Intestinal mucosa processes a single cell layer of epithelial cells with a function to protect the intestine against invasive pathogens and ensure the function of intestinal in nutrients adsorption.
Biologically, the intestinal protection of the intestinal mucosal barrier function is associated with
*Bile and gastric acid produced the liver and stomach that only aid digestion but kills microorganism
* Defensins secretory epithelial cells with a function to protect the intestines against bacteria, fungi and many enveloped and nonenveloped viruses.
* Lysozyme is an enzyme that protects the intestine by causing the destruction of the cell walls of certain bacterias.
* Regenerating islet-derived protein 3 gammas (Reg3γ), an antibacterial lectin is a type of antimicrobial peptides found in the gut epithelial Paneth cells with a function to prevent microorganisms from coming into contact with the epithelial layer.
In other words, the intestinal mucosal barrier plays an essential role in the separation of the inside of the body from the outside environment, particularly in harmful microorganisms.
Dr. Oshima T the lead scientist in the examination of light junctions (TJs), the most important component for the construction of a constitutive barrier of epithelial cells that regulates the permeability of the barrier by tightly sealing the cell-cell junctions, wrote, "Gastrointestinal diseases including reflux esophagitis, inflammatory bowel disease, functional gastrointestinal disorders, and cancers may be regulated by these molecules, and disruption of their functions leads to chronic inflammatory conditions and chronic or progressive disease".
And, "regulation of the barrier function of epithelial cells by regulating the expression and localization of TJ proteins is a potential new target for the treatment of these diseases".
More precisely, by improving the intestinal mucosal barrier function, diseases associated with the gastrointestinal tract may be preventable.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the protection of the intestinal mucosal barrier, researchers examined the effects of curcumin extensive pharmacological effects, on gastrointestinal diseases.
According to the analysis, curcumin exerted protective effects of the intestinal mucosal barrier through multiple pathways.
More precisely, curcumin protected the tissues of the intestinal mucosal barrier by
* By reducing the production of proinflammatory cytokines in orchestrating cell damage.
* By inhibiting the oxidative stress caused by overexpression of free radicals in facilitating the onset of chronic inflammation in the initiation of intestinal mucosal damage.
* By reducing levels of bacteria in the induction of infection that may weaken the function of the intestinal mucosal barrier.
Moreover, curcumin also protected the cells of intestinal mucosa against apoptosis.
Additional differentiation of the tested assays, researchers also found that curcumin also balances the ratio of gut microbiota associated with the regulation of intestinal microecology and intestinal immune response which plays a critical role in enhancing the intestinal mucosal barrier function.
Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered supplements for the improvement of intestinal mucosal barrier function, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Alliin Gobbles Up Plagues Against the Onset of Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis is a medical condition induced arterial narrowing due to the accumulation of plague that weakens the arterial wall.
Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of heart disease and stroke in the Western world, depending on the location of oxygenated rich blood flow blockage.
Plague is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances in the blood.
According to the epidemiological studies, diseases associated with atherosclerosis include coronary heart disease (plaque in arteries in or leading to the heart), angina (chest pain from reduced blood flow to the heart muscle), carotid artery disease (plaque in neck arteries supplying blood to the brain), and peripheral artery disease (plaque in arteries of the extremities, especially the legs).
According to the statistics provided by the CDC, coronary heart disease (CHD) caused by atherosclerosis is the most common type of heart disease, that kills over 370,000 people annually.
Every year about 735,000 Americans has a heart attack. Of these, 525,000 are a first heart attack and 210,000 happen in people who have already had a heart attack
Although there are many risk factors that increase the risk of plaque accumulation, some researchers suggested people who follow the high-fat diet without injection of an adequate amount of fruits and vegetables are at a higher risk of atherosclerosis.
Dr. Zhao Y, the lead scientist in the team of cardiovascular disease at the Chinese PLA General Hospital wrote, "Coronary artery disease has a significant genetic predisposition, which mainly results from atherosclerosis".
And, "(Pig fed with high-fat diet) At 6 months, plaque lesions appeared in the abdominal aorta and iliac artery, while at 8 months, they appeared in the coronary artery. At 12 months, atherosclerotic lesions could be found in all major arteries, while lipid core, cholesterol precipitation, and calcium deposition appeared in the most serious sites".
