How to Maintain A Healthy Skin, Naturally and Permanently

Tomatoes may have a profound and positive effect in improved skin health, some scientists suggested.

The results of analysis were carried out by several universities and research companies, including IUF - Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine and published on numbers of online literature.

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongings to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, tomato is grown world wide for commercial purpose
and often in green house.

In the aim to reaffirm tomatoes effect in reduced negative impact against ultraviolet (UV)A/B and UVA1 radiation at a molecular level, scientists at the IUF - Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine launched a study of the tomato bioactive compounds lutein and lycopene photoprotective effect on human skin health.

The purpose of the study was to assess the two active treatments containing either lycopene (TNC) or lutein to test for their capacity in decreased expression of UVA1 the radiation-inducible genes HO1, ICAM1 and MMP1

Gene heme oxygenase 1 (HO1) is an enzyme with function to to protect cells from oxidative damage, in this case it was the UVA1

Gene intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM1) also known as CD54 (Cluster of Differentiation 54) is a protein with function in adhesion phenomena involved in the immune response.

Matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) also known as interstitial collagenase and fibroblast collagenase is an enzyme with function to break down collagens located in the ECM.

The placebo-controlled, double-blinded, randomized, crossover study included 65 healthy volunteers allocated to four treatment groups and subjected to a 2-week washout phase, followed by two 12-week treatment phases separated by another 2 weeks of washout.

Volunteers started either with active treatment and were then switched to placebo, or vice versa.

24 hours after the irradiation phase skin, biopsies were taken from untreated, UVA/B- and UVA1-irradiated skin for subsequent reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction analysis of gene expression.

Interestingly, after taking into account of other co and con founders, researchers found that lycopene isolated from tomato exerts a strong activities in completely inhibited UVA1- and UVA/B-induced upregulation of heme-oxygenase 1, intercellular adhesion molecule 1 and matrix metallopeptidase 1, through restrict the transformation of mRNA in initiated cell changes.

Blood samples taken from lycopene treatment group, showed a clinically relative protective effect of skin cells through its inhibition of levels of oxidative stress induced by UVA1- and UVA/B exposure in compared to other groups.

In compared to lycopene active group, group treated with lutein injection provided complete protection taken in the first period but showed insignificantly effects in the second sequence.

These results suggested that there must be some unknown mechanisms to cause the reduced levels of
lutein in the second sequence in compared to TNC.

Dr. Grether-Beck S, the lead author said, " the role of these genes as indicators of oxidative stress, photodermatoses and photoageing" and " these results might indicate that TNC and lutein could protect against solar radiation-induced health damage".

Furthermore, in re evalueat the effect of Carotenoids in skin photoprotection against UV radiation through analysis of the collection of dermal biopsies of healthy humans (N=27) and blood samples, researchers reconfirmed that lycopene and beta-carotene made up the majority of carotenoids in both skin and plasma followed by beta-cryptoxanthin.

These expressions suggested that lycopene and beta-carotene may play important role in improved skin health through its antioxidant activity in compared to other members of carotenoids such as
dihydroxycarotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin.

In other words, skin of human is relatively enriched in lycopene and beta-carotene, compared to lutein and zeaxanthin, possibly reflecting a specific function of hydrocarbon carotenoids in human skin photoprotection.

Additionally, in the examine the skin collected from 74 men and women with diverse skin pigmentation using the Resonance Raman spectroscopy (RRS) to measure of the palm, inner arm, and outer arm were obtained at baseline, 1 wk, 2 wk, 1 mo, 3 mo, and 6 mo (to maximize seasonal variation), researchers with no surprise found that total carotenoids across time are 0.97 (palm), 0.95 (inner arm), and 0.93 (outer arm).

Similarly, assessment of lycopene by RRS was significantly correlated with lycopene assessed by HPLC of dermal biopsies (r = 0.74, P < 0.0001).

These finding once again indicated the protective effect of tomato and bioactive ingredient lycopene in skin health in compared to other compounds.

Taken together, there is no doubt that tomato with its major bioactive phytochemical may be considered as functional food in improved skin health against skin damage caused by numbers of negative implications including oxidative stress, photodermatoses and photoageing

How to Prevent Onset of Inflammatory Related Diseases Naturally

Carrots may have a profound and positive effect in reduced risk, progression and treatment of inflammatory related diseases, some scientists suggested.

The results of the studies were conducted by numbers of best institutes including National Institute of Nutrition, Jamai Osmania and published on online medical literature.

Inflammation is a natural response of immune system to protect our body against foreign in induction of infection to the site of injure or damage.

However, over expression of proinflammatory cytokines is also associated to induce local cells death and formation of local scars.

Carrot, a root vegetable with orange color is a sub spices of Daucus carota, belongings to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.

In the investigation the function of adipose tissue in induction of various metabolic diseases including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) involved initiation of inflammatory development, researchers at the National Institute of Nutrition, Jamai Osmania launched an study to examine the effect of carrot intake and inflammatory status in male weanling Wistar rats.

The tested group of rats were divided into four groups and fed either control or high fructose diet of AIN-93G composition with or without carrot juice ingestion for an 8 week period.

