Herbal Bilberry Promotes Normal Gut Microbiome for Optimizing Overall Health

Gut microbiota is the microbe population (tens of trillions) that lives in the intestine.

Gut microbiota plays a critical role in human overall health by assisting nutrient metabolism, xenobiotic and drug metabolism and maintaining the structural integrity of the gut mucosal barrier, immunomodulation, and protecting the gut against pathogens.

However, according to the joint study led by the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, Asian Healthcare Foundation, these functions in adults may be disrupted by several factors, including the use of antibiotics or antibiotic and diet.

Furthermore, gut microbiota also constitutes a natural defensive barrier to gut infection in a stable condition. Alternation of the gut microbiota due to infection, diet and/or lifestyle has been found to induce diseases, such as inflammatory bowel diseases and cancer.

People with colon cancer were found to associate with gut microbial imbalance (dysbiosis). In other words, manychanges in the bacterial composition of the gut microbiota may contribute to the development of colorectal cancer.

Out of the many risk factors involved the alternation of the gut microbiome, some researchers suggested that xenobiotics and toxicological effects may have a strong impact on human health.

Dr. the lead scientist in the assessment of gut microbiome change on chemical risk said, " it is highly likely that the toxic effects of ingested xenobiotics are significantly enhanced or reduced by the gut microbiota".

And, "Xenobiotic suppression or enhancement of proliferation of specific groups of intestinal microbes may lead to alterations of the composition of the intestinal bacterial population, which in turn is known to affect the permeability of the intestinal epithelium... It is thus highly likely that the integrity of the gut barrier can be affected by the changes induced by microbiota-disrupting chemicals. This may, in turn, lead to alteration in the uptake of the given chemical, as well as of other toxic and/or beneficial components present in the gut".

The results strongly suggested that injection of xenobiotic can cause a significant change in the ratio gut microbiota homeostasis, a leading cause of a number of chronic diseases.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural remedy which processed a strong effect in the improvement of digestive system examined the bilberry effect on intestinal barrier function and digestive enzyme activity, through regulating the gut microbiota in aging rats.

Aging rats selected to the study were orally injected by a medium-dose bilberry anthocyanin extract (20 mg per kg bw per day) which is considered the optimum amount to regulate the intestinal function.

Injection of the experimental medium-dose bilberry anthocyanin extract showed a significant improvement of the gut/microbiome by allowing the good bacterias to growth and restricting the growth of harmful bacterias in the digestive tract.

Compared to the experimental dose, high-dose bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption altered some intestinally beneficial bacteria in an adverse way.

Furthermore, according to the tested analysis, the promotion of the gut microbiome was correlated with the changes in short-chain fatty acids and the intestinal mucosal barrier in the absorption of nutrients.

Moreover, the medium-dose bilberry anthocyanin extract also decreased the activity of digestive enzymes in the tested rats.

In other words, the tested dose improved the digestive function through promoting healthy gut/microbiome and nutrients absorption with the needs of low levels of digestive enzymes which have been found in lower levels in the aging population.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a function remedy for the improvement of levels of gut/microbiome for optimal health, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Honey the Best Natural Treatment of High Blood Pressure with No Side Effects, Scientists Say

Hypertension is a chronic condition caused by abnormally high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is a condition of a cluster of metabolic syndrome associated with the increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

In high blood pressure individuals, due to the elevated blood pressure in your arteries, the heart has to work harder than normal to pump blood through the blood vessels.

In low blood pressure individuals, the reduced blood pressure in the arteries drops can cause the heart to pump blood at a slower rate than normal.

According to the standard guidelines, the levels of blood pressure is normal if it is more than 120 over 80 and less than 140 over 90 (120/80-140/90).

People with blood pressure lower than 120/80 are considered normal without accompanied by symptoms of light-head or dizziness.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in the U.S. 29% or 100 millions of the adults have hypertension during 2015–2016 and hypertension prevalence increased with age and was 33.2% among those aged 40–59 and 63.1% among those aged 60 and over.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of the healthy food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers in the course of finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of high blood pressure investigated the safety and effect intrapulmonary administration (by inhalation) of 60 % honey solution, 10% dextrose or distill water in normal or diabetic subjects.

Twenty-four healthy subjects, 16 patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and six patients with hypertension were selected to participate in the study.

Twelve healthy subjects were subjected for distilling water inhalation for 10 min, and after one week they received inhalation of honey solution (60% wt/v) for 10 min. Another 12 healthy subjects received inhalation of 10% dextrose for 10 min.

Honey treatment showed a mild reduction of blood pressure compared to no change in another group.

In time perspective, systolic and diastolic blood pressure was reduced by honey inhalation in hypertensive patients at 60 and 120 min.

After taking into account co and confounders, researchers said, "honey inhalation was safe and effective in reducing...elevated blood pressure in hypertensive patients".

Moreover, in order to obtain more information of honey antihypertensive activity, researchers investigated the aqueous extract obtained from the mixture of the fresh leaf of Persea Americana, stems and a fresh leaf of Cymbopogon citratus, fruits of Citrus medica and honey on ethanol and sucrose-induced hypertension in rats.

Rats included in the study were divided into eight groups of 6 rats each and daily treated for 5 weeks. The control group received distilled water (1 mL/kg) while rats of groups 2, 3 and 4 received ethanol 40 degrees (3 g/kg/day), 10% sucrose as drinking water and the two substances respectively.

The remaining groups received additional sucrose and ethanol, the aqueous extract (50, 100 and 150 mg/kg) or nifedipine (10 mg/kg) respectively.

Group treated with ethanol and sucrose showed a significantly (p < 0.001) increased the blood pressure and the heart rate compared to distilled water treated-rats.

Chronic treatment of ethanol and sucrose also exerted a significantly decreased the activities of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host, observed by the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) and elevated levels of oxidative stress observed by the stress marker malondialdehyde (MDA) levels.

