Banana may be used as functional foods in the prevention and treatment of acute and chronic constipation, some scientists suggested.
Constipation is a natural condition characterized by infrequent or hard to pass of bowel movements
People with chronic constipation may experience symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating,.... and a feeling of not completely passed the bowel movement.
Untreated long-term constipation may increase the risk of hemorrhoids, anal fissure or fecal impaction, the most common complications of a patient with a chronic condition.
Acute constipation is a condition which starts suddenly and lasts for 3 days or less due to prolonged inactivity, medication, dehydration or missing a bowel movement. And chronic constipation is a condition of a stool frequency of less than three per week that lasts several months.
Believe or not, constipation is the most common digestive complaint in North America.
The prevalence of chronic constipation ranges from 2-28%, affecting 63 million people in North America. Some studies suggested that the prevalence of constipation increases with age and is more common in women than men.
The exact causes of constipation are still under evaluation. However, some researchers suggested that medical condition such as colon cancer, colon damage, diabetes, thyroid disorders, Parkinson’s disease, pregnancy and medications such as pain medications (narcotics), blood pressure medications (calcium channel blockers), anti-seizure medication, and antispasmodics are common risk factors of constipation onset.
Furthermore, aging which has a strong implication in structural lesions of the colon may also associate to increased risk of the condition.
Dr. Lazebnik LB, in the final report of chronic constipation conducted by using data collected from 1189 randomly selected subjects older than 18 years old, said, "... low level of dietary fiber and fluid intake and low physical activity (in male younger 55 y.o. with increased body mass index)".
Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belonging to the family of the lily and the orchid.
In the study of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) which are oligosaccharides occurred naturally in banana, researchers found that* Dietary FOS are not hydrolyzed by small intestinal glycosidases and reach the cecum structurally unchanged.
* FOS are considered as soluble dietary fiber which processes a strong effect in the prevention of risk acute constipation and treatment of chronic constipation.
* Furthermore, FOS are increasingly included in food products and infant formulas due to their prebiotic effect stimulate the growth of nonpathogenic intestinal microflora
* Moreover, consumption of banana fructooligosaccharides (FOS) not only increases fecal bolus and the frequency of depositions, but at a dose of 4-15 g/day given to healthy subjects, the oligosaccharides also will reduce constipation, one of the growing problems of modern society, and newborns during the first months of life.
These results suggested that banana containing a major compound of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) may be used as functional foods in the improved digestive system in absorbed nutrients and fluids and promoted bowel movement in prevention and treatment of acute and chronic constipation.
Unfortunately, in the investigated the significance and risk factors of bowel obstruction caused by the consumption of wild bananas (BOWB) in Laos, researchers at the SFE Medical Project suggested that while banana fruits are considered as a digestive enhancer, intake of wild banana which often containing seeds can cause bowel obstruction, including constipation.
According to the study, out of participants of 227, 91.2% had eaten WB; 46.3% had also eaten the seeds and 45.4% knew of complications resulting from eating WB; 42.3% were aware of the complications of ingesting the seeds (constipation [37.9%], appendicitis/abdominal pain/vomiting [2.6% each] and bloated stomach/death [1.3% each]).
The findings suggested that eating banana seeds is associated to increase the risk of digestive dysfunction.
Taking all together, the edible part of a banana, containing major active compound fructooligosaccharides (FOS) may be used as alternative treatment for patients with acute and chronic without inducing side effects.
People who are at infrequent bowel movement may want to add a portion of banana into their diet for preventive measure
Some types of banana in the tropical world contain seeds. Please don't eat them, if you find one

Phytochemical Tartaric acid, The Natural Antibiotic Alternative
Phytochemicals may be next potential sources of new medications for the treatment of diseases with little or no side effects.
Tartaric acid, a phytochemical of the organic acid may be considered an alternative antibiotic remedy to replace the conventional medicine for the treatment of infectious disease caused by harmful bacteria, some studies suggested.
Phytochemicals, the natural chemical constituent, protect the plants against diseases and form their outer's color.
Out of millions of bacteria presented in this world, only a hundred of them cause infectious diseases. And, most bacteria that cause large-scale disease in human history may be closed to extinction.
Contrast to general belief, most bacteria live as independent cells, they share the basic characteristics of all living things, they breathe, metabolize, produce waste, and maintain a membrane potential.
However, bacteria do not process a nucleus in which their DNA is separated from the rest of the cell.
In the differentiation of bacteria, one must know that not all bacteria are bad. Some bacteria found in the digestive tract has been found to aid digestion and prevent the imbalance of bad and good bacteria. In other words, most bacteria are harmless.
Bacteria can enter our body to cause infection through an open wound, drinking bacterially contaminated water, closed contact with infectious patients, breathing in the exhaled droplets of an infected person.
In order to protect the body against bacterial invasion, the immune white blood cells after sensing the presence of harmful pathogens stimulate the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection with an aim to destroy the bacteria before causing damage to the body.
However, overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines in some cases can also cause the death of healthy cells, leading to improper healing with the formation of scars.
Tartaric acid is a phytochemical of the organic acid found abundantly in nuts, apricots, apples, sunflower, avocado, grapes, etc.
In the finding natural antibiotics without inducing side effects as of those in conventional medicine, researchers at the Mississippi State University conducted an experiment to examine the antibacterial effects of the water-soluble extracts prepared from purple (cultivar Ison) and bronze (cultivar Carlos) muscadine seeds with or without heating.
Application of the Ison extracts displayed a strong antimicrobial activity against a cocktail of three strains of Escherichia coli O157: H7.
Chemicals analysis suggested the extract had a higher acidity (pH 3.39 to 3.43) compared to normal extract.
The major chemical compounds associated to the antibacterial activity including total phenolics (2.21 to 3.49 mg/ml), tartaric acid (5.6 to 10.7 mg/ml), tannic acid (5.7 to 8.1 mg/ml), and gallic acid (0.33 to 0.59 mg/ml), are also higher than those of the Carlos extracts.
Furthermore, heat treatment on both extracts increased antimicrobial activity, possibly because of increased acidity of the tartaric acid, total phenolics, and individual phenolics.
Heating of Ison extracts increased ellagic acid up to 83%. higher than the minimum of 10.7 mg/ml tartaric acid used alone exerted a strong effect against E. coli O157:H7 .
However, up to 10.7 mg/ml tartaric acid alone was not as effective against E. coli O157:H7 as were water-soluble seed extracts.
The ingredients which are responsible for the antibacterial efficacy of the purple (cultivar Ison) and bronze (cultivar Carlos) muscadine seeds are tannic and gallic acids, which process property of inactivation of pathogens.
Dr. Kim TJ, the lead author, on the final phase of the study wrote, "Water-soluble muscadine seed extracts may be useful for incorporation into juice and other beverage products as natural preservatives".
