Coffee and Coffee Caffeine Elevated and Ameliorated Menopause Symptoms Differently

Menopause is a natural and biological progression of women at a certain age. The reduced hormone levels of the inaction of ovaries induced menstruation stop and a set of symptoms

Coffee, second to green tea, is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

A study conducted by a renowned institute suggested that coffee and coffee caffeine may have a potential effect in reduced severity of some menopause symptoms and elevation of others.

In a cross-sectional survey conducted using the Menopause Health Questionnaire, completed by 2,507 consecutive women with menopausal concerns at the Women's Health Clinic at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) between July 25, 2005 and July 25, 2011, caffeine intake in participants showed a greater positive effect in expression of vasomotor symptom of menopause women in compared to non drinkers group.

Other, in a cross-sectional study of a community-based sample of 243 women with vasomotor symptoms to evaluate the menopause symptoms of hot flashes (HF) and night sweats (NS) in symptomatic middle-aged women, intake of coffee showed to elevate symptom of hot flashes (HF) and night sweats (NS) in compared to non drinkers.

And caffeine intake also is found as one of the predictors in exhibited both hot flashes (HF) and night sweats (NS) in the same study group.

But in the animal model, according to the behavioral tests and oxidative stress parameters in ovariectomized mice, caffeine intake also showed a significant in reduced symptoms of anxiety induced by oxidative stress.

Administration of low doses of caffeine, for a short period of time, maybe a new therapeutic approach to modulate the oxidative stress and anxiety in menopause, the "Iuliu Hatieganu" University of Medicine and Pharmacy postulated.

Taking all together, coffee and coffee caffeine may have a strong effect in reduced and elevated menopause symptoms, in types depending manner.

Cucumber Extract, A Natural Prevention and Treatment of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is an inflammatory disease mostly caused by work-related occupations and working environment, affecting the muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, and nerves, over time.

The disease is most prevalent in the US. Approximately 10% in men and 13% in women over the age of 60 years suffer from the condition.

In general population, OA affecting over 25 million people in the United States alone.

And, the numbers are increasing at an alarming rate due to the aging of the population and the obesity epidemic.

Most common symptoms of OA include pain in the joint(s), reduced movement of the joint(s), joint(s) tenderness and stiffness, particularly, the loss of flexibility and bone spurs.

If you have experienced some of the symptoms that do not get better in a short period of time, you may have OA.

Believe it or not, patients with OA are associated with the complications of a rapid, complete breakdown of cartilage, bone death (osteonecrosis) and stress fractures.

As of today, there is no cure for the condition, Treatment of OA conventionally are focusing on reducing the pain and progression of the disease and improving quality of life.

If you are taking medication for the treatment of OA, please make sure that you know all the side effects
Prolonged use of Acetaminophen has been found to cause liver damage.

In the prevention and management of OA, some researchers suggested
* Prevented recurrent injury to damage menisci
The meniscus is an important issue because if its function in shock absorption and load distribution in the healthy knee joint(111). A meniscal tear can lead to knee osteoarthritis (OA), but knee OA can also lead to a spontaneous breakdown of meniscal tear and damage to meniscal structure(112). Meniscus damage or recurrent injury might be considered as a signifying feature of incipient OA in middle-aged and elderly people(113).

*. Take precaution if your occupation is at increased risk of osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most important diseases as it frequently affects the active age group of the population contributed to the loss of working hours and of disability(114)(115)(117). Compressive, torsional, pulling and angular movements common in certain occupations or sports may result in injuries of soft tissue, thus increasing the development of OA(116).

* Muscle strengthening and aerobic exercises
Enhanced muscle strengthening with neuromuscular electrical stimulation(118), aerobic exercises(119) and exercise(220) are effective in reducing pain and improving physical function in patients with mild to moderate OA of the knee(220).

* Maintain a healthy weight(117)
Increased BMI and obesity are associated with more severe cartilage degeneration(121)(123) as assessed by both morphological and quantitative MRI measurements(122).

*Avoid dehydration
Dehydration has shown to reduce the mobility of collagen amino acid residues and carbon sugar ring structures in glycosaminoglycans, according to University of Michigan(124) of that may affect the functions of cartilage and induce the risk of OA(125), but dehydration effects are reversible, through the restoration of molecular structure and mobility(124).

* Avoid intake of inflammatory foods
Loading up on junk foods and fast foods contains a high amount of trans fat of that increases the risk of inflammation(126) exhibit pro-inflammatory effects(127) causes of osteoarthritis (OA)(128). Red meat, eggs, and wheat products all contain a high amount of arachidonic acid, too much arachidonic acid may be worsen the inflammation process(129), etc.

* Eat your fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables containing high amount of nutrients and antioxidant(130), can enhance immune defense system(131)within the joint through direct influences of transferrin performance for reduction of inflammation(131)(132) as well as suppressing free radicals and the chain of free radicals reaction cause of elevating the swelling and promoting degeneration(133)(134).

* Replace regular beverage with green tea
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate, a green tea polyphenol(135)(136), was found to be effective in reducing inflammatory cytokines induced inflammatory diseases(137)(138).

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA), age-related disease researchers compared the efficacy of Q-Actin™, an aqueous extract of Cucumis sativus (cucumber; CSE) against GC in the management of moderate knee OA.