AIN-93G was the formulation published by the American Institute of Nutrition (AIN) committee in 1993 improving the laboratory standard, with an aim to accommodate the increased nutritional demands of rat or mouse growth.

At the end of the experiment, researcher indicated that
* Carrot juice displays insignificant effect in adiposity and cell size of visceral fat depot as well as the retroperitoneal white adipose tissue (RPWAT).

The role of white adipose tissue (WAT) is to store excess fat for future use as sources of energy.

* In high fructose diet, application carrot juice exerts a strong activity in inhibited elevation of plasma free fatty acid (FFA), macrophage chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP1) (P ≤ 0.01) and high sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) (P ≤ 0.05) levels.

Macrophages chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1/CCL2) is a chemokine with function in regulated migration and infiltration of macrophages, the mobile white blood cells.

Levels of high sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) is associated to the inflammation of blood-vessel walls.

Further analysis suggested that carrot juice decreased over expression of free cholesterol and immune response through its antioxidant in inhibited the elevation of ROS in production of pro inflammatory cytokines.

In other words, carrot juice activated production of anti inflammatory factors in reduced over expression of inflammatory cytokines in facilitated onset and progression of inflammatory related diseases, including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

More over, in the additional differentiation of the effect of root vegetables in Immune-inflammatory signaling and metabolic effects, researchers at the joint study lead by the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, conducted a study to assess the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of purple carrot and potato derived anthocyanins and the molecular mechanisms to ameliorate cellular inflammation in a mono- and co-culture cell models.

In vitro gastrointestinal model, application of bioaccessibility of 44.62 and 71.8% for anthocyanins of purple carrot and potato demonstrated a strong activity in inhibition of cellular inflammation in Caco-2 cells.

According to the assay, the effectiveness of anthocyanins injection was found to transport across a transmembrane cell model.

The inhibition of anthocyanins during the transportation also reduced expression of pro inflammatory factors of IL-8 and TNF-α secretion, and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines by blocking NF-κB, and MAPK, the pro inflammatory proteins in mediated inflammatory cellular signaling cascades.

Interleukin 8 is a chemokine produced by macrophages and other cell types in initiated production of inflammatory expression.

Tumor necrosis factor is a cell signaling protein (cytokine) involved systemic inflammation in acute phase infection of tissue injure and damage.

Dr. Zhang H, the lead scientist after taking into account of other co and con founders said, "Anthocyanins from purple carrots and potatoes possess a promising anti-inflammatory effect in model gut system" and "They (Anthocyanins) can be absorbed and act differently but are in general beneficial for inflammation-mediated diseases".

Taken together, carrot juice containing high amount of anthocyanins may be considered as functional food in prevented onset of inflammatory related diseases.

How to Improve Vascular Function Naturally and Permanently In Prevention of Heart Disease

Intake of nitrate-rich beetroot juice may have a substantial and profound effect in improved vascular function, thus reducing risk of heart disease.

Beet, best known as the beetroot or garden beet is a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall, belonging to the amaranth family.

Vascular function are bundle vascular system with function in blood circulation.

Abnormal vascular function is considered as one of the risk factor in development of heart disease.

In a total of 69 subjects recruited in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel study to examine the change in vascular function induced by intake of Nitrate-Rich Beetroot Juice, determined with the use of ultrasound flow-mediated dilatation (FMD).

The flow-mediated dilation (FMD).test, an ultrasound technique performed only by a skilled sonographer is a noninvasive assessment of vascular endothelial function through experts understanding of the physiology, analysis, and interpretation of this measurement

Intake of nitrate-rich beetroot juice displayed a significant increase in the FMD response of 1.1% in compared to placebo group of decrease of 0.3%

Nitrate-rich beetroot juice group also demonstrated a small improvement of stiffness measured by Aortic Pulse Wave Velocity and showed a trend of continuous improvement in compared to placebo.

Aortic Pulse Wave Velocity is a test to measure stiffness of the largest artery in the body, Increased stiffness will result in reduced mobility in related regions.

Result of aortic pulse wave velocity measurement is said to have an ability to identify people in their 20’s who are at increased risk for development of heart disease, stroke and dementia.

Administration of nitrate-rich beetroot juice showed a strong reduction of 7.6% of platelet-monocyte aggregates in compared to increase of 10.1% in placebo. This finding indicated that nitrate-rich beetroot juice intake had a substantial effect in decreased risk of acute myocardial infarction.

Platelet–monocyte aggregates is a novel index with platelet activation and a maker of early onset of acute myocardial infarction.

Furthermore, intake of nitrate-rich beetroot juice group expressed an exceptional improvement of vascular function in reduced P-selectin expression in activated platelet aggression

P-selectin is a cell adhesion molecule (CAM) with function in mediated the interaction of activated endothelial cells or platelets.

Additionally, application of the juice also improved the nonpathogenic, commensal bacteria present in the healthy human salivary glands measured by salivary microbiome in compared to placebo group.

Interestingly, intake of the nitrate-rich beetroot juice also responded to change of 78 bacterial taxa out of thousands harbored in human gut.

