Phytochemical Alliin Inhibits the Onset of High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, a condition characterized by elevated blood pressure in the arteries. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

In other words, the heart has to work harder to circulate blood to the body needs in high blood pressure patients. Long-term d elevate blood pressure raises the pressure of the heart, leading to damage to the heart tissue in facilitating the risk of cardiovascular disease.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, approximately 54% of adults in the US are living with high blood pressure and half of that have an uncontrol condition.

Believe it or not, in the US, high blood pressure is a major cause of heart disease and stroke and a leading cause of death.

Many factors have been found to increase the risk of high blood pressure, including, tobacco or excessive alcohol drinking, chronic medical conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes and sleep apnea.

Some researchers suggested that the promotion of the Western diet with high consumption of salt may have a strong effect on increasing the prevalence of high blood pressure over the past few decades.

Dr. the lead scientist wrote, "Over the past century, salt has been the subject of intense scientific research related to blood pressure elevation and cardiovascular mortalities".

And, "The World Health Organization (WHO) strongly recommended reducing dietary salt intake as one of the top priority actions to tackle the global non-communicable disease crisis and has urged member nations to take action to reduce population-wide dietary salt intake to decrease the number of deaths from hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and stroke".

In other words, by following a healthy diet and moderate exercise, high blood pressure is preventable.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of hypertension, researchers examined the effect of Lichtwer garlic powder (containing 1.3% alliin equivalent to 0.6% allicin)on blood pressure.

The study included rats fed either by a 2% high cholesterol diet with and without aqueous garlic powder extract given orally to rats on a daily basis for 6 weeks or control rats fed a normal diet.

Compared to elevated levels of cholesterol in the rat fed with cholesterol diet without garlic extract, rats fed with a high cholesterol diet mixed with garlic powder showed a significant reduction in their serum cholesterol levels.

The high blood pressure of rats induced by cholesterol diet was also inhibited by garlic powder.

In other words, the blood pressure of the animals receiving garlic powder and high cholesterol diet was significantly lower as compared to other groups without affecting levels of glucose and protein.

Based on the results, researchers after taking other factors into account wrote, " garlic is beneficial in reducing...systolic blood pressure in hypercholesterolemic rats".

And, "Our experimental results show that garlic may beneficially affect two risk factors for... and hypertension".

Moreover, the Tel Aviv University study in the comparison of the effects of a new stable synthetic compound produced by a chemical reaction between allicin and the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor captopril and alliin and captopril suggested CPSSA in high dose significantly decreased blood pressure, triglycerides, and homocysteine concentrations compared to alliin with a slight effect on SBP and Captopril (50mg/(kg day)) only improved blood pressure and homocysteine.

More precisely, Dr. Oron-Herman M, the lead scientist wrote, " the combined molecule CPSSA integrates the anti-hypertensive, lipid-lowering, and homocysteine-reducing effects of both allicin and captopril, making it a potential cardiovascular protective agent".

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Turmeric Inhibits the Infectious Disease Caused by Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

Infectious diseases are disorders induced by organisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites.

Out of trillions organism present on the earth, only a few hundreds have been known to cause diseases.

Most infectious diseases are passed from person to person through direct or indirect contact with the infected patient. Others can be transmitted by insects or animals.

However, infectious disease, the most prevalence in the third world countries are acquired by ingesting contaminated food or water.

Infectious diseases share the common symptoms of fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, coughing, fatigue similar to those of influenza. Other symptoms are totally depending on the types of organisms including bacteria, and virus.

In conventional medicine, except for viral infection, organisms induced infection can be treated with

antibiotics. If you are taking antibiotics for the treatment of chronic infection, please make sure that you know all the side effects for preventive measure.

Believe it or not, most cases of the infectious disease were stopped in the acute phase of infection. In which the immune system activated the first line of defense by destroying the pathogen before they have the chance of multiplication.

However, people with a weakened immune system such as the elderly and immature immune system such as the infants are prone to infectious disease.

Dr. Mouton CP, the lead scientist in the analysis of the immune system and disease associated with infection in the elderly wrote, "Infectious diseases account for one-third of all deaths in people 65 years and older... A change in mental status or decline in function may be the only presenting problem in an older patient with an infection. An estimated 90 percent of deaths resulting from pneumonia occur in people 65 years and older" and "Mortality resulting from influenza also occurs primarily in the elderly".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In the urgency to discover a natural antiviral infection for the treatment of infectious diseases, researchers examined the effect of β-cyclodextrin (CD) functionalized graphene oxide (GO) composite, against the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which is considered as the major viral pathogen of the lower respiratory tract of infants.