The randomized double-blind, parallel-group clinical trial included 122 patients (56 males and 66 females) aged between 40 and 75 years with moderate knee OA took place in three different centers

Participants were divided evenly into 2 groups (n= 61) the GC group received orally the generally prescribed dose of 1,350 mg of GC twice daily and the CSE group received orally10 mg twice daily of CSE in a 180-day intervention.

According to the results from the Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), the WOMAC score of CSE group was decreased by 22.44% and 70.29% on Days 30 and 180, respectively, compared to a 14.80% and 32.81% to the decrease in the GC group.

Similarly, the GC also showed a decrease of pain score compared to the CSE group without inducing any adverse effect.

Based on the finding, researchers said, "The use of 10 mg CSE, twice daily, was effective in reducing pain related to moderate knee OA and can be potentially used in the management of knee pain, stiffness, and physical functions related to OA".

In order to reveal additional information about the anti-inflammatory properties of cucumber, researchers examined the antioxidant effect on cucurbitacins (Cub), a major compound found in the fruit.

Compared to grape-seed extract, wheat, alfalfa, and ginkgo biloba extracts, CuB showed a broad spectrum radical-scavenging capacity.

CuB exerted a similar activity to that of the aforementioned study by inhibiting the expression of TNF in macrophages and lymphocytes and the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators such as nitric-oxide synthase-2 and cyclooxygenase-2.

Collectively, Dr. Adebowale Bernard Saba, the lead scientist wrote," It is general knowledge among researchers working with natural medicinal products that any of the cucurbitacins have the attributes or the potential to become fully patented as anti-inflammatory...drug".

Taken altogether, cucumber processed abundantly amount of CuB may be used for the treatment of osteoarthritis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of CuB in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Coffee and Coffee Caffeine in Reduced Risk of Cancers But Esophageal Cancer

Intake of coffee regularly may have a profound effect in reduced risk of cancers, a recent study proposed.

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by irregular cell growth in any tissue and organ in the body.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

According to the joint study lead by the Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, consumption of healthy foods, particularly coffee with rich in polyphenols might have a substantial influence in reduced prevalence of cancer incidence.

Coffee extract with high chlorogenic acids (CGAs) exhibited the beneficial biological effects in ameliorated risk of cancer through anti-inflammatory activity and anti-carcinogenic activity.

In Ras-dependent breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231, CGAs also displayed a molecular basis of the activity and chemoprotective in induction of cell apoptosis.

Furthermore, in the review of literature in expression of the association between total, caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee consumption and melanoma risk in a dose-response meta-analysis on prospective cohort studies through searching the data base of PubMed and Embase, researchers indicated, seven studies eligible for meta-analysis, comprised 1,418,779 participants and 9211 melanoma cases. caffeine attenuated melanoma risk with a linear dose-response association between total coffee consumption.

Prevalence risk of melanoma reduced by 3% for additional cup of coffee intake per day.Dr. Micek A, the lead author said, "coffee intake may be inversely associated with incidence of melanoma".

In further demonstrated coffee and coffee caffeine in ameliorated risk of cancer, the Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HR) for coffee consumption associated with death from all cancers combined and from specific cancer types among 922,896 Cancer with 1982 as a base line, researchers at joint study lead by the American Cancer Society found that only smokers showed a a non-linear association between coffee consumption and all-cancer death but not in never smokers.
Among non-smokers,drinking 2 cup/day or more showed a significantly inverse associated with death from colorectal, head and neck and female breast cancers, but positively associated with esophageal cancer death .

Taking altogether, coffee and coffee caffeine have a profound effects in reduced risk of many types of cancer, excepted esophageal cancer which may be attributed to long term themo effect of hot beverage intake.

Phytochemical 3,3'-Diindolylmethane Suppresses Oxidative Stress in the Initiation of Chronic Illness

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress with no side effects, according to studies.

Oxidative stress in a condition caused either by overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

In other words, the condition of oxidative stress occurs only under imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants.

Antioxidants can be either produced by the body or injected to the body from the outside sources such as consumptions of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables.

Free radicals are everywhere, including the air we breathe, the food we eat and the body daily functioning such as cell metabolism.

In other words, any chemical compound which has an oxygen molecule can become free radical after entering our body.

Most healthy individuals can produce enough amounts of antioxidant endogenously to counter the bombards of free radicals. However, for people with a weakened immune system such as elderly and immature immune system such as baby may need the injection of antioxidants from the outside sources.

More precisely, people with a weakened immune system do not produce enough antioxidant enzymes to inhibit the chain reaction of free radicals which occurs daily in the body due to the unstable nature of the molecules.
Believe it or not, our body needs limit levels of some free radicals to function better, including lower blood pressure, relax blood vessels to move blood, such as nitric oxide NO.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.

With an aim to find the natural ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers investigated the effect of indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and its metabolite, 3, 3'- diindolylmethane (DIM) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
The study included selected genetically modified mouse (C57BL/6J mice) similar to that of metabolic abnormalities of the human disease after the administration of a high-fat diet (HFD).

Including indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and its metabolite, 3, 3'- diindolylmethane (DIM) into the diet showed a positively modulated the glucose, insulin, and Hb and HbA1c levels in HFD mice against the risk of diabetes complications.

Compared to the HFD group, injection of I3C and DIM protected the infected rat against the formation lipid peroxidation observed by levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH), conjugated dienes (CD).

Furthermore, levels of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were also increased, an indication of the balance of the ratio of antioxidants and free radicals.

Interestingly, I3C and DIM also improved the free radical scavengers such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and improved the reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in treated mice.

