Ovarian cysts affect women of all ages, especially during a woman's childbearing years. Most ovarian cysts are functional and benign but some can become cancerous.
Some ovarian cysts can cause bleeding and pain such as endometriomas/chocolate cysts and surgery is required for any cyst larger than 5 cms in diameter or if the cyst has interfered with the extruding of mature follicle.
Traditional Chinese medicine defines ovarian cyst as a medical condition caused by excess- dampness (caused by blood and fluid stasis) accumulated in the abdomen and gradually coalesces into phlegm, which can manifest ovarian cysts and chocolate cysts.
In conventional medicine, an ovarian cyst is a collection of fluid, surrounded by a very thin wall, within an ovary.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is endocrinologic diseases caused by undeveloped follicles clumping on the ovaries that interfere with the function of the normal ovaries as resulting of enlarged ovaries, leading to hormone imbalance( excessive androgen),
Epidemiologically, PCOs have been found to induce in male pattern hair development, acne, irregular period or absence of period, weight gain, and infertility.
More precisely, PCOs cause reproductive disorder(10(12)), risks of type 2 diabetes(9)(10)(11), metabolic syndrome(10)(12) and early cardiovascular disease(8)(13), acne(10)(14), endometrial cancer(18)(19),weight gain and obesity(15)(16)(17).
Unfortunately, according to studies, women with PCOs after the reproductive age, are associated to continuously increase the risk of type II diabetes, with no increasing altered glucose tolerance(20), CVD, and hypertension(21).
The condition affects over 5% of women population or 1 in 20 women.
Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.
The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of the endocrine disorder, researchers assessed the effectiveness and safety of omega-3 fatty acid for patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
The meta-analysis, data from randomized controlled trials included 9 trials involving 591 patients obtained to compare the effects of omega-3 fatty acid versus placebo or western medicine in women with PCOS.
According to the results of the analysis, compared to the control group, * Omega-3 fatty acid improved HOMA index associated with β-cell function and insulin resistance (IR) from basal (fasting) glucose and insulin or C-peptide concentrations.
* Furthermore, Omega-3 fatty acid was found to decrease TC and TG level [TC: (WMD -9.43; 95% CI -11.90, - 6.95; P<0. 00001); TG: (WMD -29.21; 95% CI -48.08, - 10.34; P = 0. 002)], which were levevated in patients with PCOS.
* Additionally, omega-3 fatty acid increases adiponectin level secreted by adipose tissue which was lows in PCOs compared to normal subjects.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "omega-3 fatty acid may be recommended for the treatment of PCOS with insulin resistance as well as high TC (especially LDL-C) and TG".
Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the treatment of PCOS, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Gamma-linolenic Acid Ameliorates the Symptoms of Diabetic Neuropathy
Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.
In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.
Most common types of diabetes are
* Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, the most common form diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.
* Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.
Diabetic neuropathy is a complication of patients with diabetes associated with nerve damages, ranging from pain and numbness in your legs and feet to problems with your digestive system.
Most cases of diabetic neuropathy are involved in diabetics who have a history of hyperglycemia caused by long-term high levels of glucose in the bloodstream, urinary tract, blood vessels, and heart.
Diabetic neuropathy can be classified into 4 main types, including.
* Peripheral neuropathy is the most common type of diabetic neuropathy, affecting the nerves that control the feet and legs first, followed by the hands and arms.
* The autonomic neuropathy that affects the nerves that control the heart, bladder, stomach, intestines, sex organs and eyes.
* Radiculoplexus neuropathy found mostly in older patients affects nerves that control the thighs, hips, buttocks, or legs.
* Mononeuropathy, or focal neuropathy also found commonly in older patients affects the nerves that control the face, middle of the body (torso), or leg.
The exact causes of diabetic neuropathy are totally depending on the type of neuropathy. However, damage of nerves and blood vessels in the affected area has been found to induce by overtime, uncontrolled high blood sugar.
Gamma-linolenic acid is a phytochemical in the group of Omega-3, 6,9 fatty acids, belongings to the class of Lipids, found abundantly in evening primrose, borage, blackcurrant, etc.
On finding a potential plant that processes anti-diabetic activity, researchers examined the effect of gamma-linolenic acid on diabetic complications of neuropathy.
A multicenter, parallel-group, double-blind, double-dummy, randomized, noninferiority joint study include the evaluation of the efficacy and safety of γ-linolenic acid (GLA) relative to α-lipoic acid (ALA) over a 12-week treatment period in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) was conducted.
