancer Society (ACS), researchers found that the mortality risk for oral cancer in cigarette smokers is substantially greater than that observed among lifelong never smokers.

* Alcohol drinking
Alcohol drinking is known to promote oral cancer. Oral cancer risk increases if a person is both a heavy smoker and a drinker.

* Chewing tobacco
Maybe as a result of irritation of the mucous membranes of the mouth from chemicals in the tobacco.

* Chewing betel nut
It May be caused by a chemical compound that irritates the mucous membranes of the mouth
* Age
Most cases of oral cancer are diagnosed at ages over the fifties.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers investigated associations between retinol, α-tocopherol, and β-carotene with the risk of oral cancer.

The comparative cross-sectional study included a total of 240 involving oral cancer patients and healthy individuals in matched cases and controls where subjects were selected from the Malaysian Oral Cancer Database and Tissue Bank System (MOCDTBS).

According to the analysis,
* Serum levels of retinol and α-tocopherol among cases (0.177±0.081, 1.649±1.670μg/ml) were significantly lower than in controls (0.264±0.137, 3.225±2.054μg/ml) (p<0.005) compared to treatment group.

* Serum levels of β-carotene among cases (0.106±0.159 μg/ml) were lower compared to controls (0.134±0.131μg/ml)

These results suggested that high serum levels of retinol (OR=0.501, 95% CI=0.254-0.992, p<0.05) and α-tocopherol (OR=0.184, 95% CI=0.091-0.370, p<0.05) was significantly related to lower risk of oral cancer.

After taking other factors into account, researchers said, "High serum levels of retinol and α-tocopherol confer protection against oral cancer risk".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered an adjunct therapy in the treatment of oral cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids Suppress Cancer Cachexia in Patients with Pancreatic Cancer

The pancreas is an oblong flattened gland in the digestive and endocrine system located in the abdomen. By secreting pancreatic juice to the small intestine, the pancreas helps to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.

Traditional Chinese medicine views the pancreas, as a vital organ responsible for the absorption of foods' qi and nutrients before passing them to other organs to nourish our body.

More precisely, the functions of the pancreas including
* Production of enzymes digest fat, protein, and
carbohydrates.

* production of juices combined with juices from the intestines helps to do the job of breaking down protein, carbohydrates, and fat, therefore, it plays an important role in maintaining good health.

* Production of insulin, which is important in regulating the amount of sugar or glucose in the blood.

Pancreatic cancer is a chronic condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the tissues of the pancreas.

According to statistics, every year, approximately, over 55,000 adults in the United States are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, accounting for 3% of all cancers and 7% of all cancer deaths.

The survival rate of pancreatic cancer even diagnosed early is very low compared to other types of cancer. The 5-year survival rate at stage IA pancreatic cancer is only14%.

Researchers do not know what causes pancreatic cancer. They don't even know why people with the same health conditions in the same family, are susceptible to pancreatic cancer, while others do not.

The most common risk factors of pancreatic cancer are similar to those of common cancers, including age, family history, gender, ethnicity, smoking, being overweight or obese, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes.

Cancer cachexia is a condition a multifactorial syndrome associated with an ongoing loss of skeletal muscle mass.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of omega-3 fatty acids in patients with pancreatic and bile duct cancer.

According to the administration of Racol®, an enteral nutrient formulated with omega-3 fatty acids to patients with unresectable pancreatic and bile duct cancer at 4 and 8 weeks after, pre-administration and administration showed a strong activity that increases skeletal muscle mass at both 4 and 8 weeks.

In other words, Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation protects the skeletal muscle mass associated with cancer cachexia in patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer and may improve cancer.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the reduction of cancer cachexia in patients with pancreatic cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemicals Omega-3 Fatty Acids, the Healthy Fat for the Treatment of Myocardial Infarction

Stroke is the third leading cause of death. Approximately 1/4 of all stroke victims die as a direct result of the stroke or its complications.

Stroke is caused by the accumulation of cholesterol and other substances that build up the arterial walls.

In other words, if cholesterol building up in the arteries is blocking the circulation of blood in any part of the body causing oxygen not to be delivered to the brain, leading to the death of some cells in the brain.

According to the statistics, every year, more than 790,000 people suffer a stroke, 600,000 of these are first attacks, and 185,000 are recurrent attacks. Most cases of stroke occur in people over the age of 65.