Based on the findings, researchers summarized, "From the study, it was clear that the antioxidant-scavenging action was accelerated in mice treated with DIM than the I3C treatment group which was comparable with the standard drug metformin".

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Coffee Intake in reduced Risk of Stroke, Particularly in Women

Coffee, second to green tea is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

A stroke is a medical condition characterized by interrupted blood supply, thus reducing oxygen and nutrients delivery to the brain, resulting in the death of brain cells.

Intake of coffee and coffee caffeine may have a profound effect in reduced risk of stroke incidence, a renowned institute study suggested.

In a third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-1994; NHANES III) data to examine coffee consumption and stroke with participants aged ≥17 years old, researchers found that
coffee intake of this population showed a significant inverse association to stroke risk incidence, regardless of smoking status.

Interestingly, the study also discovered that frequent coffee drinkers displayed a less occurrence of heart failure, diabetes, and hypertension but the risk of high cholesterol for those consuming ≥3 cups per day.

Dr. Liebeskind DS, the lead author said, "Heavier daily coffee consumption is associated with decreased stroke prevalence" and ". Multivariate analyses revealed an independent effect of heavier coffee consumption (≥3 cups/day) on reduced stroke".

Furthermore, in an analyzed data from a prospective cohort of 83,076 women in the Nurses' Health Study without history of stroke, coronary heart disease, diabetes, or cancer at baseline, with coffee consumption assessed first in 1980, then repeatedly every 2 to 4 years, and follow-up through 2004, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health filed the following results

1. The relative risk ratio of stroke in participants coffee consumption (<1 cup per month, 1 per month to 4 per week, 5 to 7 per week, 2 to 3 per day, and >or=4 per day) were 1, 0.98, 0.88, 0.81, and 0.80 repetitively.
2. Intake of coffee and coffee caffeine daily and regularly showed a significantly positive effect in reduced stroke risk after taking in to count of other favors, including high blood pressure, hypercholesterolemia, and type 2 diabetes.
3. Risk of stroke also associated stronger correlation among never and past smokers (RR for >or=4 cups a day versus <1 cup a month, 0.57) than among current smokers (RR for >or=4 cups a day versus <1 cup a month, 0.97).
4. Decaffeinated coffee intake also was associated with a trend in a lower risk of stroke after adjustment for caffeinated coffee consumption.

5. Caffeine consumption of other beverage does not associate to risk or reduced risk of stroke.
The findings suggested that long-term coffee consumption was not associated with risk of stroke but modestly reduce the risk of stroke.

Promisingly, an Asian study of data obtained from the Health Examinees (HEXA) Study, involved 146,830 individuals aged 40-69 years demonstrated that high coffee consumption was associated with a 38% lower odds ratio for stroke in women in compared to (none drinkers vs. ≥ 3 cups/day drinkers in women but not in men.

The expression of coffee intake in reduced risk of stroke also found greater in women who are healthy, younger, non-obese, non-hypertensive, non-diabetic, non-smokers, and non-alcohol drinkers.

Taking together, there is no doubt that the intake of coffee daily and regularly has a remarkable effect in reduced risk of stroke, particularly in women.

Bromelain Promotes and Removes Eschar In Burn Wounds, Human Trials Show

Eschar is a dry, dark scab of dead skin associated with a certain skin condition.

Most cases of eschar are associated with burning or cauterizing that stop bleeding, or prevent the spread of infection.

Most common causes of eschar are burned, a condition that causes severe skin damage. Burn wound can recover without serious health consequences in a few days or weeks depending on the size of the burns.

Burns depending on the severity can be classified into
* First-degree burns affect only the epidermis or outer layer of the skin accompanied by the symptoms of is red, painful, dry, and with no blisters on the affected site.

* Second-degree burns affect the epidermis and part of the dermis layer of the skin accompanied by the symptoms of red, blistered, and swollen and painful on the affected site.

* Third-degree burns not only to destroy the epidermis and dermis but also damage the underlying bones, muscles, and tendons accompanied by no symptoms due to completely damage of the nerves in the area.

Believe it or not, 10 percent burns of a child's body and 15 to 20 percent burns of an adult's body are considered to be major injuries and require medical attention and hospitalization.

Most common types of burns are* Thermal burns caused by external heat sources.
* Radiation burns caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun or radiotherapy.

* Chemical burns caused by acids, alkalies, detergents, or solvents.

* Electrical burns caused by electrical current.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diabetic foot burns, researchers examined the effect of bromelain-based enzymatic debridement with Nexobrid® (Mediwound) on surgical tangential excision of deep dermal and full thickness burns.

According to the retrospective case series that identified four patients with diabetic foot burns,
Nexobrid® debridement showed significant activity in the development of further eschar and deepening of their wounds a few days after NexoBrid was applied.

In other words, Nexobrid® debridement protects the skin against the formation of dry, dark scab or falling away of dead skin due to surgical tangential excision of deep dermal and full thickness burns.

Based on the finding, Dr. Berner JE, the lead scientist said, "We would recommend judicious use of this new product in patients with diabetic foot wounds".

Moreover, the joint study led by the University of Heidelberg based on the mutual experience of applying enzymatic debridement in more than 500 adult and pediatric patients by the consensus panelists suggested that the degree of consensus was remarkably high, with a unanimous consensus in 88.2% of statements, and the lowest degree of consensus of 70% in only 3 statements.