According to the results from the tissue culture infectious dose assay and immunofluorescence assay, curcumin loaded functional GO exerted a significant activity in the inhibition for RSV infection.

Furthermore, curcumin loaded functional GO improved greatly the biocompatibility to the host cells.

In other words, the composite inhibited the infection caused by the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) without causing harm to the healthy cell in the tested cells.

Dr. the leads scientist after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "the composite could prevent RSV from infecting the host cells by directly inactivating the virus and inhibiting the viral attachment, and possessed prophylactic and therapeutic effects towards the virus.

Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered a supplement for the prevention and combined with chemical compound for the treatment of viral infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Bilberry, The Natural Anti Inflammatory Functional Food

Inflammation is a natural process to protect our body against foreign stimuli or pathogens.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune system first line of defense responds to the bodily injury by stimulating the blood palette to the cover the site of damage and production of proinflammatory cytokines to kill off the pathogens which attempt to enter the body through the wound.

Overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines can also cause serious damage to the nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars.

Most cases of infection were stopped at the acute phase of infection with 3 to 8 weeks. However, people with a weakened immune system, the acute infection may continue and progress to chronic inflammatory disease.

Some researchers suggested the immune system has evolved to protect our body by killing off all the foreign invasion within a set period of time, otherwise, it will adapt to the new change, leading to low-grade inflammation.

Low-grade inflammation is a chronic production, but a low-grade state, of inflammatory factors that have been found in a number of chronic diseases such as obesity and chronic pain.

Dr. Rosa Casas, the lead scientist in the examination of diet effects in chronic inflammatory disease wrote, "Unhealthy diets that include high intake of red and processed meat, sweets and desserts, potatoes, French fries, and refined grains) is associated with high plasma inflammatory biomarkers and a greater risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes (T2D), cancer and other chronic diseases".

And, "On the other hand, prudent dietary patterns such as Mediterranean diet as well as intake of fruit, vegetables, extra virgin olive oil, walnuts, legumes, whole grains, fish, cocoa, coffee, tea and wine is associated with a reduced plasma inflammatory biomarkers and a lower risk of CVD, T2D and other chronic disease".

The findings strongly suggested the risk of chronic low-grade inflammatory diseases can be reduced by following a healthy diet.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In the course of finding natural ingredients for the treatment of diseases associated with inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the anti-inflammatory activity of anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract used as a supplement for ocular health worldwide.

The study included a mouse model of endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU) compared to those of injecting lipopolysaccharide to show retinal inflammation.

According to the results of a tested assay, anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract pretreatment prevented the impairment of photoreceptor cell function that had been suppressed by injection of endotoxin and lipopolysaccharide by restoring the decreased and the shortening of outer segments of the infected cells.

Furthermore, the extract inhibited the production of inflammatory cytokines and rhodopsin decrease causes by endotoxin and lipopolysaccharide in the activation of a protein (STAT 3) associated with the regulation of cellular functions.

Moreover, by examining the inflammatory assay, the anti-inflammatory effect of anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract was attributed to the inhibition of the expression of free radical and activation of NF-κB, a redox-sensitive transcription factor, in the inflamed retina.

The results strongly suggested that anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract has a protective effect on visual function against retinal inflammation.

Additionally, in order to reveal more information of bilberry antiinflammatory activity, researchers investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of bilberry extract (BE, containing 42.04% anthocyanin) on Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) plus lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced liver injury and croton oil-induced ear edema in mice.

Injection of BE exerted a significant effect in the inhibition of croton oil-induced ear edema and liver inflammation provoked by P. acnes plus LPS observed by decreased levels of oxidative stress markers such as the plasma alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase with no side effects.

The levels of liver mRNA levels in the expression of proteins involved the production of inflammatory cytokines elevated by injection of croton oil and LPS were inhibited by the administration of BE.

Also, BE treatment reduced the liver oxidative stress caused by overexpression of malondialdehyde and NO contents significantly.

In other words, BE has a strong protective effect against acute and immunological inflammation.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with inflammation, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Coffee Increases Risk of GERD in Geographical or Racial Differences?

Whole food ingredients in the herbal plant have been found to process some significant effects in reduced risk and treatment of certain diseases, but single-ingredient isolated from such plants may induce opposite responses.

Epidemiological studies linking coffee intake in the risk of Gastro-esophageal reflux disease have been inconsistent and contradictory.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a digestive disorder, affected ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach, inducing symptoms of heartburn or acid indigestion.