According to the results of the analysis of 100 T2DM patients between 20 and 75 years of age who had painful DPN and received either GLA (320 mg/day) and placebo or ALA (600 mg/day) and placebo for 12 weeks,* There was a significant decrease in the mean visual analog scale (VAS) and the total symptom scores (TSS). scores compared to baseline in both groups, but there were no significant differences between the groups.
* The treatment difference for the VAS (95% confidence interval [CI]) between the two groups was -0.65 (-1.526 to 0.213) and the upper bound of the 95% CI did not exceed the predefined noninferiority margin (δ₁=0.51).
* For the TSS, the treatment difference was -0.05 (-1.211 to 1.101) but the upper bound of the 95% CI crossed the noninferiority margin (δ₂=0.054).
* There were no serious adverse events associated with the treatments.
Collectively, researchers said, "GLA treatment in patients with painful DPN was noninferior to ALA in terms of reducing pain intensity measured by the VAS over 12 weeks".
Taken altogether, gamma-linolenic acid may be considered a functional food for reducing the painful diabetic neuropathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Lycopene Inhibits Asthma-COPD Overlap Syndrome (ACOS)
Lung protection is an action in which substances, including herbal remedies, are used to protect the lung against injury or damage.
The lungs are a pair of organs located on either side of the chest (thorax) with a function to bring fresh oxygen into the body and remove the carbon dioxide and other waste gases from the body.
According to the statistics provided by the Lung Association over 3 million Canadians are affected by one of five serious respiratory diseases – asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, tuberculosis (TB), and cystic fibrosis.
In 2017, 28,600 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer, represented 14% of all new cancer cases. Lung cancer caused the death of 21,100 Canadians in the same year.
The exact causes of lung disease are not identified. However, epidemiological studies suggested
being overweight, smoking, family history, smoking are some of the most prevalent factors associated with the onset of the disease.
Most common lung diseases in North America including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and cystic fibrosis.
Asthma is a medical and chronic condition characterized by the long-term inflammation of the airways of the lungs.
The most common symptoms of asthma are episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, and reversible airflow obstruction and bronchospasm.
Asthma attack in most cases is triggered by exposure to various irritants and substances that trigger allergies (allergens). However, genetic preposition and family history are also found in patients with asthma.
Asthma not only interferes with daily activities and also can lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. Treatment of asthma is to reduce the frequent episode and severity of the attacks.
According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the US, 1 in 13 people have asthma. In other words, over 26 million Americans have asthma and half of that is children.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a type of lung disease associated with long-term breathing problems and poor airflow, leading to shortness of breath and cough with sputum production.
COPD is a progressive disease and the third leading cause of death in the United State. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the third leading cause of death in the US.
Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,
Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of asthma researchers examined the effects of ascorbic acid (AA), carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin, α-carotene, β-carotene, and lycopene), retinol and α-tocopherol levels in patients with allergic asthma compared to healthy elderly in Japanese.
Based on the tested analysis, compared to other phytochemicals, plasma AA level was significantly lower in allergic asthma subjects than that of healthy elderly people.
Levels of plasma lycopene and total carotenoid levels and levels of antioxidant enzymes such as GSH content produced the host was significantly lower in COPD subjects compared to those of healthy elderly people.
However, levels of plasma lycopene, and total carotenoid levels showed no effects in the redox markers such as GSSG, GSH/GSSG ratio associated with the oxidative stress in the lung tissues.
In other words, there is no difference between the redox markers such as GSSG, GSH/GSSG ratio in both groups.
Furthermore, lycopene and total carotenoid levels did not lower the marker of the levels of urinary 8-OHdG detected between ACOS and BA subjects compared to healthy elderly people.
Increased the levels of lycopene and total carotenoid levels in the body do not have a significant impact in reducing the risk of ACOS and BA
Based on the findings, researchers said, "COPD of Japanese patients may develop partly because of oxidative stress derived from a shortage of antioxidant nutrients, especially of AA and lycopene as well as GSH while this may not be the case in both ACOS and BA.".
Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may not be considered a remedy for the prevention of overlap syndrome (ACOS) and/or bronchial asthma (BA), pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Fermented Soy, the Natural Antioxidant
Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit free radicals.
Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) is a measure that assesses the antioxidant status and evaluates the antioxidant response against the free radicals produced in a patient.
Free radicals are unstable atoms with an unpair of electrons on the out ring of molecules. Therefore, in order for them to become stable, they constantly seek to donate or intercept the electron from other stable atoms, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until all unpaired electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
In spite of free radicals harmful effects, one must understand that cellular oxygen species (ROS), are necessary with a moderate amount to protect our body in the mediation of antimicrobial infection, detoxification of potentially toxic compounds, and elimination of cancerous and other life-threatening cells through cytotoxicity.