More precisely, most patients support the use of Nexobrid® debridement for the treatment of removed eschar in burn wounds and reduced blood loss.

After taking other factors into account, Dr. Hirche C, the lead researcher wrote, "This consensus document may serve as a preliminary guideline for the use of enzymatic debridement with user-oriented recommendations until further evidence and systematic guidelines are available".

Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of eschar in burn wounds, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Coffee Caffeine Protected Skin Aging by Increased Skin Blood Flow in Certain Areas in The Body

Epidemiological studies do not agreed that intake of coffee caffeine have a particular effect in skin blood flow, a joint respectable institutes study suggested.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In the review of coffee caffeine effect in skin blood flow, researchers at the study lead by the Linköping University postulated that intake of caffeinated coffee exhibit a stronger expression in increased skin microvascular response to transdermal iontophoresis of acetylcholine (ACh)( non‐invasively introduce vasoactive drugs in regulating the neurotransmitter at neuromuscular junctions), in compared to decaffeinated coffee intake group.

The study also found that coffee caffeine after intake displayed a significant effect in microvascular responses in the forearm skin and decreased blood flow in the finger tips, during the first hour after of drinking;

These result suggested that caffeine in coffee showed a enormous activity in increased blood flow in certain areas of the body's skin and decrease in others.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study performed in 27 healthy volunteers with oral intake of a cup either caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee and reactive hyperemia of finger blood flow assessed by laser Doppler flowmetry, within an interval of more than 2 days, the same experimental protocol was repeated with another coffee in a crossover manner, researchers showed that caffeinated coffee intake group demonstrated a slightly decreased finger blood flow in compared to decaffeinated coffee intake group.

According to the index of post-occlusive reactive hyperemia, microvascular endothelial function, in compared with decaffeinated coffee intake, caffeine contained showed a important effect in enhanced microvascular function in healthy individuals.

Taking together, the findings suggested that intake of coffee caffeine exerted a significant effect in promoted skin blood flow through microvascular function which may have strong impact in reduced skin ageing in some parts of the body.

Healthy Food Onion Inhibits the Initiation and Progression of Gastrointestinal Tract Cancer

Digestive cancer is a group of medical conditions associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue on the gastrointestinal tract.

Most cases of gastrointestinal cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining in a specific organ, before penetrating into deeper layers to form a solid tumor through proliferation.

Most common cancers of the gastrointestinal tract are
*Esophagus
The esophagus or gullet is the tube that leads foods from the pharynx to the stomach.

Esophageal cancer is caused by abnormal cell growth in the cells that line the upper part of the esophagus or glandular cells in the lower part of the esophagus that connected with the stomach.

Esophageal cancer starts from the lining of the esophagus, then later penetrate in the wall of the esophagus and spread to the lymph node around the bottom of the esophagus, stomach and the chest.

* Gallbladder cancer
The gallbladder is a small organ under the liver with a function that aids the digestive system in fat metabolism with storing bile produced by the liver.

Gallbladder cancer arises from the cells of the tissue of the gallbladder. It is common cancer in central and South America, central and eastern Europe, Japan and northern India, but rare in North America.

*Liver cancer

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above the stomach.

Liver cancer is a condition caused by the uncontrolled growth of hepatocellular cells in the liver. Since the organ is a soft tissue with less nerve, most cases of liver cancer are diagnosed in the later stage of cancer.

According to the statistic, liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.

*Pancreas cancer is an oblong flattened gland in the digestive and endocrine system located in the abdomen.

By secreting pancreatic juice to the small intestine, pancreas helps to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.

Cancer of pancreas or pancreatic cancer is a chronic condition associated with irregular cell growth in the ducts (an exocrine component of the pancreas) that carry pancreatic juices with cancer of an epithelium that originates in glandular tissue which accounts for over 75 - 90% of all cases of exocrine cancers.

*Stomach cancer
Stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and an important organ of the digestive tract.

Stomach cancer is a condition characterized by abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.

* Bowel cancer
Human Bowl is divided into 2 parts, the small bowel, is associated with the digestion and absorption of food. large bowel including the colon and rectum that involve absorption of water from the small bowel contents and break down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Bowel cancer is a condition caused by the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon, rectum, or vermiform appendix.

Bowel cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing in a predictable way.

Bowel cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the US and Canada.

Besides some of the symptoms associated with specific types of cancer, most gastrointestinal cancers shared the general symptoms of unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of cancer in the digestive system, researchers examined the relationship between total allium, garlic, and onion intake on the risk of cancer of the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT).

According to the results of data of published observational studies (21 case-control and four cohort studies), using a meta-analytic approach and random effects models, onion exerted the relative risk of 0.72 compared to 0.79 for total allium, 0.74 for garlic for the highest versus the lowest consumption.

Total allium including onion consumption showed an inverse relation apparently stronger in case-control studies.

These results suggested that onion has a moderate inverse association with the risk of squamous cell carcinoma of the UADT.

Additionally, according to the University Laboratories of Medical Research (LURM) in the examination of the effects of dietary components on cancer of the digestive system, onion contains active components that can influence the initiation and progression of cancer.

Furthermore, these chemical compounds have also been found to inhibit cell proliferation and metastasis, induce apoptosis.

More precisely, onion protected the integrity and viability of the cells in the digestive system through it's antioxidant, cytotoxic, and pro-apoptotic properties.

Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer of the digestive system, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Betacyanins Protects the Liver Against Injury in Vivo

The liver is the largest internal organ not only plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body but also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical condition characterized by reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver injury.