Pathophysiological changes in esophageal functions that occur with aging may, at least in part is responsible for the high prevalence of Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD).

In the review of online literature published database from Med, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library up to December 2012, researchers at the Seoul National University Hospital filed the following results
1. A meta-analysis showed that the intake of coffee exerted no significantly associated risk of GERD.
2. Only the endoscopy group showed a significantly higher odds ratio risk induced by coffee in compared to other subgroups.

But after accounting to other risk factors, such as the amount of coffee intake, quality of the study, and assessment of exposure researchers found that coffee intake does not associate to increased risk of GERD.

Other, in the study to investigate the association of habits and social conditions reported lead to reflux in the employees of hospital, researchers indicated that even with the the prevalence rate of 21.7% of GERD incidence in this group of participants, intake of coffee daily and regularly showed no effect in increased risk GERD, regardless to amount of coffee intake per day.

Contrast to the above studies, the Korean prospective study of recruited subjects with GERD visited a health promotion center for upper gastrointestinal cancer surveillance at Hallym Medical Center (five institutions) between January 2008 and February 2009, researchers reported that
1. Coffee intake showed a significant correlation to the independent risk of GERD in young and adults groups
2. and Coffee intake was considered as a major risk factor in the elderly group.

Dr. Park CH, the lead author said, "The risk factors for RE according to age group were found to differ. In elderly group, Helicobacter pylori infection was not a significant protective factor contrary to young and adult groups.

Taking all together, Coffee intake showed a conflict result in a risk of GERD, probably due to geographic difference as the Asian population is susceptible to the risk of the diseases in compared to population in the West. Further studies are necessary.

Maternal Coffee > 4 Cups/day or Coffee Caffeine > 2 Cups/day Intake in the Increased Risk of Spontaneous Abortion (SAB)

Risk of spontaneous abortion (SAB) is increased substantially in the excessive coffee women during pregnancy, some studies suggested.

Spontaneous abortion is a clinically recognized pregnancy loss within the 20 weeks of gestation.

According to the World Organization of Health, fetus expulsion or extraction, weighing 500 g or less. are considered spontaneous abortion.

Believe or not, spontaneous abortion happens quite common in the early stage of pregnancy and the risk is decreased substantially with increasing gestational age.

Genetically, the causes of spontaneous abortion (SAB) are associated with mutation of genes inherited from the parents. researchers found that genes that cause the alternation of intrauterine fetal demise, blighted ovum, partial and molar pregnancy are the most common forms of spontaneous abortion.

Externally, maternal age, poor diet, excessive use of alcohol, smoking, untreated thyroid disease uncontrolled diabetes, use of certain medication and the physical problem with reproductive organs are associated with a significant risk of the incidence.

Furthermore, women who have a family history and previous miscarriage are also at the higher risk of the onset of spontaneous abortion (SAB).

Coffee, one of the most popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In a case-controlled study conducted in Milan of 561 (72%) cases of spontaneous abortion and 877 (57%) controls, coffee drinking during the first trimester of the index pregnancy with healthy women who gave birth at term (> 37 weeks gestation) to healthy infants as control, researchers found that
* Coffee intake of 1, 2 or 3, and 4 or more cups of coffee per day, are associated to increase the risk of 1.2, 1.8 and 4.0, respectively in compared to nondrinkers.

* The risk of pregnancy loss also is associated to the duration in years of coffee drinking. The estimated multivariate odds ratios of spontaneous abortion were 1.1 compared to non-coffee intake group.

Furthermore, in the evaluated effect of caffeine in influence of miscarriage researchers at the Boston University School of Public Health, conducted a prospective cohort study included 5132 Danish women planning pregnancy, enrolled from 2007 to 2010, after carefully assessing the returned beverage consumption on questionnaires, researcher found that spontaneous abortion (SAB) is 1.62 higher in women consumed more than 300 mg/day of caffeine per day, in compared to 1.09 in women who consume <100 mg/day.
Specifically, women with a daily intake of the caffeine of
* <100 mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 1.09.

* 100-199mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 0,89.

* 200-299mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 1.33.

Interestingly, in prospective cohort study included 15,590 pregnancies from 11,072 women with no history of SAB in the Nurses' Health Study II (1991-2009) with beverage intake assessed every 4 years using a validated questionnaire in case pregnancies lost spontaneously at <20 weeks gestation, total coffee intake had a positive, linear association with SAB.

Compared to non-pre-pregnancy coffee intake, the risk of SAB increased by 20% for women consuming ≥4 servings/day.