Myocardial infarction (MI) is a medical condition known as a heart attack caused by the blood flow decreasing or stopping in a part of the heart, leading to damage to the heart muscle.

In other words, myocardial infarction (MI) occurs due to the imbalance in oxygen supply and demand caused by plaque rupture with thrombus formation in an artery, leading to reduced blood flow to the heart.

Prompt treatment can minimize brain damage and potential post-disease complications.

The most common symptoms of MI are pressure, tightness, pain, or a squeezing or aching sensation in your chest, digestive discomforts such as nausea, indigestion, heartburn, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, and dizziness.

Conventionally, the treatment of myocardial infarction is focused to reduce the damage to the heart muscle accomplished through medical or mechanical means.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of post-stroke, researchers examined the omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) EPA the infarct-limiting effect on experimental models.

The observational study was conducted in 100 patients with a reperfused anterior ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), at hospital admission who are quantified by gas-chromatography the red blood cell proportions of AA, EPA, and the AA: EPA ratio, a valid surrogate for cardiomyocyte membrane content.

According to the results of the tested analysis,* AA:EPA ratio directly related to acute infarct size (coefficient [95% CI]: 6.19 [1.68 to 10.69], P = 0.008) and inversely to long-term cardiac function (left ventricular ejection fraction [LVEF]) (coefficient [95% CI]: − 4.02 [− 7.15 to − 0.89], P = 0.012), comapred to uintreated control.

* EPA inversely related to acute infarct size (coefficient [95% CI]: − 6.58; [− 11.46 to − 1.70]; P = 0.009), while a direct association with LVEF at follow-up (coefficient [95% CI]: 3.67 [0.25 to 7.08]; P = 0.036) was observed.

In other words, both applications of omega 3 fatty acids demonstrated protective activity to preserve the neuron against damage immediately after the incidence of stroke.
Additionally, researchers also found, " A low AA: EPA ratio in red blood cells at the time of STEMI is associated with smaller acute infarct size and preserved long-term ventricular function".

Collectively, they said, "Our results are consistent with prior work in experimental models and add to the notion of omega-3 fatty acids as a healthy fat".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the treatment of myocardial infarction, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Beta-Sitosterol Protects the Pancreatic Islets functioning Against the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

More precisely, the functions of the pancreas including the
* Production of enzymes digest fat, protein, and
carbohydrates.

* Production of juices combined with juices from the intestines to break down protein, carbohydrates, and fat, therefore, it plays an important role in maintaining good health.

* Production of insulin, which is important in regulating the amount of sugar or glucose in the blood.

Pancreatic islets are groups of hormones producing cells, including insulin and glucagon, that work together to maintain the proper level of sugar (glucose) in the blood.

Profound distortion of islet organization in the pancreas has been found to induce account abnormal secretory behavior of the glucagon-secreting A cells in insulin-dependent juvenile-onset diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is the most common form of diabetes found in children and is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.

As of today, there is no cure for type 1 diabetes. Treatment is focusing on managing blood sugar levels with insulin injection, diet, and lifestyle change.

According to statistics, diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the US. Approximately 10% or 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, accompanied by 8.1 million that are undiagnosed and unaware of their condition.

About 1.4 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in the United States every year. More than one in every 10 adults who are 20 years or older has diabetes.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, and buckwheat. etc.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, researchers elucidated the anti-diabetic effects of the extract of A. tenuifolia underground parts and β-sitosterol on rat pancreatic islets.

According to the results of the analysis,* The root extract of the plant and compound β-sitosterol isolated from the root extracts showed moderate α-amylase inhibitory activity.

* Furthermore, the herb root extract was able to increase the secretion of insulin in high concentrations (10 mg/mL) and improved the cell viability with no toxicity in all doses.

* The herbal extract could reduce the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) associated with the onset of oxidative stress in orchestrating damage to the pancreatic islets.

* Moreover, the plant extract also significantly decreased the enzyme activity associated with pro-apoptotic expression by increasing the antioxidant capacity of the isolated cells.

In other words, all compounds found in the extract work synergistically to protect the pancreatic islets by inhibiting all parameters involved in pancreatic damage, particularly, the compound β-sitosterol

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol combined with other phytochemicals found in A. tenuifolia underground parts may be considered a supplement for the protection of pancreatic islets-induced diabetes, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Oleanolic Acid Cures Diarrhea in Vivo

Diarrhea is a condition of frequent bowel movements with three loose or liquid each day. A prolonged period of diarrhea may result in dehydration due to fluid loss.