Most common symptoms of liver injury are totally depending on the severity of the injury that affects the liver function. In serious cases of liver injury, symptoms may include jaundice, pain in your upper right abdomen, abdominal swelling, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, disorientation or confusion and sleepiness.

Most common causes of liver injury include
* Overdose of certain medication, especially acetaminophen overdose. Believer, it or not, taking too much acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) is the most common cause of acute liver failure in the US.

* Overdose of some prescription medications, including antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and anticonvulsants is also associated with liver injury.

* Overdose of herbal extracts such as green tea ECG

* Toxins
Exposure to toxic chemicals such as refrigerants and solvents for waxes and eating toxic food such as wild mushroom may cause liver injury.

Out of many risk factors involved in liver injury, some researchers suggested alcohol intoxication, a condition of alcohol poisoning caused by excessively high levels of the recent drinking of ethanol in the blood (alcohol) may be one of the major culprits that cause the long-term injury to the liver.

Over time, excessive alcohol drinking can lead to fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, and chronic hepatitis with liver fibrosis or cirrhosis.

The Canadian Liver Association wrote, "When the liver has too much alcohol to handle, normal liver function may be interrupted leading to a chemical imbalance. If the liver is required to detoxify alcohol continuously, liver cells may be destroyed or altered resulting in fat deposits (fatty liver), and more seriously, either inflammation (alcoholic hepatitis), and/or permanent scarring (cirrhosis).

Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the prevention of liver injury, researchers examined the protective effect of betanin, a chemical compound found in the class of betacyanins on the liver.

In fish pretreated with 1, 2, and 4 % betanin in fodder throughout the experiment for 20 days before intraperitoneally injected with 20 % (v/v in peanut oil) CCl4 at a volume of 0.5 mL/kg body weight, researchers showed that* Injection of CCl4 induced liver injury by promoting the expression of liver CYP2E1 which has been found to increased in patient with liver disease, and oxidative stress.

* Elevated serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities and liver histological damage in CCl4 fish were also decreased in the treatment group.

More precisely, compared with the CCl4 control group, the betanin-treated groups exhibited reduced CYP2E1 activity, decreased malondialdehyde level, increased liver antioxidative capacity (increased glutathione level and superoxide dismutase and catalase activities).

In other words, all parameters associated with liver injury in the CCl4 group are inhibited by the administration of betanin.

Based on the finding, researchers said, " In conclusion, betanin attenuates CCl4-induced liver damage in common carp. Moreover, the inhibition of CYP2E1 activity and oxidative stress may have significant roles in the protective effect of betanin".

Taken altogether, betacyanins processed abundantly bioactive compound betanin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver injury, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Coffee and Coffee Caffeine, the Potential Mediator of Sex Hormones

Sex hormones are a class of hormones, affecting sexual development or reproduction. Steroid-binding globulin(SSBG), is a sex hormone, having a direct effect on androgen and estrogen.

A recent study suggested that coffee may have a direct effect in influence the production of the sex hormone estrogen and testosterone depending to gender difference.

In an 8-week parallel-arm randomized controlled trial with Healthy adults (n = 42) recruited from the Boston community, including regular coffee consumers, nonsmokers, and overweight, randomized to five 6-ounce cups of caffeinated or decaffeinated instant coffee or water per day, at 4 weeks, researchers surprisingly found that
1. Decaffeinated coffee drinking was associated with a borderline significantly increased levels of SHBG in women, but not in men.
2. At week 4, decaffeinated coffee decreased total and free testosterone and caffeinated coffee decreased only total testosterone in women.
3. Contrasted to women participants, men consumption of caffeinated coffee displayed a significantly increased total testosterone and decreased total and free estradiol hormones.
4. The study also indicated that caffeinated coffee consumption do not exert any effect on SHBG in either men or women.

But conflicted to the healthy young adult, coffee and coffee caffeine showed an elevated effect as a mediator of sex hormone-binding globulin in both androgen and estrogen in type 2 diabetic patients, particularly in women.

Additionally, according to the cross-sectional study of 2377 nondiabetic pre- and postmenopausal women from the E3N cohort study in a multivariate-adjusted model, intake of more than 3 cups of coffee daily coffee and caffeine ≥265 mg/day were associated with an increased SHBG level distribution (<46.3 nmol/L), in compared to no risk association of decaffeinated coffee subgroup.

Furthermore, the prevention of low level of SHBG of both caffeinated coffee and caffeine may demonstrate a potential and positive effect in reduced risk of T2DM..

More importantly, in the examine a study during a median follow-up of 10 years of 359 postmenopausal women with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes matched with 359 control subjects by age, race, duration of follow-up, and time of blood draw, coffee and caffeine were associated to increased levels of fee and total testosterone among postmenopausal women.

The finding evidence suggested that coffee and caffeine have an extreme effect in an exhibition of sex hormone estrogen and testosterone through the lower level of SHBG in menopause women and prevented the onset of type 2 diabetes.
Decaffeinated coffee decreased total and free testosterone through significantly increased levels of SHBG in women. And caffeinated coffee displayed a significantly increased total testosterone and decreased total and free estradiol in men.

Herbal Turmeric Protects the Liver Cells Against Alcoholic Toxicity, According to Studies

The liver plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical condition characterized by the reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver disease.