However, administration of the aqueous extract or nifedipine prevented all changes caused by chronic ethanol and sucrose, including the hemodynamic, biochemical, oxidative and histological impairments.

The finding clearly suggested that aqueous extract including honey possess antihypertensive activity by the improvement of biochemical and oxidative status, through its antioxidant property.

Taken altogether, honey used alone or combined with other herbs may be considered anti hypertension functional remedies with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Manuka Honey improves the Cellular Antioxidant Defense Enzymes

Free radical or reactive oxygen species are unstable atoms with unpaired electrons on the outermost ring that are ready to donate or intercept an electron from other atoms, leading to a chain reaction which can not be stopped until they all electrons on the outermost ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

On the other hand, antioxidants are stable atoms which inhibit oxidation caused by free radicals.

In healthy individuals, antioxidant enzymes produced by the liver are good enough to balance the free radical produced by the cell metabolism and external sources such as the air we breathe and the food we eat.

However, in people with a weakened immune system such as infants, children and the elderly, dietary sources from supplements, fruits and vegetables may be needed.

Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance of the ration of free radical and antioxidant in the body. A prolonged period of oxidative stress has been found to cause proteins and lipid damage and alteration of cell DNA inducing chronic diseases such as CVD, diabetes, and cancer.

Believe it or not, free radicals also play a critical role in maintaining a certain body function. The Journal of Physiology showed that free radicals act as signal substances that cause the heart to beat with the correct force.

In other words, Dr. says Håkan Westerblad said, ""Free radicals play an important role since they contribute to the heart being able to pump more blood in stress-filled situations."

And "On the other hand, persistent stress can lead to heart failure, and chronically increased levels of free radicals may be part of the problem here."

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of the healthy food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient which enhances the cellular antioxidant defense system against diseases, researchers examined Manuka honey effects in the genotoxic and genoprotective properties in cells activity against free radicals in the ranging from 25-1000 μg/mL.

In a modest decrease of H2O2-induced cellular DNA damage, Manuka honey displayed a stronger potential to attenuate damaged cells at all tested concentrations, particularly in the concentrations of 25 and 100 μg/mL.

More precisely, Manuka honey protected DNA of whole blood cells from oxidative damage induced by hydrogen peroxide in vitro.

Furthermore, Manuka honey exerted a similar activity against free radical overexpression, compared to buckwheat honey which has higher contents of sugars, proteins, and total phenols but a lower content of MGO.

Additionally, Manuka honey also exhibited a strong cellular antioxidant and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa,, compared to those of buckwheat honey.

Where buckwheat honey is considered to have great nutritional and commercial potentials

Taken altogether, Manuka honey may be considered anti hypertension functional remedy for the enhancement of the cellular antioxidant defense system with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Artichoke, the Mediator for Sex Steroid Hormone Metabolism, According to Studies

Artichoke may have a profound and positive effect on sex steroid hormone metabolism with no side effects, according to studies.

The steroid hormones are hormones made mainly by endocrine glands such as the gonads (testis and ovary), the adrenals and (during gestation) by the fetoplacental unit.

In other words, steroid hormones can be grouped into two classes: corticosteroids (typically made in the adrenal cortex, hence cortico-) and sex steroids (made in the gonads or placenta).

Metabolism plays many important roles in steroid hormone action in reaching the target of production and stopping production when the target is reached within the target tissues.

The function of sex steroid hormone is to influence the maintenance and growth of muscles, and the decline in androgens, estrogens, and progesterone due to aging are associated with the loss of muscular function and mass.

In male puberty, testosterone, the sex hormones produced by luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), plays an important role in the physical changes associated with puberty, and in testicular maturation.

In female puberty, increased hormones luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulates the production of hormones including estrogen and progesterone, leading to breast change and menstrual period.

In the reproductive function, sex steroid hormones stimulate the development of the maturing ovarian follicle and control ovum production in the female and sperm production in the male.

In the nonreproductive function, receptors for estrogens, progesterone, and androgens are associated with the function of bone, brain, cardiovascular system. The results suggested that sex steroid hormones may play a critical role in the pathophysiology of some diseases (osteoporosis, Alzheimer, atherosclerosis).

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Researchers on finding potential and natural ingredient for the mediation of the sex steroid hormones and metabolic activity examined the effects of a combination botanical supplement on premenopausal women.

The placebo-controlled, parallel-arm, pilot study tested the effects of two naturopathic interventions over five menstrual cycles in 40 healthy premenopausal women.

Participants were given either dietary changes (3 servings/d crucifers or dark leafy greens, 30 g/d fiber, 1-2 liters/d water, and limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption to 1 serving each/wk; n = 10), and placebo (n = 15).

During the early follicular phase, the botanical supplement decreased dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), an endogenous steroid hormone(-13.2%; P = 0.02), which has been found to affect how estrogen works. Increased expression of DHEA is associated with the sensitive conditions of breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids and dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (-14.6%; P = 0.07).

Compared to placebo, the formula also inhibited the levels of dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S), an endogenous androstane steroid that is produced by the adrenal cortex and a possible markers for hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) function in patients with large pituitary adenomas.

Furthermore, the combination reduced the expression of androstenedione, a steroid hormone in a normal range and improved the production of the hormone testosterone and enhanced recovery and growth from exercise, and increased sexual desire and performance. Overexpression of androstenedione has been found to facilitate the growth of endometrial cancer.

Levels of estrone-sulfate a form of estrogen found to alleviate symptoms of menopause as hormone replacement therapy also decreased by the injection of the formula. Increased levels of estrone-sulfate are involved in the onset of Cancers associated with the response to estrogen.

Also compared to placebo, no other trends or statistically significant changes were observed. In other words, comparing dietary changes with placebo, no statistically significant differences were observed other than those mentioned above.

The findings strongly suggested that the formula may have strong activity against the overexpression of certain steroid hormones involved the risk of mammary cancers.