More importantly, Dr. Gaskins AJ, the lead author said, "Pre-pregnancy coffee consumption at levels ≥4 servings/day is associated with increased risk of SAB, particularly at weeks 8-19".

Taking together, there is no doubt that caffeinated coffee may contribute to a relative risk of spontaneous abortion (SAB) for women consuming more than 4 cups per day.

Women who are pregnant between 12 to 20 weeks of gestation with excessive coffee intake habit are recommended to consult with their doctors.

Healthy Food Onion Protect the Liver cells Against Alcoholic Cytotoxicity

The liver is the largest organ in the human body that not only filters out blood coming from the digestive system but also secretes bile to aid digestion, produce vitamin D and steroid hormone and build strong cell walls.

The liver also detoxes the drug and environmental toxicity before they can cause damage to the human body.

Alcoholic cytotoxicity is a condition that excessive alcohol that induces healthy cell DNA alteration or cell death.

Excessive alcohol drinking epidemiologically is a major cause of alcoholic liver disease. Over time, the formation of liver scars not only promote the onset of cirrhosis also enhances the risk of liver cancer.

Some researchers suggested, there is a possible link associated with cytotoxicity of ethanol on the cells lining the tissues in direct contact with alcoholic beverages that solves the initiation of local carcinogenesis.

According to the recent study posted on the PubMed, short-term exposures (2-3 s) to ethanol concentrations between 10% and 15% have facilitated the cytotoxic effect on human epithelial keratinocytes in a concentration-dependent manner.

In other words, long-term injection of alcoholic beverages containing cytotoxic concentrations of ethanol, or diluting ethanol to cytotoxic concentrations can increase the risk of cancer, particularly to those of oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and esophagus.

Diseases associated with alcoholic cytotoxicity are preventable by changing the way of drinking and replace alcoholic beverages containing non-cytotoxic concentrations of ethanol or diluting ethanol to non-cytotoxic concentrations.

Dr. Guillén-Mancina E in the evaluation of the cytotoxic concentrations of ethanol in the risk of cancer wrote, "Alcohol consumption is a known risk factor for cancer. Almost 6% of all cancers worldwide are attributable to alcohol use. Approximately half of them occur in tissues highly exposed to ethanol, such as the oral cavity, pharynx, upper larynx and esophagus".

And "However, since ethanol is not mutagenic and the mutagenic metabolite of ethanol (acetaldehyde) is mainly produced in the liver".

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of liver cancer, researchers examined the effects of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), one of the major colonic microflora-produced catabolites of quercetin glycosides derived from the onion.

In murine hepatoma Hepa1c1c7 cells used in the study of the regulation of chemoprotective enzymes, administration of DOPAC exerted a significant activity in the modulation of the aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) catalyzed oxidation.

Furthermore, the cytotoxicity induced by the acetaldehyde-induced cytotoxicity in vitro also was inhibited by the expression of DOPAC.

Moreover, in the modulation of the activity of the enzyme ALDH, DOPAC also enhanced the gene expression of ALDH1A1, ALDH2, and ALDH3A1 in a concentration-dependent manner.

In other words, the DOPAC protects the Hepa1c1c7 cells against alcohol-induced oxidative stress in the induction cytotoxicity that has been found to cause protein, lipid and cell damage.

The results strongly suggested that DOPAC isolated from onion inhibited the expression of alcoholic influence that leads to the damage of normal liver cells.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "DOPAC acts as a potential ALDH inducer to prevent the alcohol-induced abnormal reaction".

Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver alcoholic cytotoxicity pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Whole Food Cucumber Inhibits All Parameters Associated with Insulin Resistance In Vivo

Insulin Resistance, a hallmark in patients with type II diabetes is the condition in which the cells in tissues that start to resist or ignore the signal of the hormone insulin.

In other words, the insulin produced by the body no longer can convert glucose to energy even with the presence of the hormone insulin, leading to high levels of glucose in the bloodstream.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, approximately, 1 in 3 people in the United States have prediabetes, including half of those age 60 and older.

People with insulin resistance has been found to increase the risk for prediabetes, type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Although researchers do not know the exact cause of insulin resistance, they do not certain risk factors such as genetic preposition, aging, and ethnicity are associated with the onset of the condition.

However, an unhealthy lifestyle that causes excess body weight, too much belly fat, smoking and lack of exercise are the most prevalent factors in the Western world.

Dr. Martin O. Weickert wrote, "Insulin resistance has been proposed as the strongest single predictor for the development of Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM). Chronic oversupply of energy from food, together with inadequate physical activity, has been recognized as the most relevant factors leading to overweight, abdominal adiposity, insulin resistance, and finally T2DM".