Acute diarrhea, healing on its own is a common problem caused by viruses that may last a few days. The most common causes of acute diarrhea are rotavirus in children and norovirus in adults.

Persistent diarrhea that lasts more than 4 weeks is considered chronic diarrhea.

Chronic diarrhea is a medical condition caused by impaired digestion of fats due to low production of the pancreatic enzymes and impaired absorption of fats due to small intestinal diseases, including lactose, sorbitol, and fructose intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Certain medications such as antibiotics, dietary changes, infected with bacteria or viruses are some of the most common factors associated with an increased risk of diarrhea.

Infections by bacteria such as Salmonella or Escherichia coli are the most common causes of acute diarrhea. Patients with acute diarrhea usually are recovered within a week or 2 with or without medication.

However, patients with some bowel diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease also frequently experience chronic conditions, which can not be cured unless the diseases are treated.

In some cases, chronic frequent and severe diarrhea can be a sign of intestinal disease or a functional bowel disorder.

The most common symptoms of diarrhea include loose, watery stools. abdominal pain and gastrointestinal discomforts. In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of fever and blood in the stool.

Some researchers suggested that symptoms of diarrhea accompanied by blood in the stool are also a sign of colon cancer.

Oleanolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belonging to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in honey mesquite, garlic, java apple, clove, etc.

On finding a potential plant that improves the digestive functioning, researchers examined the effect of oleanolic acid (OA) on Salmonella typhimurium (S.T), a common cause of acute, self-limiting food-borne diarrhea with severe intestinal inflammation and intestinal barrier damage.

The study included a total of eighty BALB/c mice (4-week-old) that were randomly divided into the control group (no S.T, no OA), the S.T group (S.T only), the S.T + OA group (S.T plus 100 mg kg-1 OA) and the OA group (100 mg kg-1 OA only).

According to the results of the analysis,
* Compared with the S.T group, OA administration significantly reduced clinical symptoms and weight loss, and the severity of diarrhea and intestinal structural damage was significantly alleviated observed by a decrease in the diarrhea index (DI) and jejunal histological damage.

* In the infected jejunum, OA maintained the expression and localization of occludin, claudin-1, and ZO-1 to protect the jejunal barrier.

* OA treatment not only reduced the levels of COX-2 and iNOS but also inhibited the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α.

* A treatment significantly inhibited IκB phosphorylation and degradation against the intestinal tissues.

* OA also decreased the level of TLR4 associated with inflammatory cytokines and the activation of the MAPK pathway in the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines.

Collectively, researchers said, "OA can maintain the intestinal tight junction barrier and prevent diarrhea caused by S.T.".

Taken altogether, oleanolic acid may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver diarrhea, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Improve Oral Mucositis and Body Weight Loss in Chemoradiotherapy Patients with Head and Neck Cancer

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells grow and multiply disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers found in the mouth, throat, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands.

Most cases of head and neck cancer, at the early stage, start with the cell growth irregularly and disorderly on the surface of the inner lining of the head and neck.

At the advanced stage, patients may experience symptoms of a lump in the nose, neck, or throat, with or without pain, a persistent sore throat that does not heal, trouble swallowing (dysphagia), and frequent and persistent coughing.

At this stage, cancer cells may travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

The most common head and neck cancer metastases are secondary skin cancer.

The exact causes of head and neck cancer are unknown. Researchers cannot explain why people with similar health conditions and the same risk factors, are susceptible to the onset of the disease, while others do not.

Some researchers suggested that people who perform oral sex before sexual intercourse is at a higher incidence of disease development as human papillomavirus (HPV) can spread during oral sex, increasing the possibility of oral cancer.

mitted virus.

According to the statistics, head and neck cancer account only for about 4% of all cancers in the US. In 2019, an estimated 65,410 people (48,000 men and 17,410 women) were funded to develop head and neck cancer.

Most people diagnosed with head and neck cancer are older than 50.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cancer, researchers investigated the effect of a nutritional supplement with a high blend ratio of w-3 fatty acids(Prosure®) on body weight loss, and oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer.

The study included 17 patients with oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer who were treated with concomitant cisplatin and 70 Gy of radiotherapy with or without 2 packs of Prosure®per day during chemoradiotherapy.