Taken altogether, artichoke used alone or combined with other herbal medicine including Curcuma longa, Rosmarinus officinalis, Schisandra chinensis, Silybum marinum, and Taraxacum officinalis may be considered mediation of steroid hormones against the onset of certain cancers in premenopausal women, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Alliin Protects the Heart Muscles Against Cardiotoxicity

Cardiotoxicity is a medical condition induced by the damage of the heart muscle. The infected heart muscles may reduce the function of the heart in pumping blood, the condition which can lead to heart failure.

Most cases of cardiotoxicity are the results of long-term intake of certain medication such as chemotherapy. However, infected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) genetic preposition, a malignant disease associated with the amyloid deposited on your heart or other organs, high blood pressure, untreated hyperthyroidism, and vitamin b2 deficiency are some prevalent factors found in patients with cardiotoxicity.

Most common symptoms of cardiotoxicity are associated with not enough blood circulation in the body such as tiredness and fatigue, a long-term (chronic) cough, shortness of breath, floating,

Physically, most patients with cardiotoxicity also experience symptoms of enlarged heart muscle examined by the chest X-ray, abnormal heart or lung sounds and swelling in your hands, feet, or unusual weight gain.

Conventionally, treatment of cardiotoxicity depending on the cause of the disease may include
* Beta-blockers, for the improvement of the blood flow and reduction of palpitations, arrhythmias, and high blood pressure.

*ACE inhibitors induce (widen) the arterial dilation and improvement of the blood flow.

* Diuretics, by getting rid of excess fluids that reduce heart function in blood pumping

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide, a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cardiotoxicity, researchers evaluated the preventive role of S-allyl cysteine sulphoxide (SACS, alliin) in isoproterenol (ISO)-induced cardiotoxicity in an animal model.

The study included male Wistar rats induced myocardial infarction by subcutaneous injection of isoproterenol (ISO) (150 mg/kg) once a day for 2 days, following by the pretreatment of SACS (40 and 80 mg/kg) orally daily for a period of 35 days using an intragastric tube.

Pretreatment of SACS showed a significantly lowered thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and increased the levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

The reduced levels of the concentration of reduced glutathione (GSH) in myocardial infarcted rats also increased with the injection of SACS.

SACS pretreatment also increased significantly the levels of mitochondrial phospholipids and decreased the levels of mitochondrial cholesterol, free fatty acids (FFAs), triglycerides (TGs) and calcium, and the activity of xanthine oxidase (XOD) in heart, elevated conditions have been found to induce heart disease.
Where low levels of mitochondrial phospholipids have been found to involve heart failure.

Futhermore, SACS also increased the enzyme activity of oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondrial fraction of the heart.

Moreover, oral administration of SACS for a period of 35 days protected the heart function in the myocardial infarction without affecting the heart function in the normal control rats.

The findings strongly suggested the protective role of SACS against cardiotoxicity caused by subcutaneous injection of medication.

Dr. Sangeetha T, the leads scientist wrote in the final report, "The effect at a dose of SACS 80 mg/kg was more effective than the dose 40 mg/kg. The results of the study conclude that SACS protect the mitochondria of the ISO-induced myocardial-infarcted rats".

Taken altogether, alliin used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cardiotoxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane, May Be Potent Against Glioblastoma, Scientists Say

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the treatment of glioblastoma (GBM) and resistant glioblastoma with no side effects, according to studies.

Glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive cancers that begins within the brain.

According to statistics, most patients diagnosed with cancer die within 12 to 15 months. Less than 5% of patients is survived longer than five years.

If you are male you are at 1.5 higher risks of glioblastoma, compared to the female's counterpart.

The causes of glioblastoma are unknown, some researchers suggested that genetic preposition and environmental factors, previous radiotherapy, a weakened immune system may be some risk factors associated with the onset of the disease.

Most cases of GBM are diagnosed at an older age with a median age of 64. Some researchers suggested that aging with the change of body function may be one of the major risk factors that causes the incidence.

Dr. Judith Schwartzbaum, an associate professor of epidemiology and a member of The Ohio State University’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, in the study focused on the relationship between chemical signals from the immune system and the development of brain cancer uncovered the relationship between allergies, the immune system, and brain cancer. It appears that allergies may protect against the development of brain cancer.

She wrote, "It's important to identify the early stages of tumor development if we hope to intervene more effectively. " and "If you understand those early steps, maybe you can design treatments to block further tumor growth".

The results strongly suggested that people with a weakened immune system such as the elderly may be at a higher risk of glioblastoma

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.

Researchers in the concern of current therapy deficits for treatment glioblastoma due to the limitation of limits the transport of essential drugs to the tumor sites. examined the effects of 3,3'-diindolylmethane by encapsulation in poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles.

Nanoformulation loading of 27-87nm and encapsulation efficiency of 7.2% and 70% respectively showed to induce the glioma cells apoptosis internally.

Furthermore, in vivo, a bio-distribution study revealed the selective accumulation of the nanoformulation into rat brain tumor sites by crossing the blood-brain barrier.

Moreover, the nanoformulation also exhibited the abrogation of epidermal growth factor receptor pathway which has been found to that promote the growth and spread of glioblastoma cells.

Dr. Bhowmik A, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders, wrote, "Our novel nano preparation, therefore, shows great promise to serve as a template for targeted delivery of other therapeutics in treating GBM".

In order to reveal more information about the prognosis for glioblastoma patients, researchers examined the 3,3'-diindolylmethane anti glioblastoma activity.

Indole-3-carbinol and related fragments, including 3,3'-Diindolylmethane exerted a potent anti glioblastoma activity with low micromolar activity, particularly resistant glioblastoma cell culture.

The finding clearly suggested that 3,3'-diindolylmethane alone or encapsulated in poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles induced the glioblastoma cells and resistant glioblastoma cells death through a number of mechanisms.