The proportions of Rothia mucilaginosa trending to increase in nitrate-rich beetroot juice group, in compared to Neisseria flavescens (P < 0.01) increased in the placebo group.

Rothia mucilaginosa, is considered part of the normal microflora of the human mouth and the upper respiratory tract.

Neisseria flavescens is an uncommon pathogen of human infection, pneumonia and empyema

There were no adverse effects of dietary nitrate were detected through out the experiment.

The finding evidences suggested that intake of nitrate-rich beetroot juice daily may have a sustainable effect in improve vascular function, thus reducing risk of heart disease.

How to Prevent Onset of Alzheimer’s disease Naturally

Coffee intake may have a positive implication in reduced risk of early onset of Alzheimer’s disease, a respectable joint study suggested.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Alzheimer’s disease is generalized and progressive neuro degenerative disease due to aging.

In a rat model for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) induced by phosphoprotein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), eicosanoyl-5-hydroxytryptamide (EHT), researchers showed that components found in coffee exhibited a protective effect against AD, through inhibited expression of the I2(PP2A), or SET protein involved multiple cellular processes in the brains.

More importantly, oral administration of the supplement for 12 months showed a strong attenuated all the defects of cognitive impairment, including tau hyperphosphorylation, and elevated levels of cytoplasmic amyloid-β protein caused by phosphoprotein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) injection.

Dr. Basurto-Islas G, the lead author in the joint study said, ” possibility that EHT may make a substantial contribution to the apparent neuroprotective benefits associated with coffee consumption as evidenced by numerous epidemiologic studies indicating that coffee drinkers have substantially lowered risk of developing AD”.

Further more, Dr. Wierzejska R in the evaluated effects of caffeine coffee in dietary factors which might prolong mental agility, said, ” moderate coffee consumption in fact has a lower the risk for common neurodegenerative conditions, i.e. Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases” and “Possibly, in the future experts will recommend drinking coffee not only to satisfy individual taste preferences but also to decrease age-related mental deterioration.”.

Others, in the concerns of the high consumption of coffee in effect of individual’s health through evaluating database of online medical literature, researchers found that coffee-drinking habits, and/or the quantity of coffee consumption, have a significantly reduced risk of dementia/AD, and other chronic diseases, but the the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood, when comparing coffee drinkers with non-drinker.

Taking together, regular drinking of caffeine coffee in a moderated amount daily may have a positive effect in attenuated risk and progression of Alzheimer’s disease and caffeine may be considered as a novel therapy for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

How to Stop Hair Loss and Improve Hair Diameter & Density Naturally

Researchers may have found ingredients for treatment of hair loss pattern.

Supplementation with specific omega 3 & 6 and antioxidants acts efficiently against hair loss, improves hair density and reduces the telogen percentage and the proportion of miniaturized anagen hair, the Laboratoires innéov study suggested

The results of the investigation were published on online literature.

Omega-3& 6 fatty acids are phytochemincals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts,…

Antioxidants are substances with function in inhibited oxidation caused by reactive oxygen species.

Many antioxidants also act as free radical scavengers, such as vitamin C, D and E.

Human have to absorb Omega 3 & 6 from other sources as they do not produce them.

In the total of 120 healthy female subjects participated in this 6-month, randomized, comparative study to evaluate the change in hair density on standardized photographs primary with. secondary endpoints to include changes in telogen hair percentage and diameter distribution of anagen hair (>40 µm vs. ≤40 µm) measured by trichogram, researchers found that intake of omega 3 & 6 and antioxidants display a significant effect in reduced hair loss and promoted hair growth.

According to the photograph assessment, the application demonstrated a superior improvement in hair density.

The telogen hair percentage was significantly (P < 0.001) reduced in the supplemented group.

The proportion of nonvellus anagen hair (>40 µm) increased compared to the control group.

Trichometer index in supplemented group expressed a substantial increment of hair growth, in compared to loss in control group.

Also, according to the doctors' final photograph assessment reported, oral administration of Omega 3 & 6 supplement reduced hair loss, improved hair diameter and hair density in most of women who were assigned to treatment group.

After aking into account of other co and con founders, Dr. Le Floc’h C, the lead scientist said, “A large majority of supplemented subjects reported a reduction in hair loss (89.9% of subjects at 6 months), as well as an improvement in hair diameter (86.1%) and hair density (87.3%)”.

Truly, the study of 6-month supplementation with omega 3&6 and antioxidants no doubt expressed a significant effect in inhibited hair loss and improved hair density and reduced telogen percentage and miniaturized proportion of anagen hair.

11 Health Benefits, 6 Interactions and 4 Adverse Effects of Green Tea Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), Scientists Say

Green tea containing highest amount of antioxidants than any drink or food with the same volume, is the leaves of Camellia sinensis, undergone minimal oxidation during processing and originated from China.

The leaves are precious drinks in traditional Chinese culture and used exceptional in socialization for more than 4000 thousand years.

Because of their health benefits, green tea is cultivated for commercial purposes all over the world.

