Herbal Andrographis, the Renoprotective Herbal Remedy

Scientists may have found a natural remedy for the prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease with no side effects, according to studies.

The renoprotective effect is protection against anything that can cause harm to the kidney.

Chronic kidney disease, also known as chronic kidney failure, is a condition of gradual loss of kidney function.

According to the observation of patients data associated with the diseases, diabetes and high blood pressure are responsible for up to two-thirds of the cases.

Diabetes is a medical condition caused by long-term abnormally high blood glucose, leading to the damage of other tissue and organs, including the kidneys.

According to the statistic, approximately, 30 million American adults have chronic kidney disease, and a large percentage of these people aren't aware of it. 1 in 3 American adults is at risk for kidney disease.

Another cause of chronic kidney disease is kidney disease. Early diagnosis of chronic kidney disease can often keep chronic kidney disease from getting worse.

Late diagnosis of chronic kidney disease may eventually lead to kidney failure, leading to dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain life.

Some researchers suggested that improving the diet in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) can make a major difference in pathogenesis of the disease.

Dr. Chaudhary Muhammad Junaid Nazar at the Royal Gwent Hospital in the study diet and chronic kidney disease said, " During the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD), the requirements and utilization of different nutrients change significantly" and "Understanding the applicable nutritional principles and the available methods for improving the nutritional status of these patients is important".

These results clearly suggested by improving diet may be necessary to delay the complete kidney failure and maintain the kidney function.

For patients on dialysis, diet keeps the levels of electrolytes, minerals, and fluid in the body balanced.

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

It has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic doe the treatment of the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.

Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, other ingredients of herbal Andrographis include diterpene lactones, such as neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoinds viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.

With an aim to find a natural compound or whole herb for the treatment of reno disease with no side effects, researchers examined the anti-renal failure activity of A. paniculata.
The study included Male Wistar albino rats divided into three groups: normal control, gentamicin control, and an aqueous extract of A. paniculata (200 mg/kg, per oral (p.o.))-treated.

The nephrotoxic model was induced by gentamicin (80 mg/kg, intraperitoneal (i.p.)).

After 10 days, according to the blood sample, aqueous extract of A. paniculata attenuated the gentamicin-induced increase in serum creatinine, serum urea, and blood urea nitrogen levels by 176.92%, 106.27%, and 202.90%, respectively. in a gentamicin-induced nephrotoxic animal model.

These results strongly suggested that the aqueous extract (whole plant) of A. paniculata (Burm. f.) Nees exhibits a significant renoprotective effect against the gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in male Wistar albino rats.

Additionally, in the comparison the renal protective effects on medical plants, researchers investigated various herbal adaptogens such as shade-dried powders of Withania somnifera, Ocimum sanctum, Asperagus recemosus, Andrographis paniculata, Asphaltum panjabinum (Shilajith), Gymnema Sylvestre, Spirulina platensis, and Panax ginseng on cadmium (Cd)-induced oxidative stress and its accumulation in broiler chicken.

A total of 80 male broiler chicks of day-old age were randomly assigned to 10 equal groups. Group 1 birds were fed with basal diet throughout the experiment (1-42 days). Group 2-10 chicks were fed with a basal diet containing cadmium at 100 ppm from day 1 to day 28 (4 weeks). From 29(th) to 42(nd) day (2 weeks), basal diet alone was fed to group 2 chicks which acted as toxic control and group 3-10 birds were fed with feed containing 0.1% powder of W. somnifera, O. sanctum, Aspe. recemosus, An. paniculata, Asph. panjabinum (Shilajith), G. Sylvestre, S. platensis, and P. ginseng, respectively.

The highest concentration of cadmium was found accumulated in the kidney, in birds of group 2.

The oxidation induced the increase of thiobarbituric acid reacting substances (TBARS), and the decrease of antioxidant enzymes GSH concentrations of liver and kidney tissues in cadmium intoxicated birds were significantly reversed by the above-said herbs.

Herbal supplementation in groups 3-10 prevented Cd bioaccumulation which was most evident in the liver, followed by the kidney.

In other words, herbal Andrographis exerted a liver and kidney protective effects comparable to that of herbal medicines in the group 3, namely W. somnifera, O. sanctum, Aspe. recemosus, An. paniculata, Asph. panjabinum (Shilajith), G. Sylvestre, S. platensis, and P. ginseng, respectively.

Dr. Bharavi K, the lead scientist said in the report, "Administration of herbal adaptogens at the rate of 0.1% in feed significantly prevented the bioaccumulation of Cd and reversed the Cd-induced oxidative tissue damage".

Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention of kidney damage caused by oxidative stress and reno failure and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of kidney diseases with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

However, intake of the herbal medicine should be prescribed by the specialists in the related field as acute kidney damage has been reported in a number of cases