And, "Conversely, energy-reduced diets almost invariably to facilitate weight loss and reduce abdominal fat mass and insulin resistance. However, sustained weight loss is generally difficult to achieve, and distinct metabolic characteristics in patients with T2DM further compromise success".

The findings strongly suggested that by maintaining a healthy lifestyle including a healthy diet and moderate exercise, insulin resistance is preventable.

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of insulin resistance, researchers investigated the effect of the effects of Cucumis melo L. (Cucumis) on obesity-induced insulin resistance (IR) in genetically leptin-deficient Lepob/Lepob mice.

According to the results of the tested assays, Cucumis showed significant activity in the improvement of IR in obese mice and inhibition of inflammation in adipose tissue and blood.

The efficacy of Cucumis against insulin resistance of the tested mice was also attributed to the enhancement of the ratio of gut microbiota in the gut-associated with the improvement of insulin sensitivity.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, " administration of Cucumis improved IR by reducing inflammation, thereby changing the gut microbiota composition. Cucumis is thus a promising treatment for obesity-induced insulin resistance and the inflammatory state".

The Lund University in the study of glycemic and insulinemic responses to fermentation products suggested that adding pickled cucumber to breakfast with a high-glycemic-index bread significantly lowered postprandial glycemia and insulinemia compared to no metabolic response of regular milk and fresh cucumber.

In other words, fermentation products such a prickle play an essential role in reducing the risk of insulin resistance.

Maternal Coffee Intake > 4 Cups/Day May Increase Risk of Miscarriage, Scientists Suggest

The risk of miscarrying is increased substantially in excessive (over 4 cups/day) coffee drinkers during pregnancy, an Asian study suggested.

A miscarriage, according to the definition is the loss of a fetus before the 20th week of pregnancy.

Believe or not, according to medical literature, as many as 50% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage and over 80% of miscarriages are occurring within the first three months of pregnancy.

Some researchers suggested that women who carry mutation genes associated with chromosome gains and losses during embryonic development can lead to miscarriage or the failure of IVF treatments.

Other risk factors associated with an increased risk of miscarriage include aging Age. Women who are older than age 35, previous miscarriages. smoking and excessive alcohol drinking before and during pregnancy have a higher risk of miscarriage compared to younger women,

Chronic medical health conditions such as obesity and uterine or cervical problems can also substantially increase the miscarriage risk.

Coffee, one of the most popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In a case-controlled study conducted in Milan of 561 (72%) cases of spontaneous abortion and 877 (57%) controls, coffee drinking during the first trimester of the index pregnancy with healthy women who gave birth at term (> 37 weeks gestation) to healthy infants as control, researchers reported that the risk of miscarrying is classified as follows
* Coffee intake of 1, 2 or 3, and 4 or more cups of coffee per day are associated with an increased risk of 1.2, 1.8 and 4.0, respectively, compared to nondrinkers.

* The risk of pregnancy loss also is associated with the duration in years of coffee drinking. The estimated multivariate odds ratios of spontaneous abortion were 1.1 in comparison to non-coffee intake group.

Furthermore, in the evaluated effect of caffeine in influence of miscarriage researchers at the Boston University School of Public Health, conducted a prospective cohort study included 5132 Danish women planning pregnancy, enrolled from 2007 to 2010, after carefully assessed the returned beverage consumption on questionnaires, researcher found that a significantly miscarried risk is 1.62 higher in women consuming more than 300 mg/day of caffeine per day, in compared to 1.09 in women who consume <100 mg/day. Specifically, women with daily intake of caffeine of
* <100 mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 1.09.

* 100-199mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 0,89.

* 200-299mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 1.33

Additionally, in prospective cohort study included 15,590 pregnancies from 11,072 women with no history of SAB in the Nurses' Health Study II (1991-2009) with beverage intake assessed every 4 years using a validated questionnaire in case pregnancies lost spontaneously at <20 weeks gestation, total coffee intake had a positive, linear association with SAB.

In compared to non-pre-pregnancy coffee intake, the risk of SAB increased by 20% for women consuming ≥4 servings/day.

More importantly, Dr. Gaskins AJ, the lead author said, "Pre-pregnancy coffee consumption at levels ≥4 servings/day is associated with the increased risk of SAB, particularly at weeks 8-19".

Taking together, there is no doubt that coffee may contribute to a relative risk of miscarrying for women consuming more than 4 cups per day.

Women who are pregnant between 12 to 28 weeks of gestation with excessive coffee intake habit are recommended to consult with their doctors.