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of glioblastoma and resistant glioblastoma, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Bilberry May Process Depressant-Like Effects

Depression is a mood disorder, affecting the patients feel, think, and handle daily activities

Acute depression comes and goes is a normal response formed a part of our daily lives such as a loss of job, the death of a loved one, and illness.

Over 30 million Americans suffer from depression and the amount is increasing at an alarming rate.

However, chronic depression may be a mental health disorder that can affect the way you eat, sleep, and the way you feel about yourself.

Researchers don't know what causes exactly depression. Neither they know why some people are more prone to depression while many do not.

However, according to epidemiological studies, major illness, culture shock, family history, social and family isolation due to other mental illnesses or other factors, physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, long-term use of medication, such as isotretinoin and genetic preposition can contribute to the risk of developing clinical depression.

Given to the cultural diversity in Canada, there is no doubt that many immigrants come to the country try to adapt to the change of culturally and socially, some of them may be culturally shocked that can lead to major depression.

Dr. Natali Creglia, in the article "Impact of Cultural Shock on Mental Health" wrote, "According to Analysis of Impact of Culture Shock on Individual Society by Junzi Xia, “When these people lose all familiar signs and symbols of social intercourse, they have to try to adapt themselves to different lifestyles, living conditions and business practices in a new cultural setting. However, this is a long term and difficult process. In this condition, feelings of alienation accumulate sharply because of poor adaptation. Consequentially, culture shock occurs, followed by a series of psychological confusion and emotional discomfort. (Hess, 1994)” (Xia, 2009). Individuals experiencing cultural shock have to adjust to a completely new way of life".

And "Customs and beliefs of their homeland do not apply in this new area anymore. This is often where the idea of being ‘weird’ or ‘awkward’ originates from. Psychological stress begins to emerge. This stress is the starting point to much deeper psychological problems. “Although not everyone will experience all the symptoms, almost all people will experience some parts. The major symptoms may be described as depression, anxiety and feelings of helplessness (Mio, 1999)” (Xia, 2009) Sense of isolation occurs in most individuals as does a sense that the personal culture has been lost.

These results strongly suggested that immigrants come to Canada who can not adapt to the new cultures may experience psychological confusion and emotional discomfort from time to time, leading to culture shock induced-depression.

In the differentiation of natural compound for the treatment of depression, researchers evaluated the antidepressant-like effects of water VBF extract (VBFW) in an animal model.

In a mouse model of chronic restraint stress (CRS), VBFW treatment significantly reduced the immobility time and increased swimming time in forced swim test (FST) without altering the locomotor activity in unstressed mice.

CRS mice treated with VBFW showed a reduction of depression by exhibiting significantly decreased immobility time in FST and serum corticosterone (CORT), increased locomotor activity in the open field test (OFT), and enhanced brain monoamine neurotransmitters.

Futhermore, VBFW ameliorated depression-related behavior and promoted neurogenesis by exhibiting functions of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling pathway in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex (PFC).

Moreover, VBFW also acted as an agonist in neuromodulation against the 5-HT receptor that binds the (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) in the induction of depression.

Dr. Oh DR the lead scientist said, " Our study provides evidence that antidepressant-like effects of VBFW might be mediated by the regulation of monoaminergic systems and glucocorticoids".

Also, in a mouse model of chronic restraint stress (CRS), CRS-exposed mice treated with VBLW (100 and 200 mg/kg) showed a similar effect of the above study by significantly reduced immobility time and increased swimming and climbing times in the FST, and increased locomotor activity in the OFT.

CRS mice treated with VBLW exhibited the antidepressant-like activity by significantly decreased levels of serum corticosterone (CORT) and adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH), but enhanced brain monoamine neurotransmitters.

Increased levels of CORT and ACTH and protein levels of monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) and SERT and decrease tryptophan hydroxylase-2 (TPH2) protein levels, were found in patients with depression.

CRS mice treated with VBLW had dramatically decreased protein levels of MAO-A and serotonin transporter (SERT) but increased TPH2 protein levels in the hippocampus and the PFC.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed antidepressant-like activity may be considered a herbal remedy for the treatment of depression, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Artichoke, the Potential Anti Thyroid Cancer Herbal Remedy with No Side Effects, Scientists Reveal

Scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the treatment of thyroid cancer with no side effect, according to studies.

Thyroid cancer is a chronic and medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the thyroid gland due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of thyroid cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the gland, affecting the thyroid function in hormone production in the early stage.

About 45% of thyroid cancer is found in the population over the age of 45. According to the statistic, approximately over 53,000 adults in the United States are diagnosed with thyroid cancer every year.

In other words, the risk of thyroid cancer is about 4% a year, according to the data from 2005 to 2014. Overall, the 5-year survival rate for people with thyroid cancer is 98%.

The exact causes of thyroid cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies suggested that people who have a family history of goiter, exposure to high levels of radiation, and certain hereditary syndromes are at an increased risk of the incidence.

Some researchers suggested that if you are female, your risk of thyroid cancer is increased substantially compared to the male counterpart.

Dr. Reza Rahbari, the lead scientist in the study to examine the thyroid cancer gender disparity, said, "Thyroid cancer is one of the fastest growing cancer diagnoses worldwide. It is 2.9-times more common in women than men".

And, "Recent studies on estrogen receptor status in thyroid cancer show a difference in the receptor subtypes expressed based on the histology of thyroid cancer. Moreover, the response to estrogen is dependent on the specific estrogen receptor expressed in thyroid cancer cells".

The results clearly suggested that the risk of thyroid cancer is 2.9 higher in the female, probably due to the response to the hormone estrogen.

Researchers on finding a natural chemo compound for the treatment of thyroid cancer examined the antithyroid cancer activity of the sesquiterpene lactone cynaropicrin, a major constituent of the artichoke leaves extracts.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of cynaropicrin, a major compound from the sesquiterpenes on the grown of three human thyroid carcinoma cell lines.

