Antioxidant #Omega-3 Fatty Acids Has NO Effects on Chronic Kidney Diseases, Scientists Find

Kidneys formed part of the secretory system, are bean-shaped organs located below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine with a function to filter out blood and remove waste through urinary secretion.

The kidney also plays a critical in maintaining the levels of fluids in the body, by removing extra fluids to make urine.

Furthermore, the kidney also regulates electrolytes, blood pressure, maintains acid-base balance, produces hormone calcitriol, renin, and erythropoietin.

Kidney diseases are a class of medical conditions associated with reduced function of the kidney, in cases, complete loss of kidney function such as kidney failure.

Chronic kidney disease, also known as chronic kidney failure, is a condition of a gradual loss of kidney function.

According to the observation of patients' data associated with the diseases, diabetes and high blood pressure are responsible for up to two-thirds of the cases.

According to the statistic, approximately, 30 million American adults have chronic kidney disease, and a large percentage of these people aren't aware of it. 1 in 3 American adults is at risk for kidney disease.

In other words, approximately 14 percent of the US population suffers some form of chronic kidney disease (CKD), including 661,000 cases of kidney failure.

Believe it or not, almost half of the individuals with CKD also have diabetes and/or self-reported cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Diabetes is a medical condition caused by long-term abnormally high blood glucose, leading to the damage of other tissue and organs, including the kidneys.

Another cause of chronic kidney disease is kidney disease. Early diagnosis of chronic kidney disease can often keep chronic kidney disease from getting worse.

Late diagnosis of chronic kidney disease may eventually lead to kidney failure, leading to dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain life.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of kidneys, researchers evaluated the effects of the anti-inflammatory effect of omega-3 fatty acids on patients with chronic kidney disease(CKD).

By searching the medical literature on the database from inception to August 2016, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs) derived from multiple databases, and the effect of omega-3 fatty acids supplementation compared to control cohorts, researchers identified a total of 12 RCTs involving 487 patients were included in the meta-analysis.

Among 254 patients receiving omega-3 fatty acids and 233 patients served as controls who received placebo, there is
* There is no statistical significance in serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) (SMD, -0.20; 95% CI, -0.44 to 0.05; P = 0.11),

* The levels of pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 associated with the CKD showed insignificant change in both omega 3 and control groups.

* Additionally, chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the constitution of chronic inflammation through the expression of elevated levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) also showed insignificant changes in both groups.

Based on the findings, researchers suggested, "there is insufficient evidence to conclude the benefit of omega-3 fatty acids oral supplementation in reducing serum levels of CRP, IL-6, and TNF-α in patients with CKD".

In other words, omega-3 fatty acids may not be used for reducing complications of patients with CKD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Antioxidant Beta-Sitosterol Demonstrates Anti-Hyperuricemic Effects in Vivo

Anti-hyperuricemic activity is the process including the use of anti-Xanthine oxidase inhibitors to reduce the levels of uric acid levels in the body.

Uric acid, the form of ions and salts is a by-product of chemicals after the body breaks down purines, the substance is found in many foods, including Asparagus, Bacon, Beef, Bluefish, Bouillon, Calf tongue, Carp, Cauliflower, Chicken, Chicken soup, Codfish, Crab, Duck, Goose, etc..

High levels of uric acid in blood serum can be harmful, leading to gout and forming of kidney stones.

Gout mostly effected one joint, is an acute and recurrent condition of arthritis as a result of uric acid building up in the blood, inducing joint inflammation.

According to a cross-sectional survey of a total of 6584 adults (3394 women, 3190 men) conducted by Second Military Medical University, on the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and gout showed that symptoms occurred more frequently in the following sites:
* Knee 7.0%
* Lower back 5.6%(95% CI 5.0-6.2%),
* Shoulder 4.7%
* Neck 2.4%
Women complained of rheumatic symptoms more frequently than men. In fact, symptoms are quite noticeable, you may feel well when you go to bed but wake up during the night with intense pain in one or few joints and sometimes with a fever. The symptoms may go away in a few days but can return from time to time. Chronic gout can cause lumps below the skin around joints.

Kidney stones are composed of mineral salts formed in the kidneys. Men account for 80% of those with kidney stones and are at risk of the formings between 30 and 40 years of age. About 75% of kidney stones are calcium stones.

Uric acid stones occur in 10% of all kidney stones and are the second-most-common cause of urinary stones after calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate calculi(

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with uric acid, researchers elucidated the L. trichocarpha ethanolic extract (LTE), ethyl acetate fraction from ethanolic extract (LTA), and isolated compounds urate-lowering activity and liver xanthine oxidase (XOD) inhibition on oxonate-induced hyperuricemic mice.

According to the tested differentiation,* Crude ethanolic extract and its ethyl acetate fraction showed significant urate-lowering effects.

* LTE also significantly inhibited liver xanthine oxidase (XOD) activity in vivo at the dose of 250mg/kg.

* Luteolin, apigenin, lupeol, lychnopholide, and eremantholide C isolated compounds showed anti-hyperuricemic activities among tested compounds.

* Furthermore, LTE, LTA, lupeol, β-sitosterol, lychnopholide, eremantholide, luteolin, and apigenin were also found to inhibit monosodium urate crystals-induced paw edema in mice.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Ethanolic extract of Lychnophora trichocarpha and some of its bioactive compounds may be promising agents for the treatment of gouty arthritis since they possess both anti-hyperuricemic and anti-inflammatory properties".

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol found abundantly in Ethanolic extract of Lychnophora trichocarpha may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of hyperuricemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Antioxidant Omega -3 Fatty Acids Inhibit the Risk of Breast Density induced Breast Cancer in Obese

The women's breasts are made up of specialized tissue that produces milk (glandular tissue) and fatty tissue. The size of a women's breast is totally determined by the amount of fat.

Breast density is a term that refers to relatively high amounts of glandular tissue and fibrous connective tissue and relatively low amounts of fatty tissue in the breast seen by a mammogram.

Besides genetic preposition, younger age women, women with a lower-body max index, and taking hormone therapy in menopausal women have been found to have higher breast density.

Epidemiologically, women who have a high breast density are at an increased risk of breast cancer. Therefore, this group of women is recommended to have regular mammogram testing beginning at age 40 and consider repeating the screening annually.

Breast cancer is a medical condition associated with abnormal cell growth in the breast tissue due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissues of the breast either from the milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

At the early stage of breast cancer, most patients experience the forming of lumps or modules on the breast or nearby breast tissue.

However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of swelling of all or part of a breast, breast or nipple pain, nipple retraction, and large lumps on the breast.

Some invasive breast cancer in this stage can also induce secondary metastasis through the blood and fluids circulation.

According to the statistic, women diagnosed with breast cancer at stages 0 and 1 have a 5 years of survival rate of 100%. In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of breast cancer, researchers compared the effects of Lovaza (n-3FA) on breast density in obese and nonobese women.

According to the Isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) method used to analyze plasma from obese and lean women at each time point (baseline, 12 and 24-months, n = 10 per group), several differentially expressed proteins (hemopexin precursor, vitamin D binding protein isoform 1 precursor [VDBP], fibronectin isoform 10 precursors [FN], and α-2 macroglobulin precursor [A2M]) associated with inflammatory expression and breast cancer risk.

More precisely, according to the Western blot analysis, n-3FA administration alters the expression of parameters associated with inflammation and exerted a tumor protective activity in obese, including the aforementioned proteins.

Moreover, the posthoc analysis also revealed that n-3FA administration reduced BD selectively in obese postmenopausal women.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention of breast cancer by reducing the breast density, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