Coffee and Coffee Caffeine Influences Sleep Pattern and Quality in Doses Dependent Manner

Compared to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer than six months to ease symptoms, depending on the stage of the treatment which directly addresses the cause of disease.

Coffee and coffee caffeine may have a strong effect in prolonged sleep latency, reduced total sleep time and sleep efficiency and worsened perceived sleep quality, a joint study lead by the University of Zürich postulated.
Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In a review systematically explores evidence from epidemiological studies and randomized controlled trials. researchers filed the below interesting results
1. Caffeine affected sleep quality more in of older adults compared to younger adults.
2. Pronounced individual differences are also present in young people,
3. The genetic complex may also play an important role in individual sensitivity to sleep disruption by caffeine.

Furthermore, researchers also expressed the concerns of studies in the review with mostly conducted in male adults of Western countries, which may limit the generalizability of the findings

Other, in the study of active-duty military personnel (N = 366) returned from deployments to Afghanistan or Iraq in seeking treatment for PTSD, researchers found that
1. Higher caffeine use in these group veterans showed a lower insomnia symptom severity compared to elevated insomnia symptom severity in no caffeine use group.

2. Caffeine use was not associated with any other measures of sleep disturbance or PTSD symptoms.

The study also explained that caffeine does not induce a greater effect in insomnia and sleep disturbances in this sample probably due to the result of insomnia symptoms was already elevated in this sample, instead of insomnia symptoms severity abstained from any caffeine intake.

Interestingly, in a 13-night sleep laboratory study of 18 normal young adult males twice received 1 cup of warm water, 1-, 2-, and 4-cup equivalents of regular coffee, a 4-cup equivalent of decaffeinated coffee, and a 4-cup equivalent of caffeine administered 30 min before bedtime according to balanced Latin-square design,

1. Coffee intake showed a dose-related change in most standard electroencephalogram-electrooculogram (EEG-EOG) in sleep parameters.
2. Regular coffee and caffeine intake caused rapid eye movement (REM) sleep to shift to the early part of the night and stages 3 and 4 sleep to shift to the later part.
3. Decaffeinated coffee had no effect

Taking all together, there is no doubt that coffee may have a found effect in affecting sleep pattern and sleep quality in the dose-dependent manner. People with a history of insomnia and sleep disturbance should reduce the intake of coffee and only drink them in the morning.

Healthy Food Onion Promotes the Normal Vascular Functioning

Vascular protection is the process to protect the function of blood vessel associated with the reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.

More precisely, vascular protection is the mediation to enhance endothelial cell survival, suppression of thrombosis, and anti-inflammation accompanied by the inhibition of vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation.

Vascular dysfunction is a condition that causes arterial stiffness, microvascular and endothelial dysfunction and increases the risk of CVD.

Endothelial cells found in the endothelium that line the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels by separating the circulating blood or lymph in the lumen and the rest of the vessel wall process some main functions, including acting as a semi-selective barrier between the vessel lumen and surrounding tissue and transporting white blood cells into and out of the bloodstream.

Endothelial dysfunction is a medical condition that reduces the function of the endothelium caused by the failure of the endothelial inner lining of the small arteries to function normally, affecting the cardio-functioning.

Epidemiologically, endothelial dysfunction has been found to induce cardiovascular conditions, including coronary artery disease (CAD), hypertension, and diastolic dysfunction.

Coagulation is a process of blood clotting. Overexpression of coagulation has been found to induce thrombosis.

Inflammation associated with plaque biology has been found to trigger the thrombotic complications and arterial stiffness of atherosclerosis.

Microvascular dysfunction is a condition that causes abnormal function of the small blood vessels feeding the heart muscle, leading to heart diseases and stroke.

Collectively, cardiovascular protection plays a critical role to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

On finding a potent ingredient to protect the blood vessel against inflammation, researchers investigated the vascular protective effects of onion and garlic on vascular inflammation in an animal model.

The study included 30-day-old male Wistar rats that were assigned to control (C), F (10% fructose in drinking water), F+T (tempol 1 mM as control antioxidant), F+G, and F+O with aqueous G and O extracts administered orally in doses of 150 and 400 mg/kg/d respectively, followed by injection of tempol during the last 8 weeks of a 14-week period.

Fructose-fed rats (FFR) before treatment of garlic and onion had developed insulin resistance, aortic NADPH oxidase activity associated with the elevated levels of free radicals.

Furthermore, systolic blood pressure and plasma TBARS associated with lipid peroxidation and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) expression in mesenteric arteries were also found to increase in the fructose-fed rats (FFR) rats.