According to the final results,* The reduction in body weight was significantly improved compared with that in the historical control group that did not receive Prosure®(7.3% vs 10.3%, p<0.01),

* The rate of Grade 3-4 oral mucositis was significantly reduced for the patient groups that received Prosure®(CTCAE v3.0 GradeB3; 24% vs 58%, p<0.05).

Most importantly, the completion rate of chemoradiotherapy was not significantly different between both groups(77% vs 60%, NS).

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "A nutritional supplement with a high blend ratio of w-3 fatty acids(Prosure®)had effects on oral mucositis and body weight loss in head and neck cancer patients treated with chemoradiotherapy".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention of breast cancer by reducing the breast density, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Lycopene in the Promotion of Lung Function Against Obstructive Lung Functioning

The lungs formed part of the respiratory system are a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest with the main function to process of gas exchange during breathing.

In other words, the lungs transfer life-giving oxygen into the blood supply and remove carbon dioxide produced by cells' metabolism from the blood.

Additionally, the lung is also the first-line defense against inhaled particles and prevent the circulation of emboli such as blood clot (thrombus), a fat globule (fat embolism), a bubble of air or other gas (gas embolism), or foreign material.

Additionally, the lung also processes other abilities of
* Balancing the pH levels, the lung protects the body against the accumulation of too much carbon dioxide. High levels of carbon dioxide are known to induce acidity in the body.

* Removing small blood clots in the lung protects the body against the forming air embolisms.

* Protecting lung infection through the secretion of immunoglobulin A.

Any part of the lung injury can reduce the lung function, leading to either obstructive or restrictive lung diseases or mixed lung disease, depending on a person's breathing.

Obstructive lung diseases are condition in which the lungs are unable to expel air properly during exhalation. Diseases associated with obstruction lung diseases such as asthma, bronchiectasis, COPD, and emphysema.

Besides smoking, second-hand smoke is the most common cause of obstructive lung disease. Dr.Mark D. Eisner said, "Secondhand smoke (SHS) has been extensively studied as a risk factor for obstructive lung disease, including decreased lung function, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (1–5)".

And, "Epidemiologic studies have played a key role in evaluating the respiratory health effects of SHS because they are the only feasible method for studying the impact of exposure, as it occurs naturally, on large numbers of the subject".

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of lung disease researchers examined the prospective associations between concentrations of α- and β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lutein/zeaxanthin, lycopene, Se, vitamin C, and α-tocopherol and all-cause mortality among US adults with obstructive lung function.

The study included a total of 1492 adults aged 20-79 years with obstructive lung function in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III (1988-94) that cause 629 deaths during a median follow-up period of 14 years.

α-carotene (P= 0·037); β-carotene (P= 0·022); cryptoxanthin (P= 0·022); lutein/zeaxanthin (P= 0·004); total carotenoids (P= 0·001) vitamin C (P< 0·001) concentration were invesely associated with all-cause mortality among adults with obstructive lung function.

However, in maximally adjusted models, only the concentrations of lycopene (P= 0·013) and vitamin C (P= 0·046) were found to be significantly and inversely associated with all-cause mortality compared to other tested antioxidants.

Additionally, lutein/zeaxanthin concentrations and all-cause mortality varied by smoking status were associated with lutein/zeaxanthin concentrations.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The concentrations of lycopene and vitamin C were inversely associated with all-cause mortality in this cohort of adults with obstructive lung function".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered a remedy for the improvement of obstructive lung function, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Antioxidant Beta-Sitosterol Inhibits the Parameters Associated with the Risk of Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas die off or receptor sites are clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

There are 2 major types of diabetes,

* Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is the most common form of diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.

* Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are an increased thirst that won't stop with water intake, and increased hunger.

Diabetic complications are any diseases associated with hyperglycemia if the blood glucose is not managed properly. Patients with diabetes may induce a number of complications including cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy, and foot ulcer.

By managing your blood glucose properly and daily, the risk of diabetic complications can be reduced in diabetics by
*Taking your medication as directed.

*Keeping tight control of your blood sugar or managing the blood glucose in the required range

* Eating healthy with moderate exercise to protect your weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol. Being overweight, blood pressure and cholesterol are some of the conditions associated with an increased risk of diabetes complications.

* Get regular checkups

* Quit smoking

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, and buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention of chronic diseases involved in oxidative stress, researchers investigated the anti-diabetes activity of beta-sitosterol (β-sitosterol) on insulin signaling molecules and glucose oxidation.