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
With an aim to find potential treatment for atherosclerosis, a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, researchers evaluated the capacity of Allium ursinum (wild garlic) leaf lyophilisate (WGLL; alliin content: 0.261%) to mitigate cardiovascular damage in hypercholesterolemic rabbits.
Selected tested New Zealand rabbits incldued in the study were divided into three groups: (i) cholesterol-free rabbit chow (control); (ii) rabbit chow containing 2% cholesterol (hypercholesterolemic, HC); (iii) rabbit chow containing 2% cholesterol + 2% WGLL (hypercholesterolemic treated, HCT); for eight weeks.
According to the differentiation at the zero- and eight-week time points, WGLL treatment protects the cardio functioning by mediating the increase in fractional shortening, right ventricular function; peak systolic velocity; tricuspid annular systolic velocity in live animals.
Furthermore, WGLL improved aortic and coronary flow.
In other words, WGLL exerted cardiovascular protective activity by promoting the function of ventricles in blood circulation via regulating the blood pressure.
Moreover, according to the Western blot analysis, revealed WGLL-associated increases in HO-1 protein associated with reduced cardio oxidative stress and decreases in SOD-1 protein involved oxygen metabolism.
Interestingly, WGLL also expressed a significant decrease in aortic atherosclerotic plaque coverage, plasma ApoB, an important component of many lipoproteins involved in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. and the activity of LDH and CK (creatine kinase) in plasma.
Particularly, the chemical compound also inhibited the plasma LDL.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "The results clearly demonstrate that WGLL has complex cardioprotective effects, suggesting future strategies for its use in prevention and therapy for atherosclerotic disorders".
Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bromelain Inhibits the Parameters Associated with The Onset of Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas, named after German physician Alois Alzheimer.
Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing cognitive modalities severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal.
According to statistic, over 25 million people in the world today are affected by dementia and most are suffering from Alzheimer's disease. In Canada, approximately, over half a million Canadians living with dementia accompanied by the 25,000 new cases diagnosed every year.
Believe or not, in 2016, dementia had cost Canada over $10 billion, including the health-care system and out-of-pocket caregiver costs.
Epidemiologically, cigarette smoking, midlife high blood pressure and obesity, diabetes, and cerebrovascular lesions and psychosocial factors (eg, high education, active social engagement, physical exercise, and mentally stimulating activity) are associated with prevalent risk of AD developing.
Some researchers in the evaluated the increased AD in the older adults in the Western world over the past few decades may be correlated to the promotion of the high-fat diet.
Dr. Peter Thériault, the lead researcher wrote, "WD promotes systemic inflammation by increasing the levels of blood-circulating monocytes and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 production, which is accompanied by an augmentation of oxidized-low density lipoprotein levels in blood circulation".
And, "At the blood-brain barrier (BBB), WD potentiates the age-induced increase of Aβ 1-40 accumulation and exacerbates the oxidative stress, specifically in cerebral microvasculature. These effects were accompanied by the dysfunction of pericytes, thus altering BBB functionality without compromising its integrity".
In other words, if you are high-diet follow, you are at high risk of AD developing.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, researchers investigated the ability of bromelain, a plant cysteine protease derived from pineapple stems interaction with synthetic Aβ42 monomers and oligomers.
According to the tested assays, bromelain protected the neuron successfully by degrading Aβ42 monomers and low and high molecular weight oligomers.
Examined the effects of bromelain preparations of 3 and 6 mU added to the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the levels of Aβ42 monomers and oligomers were significantly reduced, compared to that od the same standard Aβ42 preparations incubated in CSF without bromelain
Furthermore, the concentration of bromelain incubations with 0.1, 0.5, and 1 mU/ml were not toxic to the central nervous system.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "these results represent an important insight into the action of bromelain on Aβ42 oligomers, suggesting its potential use in the therapy of AD".
In order to know more information about bromelain anti-Alzheimer's disease activity, researchers examined a beta-degrading activity of diverse alpha 2-macroglobulin (alpha 2-M)-proteinase including trypsin, alpha-chymotrypsin, and bromelain (125)I-A beta 1--42.
The complex showed a strong degradation of (125)I-A beta 1--42.
In Ex vivo, oral administration of high doses of proteinases displayed an enhanced degradation of (125)I-A beta 1--42 in the blood of volunteers.
In other words, the complexes exhibited a significant A beta catabolism, thus reducing the risk of developing AD by preventing A beta accumulation in brain and vasculature.
Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Tomato, A Potential and Natural Prevention and Treatment of Cancer
Cancer is a class of chronic and medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissues of the body.