Epigallocatechin, including catechins, is a phytochemical of Flavan-3-ols, in the group of Flavonoids (polyphenols), found abundantly in green tea, St John wort, black Tea, carob flour, Fuji apples, etc.

A. Medical Benefits
1. Anti-Breast Cancer Activities
In the testing the hypothesis that administration of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a polyphenol present in abundance in widely consumed tea, and its inhibition of cell proliferation, invasion, and angiogenesis in breast cancer, found that treatment with combination of radiotherapy and EGCG feeding for 2-8 weeks to in vitro cultures of highly-metastatic human MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells resulted in the following significant changes: (1) suppression of cell proliferation and invasion; (2) arrest of cell cycles at the G0/G1 phase; (3) reduction of activation of MMP9/MMP2, expressions of Bcl-2/Bax, c-Met receptor, NF-κB, and the phosphorylation of Akt. MDA-MB-231 cells exposed to 5-10 µM EGCG also showed significant augmentation of the apoptosis inducing effects of γ-radiation, concomitant with reduced NF-κB protein level and AKT phosphorylation, according to "Anti-Cancer Activities of Tea Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate in Breast Cancer Patients under Radiotherapy" by Zhang G, Wang Y, Zhang Y, Wan X, Li J, Liu K, Wang F, Liu Q, Yang C, Yu P, Huang Y, Wang S, Jiang P, Qu Z, Luan J, Duan H, Zhang L, Hou A, Jin S, Hsieh TC (1)

2. Anti cancers
In the review and outline the wide range of mechanisms by which epigallocatechin gallate (ECGC) and other green and black tea polyphenols' inhibition of cancer cell found that EGCG reduced dihydrofolate reductase activity, which would affect nucleic acid and protein synthesis. It also acted as an aryl hydrocarbon receptor an-tagonist by directly binding the receptor's molecular chaperone, heat shock protein 90. In conclusion, green and black tea polyphenols act at numerous points regulating cancer cell growth, survival, and metastasis, including effects at the DNA, RNA, and protein levels, according to "Mechanisms of cancer prevention by green and black tea polyphenols" by Beltz LA, Bayer DK, Moss AL, Simet IM.(2)

3. Anti-atherosclerotic effects
In the localization and target sites of tea catechins underlying their biological activity including anti-atherosclerotic activity, found that ECg could suppress the gene expression of a scavenger receptor CD36, a key molecule for foam cell formation, in macrophage cells. These results, for the first time, showed the target site of a tea component ECg in the aorta and might provide a mechanism for the anti-atherosclerotic actions of the catechins, according to "(-)-Epicatechin gallate accumulates in foamy macrophages in human atherosclerotic aorta: implication in the anti-atherosclerotic actions of tea catechins" by Kawai Y, Tanaka H, Murota K, Naito M, Terao J.(3)

4. Anti Inflammatory effects
In the determination of the up-regulated expressions of IL-8 or PGE(2) in Streptococci or PAMP-stimulated HDPF were inhibited by catechins, (-)-epicatechin gallate (ECG) and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). In TLR2 ligand-stimulated HDPF, found that catechins might be useful therapeutically as an anti-inflammatory modulator of dental pulpal inflammation, according to "Tea catechins reduce inflammatory reactions via mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways in toll-like receptor 2 ligand-stimulated dental pulp cells" by Hirao K, Yumoto H, Nakanishi T, Mukai K, Takahashi K, Takegawa D, Matsuo T.(4)

5. Cardiovascular diseases
In the identification of green tea catechins and its lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases, found that green tea catechins, particularly (-)-epigallocatechin gallate, interfere with the emulsification, digestion, and micellar solubilization of lipids, critical steps involved in the intestinal absorption of dietary fat, cholesterol, and other lipids. Based on the observations, it is likely that green tea or its catechins lower the absorption and tissue accumulation of other lipophilic organic compounds, according to "Green tea as inhibitor of the intestinal absorption of lipids: potential mechanism for its lipid-lowering effect" by Koo SI, Noh SK.(5)

6. Antiviral activities
In the observation of Catechin derivatives including (-)-epicatechin gallate(ECG), (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC) and green tea extract (GTE) and theirs inhibition of the activities of cloned human immunodeficiency virus type 1 reverse transcriptase (HIV-1 RT), duck hepatitis B virus replication complexes reverse transcriptase (DHBV RCs RT), herpes simplex virus 1 DNA polymerase (HSV-1 DNAP) and cow thymus DNA polymerase alpha (CT DNAP alpha, found that GCG exerts a mixed inhibition with respect to external template inducer poly (rA).oligo (dT) 12-18 and a noncompetitive inhibition with respect to substrate dTTP for HIV-1 RT. Bovine serum albumin significantly reduced the inhibitory effects of catechin analogues and GTE on HIV-1 RT. In tissue culture GTE inhibited the cytopathic effect of coxsackie B3 virus, but did not inhibit the cytopathic effects of HSV-1, HSV-2, influenza A or influenza B viruses, according to "[The inhibitory effects of catechin derivatives on the activities of human immunodeficiency virus reverse transcriptase and DNA polymerases].[Article in Chinese]" by Tao P.(6)