According to the differentiation of the adipose tissue of a high-fat diet and sucrose-induced type-2 diabetic experimental rats given the dose of β-sitosterol (20 mg/kg b.wt, orally for 30 days), β-sitosterol normalized the altered levels of blood glucose, serum insulin in the tested rats.

Furthermore, the hormone testosterone, lipid profile, oxidative stress markers, antioxidant enzymes, insulin receptor (IR), and glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) proteins associated with glucose uptake were also inhibited by the application of beta-sitosterol.

In other words, most parameters associated with the characteristics of diabetes were inhibited by the injection of the bioactive compound.

Based on the findings, researchers aid, "β-sitosterol improves glycemic control through activation of IR and GLUT4 in the adipose tissue of high fat and sucrose-induced type-2 diabetic rats".

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the treatment of diabetes, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Process Anti Non Melanoma Cancer Activity in Vitro

Skin, a large organ that forms the out layers of our body has serval layers of ectodermal tissue that protect the underlying muscles, bones, ligaments, and internal organs against foreign pathogenic invasion.
Skin cancer is a medical condition characterized by disordered and irregular cell growth in the skin.

Most cases of primary skin cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner ling of the skin. At the advanced stage, the cancerous cells can travel a distance away from the skin to infect other healthy tissue and organ through blood and fluid circulation.

Melanoma is a kind of skin cancer but less common than other skin cancer as a result of the malignancy of melanocytes, which is the cell-produced dark pigment for your skin.

Approximately 120,000 new cases of melanoma in the US are diagnosed in a year. melanoma tends to spread along the skin in most cases, but also can grow down to the deeper layers of the skin. At the later stage, it can spread to distant parts of the body, including organs.

Most cases of melanoma start in the melanocytes or pigment-producing cells in the outer layer of the skin. However, at the later stage, the cancer cells can travel through the circulation of blood and fluids to infect other healthy cells and tissue, leading to secondary metastasis.

The liver, lungs, bones, and brain are most often affected by melanoma metastases.

According to statistics, the risk of melanoma is largely dependent on the race. The lifetime risk of getting melanoma is about 2.5% (1 in 40) for whites, 0.1% (1 in 1,000) for blacks, and 0.5% (1 in 200) for Hispanics.

The 5 years survival rate of melanoma is closed to 100% if the disease is diagnosed in the localized stages.

In the US, every year, approximately 96,480 new melanomas are diagnosed, leading to the death of 7,000 people.

In North America, most cases of melanoma are associated with UVB exposure, causing the alteration of the cell DNA.

Nonmelanoma skin cancer is a type of skin cancer involved in basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the role of omega-3 FA in the prevention of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC).

According to the results of the analysis* Dietary omega-3 FA dramatically reduces the plasma and cutaneous pro-inflammatory and immunosuppressive PGE(2) levels in vivo, compared to dietary omega-6 FA in the increase of prostaglandin E synthase type 2 (PGE(2)) level.

* Dietary omega-3 FA significantly reduces the inflammatory response and sustains, or enhances, the delayed-type hypersensitivity immune response in mice when compared to an equivalent dietary level of omega-6 FA.

* Supplementary omega-3 FA significantly increases the UVR-mediated erythema threshold in humans.

Furthermore, supplementary omega-3 FA significantly reduces the level of pro-inflammatory and immunosuppressive PGE(2) levels in Ultraviolet B-irradiated human skin.

In other words, omega-3 FA showed a strong implication on the immune response in the induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines induced the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC).

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention of skin cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Lycopene Inhibits the Parameters Associated with Mitochondrial Dysfunction

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a condition that affects the organelles in the generated energy for the cell.

More precisely, mitochondria perform cellular respiration, by taking nutrients from the cell, breaking it down, and turning it into energy.

Mitochondria are the cells that convert food molecules into energy in the body. Mitochondria produce 90 percent of the energy for the body's function.

Furthermore, mitochondrial also play a critical role to induce the older or damaged cells to release cytochrome C, which activates enzymes involved in cell apoptosis.

Moreover, mitochondria also play an essential role in calcium absorption and calcium release that regulates cellular metabolism, steroid synthesis, and hormone signalings.

The genetic proposition that causes mitochondrial dysfunction has been found to alter the process of mitochondria in converting oxygen and food to energy in some people.