Cancer can be classified into
* Primary cancer or original cancer is a tumor at the original site where it first arose where tumor progression began and proceeded to yield a cancerous mass.
* Secondary metastasis is tumor spread from primary cancer.
Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the organs' tissues. For example, breast cancer starts in the tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.
Under normal circumstance, cell growth is a natural process without even notice, every day millions of cell growth to replace millions of dead cells and to keep our body in balance and healthy.
Sometimes, acceleration of cells growth is necessary to prevent further damage to the body tissues and organs, such as cut, injure, etc., but after fulfilling their purposes, the growth of cells are back to a normal rate again due to our body growth inhibitors.
However, in cancer, mutated cells can grow indefinitely by accelerating cell division rates or inhibiting normal controls on the system, such as cell cycle arrest or programmed cell death, leading to the formation of cell mass or tumor.
The exact causes of cancer are unidentified. Researchers can not explain why people with the same health conditions and family history in the same family, some are prone to cancer development while others do not.
According to the statistic, In 2018, approximately 1,735,350 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the United States. The diseases also cause the death of 609,640 Americans in the same year.
Believe it or not, cancer mortality is higher among men than women (196.8 per 100,000 men and 139.6 per 100,000 women), according to the National Cancer Institute.
Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongs to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cancer with no side effects researchers examined several HDACi of natural and dietary origin such as tomatoes against cancer developing.
Where histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) regulated the activity of histone deacetylase enzymes (HDACs) has been used in cancer treatment either alone or in combination with other chemotherapeutic drugs/radiotherapy.
According to the differential, HDACi exhibited antitumor effect by the activation of cell cycle arrest, induction of apoptosis and autophagy, angiogenesis inhibition.
Furthermore, the cancer inhibition of HDACi is also found in increased reactive oxygen species generation that causes oxidative stress, and mitotic cell death in cancer cells.
In order to reveal more information about tomatoes anti-cancer property, scientists investigated lycopene loaded whey protein isolate nanoparticles (LYC-WPI-NPs) anti-cancer activity.
The percent lycopene entrapment of prepared LYC-WPI-NPs was estimated in the range to 50 and 65%.
The WPI-NPs was found to enhance the oral bioavailability and absorption of lycopene by controlling its release from nano-formulation and lymphatic pathways.
Moreover, lycopene improved the biopharmaceutical attributes of lycopene and demonstrated prophylactic anticancer activity, decrease tumor proliferation and increased the survival rate of treated animals, in the form of loaded protein nanoparticles.
Taken altogether, tomatoes processed high amounts of lycopene may be considered a functional food for the treatment of cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric Effects on Skin Health
Skin, a large external organ in the human body is the outer layer, with a total area of about 20 square feet which protect the internal organs, bones, and tissues against damage.
The skin processes 3 main layers
* Epidermis is the outer most layer of the skin providing a barrier against infection from environmental pathogens. The outer layers also regulate the amount of water released from the body through transepidermal water loss.
* Dermis is the second layer of skin, containing blood capillaries, nerve endings, sweat glands, hair follicles, and other structures.
* The bottom layer is the subcutaneous fat which has been found to process the protective effect against the dangers of visceral fat.
Skin health refers to the use of material or agents, including topical and oral herbal remedies with the function to protect the skin cell against the environment harmful substance, including the sun UV light and microbial infection.
Some researchers suggested that by providing enough nutrition to the skin cells we can maintain healthy skin. In other words, macronutrients including carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids and micronutrients such as vitamins and essential minerals all work together to maintain healthy skin.
More precisely, we can maintain healthy skin by eating a healthy diet accompanied by moderate exercise and avoid exposure of skin to harmful substances.
With an aim to find a natural compound for the enhancement of skin health, researchers examined the active component of turmeric, curcumin used medically to treat a variety of dermatologic diseases in traditional medicine.
The search involved the relationship between products containing turmeric, curcumin, and skin health in the medical databases of PubMed and Embase databases found a total of 234 articles with only 18 studies met inclusion criteria.
According to the identified studies, ingestion, topical use, and combined ingestion and topical use showed a statistically significant improvement in skin disease severity in the turmeric/curcumin treatment groups compared with control groups, including conditions of acne, alopecia, atopic dermatitis, facial photoaging, oral lichen planus, pruritus, psoriasis, radiodermatitis, and vitiligo.