Taken together, tartaric acid exerted a significant effect in the inhibition of bacterium may be considered a functional phytochemical for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of bacterial infection.

Caffeinated Coffee, The Anti Acute and Chronic Inflammatory Beverage, Scientists Find
Intake of coffee daily and regularly has a profound effect in reduced inflammatory expression, a renowned institute study suggested.
Inflammation is a natural reaction of the immune system in protecting the body against foreign invasion and after injury and damage to tissues or organs.
Most cases of acute inflammation are systemic immune response occurred when the body's white blood cells release chemicals into the blood or injured tissues to protect your body against infection caused by the foreign invasion through the stimulated production of inflammatory cytokines.
Under normal condition, cytokines IL-6 and IL10 exert anti-inflammatory activity against inflammation by inhibition of tumor necrosis factor (TNF), and IL-1 production by macrophages. However, in the case of bodily injury or damage, cytokines IL-6 and IL10 can switch promptly to pro-inflammatory cytokines for maximum protection of the body against infection,
However, in some cases, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines over a prolonged period of time not only can cause to damage to cells and tissue of the infectious site but also can injure the nearby healthy cells and tissue, leading to abnormal tissue healing such as scars and a high degree of cell death.
Conventional medicine such as prescription NSAIDs and pain relief, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) and naproxen sodium (Aleve) may be effective in reducing pain and acute inflammation. However, they can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke and side effects of dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, constipation, and seizures.
If you are depended totally to conventional medicine for treatment of inflammation, please make sure you know the risks and side effects.
Chronic inflammation is an inflammation that lasts serval months, sometimes years.
Researchers do not the exact cause of chronic inflammation, but they do know that it is caused by the: failure of the immune system to completely eliminate substances that cause an acute inflammation or immune system mistakenly a normal healthy tissue as a pathogen and attacks them.
Coffee has become a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
In the analysis to clarify the beneficial effects of caffeine consumption in human health and behaviour, the mechanisms against pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases, researchers at the joint study led by the University of Coimbra found that coffee caffeine reduced the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, through controlling microglia(cells in the brain and spinal cord) reactivity and neuroinflammation.
Dr. Madeira MH, the lead researchers said, "caffeine controls microglia-mediated neuroinflammatory response associated with the majority of neurodegenerative conditions".
Interestingly, the study to evaluate the Spent coffee grounds (SCG) anti-inflammatory effects conducted lead by the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro, suggested that the efficacy of SCG in reduced risk of inflammatory is probably associated to high contents of antioxidant such as phenolic compounds, and fermentability by the human gut flora, in regulating the pro-inflammatory expressions, even with roasting effect in reduced total phenolic contents of SCG in influenced colonic fermentation.
After considering all other factors, the study strongly insisted, "Spent coffee grounds (SCG), rich in dietary fiber can be fermented by colon microbiota producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) with the ability to prevent inflammation".
More importantly, in the examined numbers of prospective and retrospective cohort studies, coffee consumption against relative risk of developing major depressive disorder in humans, caffeine and phytochemicals such as chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid and caffeic acid, all important constituents of coffee, showed to attenuated risk of depression through mediated inflammation, in vitro and in vivo.
Dr. Hall S, the lead author said, "The ability of bioactive coffee constituents to modulate the parameters of neuroinflammation has been shown with caffeine having strong antioxidant properties in vitro, chlorogenic acid and the caffeic acid having strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in vitro and ferulic acid having activities in vivo animal models of depression".
Taking all together, there is no doubt that coffee intake daily and regularly has a significant effect in reduced risk of inflammation through overexpression of the presence of bioactive constituents.

Celery, the Potential Anti Liver Caner Functional Food
Scientists in the cancer research team have found a functional vegetable which may be the next pharmaceutical target to discover the chemotherapy for treatment of liver cancer.
Liver cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably that starts in the surface of the inner lining of liver tissue as the results of alternation of DNA.
At the early stage of liver cancer, most patients do not experience any symptom. However, as cancer continues to grow, in some stages, it will suppress the nearby nerve cell to facilitate local pain and discomforts.
At the advanced stage, the liver cancerous cell can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through the circulation of blood and fluids.
Researchers do not know why the liver cells of some people are susceptible to DNA alternation, while others do not, even they have the same health conditions, family history, and similar diet pattern.
Some researchers suggested that people who carry the infectious liver virus are associated with the major risk of the liver cancer onset.
Researchers at the cancer program at the joint study led by the Technical University of Munich/Helmholtz Zentrum München in the confirmation of hepatitis B and C viruses risk of acute and chronic infections that can lead to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) showed that the hepatitis B and C besides contributing to the development of liver cancer, they also cause over 1.3 million deaths per year worldwide.
According to the statistic, liver cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with HCC representing approximately 90% of all primary liver cancer cases.
Furthermore, patients who carry the hepatitis B, and C are at the increased risk of liver cirrhosis, the early stage of liver cancer.
Moreover, in the reassessment of the relationship between the risk liver cancer in hepatitis B and C carrier patients, researchers found that the majority of viral-associated HCC patients developed liver cirrhosis before liver cancer onset, however, hepatitis B virus infection can promote HCC development without the prior end-stage liver disease.
Therefore, if you are a carrier of hepatitis B and C, please make sure that you know how to protect yourself against the risk of liver cancer.
Some researchers suggested the best protection for people who have been recently exposed to the hepatitis B and C virus and are not vaccinated, are usually given the vaccine along with a shot of hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) and a combination of antiviral drugs, respectively.
Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belonging to the family Apiaceae.
The vegetable is cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable. Celery can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranging in a conical shape joined at a common base.
Major phytochemicals found in celery include 3-n-butylphthalide, acetylenic, coumarins, phenolic acids, limonene, phthalides, and apigenin.
In the study to reaffirm the liver protective effect of celery seed, researchers launched an investigation to examine the anti-liver cancer activity of a methanolic extract of Apium graveolens seeds (celery seeds) on positive foci of gamma-GT in the liver of Wistar rats.
Application of celery seeds extracts demonstrated a liver protective effect in a dose-dependent against toxins induced hepatocarcinogenesis and gamma-GT positive foci in the rat treatment group.
5 days of pretreatment of celery seeds extracts stimulated the production of antioxidant enzymes in the host such as glutathione (GSH) and detoxifying enzymes such as quinone reductase (QR), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and serum gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) which were suppressed by the injection of toxins.
Dr. Sultana S, the lead author said, "A. graveolens is a potent plant against experimentally induced hepatocarcinogenesis in Wistar rats".
Furthermore, in the study of the liver protective effects of perillyl alcohol, a monoterpene isolated from the essential oils of lavendin, peppermint, spearmint, cherries, celery seeds, and several other plants, the researchers found that
* Application of perillyl alcohol not only displays a significant activity against liver cancer but also inhibits the progression of pancreatic and mammary tumors.