Acquired mitochondrial dysfunction has been found in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, muscular dystrophy, Lou Gehrig’s disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Most common symptoms of mitochondrial dysfunction include poor growth, muscle weakness, muscle pain, low muscle tone, exercise intolerance, vision and/or hearing problems
learning disabilities, delays in development, and mental retardation depending on the location of the infected cells.

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the protection of mitochondrial function, researchers examined the effect of lycopene on preventing mitochondrial dysfunction during the d Galactosamine/lipopolysaccharide (d-GalN/LPS)-induced fulminant hepatic failure (FHF).

Based on the tested analysis, administration of d-GalN/LPS (300 mg and 30 μg/kg body weight, respectively) to the experimental rats showed a significant effect on several disturbances in mitochondrial function.

In other words, d-GalN/LPS administration not only increased the levels of lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxidation but also decreased the levels of mitochondrial antioxidants, tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle that release stored energy through the oxidation, and electron transport chain enzymes associated with cellular detoxification and the cellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) that provides energy to drive many processes in living cells,.

However, lycopene (10 mg/kg body weight for 6 days) pretreatment showed strong activity in attenuating the lipid peroxidation and prohibiting the excessive synthesis of hydrogen peroxide.

Furthermore, lycopene also inhibited the GalN/LPS-induced impairment in ATP production. Parameters associated with reduced mitochondrial function were effectively prevented by the lycopene administration.

More precisely, the mitochondrial protection of lycopene was mainly attributed to the strong antioxidant potential of its phytonutrient by preventing lipid peroxidation in the mitochondrial membrane.

Based on the results researchers said, "The carotenoid lycopene combatted oxidative stress, scavenged free radicals, prevented ROS generation, and inhibited the toxic effects of d-GalN/LPS during FHF".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of mitochondrial dysfunction, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Improve the Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disorder as a result of inflammation, affecting mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body.

The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the age of 40, causing the diminished quality of life of many elders.

Rheumatoid Arthritis can induce bone loss through elevating bone resorption without increasing bone formation.

A cross-sectional population-based study of 1042 patients with rheumatoid arthritis showed that RA patients had an increased risk of death from various causes.

There is no single cause of RA. Changes in the female hormonal environment such as in pregnancy, breastfeeding and the use of the oral contraceptive (OC) pill appear to have a role. Cigarette smoking has been associated with a consistently increased risk that might also apply to the passive inhalation of smoke. Occupation probably has a minor influence, although exposure to silica dust is of aetiological importance. Recent studies have highlighted the role of diet, with suggestions that diets high in caffeine, low in antioxidants, and high in red meat may contribute to an increased risk.

The most plausible environmental exposure is an infection and although several decades of study have produced few definitive candidate organisms, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) remains an interesting target(22).

According to the CDC, Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect over 52 million adults in the US alone, including 294,000 children under age 18 with some form of arthritis or rheumatic conditions.

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) often associate with valgus deformities of the feet and deformities of gait due to body function due to an effort to support the collapsing longitudinal arch of the foot.

The kinematic and kinetic gait changes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are the result of a significant reduction in joint motions, and joint moments, such as decreased hip flexion-extension range, hip abduction, knee flexion-extension range,...

Long-term bone damage and the prolonged onset of the disease can induce deformities of the hand and wrist and small peripheral joints (such as fingers and wrist) due to chronic inflammation.

The effects of muscle strength in patients with RA may contribute to the prevalence of functional limitations physically that can affect daily living and quality of life.

Furthermore, rheumatoid nodules, lumps on the skin, and close to the joint have been found to affect the joints of patients with RA.

Moreover, morning stiffness, a marker of inflammatory activity that reflects functional disability and pain is a very common symptom of patients in the early stage of rheumatoid arthritis.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, researchers evaluated the effects of omega -3 fatty acids on rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

The meta-analysis includes reviewing the published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) associated with potential changes in RA disease activity, inflammation, and CVD risk.

According to the results of 20 RCTs, involving 717 patients with RA in the intervention group and 535 RA patients in the control group,* Consumption of ω-3 fatty acids was found to significantly improve eight disease-activity-related markers.

* Regarding inflammation, only leukotriene B4 was reduced compared to other pro-inflammatory markers.

* Omega 3 fatty acids were found to reduce blood triacylglycerol levels.

Collectively, researchers said, "The beneficial properties of ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on RA disease activity confirm the results of previous meta-analyses. Among the five proinflammatory markers evaluated, only leukotriene B4 was found to be reduced. However, a positive effect on the blood lipid profile of patients with RA was evident".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.
