Garlic, the Kitchen Spice That Blocks the Conditions for Developing Cardiovascular Diseases

A recent study suggested that garlic may be used for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Cardiovascular disease refers to heart diseases, affecting millions of people in the world.

According to statistic, over 17.7 million people died from CVDs in 2015.

The World Heart Foundation, in the investigation of CVD, suggested that CVD risk factors can be classified by
* Non-Modified risk factors such as age, ethnic background,....... and family history. The risk that can not be controlled
* Modified risk factors such as smoking, high blood cholesterol, and pressure, diabetes physical inactivity,.... and overweight. These types of risks can be controlled through a change in lifestyle and diet.

Most common symptoms of CVD include chest pain, neck, jaw, shoulder, arms, or back pain, shortness of breath, sweating, ..... and light-headedness.

If you experience some of the above symptoms, you may have CVD. Please check with your doctor to rule the possibility.

There are many causes of heart disease. Anything that serves to damage the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart can be defined as a risk of heart disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease can cause many potentially fatal complications if left untreated. In US 1 in 4 deaths is due to heart disease.

The most common complications of heart diseases are heart failure, the condition occurs when the heart cannot adequately pump blood throughout the body and heart attack, it occurs when the coronary arteries narrow caused by building up of plaques that block the blood supply to the heart.

Some researchers also suggested that CVD can also cause stroke due to blood clots formed in the blood vessels in the brain that obstruct blood flow.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belongings to family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia.

The whole food has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotic, etc.

According to the Nihon University, organosulfur compounds found in garlic stimulate the functions of our body in attenuated risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Dr. Kulczyński B, the lead author insisted that the effectiveness of garlic for prevention and treatment of heart diseases probably is the result of the whole herb in expression of antioxidant, chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties.

Other study suggested the role of garlic in alleviating the risks of the metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular complications is due to its modulatory effects on hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia and oxidative stress.

Garlic also has the potential to treat mild hypertension, decrease hypercholesterolemia, and prevent atherosclerosis, some major risk factors of CVD, according to the joint study lead by the Jordan University of Science and Technology,

Dr. Alali FQ, the lead author of the study also said, " Garlic (Allium sativum L.), a top-selling herbal dietary supplement, is renowned for its wide range beneficial effects, particularly in the treatment and prevention of CVD".

In fact, data published after the year 2000 convincingly pointed out that garlic reduces cardiovascular risk substantially, through inhibition of abnormal plasma lipids, oxidized low-density lipoproteins (LDL), abnormal platelet aggregation and a high blood pressure.

These results of stimulating antioxidant, chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties and inhibiting hypertension, abnormal plasma lipids, oxidized low-density lipoproteins (LDL), abnormal platelet aggregation suggested that garlic may have a strong potential in normalized arteries and blood vessel function against the onset of cardiovascular disease.

Adding garlic into one diet can be helpful if accompanied with the intake of more vegetables, fruits and change of lifestyle in patients with CVD.
