Fennel, The Natural Anti Skin Aging Functional Food, Scientists Show

Fennel may have a potential and positive effect in reduced stress implication, some scientists suggested.

Skin aging is a process involved a complex biological process induced by a combination of endogenous or intrinsic and exogenous or extrinsic factors, that can not be stopped or prevented, characterizing by features such as wrinkling, loss of elasticity, laxity, and rough-textured appearance

However, by looking after your skin daily, you can delay the process.

The endogenous or intrinsic factors that influence skin aging, include genetics, cellular metabolism, hormone, and metabolic processes.

And, the exogenous or extrinsic factors that may cause the early onset of skin aging include chronic light exposure, pollution, ionizing radiation, chemicals, toxins.

Furthermore, Dr. Shoubing Zhang, the lead author in the study of Fighting against Skin Aging, The Way from Bench to Bedside, wrote, " This aging process is accompanied with phenotypic changes in cutaneous cells as well as structural and functional changes in extracellular matrix components such as collagen and elastin".

These results suggested that skin aging is not only caused by the complex system involving intrinsic and extrinsic factors but also some factors have yet been discovered.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the carrot family, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In the findings the natural ingredient that has a potential effect in protecting the skin against aging, researchers launched an investigation to test whether formulation containing 4% concentrated seed extract of F. vulgare produce the antiaging effect when it was applied.

After an assessment of the data collected during the experiment, researchers found that the formulation shows notable antiaging effect with supporting experimental data related to skin moisture and transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

And, the texture parameter energy showed that the formulation possesses potential antiaging effects.

Additionally, in the study to test the effects of the application of herbal against UVB-induced photoaging in normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDFs) in vitro, researchers showed that mice treated with fennel exert a strong antioxidant and inflammatory activities in significantly increase production of collagen, elastin and TGF-β1 levels, while blocking the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) production in UVB irradiation,

Elastin is a highly elastic protein in connective tissue that was found to return skin to its original position when it is pressed.

TGF-β1 is a cytokine with function in protecting the skin against inflammation caused by UVB-induced photoaging.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a group of enzymes that are responsible for the structural component of connective tissue degradation,

Furthermore, fennel dose-dependently also inhibited the production of ROS and enhanced the expression of cytoprotective antioxidants produced by the host tissue, including GSH.

These results suggested that fennel may be a potential botanical agent for the treatment of skin damage induced by UV irradiation.

Moreover, the study to explore the fennel anti-skin aging effect after testing subjects were exposed to ultraviolet radiations (UVR) to induce skin sunburn, the condition that produces harmful entities, reactive oxygen species (ROS) also suggested, creams containing fennel are found to be loaded with antioxidants to quench ROS, leading to photo-protective effects.

Taken all together, fennel containing high amounts of antioxidants may be considered a functional food for treatment of skin damage caused by sun exposure and protection of youthful skin against an imbalance of the ratio of antioxidants and free radicals as well as maintaining the skin moisture and preventing the transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