In other words, fructose-fed rats (FFR) showed a significant plaque accumulation in the arteries.

Moreover, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) associated with cardioprotective activity in the heart was also decreased in the FFR rats.

Administration of garlic and onion to FFR rats reversed all parameters involved in cardiovascular dysfunction were inhibited observed by the reduced levels of oxidative stress, increased eNOS activity, and also attenuated VCAM-1 expression.

Taken altogether, onion used alone or combined with garlic may be considered remedies for vascular protection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Caffeinated Coffee, The Beverage Which Protects Skin Against Aging by Increasing Micro-Vascular Function in Skin, Scientists Reveal

Moderate intake of caffeinated coffee regularly may have a particular effect in protecting the skin against aging, a joint institutes study suggested.

Skin aging is a natural process that cannot be reversed. However, by looking after our skin through a change of diet and lifestyle and reduced skin exposure to substances which have the potential to cause skin damage, skin aging process can be delayed.

Dr. Silke K. Schagen, the lead author in the study of Discovering the link between nutrition and skin aging wrote, "Vitamins, carotenoids, tocopherols, flavonoids and a variety of plant extracts have been reported to possess potent antioxidant properties and have been widely used in the skincare industry either as topically applied agents or oral supplements in an attempt to prolong youthful skin appearance"

These results suggested that regular intake of fruits and vegetable with abundant nutrients and antioxidants may have a strong effect in delaying skin aging process.

Additionally, in the study of lifestyle and risk of skin aging in Japanese, Dr. Keiko Asakura, the lead scientists suggested, "Smoking status and topical sun protection were significantly associated with signs of visible skin aging in this study population" and " (There are) significant differences between sexes in the severity of hyperpigmentation, texture, and pores, but not wrinkling".

More precisely, skin aging can be caused by a number of factors, including
* The intrinsic aging of the skin are factors that cannot be controlled, such as gene inherited from the parents, hormone change and cellular recession due to aging.

* The extrinsic aging of the skin are factors that can or cannot be prevented, such as sun exposure, smoking, air pollution, bad eating habits, and physical inactivity.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In the review of coffee caffeine effect in skin blood flow, researchers at the study lead by the Linköping University showed that intake of caffeinated coffee exhibits a stronger expression in increased skin microvascular response to transdermal iontophoresis of acetylcholine (ACh)( non‐invasively introduce vasoactive drugs in regulating the neurotransmitter at neuromuscular junctions), in compared to decaffeinated coffee intake group.

The study also found that coffee caffeine intake displayed a significant effect on microvascular responses in increasing blood flow to the skin but decreasing blood flow in the fingertips, during the first hour after of drinking;

These result suggested that caffeine in coffee showed an enormous activity in increasing blood flow to the body's skin.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study performed in 27 healthy volunteers with oral intake of a cup either caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee and reactive hyperemia of finger blood flow assessed by laser Doppler flowmetry, within an interval of more than 2 days, the same experimental protocol was repeated with another coffee in a crossover manner, researchers showed that caffeinated coffee intake group demonstrated a slightly decreased finger blood flow in compared to decaffeinated coffee intake group.

According to the index of post-occlusive reactive hyperemia, microvascular endothelial function, in compared with decaffeinated coffee intake, the caffeine contained showed an important effect in enhanced microvascular function in healthy individuals.

Taking together, the findings suggested that intake of coffee caffeine exerted a significant effect in promoted skin blood flow through a microvascular function which may have a strong impact in reducing the risk of skin aging.

Onion, the Best Liver Protective Healthy Food

The liver is the largest internal organ and the only organ in the human body that can regenerate itself.

The liver is the first line of the bodily toxin defense by filtering the blood comes from the digestive tract, before passing them to the rest of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol that plays a critical role in building a strong cell wall, producing steroid hormones and vitamin D and aiding the digestive function in food absorption and detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

The hepatoprotective or liver protective effect is an action that maintains the healthy function of the liver against any harmful toxins.

Symptoms of liver diseases include jaundice, abdominal pain, and swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine, and pale stool color, and tendency to bruise easily.

There are no exact causes of liver disease. Viruses, toxins, genetics, alcohol, and unknown causes are some prevalent factors found in patients with chronic liver disease, inclduing cancer.

In the US, most cases of liver disease are a result of hepatitis viral infection and autoimmune diseases. Infectious viral hepatitis can produce toxins to protect them against the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body and prevent the attack of the systematic immune response.

Furthermore, in recent year, excessive alcohol drinking has been found to induce alcoholic liver disease in many parts of Asia and America.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belongings to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

On finding a potential compound which processes liver protective activity, researchers examined the effects of onion and garlic extracts on cadmium (Cd)-induced liver oxidative damage in rats.