Alcohol intoxication is a condition of alcohol poisoning caused by excessively high levels of the recent drinking of ethanol in the blood (alcohol). Most common symptoms are mild sedation and poor coordination. At higher doses, overexpression of ethanol may cause slurred speech, trouble walking and vomiting.

Alcoholic liver toxicity is a condition of alcohol overconsumption that causes the reduce function of the liver. However, long-term excessive alcohol drinking has been found to
induce fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, and chronic hepatitis with liver fibrosis or cirrhosis.

Believe it or not, the liver detoxifies over 80% of alcohol after entering the body.

Most common symptoms of liver alcoholic toxicity are a fluid buildup of the legs (edema) and in the abdomen (ascites), jaundice, redness on the palms of the hands and easy bruising and abnormal bleeding.

In men, liver alcoholic toxicity may lead to impotence, shrinking of the testicles, and breast swelling.

Conventionally, treatment of long-term liver damage caused by alcoholic toxicity is focusing on lifestyle changes by limiting to no more than one drink a day for women and no more than two drinks a day for men.

In severe cases, medication and surgery may be necessary depending on the severity of the liver damage.

In acute alcohol-induced liver injury, Dr. Veronica L. Massey, the lead scientist wrote, "Alcohol consumption is customary in most cultures and alcohol abuse is common worldwide. For example, more than 50% of Americans consume alcohol, with an estimated 23.1% of Americans participating in heavy and/or binge drinking at least once a month".

And, "It is now clear that acute alcohol binges not only can be acutely toxic to the liver but also can contribute to the chronicity of ALD. Potential mechanisms by which acute alcohol causes damage include steatosis, dysregulated immunity and inflammation, and altered gut permeability".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of alcohol toxicity, researchers examined whether curcumin protects against oxidative stress in liver and brain in mice fed excessive alcohol.

The study included BALB/c mice induced alcoholic toxicity by administrating 20% alcohol (16 g/kg body weight) with or without curcumin (0.016% in diet) for 12 weeks.

According to the tested assays, the concentrations of phosphatidylcholine hydroperoxide (PC-OOH) in liver and brain of mice treated with ethanol and curcumin were significantly lower compared to mice treated with only ethanol.

However, observation of alcoholic influence on the brain showed no significant difference of PC-OOH level among all mice.

In other words, curcumin only has anti-alcoholic liver toxicity property.

More precisely, alcoholic overdose can only induce lipid peroxide level of liver but not of the brain.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "...daily curcumin consumption might be protective for the liver against alcohol-related oxidative stress in mice.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of liver alcohol toxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bromelain, a Natural Treatment of Pelvic Pain with No Side Effects

The pelvic girdle or hip girdle is formed by a single bone which serves as the attachment point for each lower limb.

Pelvic pain is a pain in the lowest part of the abdomen and pelvis.

In women, pelvic pain in most cases is associated with the symptoms arising from the reproductive, urinary or digestive systems.

In women, the most common causes of pelvic pain are

* Adenomyosis is a condition associated with menstrual cramp caused by the inner lining of the uterus that breaks through the muscle wall of the uterus. Adenomyosis has a negative influence on the quality of life of patients.

* Endometriosis is a medical condition characterized by the growth of endometrial cells somewhere else instead of the inside of the uterus. Endometriosis also reacts to the women menstrual cycle, leading to severe menstrual pain with maturation with no way to escape.

* Premenstrual syndrome is a faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, affecting over 70% to 90% of women in the US. The syndrome also interferes women's physical and emotional states, and daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation that occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts.

* Mittelschmerz is one-sided, lower abdominal pain associated with ovulation occurred in the midway through a menstrual cycle, about 14 days before the next menstrual period.

Conventionally, treatment of pelvic pain is to relieve pain with over-the-counter pain medicine, such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or acetaminophen (Tylenol, others).

If you are a long-term user of pain relievers, please make sure you know all the side effect for preventive measure.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of pelvic pain, researchers evaluated the efficacy of bromelain affected by chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS).

The study included patients diagnosed with CP/CPPS between January and December 2015 were randomly assigned to receive oral capsules of pollen extract and vitamins (group A) or bromelain (group B) for 3 months.

According to the returned of completed questionnaires from the 65 male patients, 8 of the 33 patients in the bromelain group showed a significant reduction in the NIH-CPSI total score compared to b24 of the 32 patients in group A.

In other words, pollen extract and vitamins (group A) treated group exerted a better outcome after 3 months of treatment.

Furthermore, levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines were significantly lower in group A compared to group B.

In the follow-up visit, group A showed a statistically significant reduction in the levels of IL-8 compared to the enrolment levels, compared to group B.

These results suggested that the efficacy of both pollen extract and vitamins (group A) and bromelain (group B) relief the pelvic pain through their anti-inflammatory activities, particularly in IL-8.

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of pelvic pain, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Kitchen Spice Turmeric, a Natural Prevention and Treatment of Liver Cancer

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above your stomach.

The liver not only plays a critical role to filter the blood coming from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body but also protects our body against toxin by detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Futhermore, the liver produces bile that not only aid the digestive function in food absorption but also builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormone.

Additionally, the liver also inhibits oxidative stress by producing the antioxidant enzyme that counters the expression of free radicals in the body

Liver cancer is a medical condition characterized by out of controlled growth of hepatocellular cells in the liver. Most cases of liver cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the liver tissue, before penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor.

At the advanced stage, primary liver cancer can also travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organ, leading to secondary metastasis.