Free radicals such as nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase, myeloperoxidase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase and antioxidants such as glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) also act on specific oxidative pathways involving both pro-oxidant and antioxidant enzymes to maintain the healthy ratio in the body.
Normally, in a healthy individual, antioxidant enzymes produced by the liver are more than enough to counter levels of free radicals in the body. However, people with weakened immune system intake of dietary antioxidant or antioxidant supplements may be necessary.
Oxidative stress is a medical condition caused by the unbalanced ratio of the levels of free radical and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.
In fact, free radicals exist everywhere including the airs we breathe, the thing we eat and the environment we contact, particularly, cell metabolism in the body.
Epidemiologically, overexpression of free radicals has been found to induce damage to the cell, lipid, proteins, and alternation of cell DNA, leading to chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and particularly, cancer.
Fermented soy products are diverse varieties of soy food that are made from fermented soybeans, including miso, natto, tempeh, and soy sauce.
On finding a potential plant that processes anti-oxidative stress activity, researchers examined the relationship between in vitro antioxidant capacity of soy sauces and its impact on lipid oxidation in raw and cooked beef patties during 10 days of refrigerated storage.
According to the results of the analysis of 3 commercial soy sauces including industrially fermented soy sauce (IS), traditionally fermented Korean soy sauce (KS), and mixed soy sauce (MS),
* In vitro antioxidant capacity, KS showed the highest total phenol content, whereas IS and MS had a higher Fe2+ chelating activity than KS (P < .05).
* Heat treatment decreased total phenol content but increased Fe2+ chelating activity of soy sauces (P < .001).
* In both raw and cooked beef patties, the addition of IS or MS caused a lower 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) level than KS throughout the overall storage period (P < .05).
Collectively, researchers suggest, "the Fe2+ chelating activity of soy sauce may be one of the major mechanisms in preventing lipid oxidation in meat products".
Taken altogether, potato may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids Ameliorates the Symptoms of Anxiety
Anxiety is a psychological and physiological state triggered by feelings of fear, worry, uneasiness, and dread, etc.
The condition is a normal reaction to stress that allows a person to cope with the situation during an emotionally difficult time. But when anxiety symptoms escalate or become excessive, it can lead to anxiety disorder.
People experience anxiety differently. Some people feel a sudden moment of anxiety just a bad feeling, it comes and goes, only lasting a short time. Depending on how people cope with the moments of anxiety, the events can be brief or last a few days.
However, in some persons, if anxiety does not go away, they may require treatment from the related field specialists.
Some researchers suggested that anxiety disorders are conditions associated with the combination of biological, psychological, and individual factors, and the most commonly reported psychiatric conditions and frequently occur as comorbid disorders.
According to the statistic, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the age of 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population every year.
The exact causes of anxiety disorders are debatable. However, a family history of anxiety recent or prolonged exposure to stress, excessive consumption of stimulants such as caffeine or tobacco is associated with the onset of the disorders.
The symptoms of anxiety disorders can be psychological or physical, including difficulty concentrating and sleeping, irritability, persistent stomachaches or diarrhea, sweaty palms, shaking, and rapid heartbeat.
Other patients may also experience frequent nervousness, restlessness, or being tense feelings of danger, panic, or dread rapid heart rate rapid breathing, or hyperventilation,..... you may have developed an anxiety disorder.
On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of psychological disorders, researchers investigated the efficacy of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) for anxiety symptoms compared with controls.
The study included the research of clinical trials involved in the anxiolytic effect of omega-3 PUFAs in humans, in either placebo-controlled or non-placebo-controlled designs found 104 selected articles with 19 entered the final data extraction stage.
Based on the differentiation of the selected articles including 1203 participants with omega-3 PUFA treatment (mean age, 43.7 years; mean female proportion, 55.0%; mean omega-3 PUFA dosage, 1605.7 mg/d) and 1037 participants without omega-3 PUFA treatment (mean age, 40.6 years; mean female proportion, 55.0%), the researchers found that
* The administration of omega 3 fatty acid showed an association between clinical anxiety symptoms among participants with omega-3 PUFA treatment compared with control arms (Hedges g, 0.374; 95% CI, 0.081-0.666; P = .01).
* Furthermore, in subgroup analysis, injection of Omega 3 fatty acid showed that the association of treatment with reduced anxiety symptoms was significantly greater in subgroups with specific clinical diagnoses than in subgroups without clinical conditions.
* Moreover, The anxiolytic effect of omega-3 PUFAs was significantly better than that of controls only in subgroups with a higher dosage (at least 2000 mg/d) and not in subgroups with a lower dosage (<2000 mg/d).
