Neurodegenerative diseases are a class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons in the brain caused by several mechanisms, including toxicity and oxygen deficiency.
Most common disease associated with neurodegenerative diseases is dementia, a cluster of conditions included Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s disease, leading to a negative influence the body's functioning, including balance, movement, talking, breathing, and heart function.
There is no single cause of the progressive death of brain neurons. Epidemiologically, genetic preposition, medical conditions, such as alcoholism, brain cancer or a stroke in the brain are some of the most common prevalent factors found in patients with neurological diseases.
Age-related macular degeneration is a medical condition that causes irreversible blurring of the central vision in people over age 60.
The elderly at the early stage of age-related macular degeneration is asymptomatic. However, some patients may experience symptoms of slightly blurred central vision. Most cases of the early stage of AMD were diagnosed during routine eye health examinations.
Over time, age-related macular degeneration may affect the vision including the reading as the blurred area increase in size.
The advanced age-related macular degeneration has been found to induce irreversible blindness and visual impairment, according to epidemiological studies.
According to statistics, approximately 11 million people in the US have some form of age-related macular degeneration. The risk of getting advanced age-related macular degeneration increases from 2% for those ages 50-59 to nearly 30% for those over the age of 75.
Age-related macular degeneration can be classified into 2 types
* The common AMD is the dry form caused by the gradual degeneration of the central retinal tissues, affecting 90% of patient s with AMD. Some patients with the dry form of AMD have been found to develop into the wet form over time.
* The wet form of AMD is caused by the breaking of capillary under the macula, accounting for only 10% of AMD.
Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.
On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of degenerative diseases, researchers compared the effects of dietary n-3 Fatty Acid, α-Tocopherol, Zinc, vitamin D, vitamin C, and β-carotene on age-related macular degeneration.
According to the results of a brief-type self-administered questionnaire of the case-control study that reports the association between nutrient intake and neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) from of 161 neovascular AMD cases from two university hospitals and 369 population-based control subjects in Japan,
* Low intakes of n-3 fatty acid, α-tocopherol, zinc, vitamin D, vitamin C, and β-carotene were associated with neovascular AMD.
In other words, low levels of serum of tocopherols were associated with increased risk of AMD.
* There was no association with retinol or cryptoxanthin intake and neovascular AMD.
These results were adjusted based on smoking history, age, sex, chronic disease history, supplement use, and alcohol consumption
Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered an adjunct therapy in the treatment of AMD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