* Perillyl alcohol actively induces apoptosis in liver tumor cells without affecting normal cells.
* Perillyl alcohol reverts tumor cells back to a differentiated state.
* Further differentiation indicated that Perillyl alcohol exerts the liver protective effect through activating the production of protein in responsible of programming cell death and deactivating the protein with function in pro cellular survival.
Taken altogether, celery may be considered a functional food for the prevention of liver cancer and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of liver cancer, depending to the large human sample size and multi-center studies.

Green Tea, the Beverage May Speeds Up the Healing of Chronic Back Pain
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in ameliorated symptoms and treatment of chronic back pain, some scientists suggested.
Chronic back pain is a condition of musculoskeletal disorders(MSDs) of the spine that lasts more than 3 months, caused by various factors, including bone fractures, muscle or ligament injury, arthritis, herniated discs. aging,...
Certain symptoms are associated with patients with chronic back pain, including loss of bowel or bladder control if the condition is on the lower back, numbness, tingling, or weakness in one or both legs and constant pain that gets worse at night.
According to the statistic provided by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare,
* In 2014–15, an estimated 3.7 million Australians (16%, or 1 in 6 people) had chronic back problems.
* The prevalence of the condition increases with age up to before declining slightly in aged 75 and over.
*More than three-quarters (77%) of people with chronic back problems were of working age (15–64), and
* In 2008–09, around 1.8% of total health-care expenditure in Australia ($1.2 billion) was attributed to back problems, causing a significant burden to the economy in the country.
Some researchers in the finding of mutated genes which have strong influence in the onset of chronic back pain suggested, " ...only a minority of the genetic influences was caused by genes affecting disc degeneration suggesting that genes involved in pain perception, signaling, and psychological processing (Foulkes and Wood 2008), and genetic variants of immune genes (Solovieva et al. 2004b) contribute to the proportion of heritability of chronic back pain".
These results indicated that genetic mutation inherited from the parent may have a minor effect in contributing to the early development of the condition.
Green tea is a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.
Application of biologically active polyphenol epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) demonstrated a significant effect in reduced back pain through facilitating the anti-inflammatory and anti-catabolic activity in patients with intervertebral disc (IVD) disease due to age-related changes in the adult disc in the induction of back pain.
According to the study by the Institute for Biomechanics (D-HEST), ETH Zurich ingestion of green tea EGCG on back pain patients, human IVD cells isolated from patients undergoing surgery due to degenerative disc disease (n = 34) and cultured in 2D or 3D indicated that the phytochemical inhibited levels of inflammatory response activated by IL-1β, a cytokine protein produced by macrophages, with function in contributing the inflammatory pain hypersensitivity in the site of infection observed by the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunofluorescence and transcription factor assay.
Furthermore, the application also displayed a strong effect on reducing expression of
p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases in mediated inflammatory factors of IL-1β in responded to stress stimuli.
Also, according to the Institute for Biomechanics (D-HEST), in the investigation of the analgesic properties of EGCG, by the von Frey filament test in Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 60), green tea EGCG injection also significantly inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators as expressed in above and reduced matrix metalloproteinases which have been found to associate to pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and other proteins to regulate varied aspects of inflammation and immunity.
Moreover, in the radiculopathy pain component, researchers also indicated that EGCG inhibited the inflammation in the precipitated back pain through modulating the activity of IRAK-1 in glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle and p38, c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) and nuclear factor NF-κB in response to stress stimuli.
Some researchers indicated that back pain may also be induced by muscle degeneration and impairment nerve injury, leading to increased levels of reactive oxygen species in the induction of tissue apoptosis.
In crushing of the sciatic nerve induced back pain in a tested animal, application of green tea EGCG improved motor function in the toe spread and foot positioning and gained in the percentage motor deficit.
More importantly, EGCG expressed a significant effect in the recovery of sensory innervation in neuropathic pain-like syndrome and improved muscle tissues from injured limb with severe histopathological alterations at the end of week 3 post-surgery in treated animals.
According to the RT-PCR assay, EGCG treatment also normalized the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, the abnormal ratio of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio has been found to associate with the induction of nerve cell apoptosis as well as inhibiting levels of p53 with function in regulated the cell death cycle at days 3 and 7 post-surgery.
These results demonstrated an important effect of green tea EGCG in the enhanced functional recovery, by protecting muscle fibers from cellular death, and improving morphological recovery in the skeletal muscle after nerve injuries.
However, in the study of caffeine activity in the modulation of pain perception in chronic pain states of 131 patients with chronic low back pain (64 men and 67 women; mean age = 42.1 years; mean duration of pain = 6.1 years) referred to a multidisciplinary pain clinic over a 2-year period, researchers found that caffeine is not related to the global experience of pain and disability in patients with chronic low back pain, although high caffeine use may be embedded in the context of other unhealthy lifestyle behaviors.
Taken all together, green tea and its bioactive component epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) may be considered functional foods in reduced back pain caused by physical damage of the spine and injured nerve cells.
Intake of green tea supplement should be taken with exceptional care as some cases of liver acute toxicity have been reported in medical literature.

Carrots, the Veggie Which Normalizes Levels of Blood Glucose in Patient with Hyperglycemia
Carrots may have a profound and positive effect in normalizing the levels of sugar in the blood, some scientists suggested.
Hyperglycemia is a condition characterized abnormal high levels of plasma glucose circulated in the blood.
The syndrome does not cause any symptom until the levels of sugar are elevated above 180 to 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or 10 to 11 millimoles per liter (mmol/L).
Hyperglycemia is considered an early culprit for the onset of type 2 diabetes. Untreated managed type 1 and 2 diabetes that causes prolonged periods of high blood glucose may induce some unpredictable complications, such as nerve, kidney, foot, and eye damage.
If you are diabetic and have fasted and after meal fasting glucose of higher than 130 mg/dL and over 140 mg/dL respectively, you are considered to have the onset of hyperglycemia.
The causes of hyperglycemia are associated with numbers of the factor. However, researchers as of today, do not know why people with the same health condition and family history, some are susceptible to the risk of the condition, while others do not.
Some researchers suggested that people who have diabetes skipping or forgetting your insulin or oral glucose-lowering medicine, eat far more carbohydrates compared to the normal intake of insulin and don't take part in daily exercise are most dangerous to have hyperglycemia.
In compared to hyperglycemia, prediabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels that are higher than normal but lower than of diabetics.
If you are diabetes, and experiencing symptoms of fruity-smelling breath, persistent gastrointestinal discomforts, shortness of breath and dry mouth, you have hyperglycemia. Please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
In serious cases, some diabetes with hyperglycemia also experience symptoms of confusion, stomach pain, and coma.
Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.
In the study to investigate the relationship between hyperglycemia and both serum carotenoids and intake of vegetables and fruits in a total of 284 subjects, 133 with a history of diabetes mellitus or 151 with hyperglycemia diagnosed using a 5.6% cutoff value for hemoglobin A1c (High HbA1c group, n = 151) from among inhabitants of a rural area in Hokkaido, Japan, match with healthy control researchers found that
* The odds ratio (OR) for high HbA1c was 0.49 (95% confidence interval: 0.29-0.85) on high intake frequency of carrot and pumpkin.
* There are no significant relationships between high HbA1c and intake frequencies of other vegetables and fruits.
These results suggested that carrot and pumpkin have a positive effect in reducing the levels of blood glucose in patients with high HbA1c, compared to the intake of other fruits and vegetables.
Furthermore, in the evaluation of serum carotenoid levels among residents with hyperglycemia who were screened in a health check-up program for the inhabitants living in a rural area of Hokkaido compared with those with normal levels, researchers showed that
* Serum levels of alpha, beta-carotenes, and cryptoxanthin were lower among those with high HbA1c newly detected than among those with a normal level.
* Observation on diabetics who have already been under control in the clinic, showed no significant differences of serum levels of carotenoids, or lipids such as total cholesterol and TBARS compared to other groups
The information indicated that serum carotenoid levels can be used as an indicator of food intake and oxidative stress for the prediabetic condition since newly detected hyperglycemia tends to show lower serum antioxidant levels such as beta-carotene, and higher serum lipid peroxide levels.
Interestingly, researchers after taking other factors into account said, " males who currently smoked and drank alcohol, the intake frequency of carrot or pumpkin was significantly lower for those with high HbA1c than for the others".
Taken all together, people who have diabetes and are at higher risk may want to add a portion of carrot into their daily diet for preventive measure.
Since the studies quoted in this articles are observational bases, therefore, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of carrot's anti-hyperglycemic possibilities.

Asparagus, The Veggie and Plant That Boosts and Restores Cellular and Humoral Immunity, Scientists Say
Asparagus may have profound and potential effect in reducing the risk of infection caused by microorganisms and preventing the overactive immune system to launch an attack of the body tissue, mistakenly, some scientists suggested.
The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprise the body's defense system against diseases.
The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections. Beside foods and nutritional supplements, herbs also play an important role in helping the immune system defend against viruses and bacteria attacks.
Immunomodulatory activity is an action that improves the under active immune function that is susceptible to the invasion of the foreign microorganism and inhibits the overactive immune system that causes autoimmune diseases.
In other words, the immunomodulatory activity involved antimicrobial agents is to modulate the genes involved in immune reactions, or of the neurohormonal system which regulates immune functions and any toxic or immunotoxic effects such as allergic reactions or destruction of immune effectors, that may cause harm to the body or interfere with the body normal function.
Dr. Marie-Thérèse Labro in the study "Immunomodulatory Effects of Antimicrobial Agents. Part I"
with the assessment of the battle against infections, microorganisms are still a threat to mankind. said, "we have now entered the third era of anti-infective strategy, which intends to favor the interplay between active molecules and the immune system. The first part of this review focuses on the potential immunomodulating properties of anti-infective agents, beginning with antibacterial and antiviral agents".
Truly, regardless of hundreds of antibacterial medicine were produced by mankind, the major concerns remain about the emergence of resistant and multidrug-resistant pathogens,
The doctor continued, "(Particularly), the antiviral drug armamentarium is comprised of only a few dozens of compounds which are highly pathogen-specific, and resistance is also a concern".
Therefore, improving the immune function as of today still is the best method in reducing the risk of infection and autoimmune diseases'
Asparagus is a flowering plant, belonging to species the genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, and northwest Germany, northern Africa, and western Asia.
The plant and food have been used from early times as a vegetable and medicine, because of its delicate flavor and diuretic properties.
In the investigate whether Asparagus racemosus Linn. (Fam. Liliaceae) an ethnopharmacologically acclaimed Ayurvedic medicinal plant processes the immunomodulatory effect against pathogens, researchers at the Centre for Phytochemistry and Pharmacology, by examining the action of an aqueous extract from the plant.
Observation of the immunoreactivity after injecting with the extract into the human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) isolated from whole blood on a ficoll-hypaque density gradient, showed a dose-dependent in stimulating the immune NK cell activity with a peak increase of 16.9±4.4% at 5.6 μg/ml.
Further differentiation suggested that ARP can achieve a higher stimulatory immune activity of 51.8±1.2% at 25 μg/ml.
These results suggested that A. racemosus processed an immune modulatory effect in potentiating the NK cell activity of the immune system.
Some researchers in the concerns of the current drugs efficacies that suppress the immune function during the course of infection, conducted a study with an aim to find a natural compound with the similar efficacy but no side effects.
The combination of Asparagus racemosus, an immunomodulatory drug, in combination with cisplatin against Leishmania donovani was used in the testing against parasite infected BALB/c mice.
According to the final report, infection of A. racemosus at a dose of 650 mg/kg b.wt./day for 15 days, in combination with cisplatin at the dose of 5 mg/kg b.wt./day for 5 days, intraperitoneally exerted a significant effect in enhancing the clearance of parasites as determined by Giemsa-stained liver impression smears.
Moreover, Besides having better killing activity, the combination group achieved increased production of disease resolving Th-1 response (IFN-gamma, IL-2) that has a function in killing intracellular parasites bacteria and viruses, heightened DTH (delayed type hypersensitivity) response and augmented levels of antibody IgG2a.
The findings may suggest that A. racemosus in combination with cisplatin in L. donovani infected BALB/c mice boosted and restored both cellular and humoral immunity.
Importantly, after taking into account co and confounders, Dr. Sachdeva H, the lead author added, "Moreover, A. racemosus in combination with cisplatin not only provided enhanced protective immune response but also resulted in remarkable improved kidney and liver function tests as manifested by normal levels of SGOT, SGPT, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine and urea in blood plasma with normal histological observations as compared to only cisplatin treated L. donovani infected BALB/c mice".
Taken all together, Asparagus used alone or in combination with cisplatin in L. donovani may be considered a primary Immunomodulatory therapy for treatment for people with immune diseases.
However, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of asparagus immunomodulatory possibilities.

Asparagus, The Whole Food Which Stops the Spreading of Kidney Cancers Cells in Vitro
"Let foods be your medicine and let medicines be your food", using foods as the medication has been a dream of many scholars and scientists over the past many centuries.
In order to achieve these, consumption of whole food medicine must accompany with moderate exercise, change of diet and lifestyle.