Since the liver is an organ with soft tissue with less nerve, most liver cancer patients are diagnosed in the later stage of cancer.

According to the statistic, liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide. In the US, approximately 42,030 new cases including 29,480 in men and 12,550 in women will be diagnosed with liver cancer. The liver cancer also will cause of 31,780 American, including 21,600 men and 10,180 women in 2019.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.

Most common symptoms of liver cancer are abdominal pain, tenderness, easy bruising or bleeding, enlarged abdomen, jaundice, severe pain, particularly in the later stage and drowsiness and confusion accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding potential and natural compound for the treatment of liver cancer, researchers investigated curcumenol and laminarin, the bioactive compounds found in turmeric and kelp respectively.
In vitro, according to the tested assays, the combination of curcumenol and laminarin inhibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion in human hepatoma HepG2 cells.

Furthermore, the combination of curcumenol and laminarin also has a strong effect on the inhibition of HepG2 cell proliferation and metastasis.

In other words, the efficacy of the combination was attributed to the inhibition of the expression of the levels of cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS, an endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) synthetase) level associated with cancer initiation and progression

Where the increased expression of cystathionine beta-synthase has been found in cancer cells of various tissue types.

Moreover, the combined production also blocked the angiogenesis of liver cancer cell by positively regulating the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).

Based on the finding, researchers wrote, " the combination of Curcuma zedoary and kelp could inhibit the proliferation and metastasis of liver cancer cells in vivo and in vitro by inhibiting endogenous H2S production and down-regulating the pSTAT3/BCL-2 (apoptotic) and VEGF (metastatic) pathway".

Additionally, in the examined secondary liver cancer caused by primary gastric cancer (PGC) metastasis, researchers found that injection of curcumin, an active ingredient from the rhizome of the plant Curcuma longa reduces the incidence of metastatic tumor formation in the liver in vivo.

In mice induced primary gastric cancer treated with curcumin treatment, the circulating tumor cells (CTCs) significantly reduced the formation of liver tumor.

More precisely, curcumin also blocked the expression of CXCR4 in primary tumor cells associated with the cancer cells survival, metastasis, and recurrence.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of primary and secondary liver cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Carotenoids Ameliorates the Risk of /Stomach Cancer

The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and an important organ of the digestive tract.

The stomach plays a critical role to assist the digestive system in digesting foods by secreting acid and enzymes.
Gastric/Stomach cancer is a medical condition characterized by abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of gastric/stomach cancer.

According to the statistics, most cases of gastric/stomach cancer are found in older people. The average age of people when they are diagnosed is 68. The risk of developing gastric/stomach cancer in a man lifetime is about 1 in 95.

The exact causes of gastric/stomach cancer are unidentified. However, researchers do no certain risk factors are associated with an increased risk of the disease, including
* Age
Most cases of gastric/stomach cancer are found in adult at their fifty.

*Diet
Exposure to certain chemical carcinogens in the foods of the first 20 years of life or over a prolonged period of time may increase the risk of gastric/stomach cancer.

* Bacteria
Researchers found that people with gastric/stomach cancer also contains bacteria Helicobacter pylori in their stomach.

* Hydrochloric acid production
People with the low amount or no of hydrochloric acid produced by the stomach are at risk to develop gastric/stomach cancer

* Long-term inflammation of the stomach
People who have conditions associated with long-term stomach inflammation are at slightly increased risk of gastric/stomach cancer.

* Family history
The risk of gastric/stomach increases if one of the members of your direct family has it.

* Smoking is associated with gastric/stomach due to cigarette carcinogens.

* Obesity
Researchers found that overweight and obesity are associated with an increased risk of gastric/ stomach cancer. The strength of the association also increases with increasing BMI.

However, most people with some of the aforementioned risk factors have never developed gastric. stomach cancer.

Carotenoids is a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomato, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.

On finding a natural pigment for the prevention and treatment of gastric/stomach cancer, researchers examined the effects of carotenoids, the fat-soluble pigments found abundantly in fruits and vegetables including total dietary carotenoids, dietary carotenoid subclasses (α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lutein/zeaxanthin, and lycopene), and foods contributing to the dietary intake of each carotenoid on the risk of GC.

According to the results of case-control study of 415 cases and 830 controls recruited from the National Cancer Center Hospital in Korea between March 2011 and December 2014,
* Intake of carotenoids exerted a significant inverse association with GC risk among women, with the relative odds ratio (OR) of 0.56.

* A higher intake of dietary lycopene was inversely associated with GC risk overall in the subjects with OR 0.60. In men, the OR was 0.60 compared to women with OR of 0.54.

* In the subgroups of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-positive subjects, dietary lycopene intake demonstration a strong impact on GC risk was also observed in the subgroups of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-positive subjects and ever smokers.

Compared foods containing a high amount of carotenoids and lycopene, consumption of tomatoes and tomato ketchup was inversely associated with GC risk in the overall subjects, men, and women.

Based on the findings. researchers wrote, "Based on our findings, a higher intake of dietary lycopene and contributing foods of lycopene (tomatoes and tomato ketchup) may be inversely associated with the risk of GC".

Taken altogether, carotenoids containing a high amount of compound lycopene may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Onion, A Natural Prevention and Treatment of Insulin Resistance

Insulin Resistance is a hallmark of diabetes characterized by the inability of the body to use the insulin produced by the pancreas properly.

In other words, signals sent out by the hormone insulin was ignored by the cell of the muscles, body fat, and liver that process the function to convert glucose into energy.