7. Metabolic syndrome
In the investigation of Tea catechins, including the gallate esters of catechins, (-)-epicatechin gallate (ECG) and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). in reducing serum cholesterol concentrations and suppressing postprandial hypertriacylglycerolemia in experimental animals and humans, found that tea catechins and heat-treated tea catechins with the galloyl moiety improve lipid metabolism and contribute to the prevention of the metabolic syndrome, according to "Multifunctional effects of green tea catechins on prevention of the metabolic syndrome" by Ikeda I.(7)

8. Cognitive effects
in the examination of examined whether long-term administration of green tea catechins [Polyphenon E (PE): 63% of epigallocatechin-3-gallate, 11% of epicatechin, 6% of (-)-epigallocatechin and 6% of (-)-epicatechin-gallate] prevents cognitive impairment in an animal model of AD, rats infused with Abeta1-40 into the cerebral ventricle, found that rats with preadministered PE had higher ferric-reducing antioxidation power of plasma as compared with the Vehicle group. Our results suggest that long-term administration of green tea catechins provides effective prophylactic benefits against Abeta-induced cognitive impairment by increasing antioxidative defenses, according to "Green tea catechins prevent cognitive deficits caused by Abeta1-40 in rats" by Haque AM, Hashimoto M, Katakura M, Hara Y, Shido O.(8)

9. Cholesterol
In the examination of the influence of green tea extract, epicatechin (EC), epicatechin galate (ECG) as well as epigallocatechin galate (EGCG) on oxidative modifications of LDL of human blood serum, found that Catechins and green tea abilities to protect lipophilic antioxidant--alpha-tocopherol against oxidation have been also examined. The results reveal that peroxidation of LDL is markedly prevented by green tea extract and in a slightly weaker way by catechins (EGCG in particular), which is manifested by a decrease in concentration of conjugated dienes, lipid hydroperoxides, MDA, dityrosine and by an increase in tryptophan content, according to "The comparison of effect of catechins and green tea extract on oxidative modification of LDL in vitro" by Ostrowska J, Skrzydlewska E.(9)

10. Anti diabetes
In the observation of the effect of tea catechins (epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG) and epicatechin (EC)) on markers of oxidative stress (malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH) and membrane -SH group) in erythrocytes from type 2 diabetics, found that tea catechins protect erythrocytes from t-BHP-induced oxidative stress, the effect being more pronounced in diabetic erythrocytes. The relative effectiveness of individual catechins are in the order of EGCG>ECG>EGC>EC. 7. We hypothesise that a higher intake of catechin-rich food by diabetic patients may provide some protection against the development of long-term complications of diabetes, according to "Protective role of tea catechins against oxidation-induced damage of type 2 diabetic erythrocytes" by Rizvi SI, Zaid MA, Anis R, Mishra N.(10)

11. Antioxidants
In the evaluation of the effects of the main polyphenolic components extracted from green tea leaves, i.e. (-)-epicatechin (EC), (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC), (-)-epicatechin gallate (ECG), (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and gallic acid (GA), against free radical initiated peroxidation of human low density lipoprotein (LDL), found that The antioxidative action of the green tea polyphenols includes trapping the initiating and/or propagating peroxyl radicals with the activity sequence EC>EGCG>ECG>EGC>GA for the AAPH initiated peroxidation, and reducing the alpha-tocopheroxyl radical to regenerate alpha-tocopherol with the activity sequence of ECG>EC>EGCG>EGC>GA and ECG>EGCG>GA>EC>EGC for the AAPH-initiated and BP-photosensitized peroxidations respectively, according to "Antioxidative effects of green tea polyphenols on free radical initiated and photosensitized peroxidation of human low density lipoprotein" by Liu Z, Ma LP, Zhou B, Yang L, Liu ZL.(11).

B. Interactions

Herbal Arnica Which is Better Than Chemo Cisplatin in Inhibited Onset and Gene Expression in Induction of Colon Cancer

Arnica may have a profound and therapeutic effect in ameliorated risk and treatment of colon cancer, some scientists suggested.

The results of the investigation were carried out by some respectable institutes, including the University of São Paulo and the University of Münster, and published on online medical literature.

Colon cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly and uncontrollably in the colon tissue. At the later stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue.

Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belongings to the family Asteraceae, antive to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Wound healing is process of repairing after damage of skin, tissues, organs, etc.

The ingredients
Helenalin, chamissonolid, Sesquiterpene lactone, lignans of the furofuran, dibenzylbutyrolactone, dibenzylbutyrolactol types, pinoresinol, epipinoresinol, phillygenin, matairesinol, nortrachelogenin, and nortracheloside, six dibenzylbutyrolactol derivative.

In the study to re confirm the use of technique in detected the early stage of colon cancer through examine the expression of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and colon rectal mucosal epithelial cell proliferation researchers at the the University of São Paulo conducted a experiment of 50 male Wistar rats randomly divided into 5 groups, as indicated below

* Groups G1 to G4 were given 4 injections of the carcinogen 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH)

* The G2 group received Lychnophora ericoides (LE) extracts for 6 wk.