Asparagus may be a potential product used for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma caused by recurrent abnormal chromosomes in gene and reciprocal gene expression, some scientists suggested.
Kidney cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular and disorder cell growth arose first at kidney lining tissue before invading to the deep layers of the .kidney.
At the advanced stage of kidney cancer, the malignant cells can travel a distance away from the kidney to infect other healthy tissue and organs, through blood and fluid circulation.
The exact causes of kidney cancer are unknown. Researchers also do not know why, people with the same gene inherited from the same parents, some are susceptible to the onset of the disease, while other off-springs do not.
However, researchers do not that certain risk factors such as smoking obesity, chemical exposure, gender and family history are some the prevalent risk factor that can manifest the onset of kidney cancer.
Long-term intake of certain medicines such as diuretics and analgesic pain pills, such as aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen and medical conditions such as advanced kidney disease and hypertension are associated with kidney cancer develops.
Furthermore, according to the information provided by the American Cancer Society, people born with the mutation of a gene (FH) linked to hereditary leiomyoma and the SDHB and SDHD genes are also at a higher risk to the cancer onset.
Asparagus is a flowering plant belonging to species of the genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, and northwest Germany, northern Africa, and western Asia.
The delicious plant has been used from early times as a vegetable and medicine, because of its delicate flavor and diuretic properties.
According to the Banaras Hindu University, asparagus racemosus leaf extract inhibits growth UOK 146 renal cell carcinoma through cytotoxic activity and downgraded the process of genes responsible for the proliferation of the UOK146 cell line.
Dr. Verma SP, the lead author said, " Evidence of antiproliferative effect, PRCC-TFE3(recurrent abnormal chromosomes in gene and reciprocal gene expression) fusion transcript inhibition and static anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators(BAX0 level clearly indicate that AR extract provides or elicits an apoptosis-independent anticancer effect on RCC cells by some specific mechanism of regulation"
Renal cell carcinoma (Kidney cancer/renal cells) is a type of kidney cancer caused by malignant cells of the lining of the tubules in the kidney. It tends first to spread via the bloodstream and the second tumor generally found in the lung, but it may also spread to lymph nodes and other organs as well.
Shatavarins (containing shatavarin IV) isolated from the roots of Asparagusracemosus exerted anti-cancer properties, in vivo against numbers of cancer cell lines, including A-498 (human kidney carcinoma) cell lines.
Oral administration of shatavarin to tumor-bearing mice at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight for 10 days,, inhibited tumor cell volume and increased non-cancer cell count, through its potent cytotoxicity, compared to the untreated mice of the EAC control group.
The herbal decode also restored the normal expression of red (RBC) and white blood cell (WBC) counts and hemoglobin (Hb) concentration which are altered in patients with renal cell cancer.
There is no doubt that Asparagus has exhibited significant anticancer activity in both in vitro and in vivo experimental models but further multi and large size studies are necessary to confirm this potency.
However, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of asparagus anti-kidney cancer possibilities.

Beware of Drug Interaction of Green tea and Green Tea Extract, Scientists Warn
Green may have processed a drug interaction property that inhibits the effect of conventional medicine, some scientists suggested.
Drug interactions are the greatest concern of some scientists, particularly in the pharmaceutical community as these effects can potentially reduce the desired effects for the treatment of certain diseases.
Intake of some drugs together, can reduce the absorption or increase the metabolism or elimination of other drugs treatment potential.
Some drugs interaction can cause an allergic reaction from skin rash and itching to a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction.
If you are taking some drugs for the treatment of certain diseases, please make sure that you know some may interact with the others.
The Havard health in the article "7 things you can do to avoid drug interactions"(4) suggested that you
1. Know why you are taking each medication
2. Know how to take the drug
3. Fill all your prescriptions at the same pharmacy
4. Are suspicious of supplements
5. Go easy on grapefruit juice
6. Limit intake of alcohol
7. Talk to your pharmacist
Green tea is a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.
In the review the summarizes published in vitro, animal, and clinical studies investigating the effects of green tea (Camellia sinensis) extract and associated catechins on drug-metabolizing enzymes and drug transporters, researchers at the Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz University, Al-Kharj suggested that
* Green tea extract and its main catechin, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate, to varying degrees, inhibit the activity of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes of CYP1A1, CYP1A2, CYP2B6, CYP2C8, CYP2C9, CYP2D6, and CYP3A4. UGT1A1 and UGT1A4 but not the major cytochrome P450 enzyme, in vitro
Where cytochrome P450 enzymes have a unique function in metabolizing potentially toxic compounds, including drugs and products of endogenous metabolism.
* A clinical study, the organic anion transporting polypeptide 1A1 transporter with the potential role of liver transporters and bile acids is also inhibited by (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate while P-glycoprotein, the multidrug resistance protein 1 (MDR1) is unaffected
These results suggested that patients should be cautious that consumption of significant amounts of green tea beverages or green tea extract may interact with the substrates of organic anion transporting polypeptide as mentioned above.
Further to investigate the effects of green tea extract (GTE) and (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) on the pharmacokinetics of a non-selective hydrophilic β-blocker nadolol, which is reported to be a substrate for several drug transporters and is not metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes launched a study o the. male Sprague-Dawley rats.
The tested animals were given GTE (400 mg/kg), EGCG (150 mg/kg) or saline (control) by oral gavage, 30 min before a single intragastric administration of 10 mg/kg nadolol.
At the end of the experiment, researchers showed that
* Pretreatment with GTE resulted in marked reductions in the maximum concentration (Cmax) and area under the time-plasma concentration curve (AUC) of nadolol by 85% and 74%, respectively, compared with control.
* EGCG alone significantly reduced Cmax and AUC of nadolol.
* The amounts of nadolol excreted into the urine were decreased by pretreatments with GTE and EGCG, while the terminal half-life of nadolol was not different among groups.
These results suggest that the coadministration with green tea catechins, particularly EGCG, causes a significant alteration in the pharmacokinetics of nadolol, possibly through the inhibition of its intestinal absorption mediated by uptake transporters.
Taken all together, green tea, green tea extract (GTE) and (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) can interact with the drug-metabolizing enzymes and drug transporters including nadolol.

Strawberry, the Delicious Fruit Which Processes Anti Colon Cancer Potential, Scientists Found
Strawberry, a delicious fruit may have a profound effect in the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, some studies suggested.
Colon cancer is a chronic and medical condition characterized by abnormal cell growth which starts in the lining of colonic tissue. At the advanced stage, the cancerous cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organ through blood and fluids circulation.
According to to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, colon cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States. In 2018, approximately, over 97,000 new cases the cancer are diagnosed, causing about 50,630 deaths.
Early diagnosed with colon cancer have an over 90% of 5 years survival rate.