Injection of cynaropicrin showed to inhibit the viability of CAL-62, 8505C and SW1736 cells in a dose- and time-dependent way, with an EC50 of about 5 mM observed after 48 h of treatment.

In the cellular growth assays, cynaropicrin inhibited the cell proliferation through the arrest of the cell cycle, mainly in the G2/M phase, observed by the presence of a significant percentage of necrotic cells.

Furthermore, the differentiation after 48 h of treatment with 10 mM of cynaropicrin suggested that the compound induced cell apoptosis also through the inhibition of the proteins associated with cellular survival and cell cycle division.

Moreover, the application also reduced the free radical activity in exhibiting the expression of lipid peroxidation, without any significant effect on the reactive oxygen species production.

These results clearly suggested that cynaropicrin exhibited the function of free radical in exerting the cytotoxic effect against the thyroid cancer without causing harm to the healthy nearby cells through its antioxidant activity.

Taken altogether, artichoke processed abundantly bioactive compound sesquiterpene lactone cynaropicrin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of thyroid cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Honey, the Best Natural Remedy for Chronic Otitis Externa With No Side Effects

Acute otitis externa is a condition characterized by the inflammation of the ear canal. Most cases of acute cute otitis externa are associated with the infection by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus due to the improper cleaning.

However, people with seborrhoeic dermatitis caused by inflammation of greasy areas of the skin can also lead to infection of the ears.

Most common symptoms of acute otitis include itching, canal edema, canal erythema, and otorrhea.

Most cases of acute otitis externa are healed within days with proper ear drops. However, there is a rare case that the disease may take weeks or months to recover.

Chronic otitis externa shares the common symptoms of the acute form, accompanied by water retention and severe ear pain and temporary loss of hearing, due to building up thick and dry skin can build up inside the ear canal, leading to narrowing the ear canal.

Untreated of chronic otitis externa can cause deafness.

Besides sharing the risk factors with the acute form, otitis externa can also be caused by infection due to long-term use of hearing aids and earplugs.

Unlike the acute form, most cases of otitis externa are treated with steroid drops in addition to antibiotics accompanied by oral intake of pain medications such as ibuprofen.

Generally, oral antibiotics are not recommended, however, if the infection has spread beyond the ear canal, oral antibiotics may be applied.

According to the statistics, otitis externa affects 1–3% of people in America a year and 95% of people complaints of the condition are acute.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On the finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of eczematous external otitis, scientists investigated the antibacterial potential of medical honey eardrops as treatment of eczematous external otitis.

15 patients diagnosed with recurrent eczematous external otitis were selected and treated with medical honey eardrops for 2 weeks.

Honey treatment resulted in less discomfort and itching and decreased signs of eczema with no side effects, according to assays.

Although honey eardrops showed a strong in vitro inhibitory activity against all tested strains, it did not eradicate Staphylococcus aureus infection.

Honey eardrops also reduced the visual analog scale of ear complaints, a score of eczema, and increased the eradication of bacterial infection. Most patients in the study, are satisfied with the use of honey eardrops for the treatment of their eczematous external otitis.

Dr. Henatsch D, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders said, "The results of this preliminary study indicate a possible role of honey eardrops in eczematous ear disease".

Taken altogether, honey may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of eczematous external otitis, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bilberry Cuts Off the Energy Supply to Cancers, Studies Found

Bilberry may process a unique function in blocking the formation of the new blood vessels to fuel the tumor growth, according to studies.

Angiogenesis is the development of new blood vessels from the existing vasculature. The process has occurred throughout life in human in forms of health and disease.

Normal angiogenesis ensures that developing or healing tissues receive an adequate supply of nutrients,

In a tumor, the availability of nutrients is limited, therefore, for the tumor to survive and to grow continuously, the tumor cells induce the formation a new blood supply from the preexisting vasculature by stimulating the protein associated with the pro-angiogenesis and facilitation of angiogenesis, such as vascular endothelial growth factor.

In other words, if we can cut off the blood vessels that provide nutrients to the tumor, we may cure cancers.

Dr. Adair TH, the lead scientists in the investigation of the angiogenesis in diseases and cancer said, "Stimulation of angiogenesis can be therapeutic in ischemic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, and wound healing. Decreasing or inhibiting angiogenesis can be therapeutic in cancer, ophthalmic conditions, rheumatoid arthritis, and other diseases".

And, "Capillaries grow and regress in healthy tissues according to functional dem bands. Exercise stimulates angiogenesis in skeletal muscle and heart. A lack of exercise leads to capillary regression. Capillaries grow in adipose tissue during weight gain and regress during weight loss.

The results strongly suggested that by allowing or blocking the growth of new blood vessels, angiogenesis may be used as a primary target for the treatment of chronic diseases and cancers

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound which blocks the progression of cancer examined the anti-angiogenic activity of berry anthocyanins.

Six berry extracts (wild blueberry, bilberry, cranberry, elderberry, raspberry seeds, and strawberry) included in the study were analyzed the anti-angiogenic (the ability to reduce unwanted growth of blood vessels, which can lead to varicose veins and tumor formation) properties.

Formula OptiBerry IH141, including all berries used in the study, demonstrated superior anti-angiogenic properties compared to the other combinations tested.

OptiBerry significantly inhibited free radical and proinflammatory cytokines in the expression of VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) associated with the formation of the new blood vessels.

According to the Matrigel assay using human microvascular endothelial cells, OptiBerry reduced the new blood vessel formation by impairing angiogenesis.

Futhermore, endothelioma cells pretreated with OptiBerry showed a diminished ability to form hemangioma and markedly decreased tumor growth by more than 50% through its anti-angiogenic, and anti-carcinogenic properties.

In order to reveal more information about berries anti-angiogenic activity to prevent and treat cancer, researchers investigated the six berry extracts (wild blueberry, bilberry, cranberry, elderberry, raspberry seed, and strawberry) and a grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) against the formation of new blood vessels for cancer proliferation.