In other words, omega 3 fatty acid has a strong implication in reducing anxiety symptoms in a dose-dependent manner.
Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the treatment of anxiety, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Not Cooked Potato but French Fried that Elevates the Risk of Obesity and Type 2 diabetes
Chronic diseases are medical conditions that last more than 3 months depending on the type of diseases.
In other words, chronic diseases generally cannot be prevented or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear.
According to the statistics, chronic diseases affect millions of people worldwide, leading to the death of 35 million people in 2005, including many young people and those in middle age.
The most common types of chronic diseases in the Western world are cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.
Heart disease is a class of diseases associated with interruption of blood flow in the blood vessel or damage of the heart tissue, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction.
Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose due to either cell in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.
Some researchers also suggested that people with certain medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome. and high blood pressure is more prone to the onset of the disease.
The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are an increased thirst that won't stop with water intake, increased hunger (especially after eating), dry mouth, frequent urination, and unintentional weight loss.
Obesity is a medical condition caused by excess body fat accumulated to some extent that impacts personal health. The hallmark of obesity is attenuated metabolism and structural cell changes in the obese fat observed by reducing metabolic activity.
Potato is a genus Solanum, belongs to the family Solanaceae. The veggie is a good source of protein and according to the statistic, the annual diet of an average global citizen is about 33 kg (72.6 Lbs) of potato. It now is growing worldwide in a suitable climate for commercial profits and health benefits, thus its consumption is extremely variable and rapidly changing.
On finding a potential plant for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, researchers evaluated the relation between intake of potatoes and risks of obesity, T2D, and CVD in apparently healthy adults.
According to the search of the databases of MEDLINE, Embase, the Web of Science, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials involved in the intervention and prospective observational studies that identified a total of 13 studies, including 5 studies that were related to obesity, 7 studies that were related to T2D, and one study that was related to CVD,* The association between potatoes (not including french fries) and adiposity was neutral in 2 studies and was positive in 2 studies.
* For T2D, 2 studies showed a positive association, whereas 5 studies showed no or a negative association with intake of potatoes and T2D.
* For CVD, no association was observed.
Most importantly, French fries were positively associated with T2D and obesity in all studies.
Collectively, researchers said, "The identified studies do not provide convincing evidence to suggest an association between intake of potatoes and risks of obesity, T2D, or CVD"
And, "French fries may be associated with increased risks of obesity and T2D".

Phytochemical Tocopherols Inhibits Liver fibrosis Caused by Toxicity
The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.
The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes, and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.
Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reduction partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.
Hepatic fibrosis is a condition characterized by overly exuberant wound healing causing excessive connective tissue builds up in the liver. In other words, hepatic fibrosis is a portion of the liver which was affected by scars formation.
Since liver fibrosis is a very slowly progressive disease, people who carry the disease may not experience any symptoms until the advanced stage.
The exact causes of liver fibrosis are unknown. However, certain risk factors such as repeated liver injury caused by a virus infection, and a blockage in the bile ducts are found to elevate on the onset of liver fibrosis. However, not all people with the virus will develop liver fibrosis.
Long-term untreated liver fibrosis can lead to cirrhosis, a condition of the severe scarring of the liver, and life-threatening liver disease.
The most common scale to grade the stage of liver fibrosis is the METAVIR scoring system. By examing the grade and stage of liver fibrosis of patients, their doctors can now determine the degree of severity to which patients' liver is affected.
According to a statistic from John Hopkins Medicine(2),
* Cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases are common disease-related causes of death in the U.S. Approximately 31,000 people in the U.S. die each year from cirrhosis.
* Approximately 3.5 to 4.6 million people in the U.S. are chronically infected with the hepatitis C virus. About 2,000 people die of hepatitis C annually in the U.S.
And,
* Hepatitis B kills approximately 2,000 people in the U.S. annually, and 85,000 to 2.2 million people in the U.S. are infected with the virus.
Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.
On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the efficacy of combined administration of alpha-tocopherol (AT) and ascorbic acid (AA) in ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity.
Rats selected for the study were grouped into I-control rats, II-ethanol, III-alpha-tocopherol, IV-ethanol+alpha-tocopherol, V-AA, VI-ethanol+ascorbic acid, VII-alpha-tocopherol+ascorbic acid, VIII-ethanol+alpha-tocopherol+ascorbic acid for 90 days.
According to the tested analysis, all parameters associated with toxication which were elevated in the ethanol group were significantly reduced by the administered AT and AA in combination.