* The groups G3 and G4 received LE for 4 wk and 2 wk, respectively, at the postinitiation and initiation phases of colonic carcinogenesis. The group G5 was the control.

Observation at the 42th day after the first injections of DMH for the neoplasic induction, found that Arnica treatment group (LE), including G2, 3 and 4 demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in the number of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and an reduction of cell proliferation induced by DMH.

These indications suggested that Arnica consisted a protective influence on the process of colon carcinogenesis, through suppressing both the initiation and the promotion of colonic carcinogenesis.

Furthermore, in the reexamine the cytotoxic activity of phytochemical compound isolated from Arnica, against COLO 320, a human colorectal cancer cell line using the microculture tetrazolium (MTT) assay, researcher found that isolated flavonoids showed moderate to low cytotoxicity, in compared to the reference compound cisplatin at 2.9 microM.

Cisplatin is a conventional chemo medication used to treat a number of cancers.

In 2 hours of injection, sesquiterpene lactones, helenalin at dose of 1.0 microM, possessing both the reactive alpha-methylene-gamma-lactone moiety and a reactive alpha,beta-unsubstituted cyclopentenone ring, displayed the strongest cytotoxicity against the tested colon cell line in compared to other compounds.

In compared to tested GLC4, a human small cell lung carcinoma cell line, COLO 320 was more sensitive to many flavonoids (especially for flavones), but more resistant to the cytotoxic effect of the sesquiterpene lactones.

Interestingly, in the evaluation of Arnica effect in deregulation of c-myb expression involved in the development of human tumors, especially certain types of leukemia and breast and colon cancer, researchers indicated that application of sesquiterpene lactones isolated from Arnica suppress Myb-dependent gene expression with potential anti-colon cancer activity with the IC50 values were in a range between 0.7 and >30 μM.

C-myb is a members of terminal domain with function in regulated the expression of hematopoiesis, cell proliferation, and differentiation in tumorigenesis.

In compared to other isolated bioactive compounds, furanoheliangolide goyazensolide and the pseudoguaianolide helenalin acetate with IC50 = 0.6 and 0.7 μM, respectively, represented the most active inhibitors of c-Myb dependent gene expression.

Observed by the control measurements for cell viability (MTS assay), researchers also found that c-Myb dependent gene expression is not a function of cytotoxicity/unspecific cell damage.

All these results indicated that Arnica processed a significant effect in prevented early onset, progression and treatment of colon cancer through it bioactive compounds in inhibited onset of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and colon rectal mucosal epithelial cell and colon cancer cells proliferation and gene expression in risk of colon cancer.

Herbal Arnica Inhibits Immune Suppressor Prostaglandin (PG)E(2) for Treatment of Non Small Cell Lung Cancer

Arnica may have a therapeutic and potential effect in reduced risk and treatment of non small cell lung cancer, some scientists suggested.

The result of the efficacy was reported by numbers of investigation conduced by several respectable institutes, such as University of Groningen and Center for Cancer Research, Bethesda and published on online medical literature.

Lung cancer is a chronic and medical condition characterized by the irregular and controllable cell growth in the lung tissue.

According to the University of Groningen in the investigated cytotoxicity of 21 flavonoids and 5 sesquiterpene lactones presented in Arnica species on GLC4, a human small cell lung carcinoma cell line, using the microculture tetrazolium (MTT) assays.

* Application of compound cisplatin (IC50 = 1.1 microM and 2.9 microM showed a greatest inhibition of human small cell lung carcinoma cell line, through cytotoxitic activity in compared to most flavonoids isolated.

* The most toxic compound was the flavone jaceosidin on GLC4

* Helenalin, possessing both the reactive alpha-methylene-gamma-lactone moiety and a reactive alpha,beta-unsubstituted cyclopentenone ring, displayed the strongest cytotoxicity on GLC4.

Flavonoids processed significantly antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, according to online literature were found abundantly in tea, citrus fruit, citrus fruit juices, berries, red wine,....

And phytochemicals sesquiterpene lactones found in some herbs, such as Artichoke, Boneset Eupatorium perfoliatum, Burdock, Calea ternifolia, Chamomile,.... are also used for treatment of diseases associated to inflammatory, protozoal, bacterial and microbial infection.

Additionally, in the evaluated the effects of anethole dithiolethione modified valproate, diclofenac and sulindac isolated from Arnica on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells, researchers found that injection of the bioactive chemicals exerted a potential anti lung cancer effect through inhibited the levels of prostaglandin (PG)E(2) in NSCLC cell lines A549 and NCI-H1299 in compared to the conventional medicine COX-2 inhibitor DuP-697.

Prostaglandin (PG)E(2) is linked to progression of several types of cancer through its tumor-associated inflammation in created an immunosuppressive microenvironment, allowing tumor cells to escape immunosurveillance.

Moreover, in compared to all anethole modificatiions in vivo, S-valproate and S-diclofenac, exerted a strong anti growth of A549 cells. but not S-sulindac.

S-valproate and S-diclofenac significantly inhibited A549 or NCI-H1299 xenograft proliferation in nude mice, but had no effect on the nude mouse body weight.