Wild bilberry and blueberry extracts possessed the highest antioxidant activity observed by the ORAC values compared to other berries.

In other words, wild bilberry and blueberry extracts inhibited the overexpression of free radicals and proinflammatory cytokines in stimulating the production of VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) in enhancing angiogenesis.

Interestingly, these activities of wild bilberry and blueberry extracts were not shared by other antioxidants such as alpha-tocopherol or GSPE but were commonly shared by pure flavonoids.

Taken altogether, bilberry used alone or combined with other berries may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of angiogenesis and treatment of cancer cells proliferation by stimulating the formation of a new blood vessel, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric Protects Your Skin Against Photo-Damage

Photodamage is a type of skin damage caused by long-term exposure to the sunlight or tanning bed.

Photodamage skin is one most common form of skin damage in the US, due to misunderstanding the benefits and adverse effects on light exposure.

Believe it or not, a quarter of lifetime sun exposure occurs before the end of the teenage years. Most cases of photo skin damage can also stimulate some unwanted skin conditions, including advanced aging or wrinkling, uneven skin, hyperpigmentation, telangiectasias, actinic keratoses liver, and age spots.

In severe cases, long-term photodamage skin can also lead to skin cancer. More people in the US are diagnosed with skin cancer each year than all other cancers combined.

According to the statistic, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70.

Conventionally, most cases of early-stage and mild damage of skin are treated by topical Levulan that remove scaly patches of actinic keratoses from your skin.

However, Laser surgery may be necessary, if the topical fails.

Dr. Jee SH, the lead scientist in the examination of the risk of photodamage skin in the risk of skin cancer wrote, "Some workers in paraquat manufacturing, exposed to bipyridines, have developed pigmentation and keratosis on sun-exposed skin".

And, "This pathologic study proves that all the lesions showed either photodamage or skin cancer. The strong trend in the correlation between the severity of photodamage and exposure to bipyridine leads to the speculation about the synergistic role of bipyridine exposure and the solar effect in causing these malignant and premalignant skin lesions".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the concerns of Ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation in inducing skin photo-damage associated with the onset of a sunburn, erythema, photoaging, and photocarcinogenesis, researchers evaluated the protective effects of curcumin against acute photo-damage.

In hairless mice, topical application of curcumin exerted a kin protective effect by significantly inhibiting acute UVB (540 mJ cm-2 , for 3 successive days)-induced inflammatory cells, collagen accrementition derangement, and lipid peroxidation.

Additionally, the topical cream with curcumin also stimulated the NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) nuclear accumulation involved in skin defense on uncovered (Uncv) hairless mice skin.

In vitro, treatment of HaCaT cells with curcumin significantly attenuated acute UVB (300 mJ cm-2 ) tissue damage in releasing lactate dehydrogenase release (LDH) into the bloodstream.

Levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species production and DNA damage are also inhibited by the injection of curcumin by activating the expression of phase II detoxifying enzymes and promoting DNA repair activity.
Additional analysis of the skin protective activity of curcumin, researchers found that The photoprotective effect provided by curcumin was potentially associated with modulation of Nrf2-factor associated with antioxidant defense.

In order to reveal more information about the effects of turmeric anti skin damage, researchers looked into the turmeric and turmeric-containing polyherbal combination tablets versus placebo on facial redness.

The prospective, double-blind, randomized pilot study included 33 healthy participants were recruited from the dermatology clinic at the University of California, Davis and nearby community from 2016 to 2017 receive one of three interventions (placebo, turmeric or polyherbal combination tablets) and were told to take the intervention tablets by mouth twice daily for 4 weeks.

According to the results, the polyherbal combination group had a significant decrease in redness of 40% compared to baseline (P = 0.03) compared to that of placebo and turmeric groups with no statistically significant changes in image analysis-based facial redness.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Polyherbal combination tablet supplementation improved facial redness compared to the turmeric or placebo".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin used alone or combined with other phytochemical may be used for the prevention of skin photo-damage, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Sinigrin, Kills Cancer Cells, Before They Can Spread, According to Studies

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the body, including glands and organs due to the alternation of cell DNA.

In normal cells, through the process of mitosis, the new cells are born through the division of one cell into two with an aim to replace cells that have been lost, damaged, or worn out. The cell division cycle is closely regulated and they can give rise to only a limited array of cells.

The characteristics of cancer cell growth are completely different compared to normal cells. The cancer cell can divide indefinitely; They are out of control by the immune system. They don't follow the signals of stop division,.... and they do not have a specific function.

How cancer grows? Most cancers stimulate the production of a new blood vessel for nutrition and the function of producing enzymes that break down normal cells and tissues.

All cancers share the general symptoms of unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue, and tiredness and gastrointestinal discomforts accompanied by the specific symptoms depending on the location of cancer or the organ that was affected.

Out of a number of risk factors, some researchers suggested the creation of obesity in the modern world may be one of the major risk factor associated with the incidence.

Dr. Nathan A. Berger in the evaluation of obesity and risk of cancer wrote, "Overweight and obesity have reached pandemic levels on a worldwide basis and are associated with increased risk and worse prognosis for many but not all malignancies".

And, " lessons learned from the use of murine models to study the association, the impact of obesity on pancreatic cancer, the effect of dietary fats and cholesterol as cancer promoters, and the mechanisms by which the intestinal microbiome affects obesity and cancer".

The results showed a relationship between unhealthy diet risk of obesity in the induction of cancer.

Sinigrin is a phytochemical glucosinolate, belongs to the family of glucosides found abundantly in Brussels sprouts, broccoli, the seeds of black mustard, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of cancers examined sinigrin, the bioactive ingredient in cruciferous vegetables for their health benefits and cancer prevention properties in vitro against HL60 (human promyelocytic leukemia cell line) systems.

According to the HL60 assays, sinigrin showed the tumoricidal activity of plant samples (IC50 = 0.28 mg·mL(-1)) by breaking down the products of sinigrin hydrolysis.