The exact causes of colon cancer are unknown. However, researchers suggested that chronic inflammation of the intestines such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease and genetic mutation inherited from the parents are some prevalent major risk factors.
Furthermore, age, gender, people with polyps on the inner wall of the colon or rectum, personal and family history, poor diet, and unhealthy lifestyle are also associated to the increased risk of the onset of the disease.
Dr. Junga Lee, the lead scientist in the study "Diet and Lifestyle in Colorectal Cancer Survivors" wrote, "Lifestyle factors that include obesity, physical activity, and diet are emerging as potential critical elements in improving colorectal cancer survival outcomes". and "The association between colorectal cancer mortality and modifiable lifestyle factors is growing in evidence" and
"Changes in individual health behaviors both before and after a diagnosis of colorectal cancer may improve outcomes of survivors. Several studies have indicated that maintaining a normal weight, participating in regular physical activity, and eating a healthy diet may be important preventative steps leading to improve survival outcomes".
These results suggested that a healthy diet accompanied by an active lifestyle not only can prevent the risk of colon cancer but also can increase the survival of people who already are infected by the disease.
In the early onset of cancer, patients may not experience any symptoms. However, if you have symptoms of the change in your bowel habits that lasts longer than a month, accompanied by rectal bleeding or blood in your stool and persistent abdominal discomfort, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of colon cancer.
Strawberry is a genius of Fragaria × ananassa, belonging to the family Roseaceae. The fruits have been grown all over the world with a suitable climate for commercial profits and for health benefits.
Chemicals constituents
The major chemical compounds include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin.
In the evaluate the recent discovery that ellagitannins (ETs), a class of hydrolyzable tannins found in some fruits and nuts, including strawberry may have beneficial effects against colon cancer, researchers at the University of Rhode Island launched an investigation to study whether, the efficacy of the ETs was a result from its function on ETs hydrolyzing the release ellagic acid (EA) and was converted by gut microbiota to urolithin A (UA; 3,8-dihydroxy-6H-dibenzopyran-6-one) type metabolites, which may persist in the colon through enterohepatic circulation.
On a human 293T cell line, using a luciferase reporter of canonical Wnt pathway-mediated transcriptional activation, researchers found that ETs isolated from strawberry= 20.5% GAE exerts a significant effect in inhibiting Wnt signaling in alternating healthy cells DNA transcript, the early sign of the onset of colon cancer.
These results suggested that strawberry with abundant bioactive compound ellagitannins (ETs) has a potential against colon carcinogenesis through gut microbiota.
On human colon cancer (CaCo-2) cells, according to the Scottish Crop Research Institute, strawberry extracts of EC 50 values in the range of 25-40 microg/(mL of phenols) demonstrated strong activity against cancer cells proliferation.
Further analysis also found that The anthocyanin-rich fraction in the strawberry extract is considerably less effective than the original extract, whereas the antiproliferative activity is retained in the tannin-rich fraction. such ad ETs.
Additionally, in the examine the hypothesis of consumption of berry fruits, including strawberries ( Fragaria x ananassa Duch.), may have beneficial effects against oxidative stress-mediated diseases such as cancer, researchers found that all 10 phenolics compound isolated from strawberry ( cyanidin-3-glucoside ( 1), pelargonidin (2), pelargonidin-3-glucoside (3), pelargonidin-3-rutinoside (4), kaempferol (5), quercetin (6), kaempferol-3-(6'-coumaroyl)glucoside) (7), 3,4,5-trihydroxyphenyl-acrylic acid (8), glucose ester of ( E)- p-coumaric acid (9), and ellagic acid) display a significantly inhibitory activity against human colon cancer cell antiproliferation, by the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) and luminescent ATP cell viability assays, respectively, through the compounds antioxidant and antiproliferative activities.
Dr. Zhang Y, the lead researchers after taking into account co and confounders said, "This study adds to the growing body of data supporting the bioactivities of berry fruit phenolics and their potential impact on human health".
The findings suggested that people in the higher risk of colon cancer may want to add 1 or 2 portions of strawberry into their daily diet for preventive measure.
Taken all together, strawberry processed high levels of phenolics compound and ellagitannins (ETs) may be considered a functional food in reducing the risk and treatment of colon cancer.

Green Tea And Its Bioactive Polyphenols Which inhibits Fibromyalgia Caused by Sleep Disturbance
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced onset, progression and treatment of fibromyalgia caused by sleep disturbance, some scientists suggested.
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by muscle and soft tissue pain affecting over 10 million (3.6% of the population) people in the US alone.
Sleep disturbances are the symptoms of physical, mental, and spiritual problems. The major causes of sleeplessness and insomnia.
Insomnia, a short-term sleep disturbance affects about 30% of adults and chronic insomnia by 10%, according to the statistic provided by the American Sleep Association.
Some researchers suggested that long-term untreated sleep disturbance is a major cause of stroke and heart disease. Dr. Dae Lim Koo, the lead author in the explanation of some risk factor of stroke, wrote, "Any causes of sleep curtailment or fragmentation such as sleep restriction, sleep apnea, insomnia, periodic limb movements during sleep, and shift work, not only impair cardiovascular restoration but also impose a stress on the cardiovascular system" and "Sleep disturbances have been reported to play a role in the development of stroke and other cardiovascular disorders"
Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.
In the study of sleep disturbance that causes fibromyalgia, Dr. Choy EH suggested that patients with fibromyalgia demonstrated a reduced short-wave sleep and abnormal α-rhythms, suggestive of wakefulness during non-REM (rapid eye movement) sleep compared to the healthy individuals according to the observation of polysomnography.
Furthermore, in healthy participants, the study indicated that sleep deprivation can also cause fibromyalgia-like symptoms such as myalgia, tenderness, and fatigue and suggested that sleep dysfunction might be not only a consequence of pain.
These results showed a strongly correlated condition of sleep disturbance and initiation of chronic fibromyalgia if sleep disorders are left untreated for a prolonged period of time.
Moreover, according to the presentation, long time effect of sleep disturbance may influence alter the pathophysiology of the central nervous system in abnormal pain processing and central sensitization, according to the observation of the neuroimaging of patients with fibromyalgia neural activation compared to a lower pressure-pain threshold in the healthy age-matched and gender-matched individuals.
After taking into account confounders, researchers said, " Improving sleep quality can reduce pain and fatigue, further supporting the hypothesis that sleep dysfunction is a pathogenic stimulus of fibromyalgia".
Moreover, green tea bioactive polyphenols (-)-Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in the evaluation of the chick brain under an acute stressful condition-induced sleep disturbance, researchers found that EGCG attenuates stress behavior with special reference to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter with function in sending chemical messages through the brain and the nervous system, and involving in regulating communication between brain cells in stress environment.
Deficiency of is associated with many nervous conditions, including depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders.