Dr. Moody TW, the lead author, after taking into comparable tests of all ingredients through Western blot, said, "S-valproate and S-diclofenac inhibit the growth of NSCLC cells and reduce PGE(2) levels, they may prove beneficial in the chemoprevention and/or therapy of NSCLC".

The information findings suggested that Arnica and its bioctive ingredients may be considered as a functional herb in prevention and combined with conventional standard therapy in stop progression and treatment of non small cell lung cancer.

Diabetes is defined as a condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose. It is either caused by cells in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Many herbs have been proven in studies to be effective in treating type II diabetes, including Aloe vera.

As a popular herbal remedy in the United Kingdom, oral administration of aloe vera might be a useful adjunct for lowering blood glucose in diabetic patients as well as for reducing blood lipid levels in patients with hyperlipidaemia.

In other study of Aloe vera gel in a mouse model of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, Oral administration of PAG for 8 weeks was found to reduce circulating blood glucose concentrations to a normal level in these DIO mice.

Its leaf is also found to be useful in treating diabetes, as study said A. vera leaf pulp extract showed hypoglycaemic activity on type I (IDDM) and type II (NIDDM) diabetic rats, the effectiveness being enhanced for type II diabetes in comparison with glibenclamide. On the contrary, A. vera leaf gel extract showed hyperglycaemic activity on NIDDM rats.

2. Ance vulgaris
Ance vulgaris, one of skin diseases with areas of scaly red skin with seborrhea, blackheads and whiteheads. Aloe vera one of many herbs has been studied and researched in pharmaceutical world, because of its common problem to the young ages and commercial profits.

The study to compare the efficacy and safety of the combination of tretinoin (TR) cream (0.05%) and Aloe vera topical gel (50%) with TR and vehicle, has been well tolerated and significantly more effective than TR and vehicle for the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris and with less side effects.

Other researchers in the observation of traditional medicines of many cultures used to treat skin diseases, indicated that certain ingredients, including aloe vera, have been identified in the treatment of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.

3. Gastric Ulcers

Gastric ulcers is defined as a condition of a localized tissue erosion in the lining the stomach. as a result of bacteria Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) in most cases.

Some people with gastric ulcers may be not experience any symptoms at all, while others may have burning pain, severe nausea, and vomiting.

In the comparison of the effects of Aloe vera and sucralfate on gastric microcirculatory changes, cytokine levels and gastric ulcer healing, treatment of Aloe vera found to reduce leukocyte adherence and TNF-alpha level, elevate IL-10 level and promote gastric ulcer healing.

Because of its Anti-inflammatory effects, treatment of A. vera process the enhancement in leukocyte-endothelium interaction are associated with reduction in TNF-alpha level.

Other in the study of acute gastric mucosal lesions induced by 0.6 M HCl and acid outpu, indicated that Aloe vera is endowed with gastric acid anti-secretory activity and could protect the gastric mucosa at low concentrations against injurious agents.

Another component of Aloe vera, the Polymer fraction (Avpf; molecular weight cut-off ≥50 kDa; 150 mg/kg body weight, p.o.), reduce 50% of the mRNA expressions of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), according to the study.

4. Cancers
Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable way in our body, have become progressively worse and damaged other healthy tissues, sometimes spreads to other organs in the body via lymph or blood and results may be in death.

Aloe-Emodi, a chemical compound found in Aloe vera, specifically suppress breast cancer cell proliferation by targeting ER α protein stability through distinct mechanisms and may be used as a possible application of anthraquinones in preventing or treating breast cancer in the future.

Also in other study, Aloe-Emodi is considered as a potential value for the treatment of gastric cancer and cervical cancer because of its mechanisms are by means of cell cycle interruption and induce differentiation and suppressed the expression of PKCalpha and c-myc.

Radiotherapy are most often used to treat head and neck cancer patients. Ina study ofAloe Vera, Dr. Ahmadi A. found that oral Aloe vera mouthwash may not only prevent radiation-induced mucositis, but also may reduce oral candidiasis of patients undergoing head and neck radiotherapy due to its antifungal and immunomodulatory properties.

5. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOs)
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is defined as endocrinologic diseases caused by undeveloped follicles clumping on the ovaries that interferes with the function of the normal ovaries as resulting of enlarged ovaries, leading to hormone imbalance( excessive androgen), resulting in male pattern hair development, acne, irregular period or absence of period, weight gain and effecting fertility. It effects over 5% of women population or 1 in 20 women. According to the study by Desai BN, Maharjan RH, Nampoothiri LP. almost 70% PCOS women have abnormal serum lipid levels (dyslipidemia) and 50% of these women are obese. Several classes of pharmacological agents have been used to manage dyslipidemia. However, studies have shown adverse effects associated with these drugs.

Aloe Vera may be a potential herb in treating Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome by enhancing the reductions of plasma triglyceride and LDL cholesterol levels, with an increase in HDL cholesterol or by restoring the ovarian steroid status.

According to the study of PCOS was induced in Charles Foster female rats by oral administration of non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor letrozole (0.5 mg/kg body weight, 21 days), AVG treated PCOS rats exhibited significant reduction in plasma triglyceride and LDL cholesterol levels, with an increase in HDL cholesterol.