Sinigrin also exerted a significant effect in the induction of tumor genotoxicity and proliferation with causing harm to the nearby healthy cells.

The finding strongly suggested that the efficacy of cruciferous vegetables in inducing cancer cell death and proliferation was attributed to the presence of bioactive ingredient sinigrin.

Furthermore, in a model of carcinogen-induced hepatotoxicity in rats, injection of sinigrin significantly inhibited the proliferation of liver tumor cells without inducing liver toxicity.

Injection of the compound for a period of 3 months exhibited pro-apoptotic activity against liver cancer by activating the tumor suppressive gene in the rats.

The active bioactive compound also inhibited the cancer cell proliferation through deactivating the production of proteins associated with liver cancer cells differentiation.

The effect of sinigrin against liver cancer is also found to cancer cell cycle arrest in the in G0/G1 phase.

The results clearly suggest that sinigrin processes important anti-proliferative activities in carcinogen-induced hepatocarcinogenesis in rats.

Taken altogether, sinigrin a bioactive ingredient in cruciferous vegetables may be considered a functional supplement for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

However, intake of bioactive in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care, as liver toxicity may be induced if overdosed.

Herbal Anise, the Best Potential and Natural Remedy for Tongue Cancer with No Side Effects

Tongue cancers is a medical condition characterized by abnormal cell growth in the tongue, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of cancer start in the cell of the inner lining tissue of the tongue. At stage 0, cancer cells are not found in the deeper layers of tissue, therefore, most patients at this stage may not experience any symptoms.

At the advanced stage, cancerous cells may travel a distance away from the tongue to infect other healthy tissues or organs through the circulation of fluids and blood, leading to secondary metastasis.

Most common secondary metastasis of tongue cancer is the mouth and muscle surrounding the mouth.

In 2018, approximately 17, 000 new cases of tongue cancer were diagnosed, representing 1% of all cancer cases in the US. Tongue cancer also causes the death of 2,500 people in the country.

The lifetime risk of tongue cancer is 0.4 % including men and women, based on 2013-2015 data. The 5 years survival of all stages of tongue cancer is 65.8%, according to the National Cancer Institute.

If you experience symptoms of a persistent red or white patch on your tongue, a tongue ulcer with persists pain that is not healed in 3 weeks, mouth numbness a sore throat with persistent bleeding from your tongue and lumps that do not go away, you may have tongue cancer. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

According to the report by the National Institute of Health, “Men who have performed oral sex on five or more women are at greater risk of developing head and neck cancer, especially if they smoke,” the Evening Standard reports.

This story is based on a US study that looked at 9,425 people aged 20 to 59 who provided information about their number of oral sex partners and were tested for oral human papillomavirus (HPV).

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belonging to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region.

The popular herb has been used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, carminative, digestive, expectorant, stimulant, and tonic agent to treat head-lice and mites, increase blood pressure, prevent formation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract and menstrual cramps, etc.

Besides the main ingredient Anethole, herbal Anise also contains, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

With an aim to discover a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of tongue squamous carcinoma with no side effects researchers at the China Medical University, assessed the effects of safrole, one of important food-borne phytotoxin of herbal Anise.

Injection of safrole showed a significant effect in inducing apoptosis in human tongue squamous carcinoma SCC-4 cells.

Safrole-induced apoptosis was attributed to stimulate the function of a protein associated with the secured cell death pathways and inhibit the anti-apoptotic proteins expression.

These results were also observed through the ratio of the expression of apoptotic and anti-apoptotic proteins found after injection of safrole.

According to the real-time PCR assay, safrole also promoted the mRNA expressions of proteins involved in the mediation of mitochondrial events of apoptosis in SCC-4 cells.

Dr. the lead scientist, wrote in the report, "Safrole is a cytotoxic effect in human tongue squamous carcinoma SCC-4 cells by inducing apoptosis. The induction of apoptosis of SCC-4 cells by safrole is involved in mitochondria- and caspase-dependent signal pathways".

Additonally in the examining aloe-emodin, one of the anthraquinones found in the anise seed, researchers assessed the anti-cancer effect of aloe-emodin on human tongue squamous carcinoma SCC-4 cells.

Injection of aloe-emodin induced cell death through cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in a dose- and time-dependent manner.

Treatment with 30 microM of aloe-emodin led to cell cycle arrest through activation of the protein involved tumor suppression and suppressed the proteins associated with regulating progression through the cell cycle.

Furthermore, aloe-emodin promoted the release of apoptosis through several inducing factors (AIF) (including endonuclease G (Endo G), procaspase-9 and cytochrome c from the mitochondria via a loss of the mitochondrial membrane potential (DeltaPsi(m))).

Moreover, injection of the free radical scavenger N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and caspase inhibitors markedly blocked aloe-emodin-induced apoptosis.

Taken altogether, herbal Anise processed bioactive compounds safrole and aloe-emodin may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of tongue squamous carcinoma.

Herbal Andrographis, the Best Herbal Remedy for Malaria with No Side Effects

Scientists may have found a herbal medicine for the treatment of malaria with no side effects, according to studies.

Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by parasitic protozoans.

People who are using the immune suppressive drug, having a weakened the immune system and infected by the HIV virus are more likely to experience severe effects of the infection.
Some researchers suggested that Women who are pregnant are at an increased risk of malaria infection.

Dr. Ebako Ndip Takem the lead scientist in the concern of malaria in pregnancy, wrote, "Pregnant women have a higher risk of malaria compared to non-pregnant women"

And "Maternal risk factors for malaria in pregnancy (MiP) include low maternal age, low parity, and low gestational age. The main effects of MIP include maternal anemia, low birth weight (LBW), preterm delivery and increased infant and maternal mortality".

Most common symptoms of the disease are shaking chills alternated with a high fever. profuse sweating. a headache, nausea. vomiting. abdominal pain and diarrhea.