Epidemiologically, people with insulin resistance are associated with an increased risk of prediabetes, type 2 diabetes and chronic conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, and cancer.

Most cases of insulin resistance in the Western world are involved in the clogged up insulin receptors.
As the signals of hormone insulin are blocked, insulin resistance develops, leading to more production of insulin by the body.

Over time insulin resistance that leads to damage of the beta cell in the pancreas, an early condition of prediabetes and types 2 diabetes.

According to the US statistics, approximately, 60 to 70 million individuals are affected by insulin resistance with 40% of individuals older than 50 years may be at risk for insulin resistance.

Most common risk factors associated with insulin resistance are obesity and hypertension. However, some researchers suggested that the rise of insulin resistance in the US may be correlated to the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Merat S, the lead scientist wrote, " Contrary to expectation, IR was induced in mice fed the Western diet,,,. The Western diet group had higher average glucose levels (187+/-16 versus 159+/-12 mg/dL) and 4.5-fold higher plasma insulin levels".

With an aim to find a potential and natural compound for the prevention and treatment insulin resistance, researchers examined the effects of red onions and low doses of the flavonoid, quercetin, increase insulin sensitivity and improve glucose tolerance on an animal model.

The study included a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity and insulin resistance in C57BL/6J mice that randomly assigned to into groups, fed either a low-fat diet (LF), HFD (HF), HFD + quercetin (HF + Q), or HFD + RO (HF + RO) for 9 weeks.

According to the tested assays, quercetin and RO supplementation decreased HFD-induced fat mass accumulation and insulin resistance (measured by insulin tolerance test) and increased energy expenditure.

Comapred to RO group, HF + Q showed an increase in physical activity levels.

Furthermore, quercetin and RO similarly increased skeletal muscle mitochondrial numbers associated with insulin sensitivity and decreased beta-oxidation, a metabolic process involving multiple steps by which fatty acid molecules are broken down to produce energy.

In other words, quercetin- and RO-induced improvements in insulin resistance, and energy expenditure through differential mechanisms as mentioned above.

In the countering doxorubicin-induced insulin resistance in breast cancer treatment,
researchers investigated the onion effect on 56 eligible BC patients (aged 30-63 years), diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma.

The intervention of a parallel-design, randomized, triple-blind, controlled clinical trial included subjects assigned in a stratified-random allocation to receive body mass index-dependent 100 to 160 g/d of onion as high onion group (HO; n = 28) or 30 to 40 g/d small onions in low onion group (LO; n = 28) for 8 weeks intervention, following their second cycle of chemotherapy.

In 23 cases complete the study in both groups
* The daily use of HO demonstrated a significant decrease in serum fasting blood glucose and insulin levels compared to LO, over the period of study.

* Posttreatment with HO showed a significant decrease in homeostasis model of assessment-insulin resistance relative to changes in the LO group.

* Compared to the pre- and postdose treatments, HO improved quantitative insulin sensitivity and controls on C-peptide in a dose-dependent manner.

Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of insulin resistance, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Betacyanins Protects the Cell Integrity Against Cancers

Cancer is a class of disease characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the tissues and organs.

Most common cancers are
* Breast cancer, accounting for 25.4% of the total number of new cases diagnosed in 2018.

Breast cancer starts in the tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk. there are also rare cases that breast cancer starts in other areas of the breast. The risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of women is 1/8.

Luckily, the 5 years survival rate of localized breast cancer is about 100%.
* Colorectal cancer and lung cancers are the second and third most common cancers, accounting to 43.9% of all cancers, excluding non-melanoma skin cancer.
Colorectal cancer is cancer in the colon, rectum, or vermiform appendix. Colorectal cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing cancer.

The 5-year survival rate of the localized stage of colorectal cancer is about 90%.

Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. Most common form of primary lung cancers is derived from epithelial cells.

Lung cancer can also be classified into
* Non-small cell lung cancer
Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer. It usually grows and spreads methodically and predictably.

* Small cell lung cancer
Small cell lung cancer is a fast-growing type of lung cancer, it can spread to distant parts of the body in a relatively early stage.

The overall 5-year survival rate of lung cancer is about 60%.

Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

In the finding, the health benefits of Betacyanins, researchers compared the effect of green beet (Beta vulgaris var. cicla L.) and red beetroot (B. vulgaris var. Rubra L.) phytochemicals that benefit the human health.

According to the chemical analysis, green beet contains apigenin, vitexin, vitexin-2-O-xyloside, and vitexin-2-O-rhamnoside, compared to the red beetroot as a source of betaxanthins and betacyanins.

All phytochemicals found in green and red beet show a considerable antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiproliferative activities.

In cancer perspective, vitexin-2-O-xyloside combined with betaxanthins and betacyanins, exerts a significant antiproliferative activity in breast, liver, colon, and bladder cancer cell lines, through the induction of cancer cells apoptosis.

Additionally, betacyanins and other phytochemicals found in the green and red beet inhibited the pro-survival and anti-apoptotic genes, modulated proteins associated with angiogenesis.

Moreover, betaxanthins and betacyanins used in combination with conventional anticancer drugs were found to reduce the chemo drug toxicity and overcome the multidrug resistance of cancer cells.

Based on the finding, researchers concluded betacyanins ma be yused alone or combined with other phytochemicals or chemo drug to block the onset of the proliferation of tumor cells.

Taken altogether, betacyanins may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