The gel treatment also caused reversion of abnormal estrous cyclicity, glucose intolerance, and lipid metabolizing enzyme activities, bringing them to normal. Other study also indicated that Aloe vera gel formulation exerts a protective effect in against the PCOS phenotype by restoring the ovarian steroid status, and altering key steroidogenic activity.

This can be attributed to phyto-components present in the extract.

Dr.Pérez YY and the research team in the study of Effect of a polyphenol-rich extract from Aloe vera gel on experimentally induced insulin resistance in mice also indicated that decreasing significantly both body weight (p < 0.008) and blood glucose levels of Aloe, calculated using the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) formula by the polyphenol-rich extract from Aloe vera.

Also in the confirmation of above result, study of Aloe vera leaves on blood glucose level in type I and type II diabetic rat models, vera leaf pulp extract showed hypoglycaemic activity on IDDM and NIDDM rats, the effectiveness being enhanced for type II diabetes in comparison with glibenclamide. On the contrary,

A. vera leaf gel extract showed hyperglycaemic activity on NIDDM rats. It may therefore be concluded that the pulps of Aloe vera leaves devoid of the gel could be useful in the treatment of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Where non-diabetic (ND), type I (IDDM) and type II (NIDDM) diabetic rats.

6. Gingivitis
Gingivitis is defined as a condition of Inflammation of Gum Diseases.

Aloe Vera anti-inflammatory property may be the result of the plant used in treatment of gum diseases. In the sudy of 45 patients who were diagnosed with plaque-induced gingivitis were included, aloe mouth wash is proven to be the most potential in reduction in gingival inflammation caused by plagues.

Other in the the randomized, controlled, and double-blind study, a total of 148 systemically healthy subjects, showed statistically significant decrease in PI, MGI, and BI scores after the rinse regimen began in comparison with the use of chlorhexidine.

But Dr. de Oliveira SM, and the research team in comparison of Aloe vera and fluoridated dentifrice, found that here was a significant reduction on plaque and gingivitis in both groups, but no statistically significant difference was observed among them (p>0.01), Aloe vera did not show any additional effect on plaque and gingivitis control compared to the fluoridated dentifrice.

7. Psoriasis

Psoriasis is defined as chronic condition of inflammatory skin disease, affecting the joins and mostly happens to people who are obese are predisposed to diabetes and heart disease.

Many herbal extracts have been used as topical management of plaque psoriasis, including Aloe vera based on multiple studies.

Aloe vera gel is used in alternative medicine over the century for the treatment of skin diseases, including psoriasis, and recent study showed that ethanolic extract of Aloe vera leaf gel also produced a significant increase in relative epidermal thickness and an overall antipsoriatic activity of high effective rate.

Other in the comparison of comparion to evaluate the efficacy of Topical aloe vera (AV) and 0.1% triamcinolone acetonide (TA) in mild to moderate plaque psoriasis, AV cream may be more effective than 0.1% TA cream found to be more effective in reducing the clinical symptoms of psoriasis.

Unfortunately, in diverse dermatologic conditions, even though there are some promising results with the use of aloe vera, but clinical effectiveness of oral and topical aloe vera may require further studies, according to the study of Dr. Feily A, and Dr. Namazi MR.

8. Irritable bowel syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome is defined as a condition, if a patient is diagnosed with abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits at least three times a month for the last 3 months without preexistence of other disease.

Aloe vera (AV) has long been suggested by herbal medicine in treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms. In the comparison of the effectiveness of a mixture of Aloe vera (AV) and Matricaria recutita (German chamomile, GC) in treating Irritable bowel syndrome, GC inhibited only small bowel transit while the AV/GC mixture delayed gastric emptying at the doses of 150 and 300 mg/kg.

The AV/GC mixture also reduced colonic transit and small bowel transit at the dose of 150 mg/kg. In other randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial of to test the effects of aloe vera for irritable bowel syndrome, there was no evidence that AV benefits patients with IBS and superior to placebo in improving quality of life proven Irritable Bowel Syndrome patients, but in 49 completed the protocol to 1 month and 41 to 3 months.

Eleven of thirty-one (35%) AV patients, and 6 of 27 (22%) placebo patients responded at 1 month (p = 0.763). Diarrhoea predominant patients showed a trend towards a response to treatment at 1 month (10/23 V 2/14, p = 0.07).

9. Skin diseases
Skin diseases is defined as a condition of skin damage and classified according to each pathogenic causes of diseases.

In the a systematic review of Aloe vera's clinical effectiveness, topical application of aloe vera is not an effective preventative for radiation-induced skin injuries, but might be effective for genital herpes and psoriasis.

In support to above, study by Feily A, Namazi MR. indicated that Topical application of aloe vera is not an effective in sunburn or suntan protection, but might be effective in treating genital herpes, psoriasis, human papilloma virus, seborrheic dermatitis, aphthous stomatitis, xerosis, lichen planus, frostbite, burn, wound healing and inflammation.