Dr. Vaughn AR, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounder wrote on the final report, "Overall, there is early evidence that turmeric/curcumin products and supplements, both oral and topical, may provide therapeutic benefits for skin health".
In order to reveal more information about curcumin in skin protection, researchers investigated the antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties against skin diseases.
According to the tested assays, curcumin exerted protective effects against skin damage caused by chronic ultraviolet B radiation.
Curcumin application also has a strong effect on the protection against skin aging and disorders such as psoriasis, infection, acne, skin inflammation, and skin cancer.
Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered a supplement for skin health with no side effect, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Ginger, the Natural Treatment for Endometriosis, with no Side Effects
Endometriosis is a condition caused by endometrial tissues which grow somewhere in the body instead of in the endometrium. Most cases of endometriosis are in the organs in the pelvic area, including ovaries and fallopian tubes.
Endometriosis also reacts to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building and breaking up tissues and eliminating them through the menstrual period.
According to the statistics provided by the Clinical Center of Niš,
* About 20% of reproductive age women with endometriosis are assymptomatic
* About 55% of women have developed the new onset of severe menstrual cramps
* About 25% of women with sub-fertility (less fertile than a normal couple), depending on the stages of endometriosis.
Endometriosis can be classified into 4 stages
* Minimal stage
The top surface, few in number. Commonly they are found in the inside wall of uterus, ligaments, and ovary, causing a significant reduction in both progesterone and its ratio with 17 beta-oestradiol, luteal dysfunction and abnormal secretory patterns(3). Minimal stage endometriosis may lead to unexplained causes of infertility(2).
* Mild stage
Deeper implants, greater numbers are presented. Commonly found in the same area as a minimal stage, causing worsening of oocyte quality. Mild stage of endometriosis may lead to infertility(4).
* Moderate stage:
Many implants, endometrial cysts are presented, affecting ovary function, and causing scar tissues and adhesion.
* Severe stage:
Intensive peritoneal implants, large endometriomas are presented with dense adhesion.
Conventionally, most cases of endometriosis are treated by pain medicines such as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and hormone therapy such as birth control pills with an aim to reduce pain and improve quality of life, including daily activity.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
Researchers in the urgency to find natural compounds for the treatment of endometriosis with no side effects evaluated the efficacy and safety of acupuncture-moxibustion combined with modified Mojie tablet containing ginger in the prevention of the recurrence of endometriosis (EMS) after laparoscopic surgery.
The study included 120 cases of EMS after laparoscopic surgery, randomly assigned into an acupuncture-moxibustion group, a western medication group, a Chinese medication group and a combined therapy of acupuncture-moxibustion and Chinese medication group (combined therapy group).
Each group containing 30 participants was separated, before treatment, after treatment, in 3 months after treatment and in 6 months after treatment.
In the acupuncture-moxibustion group, acupuncture was applied at Xuehai (SP 10), Sanyinjiao (SP 6) and Guanyuan (CV 4); the isolated moxibustion with ginger was used at Guanyuan (CV 4), once a day, twice a week.
In the western medication group, gestrinone was prescribed for oral administration, 2.5 mg, once a day, twice a week.
In the Chinese medication group, the self-prepared Mojie tablet was prescribed for oral administration.
And, in the combined therapy group, acupuncture, moxibustion and modified Mojie tablet for oral administration were used in combination.
In 3 and 6 months after treatment, the positive rates of EHP-5 score were 0% (0/30) in the combined therapy group and 0% (0/30) in the acupuncture-moxibustion group, compared to the lower significantly than 13.3% (4/30) in the western medication group.
In follow-up stage of 6 months after treatment, according to the abdominal ultrasound examination, there was no recurrence case in the combined therapy group, compared to the lower than 13.3% (4/30) in the western medication group.
According to assays, the serum CA125 detection in the combined therapy group did not find any abnormal case, compared to the lower than 16.7% (5/30) in the western medication group (P < 0.05).
Based on the results, researchers wrote in the final report, "Acupuncture and moxibustion combined with modified Mojie tablet effectively prevent the recurrence of EMS after laparoscopic surgery and improve the life quality of the patients".
Take all together, ginger may be used combined with other traditional medicine and therapies for the prevention and treatment of endometriosis and recurrent endometriosis, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical 3,3'-Diindolylmethane Inhibits Parameters Associated with the Onset of Hyperglycemia
Hyperglycemia is a condition of abnormally high blood sugar in the bloodstream associated with diabetic complications in patients with type 2 diabetes.