Application of EGCG of doses of 50, 100 and 200 microg, intracerebroventricularly exerted a profound effect in suppressing the vocalization which normally occurs during social separation-stress, one of the risk factors of sleep disturbance.
This illustration truly suggested that EGCG reduced the time spent in active wakefulness and induced sleep-like behavior in a dose-dependent manner.
This interaction opinionated that EGCG induced sedation and hypnosis reduced stress hormone production in precipitating sleep distance probably though GABAA receptors in moderation of an acute stress response.
Some researchers suggested that green tea improved symptoms of fibromyalgia by normalizing the levels of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) when came under stress, may have a therapeutic effect in reducing anxiety by relaxing the muscles and the brain. through increasing production of dopamines, serotonin, and alpha waves within the brain in orchestrated the sleep pattern.
These improvements were associated with the interaction of the brain with chemical compounds found in green tea caffeine and L-theanine, suggested by the author.
Taken all together, the findings suggested that green tea and its bioactive polyphenols EGCG and L-theanine may be considered a secondary therapy in reducing risk, progression, and treatment of fibromyalgia caused by a sleep disorder.
However, intake of green tea supplement should be taken with extreme care due to recent reports of acute liver toxicity.

How to Block the Onset of Oral Diseases Naturally
Scientists may have found a phytochemical isolated from carrots which process a significant potential in acting as a nonsurgical aid in the treatment of oral diseases, some studies suggested.
Oral diseases are groups of a medical condition, including dental cavities, periodontal (gum) disease, oral cancer, oral infectious diseases, trauma from injuries, and hereditary lesions.
Some researchers suggested that oral health is an important part of your overall health.
The Ireland dental Health Association in the article Links between oral & general health wrote, "A healthy mouth enables not only nutrition of the physical body, but also enhances social interaction and promotes self-esteem and feelings of well-being" and "Bacteria from the mouth can cause infection in other parts of the body when the immune system has been compromised by disease or medical treatment".
Therefore, maintaining healthy oral health may result in reducing the risk which links the oral disease to other health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
Truly, there are some tips that may help you to prevent the oral health problems, including visiting your dentist one to two times a year for a cleaning and checkup. brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste a minimum of two times per day, replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head every three to four months and floss at least once per day, according to the article published on health Line.
Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belongings to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.
In the aim to find a natural pigment with potential to improve the oral health, researchers at the Swami Devi Dyal Hospital and Dental College conducted an experiment on some of the various classes of pigments in nature, particularly, the pigment lycopene, a red plant pigment found in tomatoes, apricots, guavas, carrots, watermelons, papayas, and pink grapefruits, with tomatoes being the largest contributor to the dietary intake of humans.
Application of lycopene not only exhibits higher antioxidant activity through the ability as singlet oxygen quenching phytochemical, but also exerts a multifunctional role as a nonsurgical aid in the treatment of oral diseases like leukoplakia, oral submucous fibrosis, lichen planus, oral squamous cell carcinoma, and also prevents the destruction of periodontal tissues.
The findings suggested adding 1 or 2 portions of tomatoes into your daily diet can provide absolute protection for your oral health.
Furthermore, in the examine the link between chronic periodontitis (CP), a multifactorial infecto-inflammatory disease caused by the interaction of microbial agents present in the biofilm and oxidative stress (OS), an imbalance of the ratio between free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body, researchers at the Federal University Rio Grande do Sul conducted a randomised, controlled, double-blind or blind studies to evaluate the effect of selected antioxidant
in chronic periodontitis patients.
Antioxidant including in the study are lycopene, vitamin C, vitamin E, capsules with fruits/vegetables/berry.
At the final report of the experiment, researchers indicated that only lycopene and vitamin E demonstrated statistically significant improvement when compared to a control group in terms of periodontal parameters.
These results were observed through oxidative stress pattern throughout the study. As only lycopene and vitamin E showed a reduction of the levels of oxidative stress compared to others.
Moreover, in the evaluation of the effect of lycopene along with routine scaling and root planing in terms of changes in clinical parameters and levels of circulating tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), salivary interleukin 1beta (IL-1ß), and uric acid in chronic periodontitis, researchers launched a randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel design, double-blinded trial in a total of 42 subjects/
Out of 42 subjects were assigned to the test group (n = 21) received 8 mg lycopene/day and placebo group (n = 21) along with adjunctive scaling and root planing. Patients were monitored at baseline and at 2 months after therapy.
At the end of the study, researchers found that test group (Lycopene) showed better results after therapy compared to the placebo group with all assays, including Periodontal parameters regarding plaque index (PI), modified gingival index (MGI), bleeding on probing (BOP).
Although the serum TNF-α value, the pro-inflammatory cytokine was not statistically significant, it, however, showed an improvement compared to the placebo group.
Taken all together, tomato and carrot processed abundant phytochemical lycopene may be an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for prevention and treatment of oral diseases.
Therefore, adding 2 or 3 portions of tomatoes or carrots or intake of lycopene supplement, according to the guideline on a regular basis may give you a perfect breath and oral health.

Papaya Protects Our Body Against Acute and Chronic Inflammatory Diseases
Papaya is found to process anti acute and chronic inflammatory activity that may be considered an adjunct therapy for treatment of several chronic diseases, some scientists suggested
Inflammation is the natural response of the immune system macrophages, the first line of defense in stimulating the production of inflammatory cytokines to protect our body against the infection caused by foreign microorganisms during the acute phase of body damage and injury.
Any inflammation that lasts more than 3 months is considered chronic inflammation.
Truly, the main focus of inflammation is to repair damage and injury.
However, overexpression of inflammatory cytokines in most cases can cause improper healing with scar formation or the death of nearby cells.
Chronic inflammation is the results of the immune system inability to kill off all the microorganism participated in the acute phase of infection, leading to the forming of autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases such as RA and diabetes.
Inflammation is also can be caused by overexpression of free radical compared to the antioxidant enzymes in the body. This result can lead to an imbalance of the ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidant, the major cause of oxidative stress.
Longer-term oxidative stress in the body can also cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, including lipids, proteins, DNA that initiate the development of numbers of chronic diseases, such as atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction.
Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belonging to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico and several centuries
Chemical constituents
Alkaloids, Cardenolides, Anthraquinones, Saponins, Tannin, phenol, flavonoid, anthocyanin, Benzyl glucosinolate, benzylisothiocyanate, 5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-furancarboxaldehyde, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one and 1,3-dihydroxy-2-propanone, etc.(a)
In the reaffirm fruit and vegetables have therapeutic potential as they dampen inflammation with no known side-effects, researchers at the Universiti Putra Malaysia launched an evaluation to examine the effect of papaya on the activity of Th1 (IFN-γ(+) CD4(+))/Th2 (IL-4(+)CD4(+)) T cells play in mediating inflammatory responses.