In the Western world, malaria is almost nonexistent due to sanitation and mosquitos spray. However, the disease is most prevalent in the countryside of the third world countries due to living conditions and medication.

Due to the widespread of malaria in the third, the World Health Organization has set a goal for the prevention and treatment of malaria, including the develop products that will provide: efficacy against drug-resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum, potential for intermittent treatments (infants and pregnancy), safety in small children (less than 6 months old), safety in pregnancy, efficacy against Plasmodium vivax (including radical cure), efficacy against severe malaria, and transmission-blocking treatment.

Andrographis paniculata is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.

Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, other ingredients of herbal Andrographis include diterpene lactones, such as neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoinds viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.

In the urgency of finding a natural anti-malaria herbal medicine with low cost for the treatment of malaria in the third world, researchers evaluated the effect of extracts of Andrographis paniculata (AP) and Hedyotis corymbosa (HC).

Methanolic extracts of the plants were tested in vitro on choloroquine sensitive (MRC-pf-20) and resistant (MRC-pf-303) strains of Plasmodium falciparum.

The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of AP (7.2 microg/ml) was found better compared to those of the HC at a dose of 10.8 microg/ml).

Combination of these two herbal drugs showed substantial enhancements to their anti-malarial activity.

Increased in vivo potency was also observed with the combination of plant extracts, compared to the individual extracts and curcumin.

In-depth analysis of the plant extracts, researchers found the plant extracts inhibit the ring stage of the parasite and did not show any in vivo toxicity, whether they are used in isolation or in combination.

Dr. Mishra K, the lead scientist wrote on the final report, "Both these two plant extracts in combination with curcumin could be an effective, alternative source of herbal anti-malarial drugs".

Additionally, the investigation of the adulticidal and repellent activities of different solvent leaf extracts of Eclipta alba (E. alba) and Andrographis paniculata (A. paniculata) against malarial vector, Anopheles stephensi (An. stephensi) by comparing the adulticidal efficacy of the crude leaf extracts of E. alba and A. paniculata with five different solvents like benzene, hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol and chloroform was tested against the five to six day old adult female mosquitoes of An. stephensi.

Among the tested solvents the methanol extract showed a maximum efficacy compared to others. The LC(50) and LC(90) values of E. alba and A. paniculata against adults of An. stephensi were 150.36, 130.19 ppm and 285.22, 244.16 ppm.

According to the chi-square values, the methanol extract of A. paniculata produced maximum repellency against An. stephensi.

Dr. Govindarajan M and colleagues in the research team said, "the crude extract ..... A. paniculata was an excellent potential for controlling An. stephensi mosquitoes".

Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of malaria for the third world countries where conventional medicine are expensive and hard to find with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Andrographis, the Natural Anti-fertility Functional Remedy with No Side Effects

Scientists may have found a natural contraceptive for the prevention of conception, according to studies.

Anti-fertility is an act with intention to prevent, reduce or destroy fertility by using substances such as contraceptives, herbal medicine in under developing the world.

Contraceptives are a conventional medicine which allows you to enjoy sex without the risk of getting pregnant. The contraceptive pill is the most common contraceptive agent used in the Western world.

Many women also use a contraceptive pill for the treatment of irregular menstruation, painful or heavy periods, endometriosis, acne, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Most common side effects of the contraceptive pill include gastrointestinal discomforts, intermenstrual spotting, breast tenderness, headaches, and migraine, mood changes, missed periods and vaginal discharge.

Some women using the pill also experience symptoms of decreased libido.

Dr. Davis AR, the lead scientist in the examination of the effect of OCs on sexual functioning, wrote, " in 30 original research studies. In the retrospective, uncontrolled studies (n = 17), it was found that most women reported an increase in libido during OC use. In the uncontrolled, prospective studies (n = 4), it was found that most women reported little change in libido during OC use. In the perspective and cross-sectional controlled studies (n = 4), women using OCs reported both increased and decreased libido compared to non-OC user". and " In the most recent and well-conducted trial, a decrease in libido in OC users compared to placebo users was found".

These results strongly suggested that women may react differently to the use of the contraceptive pill, probably due to the based hormones in the body.

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.

Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, other ingredients of herbal Andrographis include diterpene lactones, such as neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoinds viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient with less cost and no side effect for males contraception, researchers at the Jamal Mohamed College examined the anti-fertility of dry leaf powder of A. paniculata in an animal model.

Dry leaf powder of A. paniculata fed orally to male albino rats, at a dose level of 20 mg powder per day for 60 days showed a significant effect on cessation of spermatogenesis, degenerative changes in the seminiferous tubules, regression of Leydig cells.

The antifertility activity also can be observed by the regressive and/or degenerative changes in the epididymis, seminal vesicle, ventral prostate and coagulating gland.

Furthermore, injection of the powder also reduced the weight and fluid content of the accessory glands.

The results of the treatment also demonstrated the accumulation of glycogen and cholesterol in the testis, and increased activities of lactate dehydrogenase in testis and alkaline phosphatase in testis and ventral prostate.

The finding clearly suggested that dry leaf powder of A. paniculata processes an antispermatogenic and/or antiandrogenic effect on the mice.

Moreover, in albino Wistar rats, researchers tested the anti-male fertility of andrographolide, a major bioactive compound found in herbal Andrographis extract.

The testosterone levels and fertility indices in treatment groups were found to be comparable with that of the control indicating no effect on fertility.

Total sperm count and sperm motility were not affected. The testes and epididymides did not show any gross and histopathological changes.

Administering 0, 20, 200, and 1000 mg/kg of body weight per day, for 65 days prior to mating and 21 days during mating.

The treated groups showed no signs of dose-dependent toxicity. The body weight gain and feed consumption were not affected at any of the dose levels.

The finding clearly suggested that the efficacy of herbal Andrographis in the induction of male infertility is not attributed to a single ingredient but all ingredients in the herbal medicine.

Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis may be considered a natural anti-male fertility or male contraceptive agent with no side effect, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