The study included
* Cd group was challenged with 3CdSO(4).8H(2)O (as Cd; 1.5 mg/kg bw per day per oral) alone, and
* The extract-treated groups were pretreated with varying doses of onion and/or garlic extract (0.5 and 1.0 ml/100 g bw per day per oral) for a week and thereafter co-treated with Cd (1.5 mg/kg bw per day per oral) for 3 weeks.

Based on the tested differentiation, Cd group showed a significant increase in the levels of lipid peroxidation and glutathione S-transferase, whereas antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase levels were decreased in the liver.

Furthermore, liver oxidative stress markers such as alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), and alkaline phosphatase were also found to increase in the Cd group.

In other words, Cd showed induced oxidative damage in rat liver.

Injection of garlic and onion extract not only inhibited all parameters in the Cd group but also exerted a liver protective effect in a dose-dependent manner.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "high dose of onion and a moderate dose of garlic extracts possibly via reduced lipid peroxidation and enhanced antioxidant defense system that is insufficient to prevent and protect Cd-induced hepatotoxicity".

Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver alcoholic cytotoxicity pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Coffee, The Potent Functional Beverage Which Blocks the Onset of Metabolic Syndrome, Studies Found

Coffee consumed daily and regularly may have a substantial and potential effect in blocking the onset of metabolic syndrome, some scientists suggested.

Metabolic Syndrome is a group of risk factors associated with the development of cardiovascular disease and types 2 diabetes, including high blood pressure, abnormally high blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels,.....

According to the statistic, about a quarter of the US population have metabolic syndrome and the numbers are increased at an alarming rate.

The Western diet with a high on saturated and trans, refine sugar, and salt and processed foods, is associated with the early onset of the condition.

Dr. Christos Pitsavos, in the evaluation of the effect of diet in the risk metabolic syndrome, wrote, "People with the metabolic syndrome may benefit from intensive lifestyle modifications including dietary changes and adopting a physically more active lifestyle".

These statements suggested that everyone can prevent the development of the syndrome through modification of their daily diet accompanied by a change to a healthy lifestyle.

The doctor continued, " During the last decades increasing scientific evidence has emerged that protective health effects can be obtained from diets that are rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains, and which include fish, nuts, and low-fat dairy products. Such diets need not be restricted in total fat intake as long as energy intake does not exceed caloric expenditure and if they emphasize predominantly vegetable oils that have a low content of saturated fats and partially hydrogenated oils".

Coffee, second to green tea, is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

According to the searching of database of PubMed and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) for relevant articles published between 1 January 1999 and 31 May 2015, including 11 published reports and 13 studies with a total of 159,805 participants eligible for our meta-analysis, the relative odd risk ratio of metabolic syndrome between the highest vs lowest category of coffee consumption was 0.872

The review also observed a nonlinear relationship between coffee and coffee caffeine consumption in the amelioration of risk of metabolic syndrome, by dose-response analysis.

Additionally, in a cross-sectional population-based survey of 8,821 adults (51.4% female) conducted in Krakow, Poland. to evaluate the coffee and tea consumption and risk of metabolic syndrome, using food frequency questionnaires, researchers after the observation of the questionnaire returned from participants expressed that there is an interesting association between high coffee consumption of 3 cups and the clusters of lower BMI, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides, and higher HDL cholesterol compared to those drinking less than 1 cup/day.

The study apparently indicated that people drinking 3 cups of coffee daily and regularly have a favorably ameliorated risk of metabolic syndrome even after adjusting for potential confounding factors.

More importantly, the study also pointed out that high coffee consumption was negatively associated with waist circumference, hypertension, and triglycerides in women but not in men.

Furthermore, in animal evaluation of the effect of coffee drinking on clinical markers of diabetes and metabolic syndrome in Zucker rats including Diabetic Zucker rats with metabolic syndrome and control Zucker rats, researchers at the Fluminense Federal Institute showed that animals received daily doses of coffee by gavage for 30 days express a substantially decreased risk of metabolic syndrome by reducing serum glucose, total cholesterol, and triglycerides, compared to non treatment group.

Dr. Abrahão SA, the lead researchers said, "The results demonstrate that treatment with roasted coffee drink, because of its hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effect, is efficient in the protection of animals with metabolic syndrome and diabetes mellitus type 2".

The findings from the above studies suggested that coffee drinking daily and regularly have a favorably profound effect in decreasing the risk of metabolic syndrome, particularly in women.