In order words, hyperglycemia is a result of the body which isn't properly using or doesn't make the hormone insulin.
Hyperglycemia is also considered a hallmark of patients with type 2 diabetes. Another hallmark is insulin resistance.
The condition occurs mostly due to poor control and management in patients with diabetes such as
a poor diet, physical inactivity choices, symptoms of medicines intake.
Some patients with diabetes also experience symptoms of hyperglycemia due to skipping not taking enough glucose-lowering medication.
Most common symptoms of hyperglycemia are frequent urination, increased thirst, blurred vision, persistent fatigue, and headache.
If you are having some of the aforementioned symptoms, you may have hyperglycemia. Please make sure you check with your doctor to prevent the longer-term untreated complications.
According to the epidemiological studies, untreated or long term persistently hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes has been found to induce serious symptoms such as shortness of breath, confusion, and coma.
3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of hyperglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes, researchers examined the effect of the nutritive phytochemicals, indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and its metabolite, 3, 3'- diindolylmethane (DIM) on oxidative stress developed in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
The study is carried out on the genetically modified mouse (C57BL/6J mice) similar to those of metabolic abnormalities of the human disease after the administration of a high-fat diet (HFD).
Injection of DIM and I3C positively modulated the glucose, insulin, and hemoglobin (Hb), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level, an indication of the hyperglycemically modulatory activities in the tested HFD mice.
Compared to the HFD group, treatment groups showed a decrease in the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH), conjugated dienes (CD associated with oxidative stress in lipid peroxidation.
Futhermore, DIM and I3C also improved the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host observed by the increasing SOD, CAT, GPx levels in the erythrocyte, liver, kidney, and heart.
Levels of free radical scavengers such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and GSH levels are also increased in the plasma, liver, kidney, and heart in diabetic mice.
In other words, DIM and I3C protected diabetic mice against diabetics complications by modulating blood glucose and lipid by balancing the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant in the tested subjects.
Based on the finding, researchers wrote in the final report, "the antioxidant-scavenging action was accelerated in mice treated with DIM than the I3C treatment group which was comparable with the standard drug metformin".
Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of hyperglycemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Contact dermatitis is a skin condition with symptoms of a red, itchy rash caused by direct contact with a substance or an immune overreaction against contact allergens.
Many chemicals and nonchemicals substances have been found to induce such abnormal reactions, including cosmetics, fragrances, jewelry, and plants.
Most cases of contact dermatitis are nonlife-threatening, however, the condition can induce certain discomforts, particularly in people with an allergic reaction to other conditions.
Contact dermatitis can be healed within a week or 2. The condition can be preventable if the cause is identified.
Besides the common symptoms of a red, itchy rash on the skin, some people may experience more serious symptoms including crusting swelling, burning or tenderness skin.
Dr. Imbesi S, the lead scientist in the explanation of the immune involvement of the allergic contact dermatitis wrote, " an inflammatory skin condition due to pro-inflammatory and toxic factors able to activate the skin innate immunity (irritant contact dermatitis) or caused by a T-cell- mediated hypersensitivity reaction (allergic contact dermatitis)".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
In the urgency to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of chronic allergic contact dermatitis with no side effects, researchers examined the bilberry extract (Bilberon-25) in the alleviation of pruritus in a mouse model of chronic allergic contact dermatitis.
The study involved BALB/c mice with chronic allergic contact dermatitis induced by 3 weeks of repeated application of 2,4,6-trinitro-1-chlorobenzene (TNCB) following by the administration of Bilberon-25 orally for 3 weeks after sensitization with TNCB.
During the experiment, administered Bilberon-25 orally significantly attenuated the TNCB-induced increase in scratching behavior, compared to that of dexamethasone.
Both Bilberon-25 and dexamethasone inhibited the ear swelling.
Additional differentiation of the Bilberon-25 efficacy, the action of the herbal remedy inhibited symptoms of chronic allergic contact dermatitis by alleviating T helper cell type 2 (Th2) predominance of the lesional skin.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "Anthocyanins from bilberry might be beneficial for the treatment of chronic pruritus which can occur in patients with inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis".
In order to reveal more information about anthocyanins activity against chronic allergic contact dermatitis, researchers at the Chiba Univ compared the anti-pruritic effect of anthocyanin-rich quality-controlled bilberry extract and anthocyanidin-rich degraded extract in a mouse model of allergic contact dermatitis.