According to the flow cytometry methods. application of papaya exerted a potential effect in down-regulation of IFN-γ(+) CD4(+) (p=0.03, n=13) in the expression of inflammatory markers and up-regulation of IL-4(+) CD4(+) (p=0.04, n=13) T cells, CD3(+) CD4(+) CD25(+) CD127(-) in productiuon of anti inflammatroy sytokines.
Tregs, regulatory T cells (Tregs) are a specialized subpopulation of T cells that act to suppress the immune response in the production of the proteins related to inflammation, were found after papaya consumption.
In vitro cultures, papaya up-regulates Tregs in male subjects and was significantly associated with suppression of the levels of IL-1β and other inflammatory cytokines.
Dr. Abdullah M., the lead author said, "Papaya consumption may exert an anti-inflammatory response mediated through Tregs and have potential in alleviating inflammatory conditions".
Furthermore, in the reconfirmation of papaya anti-inflammatory effect in patients with sepsis, a serious unbalanced hyperinflammatory condition, researchers found that pretreatment of mangiferin (MF), a natural glucosyl xanthone found in papaya inhibits sepsis-activated mitogen-activated protein kinases and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells signaling, the mediators with function in stimulated the production of in elevated inflammatory cytokines.
Moreover, MF dose-dependently also up-regulates the expression and activity of heme oxygenase (HO)-1 which plays a critical role in the prevention of vascular inflammation in the lung of septic mice, leading to the elimination of the septic lung injury.
The findings suggested that MF attenuates sepsis by up-regulation of HO-1 that protects against sepsis-induced ALI through inhibiting inflammatory signaling and proinflammatory mediators
Taken all together, papaya and its bioactive compound mangiferin (MF) may be an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for treatment in acute and chronic inflammatory diseases.

Green Tea and its Bioactive Polyphenols Suppress the Onset and Progression of Osteoporosis, Medline Studies Find
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing the onset, progression, and treatment of osteoporosis, some scientists suggested.
Osteoporosis is a chronic condition characterized by progression in the reduction of bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue and considered a major health problem in both elderly men and women.
The diseases also affect all bone in the body, including the bones of the spine, hip, and wrist
Scientists as of today do not know the exact causes of osteoporosis. However, they do know that certain factors are associated with the onset and progression of the disease.
Osteoporosis is the common disease among the elderly, probably due to the aging effect that induces nutrition deficiency such as
* Vitamin D insufficiency and reduced calcium absorption,
* Reduced hormone production, the drop of estrogen levels after menopause, can speeds up bone loss.
* Reduced production of bone mass and increased bone reabsorption.
These results suggested that osteoporosis can make bone more fragile and easier to break. In elderly, osteoporosis can be dangerous, as fractures can cause prolonged immobility, and required a longer healing process.
Some researchers suggested that fractures in the older population are the most common cause of blood clots or pneumonia, both of which can have fatal consequences.
Long-term use of certain medicines, such as anti-seizure drug Glucocorticoids and medical conditions such as kidney disease, Cushing's syndrome, and an overactive thyroid or parathyroid, can also increase the risk of osteoporosis.
Dr. Stephen P Tuck, the lead author in the study Osteoporosis in men said, "The incidence of osteoporotic fractures in elderly men, just as in aged women, increases exponentially with age; the rise in men, however, is some 5–10 years later than in women. Up to 50% of male osteoporosis have no identifiable etiology; however elderly males have a much higher likelihood of having an identifiable secondary cause than younger men".
Truly, both male and female share the same conditions of the onset of osteoporosis, but the onset of the disease in men is about 10 years later, compared to a woman in the same age.
Interestingly, in the observation of hip fracture in the aging population, Dr. Eric Orwoll, a physician-researcher who studies osteoporosis at Oregon Health and Science University wrote, “A third of all hip fractures occur in men, yet the problem of osteoporosis in men is frequently downplayed or ignored.”
Green tea is a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.
In the study to evaluate the effects of ingestion of green tea and green tea bioactive compounds in mitigating bone loss and risk of osteoporotic fractures in both elderly women and men, researchers found that the applications exert significant activities in reducing the onset of osteoporosis, through their antioxidants and initiation of the production of natural antioxidant in the body such as glutathione and enzymes (e.g., catalase and superoxide dismutase) in inhibiting the levels of ROS that facilitate the chain reaction.
Truly, the overexpression of free radicals has been associated with the change in the balance between activities of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, leading to osteoclasts in destroying the calcified tissue and inducing bone remodeling.
These results demonstrated that green tea and its bioactive components exhibit a significant decrease in the risk of fracture by improving bone mineral density and preventing free radicals in damage the bone-forming osteoblasts while suppressing osteoclastic activities.
Moreover, in the review of the effect of green tea and its bioactive components on bone health, researchers indicated that the ingestions display an impressive osteoprotective impact on bone mass and microarchitecture in various bone loss models associated with aging, sex hormone deficiency, and chronic inflammation.
The implication of reduced onset and progression of osteoporosis in the aging population due to sex hormone deficiency may be attributed to green tea and its bioactive compound in increasing the levels of osteocalcin, a bone formation marker, decreasing serum of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), a bone resorption marker and improving the body in the absorption of calcium.
In fact, the serum levels of osteocalcin (OC) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) are considered effective measurements in the rate of bone turn over in patients with osteoporosis.
Interestingly, application of green tea and its bioactive compound also is found to modulate the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in the regulation of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, through inhibiting the production of C-reactive protein (CRP) in the liver in initiating inflammation and reducing levels of interleukin-1 and 6(IL-1-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), the sensitive markers of systemic inflammation.
These differentiation were supported by the study in the evaluation of the efficacy of green tea polyphenols (GTPs) at mitigating bone loss and microstructure deterioration along with related mechanisms in 40 androgen-deficient aged male rats, a model of male osteoporosis, randomly assigned to received A 2 (sham vs. orchidectomy) × 2 (no GTP and 0.5% GTP in drinking water) for 16 weeks.
At the end of experiment, researchers found that rats treated with GTP demonstrate an increased serum osteocalcin concentrations, bone mineral density, and trabecular volume, number, and strength of femur; trabecular volume and thickness and bone formation in both the proximal tibia and periosteal tibial shaft, and decreased eroded surface in the proximal tibia and endocortical tibial shaft; and increased liver glutathione peroxidase activity.
The findings indicated a strong implication of green tea polyphenols in decreasing cortical and trabecular bone loss and increasing both bone density by stimulating the overexpression of bone formation and reducing bone resorption via antioxidant capacity.
Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered functional foods in ameliorating early onset, progression and combined with standard medicine for treatment of osteoporosis.
However, intake of green tea supplement should be taken with extreme care due to recent reports of acute liver toxicity.