Once again, BALB/c mice with allergic contact dermatitis induced by 4 weeks of repeated application of 2,4,6-trinitro-1-chlorobenzene (TNCB) following by administration of Bilberon-25 orally for 4 weeks.
Compared with nonheated Bilberon-25, the proportion of anthocyanins in heated Bilberon-25 decreased, and the proportion of anthocyanidins was increased in heated-time dependent manner.
Treatment with non-heated Bilberon-25 significantly attenuated the TNCB-induced increased scratching behavior, whereas treatment with 2 h-heated Bilberon-25 did not.
Particularly, 300 μg/mL nonheated Bilberon-25 showed significant inhibition of degranulation in RBL-2H3 mast cells.
The results suggested that the anthocyanin-rich but not anthocyanidin-rich bilberry extract inhibited the skin diseases involving pruritic symptoms, such as chronic allergic contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and rhinitis.
Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanoside may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of symptoms in patients with chronic allergic contact dermatitis, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Whole Food Ginger, A Natural Treatment for Diabetes with No Side Effects
Diabetes is a chronic low-grade inflammatory condition associated with the insufficient insulin entering bloodstream due to the reduced numbers of beta cells in the pancreas or insulin receptor site clogged up by fat or cholesterol.
Beta cells in the pancreas are the endocrine portion of the pancreas, made up 50–70% of the cells in human islets that produce insulin.
Beta cells secret stored insulin in response to the spikes in blood glucose concentrations.
On the other hand, when the blood glucose levels drop, the alpha cells in the pancreas release glucagon in stimulating the liver cells to release glucose into the circulation.
In short, cells in pancreas protect our body system by modulating the levels of blood glucose for the best to our body
Insulin receptor site is a protein that binds to insulin and passes its message into the cell in which the cells convert glucose to energy.
There are many risk factors associated with the risk of diabetes, including diseases associated with insulin resistance such as age, family history, ethnicity diseases associated with insulin resistance such as polycystic ovary syndrome and obesity, physical inactivity, and gestational diabetes.
Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of type 2 diabetes, some researchers suggested that the rapid rise of type 2 diabetes in the Western world may be correlated to the promotion of high-fat diet over past many decades.
Dr. David Hefner, wrote, "The typical Western diet-red meat, high-fat dairy products, refined grains and desserts-may increase your chances for Type 2 diabetes. That's what researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health have found and reported in the Annals of Internal Medicine".
And, "The news isn't particularly shocking but offers a new view on the health risks of a typical Western diet as a whole, rather than simply attacking elements within the diet such as fatty foods. "It's the entirety of the diet that's important," Dr. Frank B. Hu, the study's lead author, was reported as saying in The New York Times".
On finding a potential compound or whole food for the treatment of diabetes with no side effects, researchers analyzed the ginger consumption on glycemic status, lipid profile and some inflammatory markers in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
The double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial included 70 type 2 diabetic patients randomly assigned into ginger group consumed 1600 mg ginger and control group consumed 1600 mg wheat flour placebo daily for 12 weeks.
Ginger showed a significant effect in almost all parameters associated with diabetes including reduced fasting plasma glucose, HbA1C, insulin, HOMA, triglyceride, total cholesterol, CRP and PGE₂ significantly compared with the placebo group (p < 0.05).
However, there were no significant differences in HDL, LDL, and TNFα between two groups (p > 0.05).
PGE₂ and TNFα are hormone and protein involved the production of proinflammatory cytokines.
In other words, ginger protects patients with diabetes against the onset of complications.
Dr. the lead scientist said, "Ginger improved insulin sensitivity and some fractions of lipid profile, and reduced CRP and PGE₂ in type 2 diabetic patients. Therefore ginger can be considered as an effective treatment for the prevention of diabetes complications".
Furthermore, in a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial of 64 patients with DM2 who were assigned to ginger or placebo groups (receiving 2 g/d of each), researchers also found that injection of ginger exerts a strong anti-diabetes activity by significantly lowered the levels of insulin, LDL-C, TG and the HOMA index (3.9 ± 1.09 versus 4.5 ± 1.8; p = 0.002) in comparison to the control group, similar to those of aforementioned study.
Based on the results, researchers suggested, "ginger supplementation improved insulin sensitivity and some fractions of lipid profile in DM2 patients. Therefore it may be considered as a useful remedy to reduce the secondary complications of DM2".
Take all together, ginger may be considered a functional alternative for the prevention of diabetic complications and treatment of diabetes, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Alliin Strengthens the Gut immunity
Gastrointestinal tract microbiome is the community of microorganisms containing micro-organisms including mostly bacterias and some viruses, fungi, and protozoa.
Under normal conditions, the ratio of good and bad microbiomes are balanced.
Believe it or not, our GI-tract harbors one of the most complex and abundant ecosystems colonized by more than 100 trillion microorganisms, including Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes.
Believe it or not, compared to only 23 000 genes in the human genome, the microbiome encodes over three million genes producing thousands of metabolites, which play a critical role in many of the functions of our body.
Dr. Veronica Lazar, the lead scientist in the examined the interaction of gut microbiome and the immune system suggested that
* Gut microbiome has a strong impact to modulate neutrophil migration and function that affects the differentiation of T cell populations into different types of helper cells (Th), respectively.
* Gut microbiome interaction also can trigger antimicrobial responses by stimulating the production of the sIgA production, the first line of defense against pathogens and toxins.
* Gut microbiome interacts with the immune system against the initiation and progression of infectious diseases.
* Balanced gut microbiome protects the intestinal immune responsiveness that associates with the onset of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, inclduing cancer.
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
On findings a potential compound for the improvement of gut microbiota, researchers examined the diet of traditional Asian is similar to the Mediterranean rich of quercetin and alliin on the growth of host and the status of the gut microbiota and colonic epithelial immunity.
According to the tested assays, the alternate consumption of quercetin and alliin significantly increased the rat body weight and reshaped the gut microbiota composition.
In other words, the intake of quercetin and alliin improved the ratio of gut microbiota by enhancing the levels of good bacteria in the colon.
More precisely, quercetin and alliin increased the relative abundance of fecal Firmicutes and Cyanobacteria but decreased that of Bacteroidetes (P < 0.05) and increased the relative abundance of Candidatus Arthromitus, Lactococcus, Geobacillus, and Ruminococcus.
Furthermore, genes linked to gut immunity with higher-level systemic functions of cells, the organism, and the ecosystem were also altered in the rat fed with quercetin and alliin.
The results strongly suggested that the diet of traditional Asian is similar to the Mediterranean that not only promotes gut health but also enhanced gut immunity.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "the alternate consumption of quercetin and alliin in traditional Asian diet can contribute beneficial metabolic effects by optimizing gut microbiota and altering the immunologic function of colonic epithelial cells".
Taken altogether, alliin used alone or combined with another phytochemical may be considered supplements for the improvement of the gut immunity, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical 3,3'-Diindolylmethane, the Natural Treatment for Breast cancer in Vivo and Human Studies
Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.
Breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) is a medical condition characterized by irregular cells growth in the tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.
There are also rare cases that breast cancer started in other areas of the breast.
In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in women in the US and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.
Breast cancer is first noticed as a painless lump in the breast or armpit and most often discovered by the women themselves.
In some cases, breast cancer can also be noticed by the woman partner or during the doctor a routine physical exam.
In the early stage of breast cancer, patients may experience symptoms of the lump (mass) in the breast. and in the armpit (lymph nodes), nipple discharge, inverted or retracted nipple, scaly or pitted skin on nipple, persistent tenderness of the breast and unusual breast pain or discomfort.
If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor right the way to rule out the possibility. Breast cancer diagnosed in the early stage have a 5-year survival rate of 100%.
However, at the advanced stage, due to the oversize of the tumor, patients may experience symptoms of bone pain (secondary tumors in bone), shortness of breath (secondary tumors in lung) and Headaches, neurological pain or weakness (secondary tumors in the nervous system) accompanied by the general symptoms shared with other types of cancer.
Out of many risk factor associated with the onset of breast cancer, genetic preposition may be one of the major prediction of the disease.
Dr. Amir Mehrgou, the lead scientist said, "Early detection of mutation carriers in these genes, in turn, can play an important role in its prevention. Because this disease has a high prevalence in half of the global population, female screening of reported mutations in predisposing genes, which have been seen in breast cancer patients, seems necessary. In this review, a number of mutations in two predisposing genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2) that occurred in patients with a family history,..".
In fact, women who carry the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have a 68% of lifetime risk to develop breast cancer.
In seeking a potential compound for the treatment of breast cancer, researchers examined the promising 3,3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM) anticancer effects of breast cancer patients with high HER-2/neu levels.
DIM combined with Herceptin enhances the effectiveness of Herceptin by significantly reducing cancer cell viability, and increasing apoptosis-induction and inhibition of colony formation, compared to the use of the chemo drug alone.
The combination also induced cancer cell death by inhibiting the expression of proteins associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines, cancer cell division and proliferation and migration.
Furthermore, the combination also significantly exhibited the expression of miR-200, which plays an essential in blocking tumor cell invasion and metastasis and reduction of FoxM1 expression in the promotion of cancer cell proliferation.
Dr. Ahmad A, the lead scientist said, "DIM-plus Herceptin therapy could be translated to the clinic as a therapeutic modality to improve treatment outcome of patients with breast cancer, particularly for the patients whose tumors express high levels of HER-2/neu".
Moreover, in order to know more information about DIM anti-breast cancer activity, researchers investigated the bioactive compound against the transcription factor Forkhead Box M1 (FoxM1) associated with aggressive human carcinomas, including breast cancer.
3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM), a nontoxic dietary chemopreventive agent showed to inhibit the FoxM1 in various breast cancer cell lines, according to the observation of gene transfection, real-time reverse transcription-PCR, and Western blotting.
Similar to the aforementioned results, DIM combined with Taxotere enhanced Taxotere-induced growth inhibition of breast cancer cells and decreased the invasive capacity of breast cancer cells compared to treatment alone.
Most importantly, the combination treatment also significantly inhibited tumor growth in severe immunodeficiency (SCID) mice,
Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Ginger, The Natural Treatment for Dementia with No Side Effects
Dementia is the medical condition characterized by the loss of mental ability, that is severe enough to interfere with people's every life. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia in aging people.
According to the statistics, about 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years and above that age.
The causes of dementia are associated with the gradual loss of neurons. Researchers do not know the exact causes of the death of neurons. Neither, they know why people with the same health condition in the same family, some are prone to the disease onset while others do not.
However, they do know certain risk factors are associated with the development of dementia, including
* The increase in age is the strongest known risk factor for dementia.
* Gender
Women are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than men.
* Ethnicity
Western people are more likely to develop dementia than people who live in Southeast Asia.
* Long-term use of medication
* Certain medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood glucose and cholesterol, and obesity.
Out of the many risk factors involved the incidence of dementia, aging probably is one of the major cause of the disease.
Dr. P Scheltens and colleagues in the evaluation of the risk factors of dementia wrote, "Prevalence estimates vary highly between studies. These variations may be due to variations in the study population—that is, reflect real differences. For example, age is the most important risk factor for dementia".
And, "In 2000, prevalence data from 11 European population-based studies were pooled to obtain stable estimates of the prevalence of dementia in the elderly (> 65 years)".
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of dementia with no side effects examined the traditional medicine use of ginger on dementia.
Epidemiologically, ginger has been known to have disease-modifying effects in Alzheimer's disease (AD).
6-Shogaol, a bioactive compound found in ginger has also recently been shown to process anti-neuroinflammatory effects in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated astrocytes and animal models of Parkinson's disease.
In a mice model, administration of 6-shogaol significantly reduced microgliosis and astrogliosis in intrahippocampal AβO-injected mice.
6-shogaol injection also ameliorated AβO and scopolamine-induced memory impairment by suppressing the production of proinflammatory cytokine and pre- and post-synaptic markers in the hippocampus.
Researchers after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "All these results suggest that 6-shogaol may play a role in inhibiting glial cell activation and reducing memory impairment in animal models of dementia".
Additionally, in order to reveal more information about Ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale) used for centuries to treat dementia in South Asia, researchers examined the 70% aqueous/methanolic extract of dried ginger (Zo.Cr) on a dementia model.
On isolated rat stomach fundus, Zo.Cr showed a spasmogenic effect (0.03-5.00 mg mL(-1)) and relaxed the tissue at concentrations > or =5 mg mL(-1).
In atropinized (0.1 microM) preparations, Zo.Cr (0.3-3.0 mg mL(-1)) relaxed high K(+) (80 mM)-induced contractions, indicating the disruption of the Ca(++) channel associated with pain.
6-gingerol was the most potent in inhibition of BuChE. BuChE activity progressively in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD).
Take all together, ginger processed a high amount of bioactive compounds may be considered a functional alternative for the prevention and treatment of dementia, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