Furthermore, the levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the rats which were reduced by ethanol administration were enhanced on combined administration of AT and AA.
Hepatic fibrosis induced by the ethanol toxicity was over 20% lower in the AT and AA co-administered group compared with AT and AA alone treated groups.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Combined administration of fat-soluble AT and water-soluble AA was beneficial against ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity. This may be due to their different subcellular localizations".
Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of liver fibrosis caused by toxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Comfrey(Symphytum officinale L.) Promotes Bone Density in Vivo
Bone is a hard whitish tissue making up the skeleton in humans which provides a framework for the attachment of muscles and other tissues.
Bone density is the amount of bone mineral in bone tissue. Loss of bone density is found to induce osteoporosis.
Bone density is measured by the young adult bone density mean within 1 standard deviation (+1 or −1). The negative T-score is an indication of loss or lower bone density and the T-score of −2.5 or lower is an indication of osteoporosis.
Risk factors of losing bone density include gender, (women are more likely to develop osteoporosis compared to men) the increase in age, race, (African Americans have both lower rates of bone density loss and osteoporosis), family history.
People with low bone mass accompanied by progressive bone density loss over time are associated with an increased risk of developing osteoporosis.
Low bone mass is a risk factor of osteoporosis, The condition may also increase the incidence of bone fracture if it is accompanied by other risk factors.
Osteoporosis is a condition of thinning of bone and bone tissues as a result of the loss of bone density over a long period of time.
It is a widespread degenerative disease of skeletal joints and often associated with senescence in the vertebrates due to excessive or abnormal mechanical loading of weight-bearing joints, arising from heavy long-term use or specific injuries.
If you experience symptoms of lower back pain, loss of height over time, a stooped posture, easy bone fracture, neck and back pain,..., you may have osteoporosis.
Truly, bone diseases in children have been found to affect normal growth and development that can lead to weakness and/or deformity.
Comfrey is a perennial plant in the genus of Symphytum, belonging to the family Boraginaceae, native to Europe. It has been used in herbal and traditional medicine to ease excessive bleeding or on open wounds, relieve pain and swollen, treat circulation issues, reduce cholesterol, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of osteoporosis, researchers investigated the effect of Symphytum officinale (Comfrey) in homeopathic potency (6cH), on the removal torque and radiographic bone density around titanium implants, inserted in rats tibiae.
Selected rats induced loss of bone density in the study were randomized into a group of control and group treated by S. officinale 6cH.
According to the evaluation at 7, 14, 28, and 56 days post-implantation, removal torque of the implants rats treated the S. Officinale 6cH showed to enhance bone formation around the micro-implants at 14 days.
At 56 days, the radiographic bone density was higher in the treated group, compared to control.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " S. Officinale 6cH enhances, principally at the early stages of osseointegration, bone formation around titanium implants in rats' tibiae, based on the radiographic and mechanical analysis.".
Taken altogether, Comfrey combined with other herbal medicine may be considered a remedy for the promotion of bone density, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Brassica Oleracea Vegetables and Juices Inhibits the Onset of Breast Cancer in Vitro
Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.
The prevalence of breast cancer has been acknowledged in the scientific community worldwide. Breast cancer widespread in women in Southeast Asian as a result of over 2 decades of economic prosperity caused by an unhealthy diet is a major concern.
The women's breasts are made up of specialized tissue that produces milk (glandular tissue) and fatty tissue. The size of a women's breast is totally determined by the amount of fat.
Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the breast tissue.
Most cases of breast cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the breast tissue before spreading into deeper layers of the breast.
Breast cancer is first noticed as a painless lump in the breast or armpit and most often discovered by the women themselves.
Breast skin irritation or dimpling, nipple pain, nipple retraction (turning inward), redness, and scaliness that cannot be healed within 3 weeks are also the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.
According to statistics, the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.
People who inherited the genetic preposition of BRCA1 and 2 are associated with over 60% of the risk of breast cancer.
However, an unhealthy diet and lifestyle are some of the preventable risk factors that form a major cause of breast cancer onset.
In postmenopause, weight control is the major factor throughout life that appears to prevent breast cancer after menopause.
Daily physical activity and reduced intake of alcohol throughout life are associated with reduced risk of developing pre- and postmenopausal breast cancer, however, smoking during adolescence or early adulthood increases later risk of breast cancer.
Interestingly, in the depth discussion of the diet pattern in the risk of breast cancer, researchers do not find the direct link to breast cancer risk.
These results suggested by actively following a healthy lifestyle and moderate exercise, the risk of breast cancer can be decreased substantially.
Kale is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae, native to coastal southern and western Europe. The veggie leave is highly nutritious cultivated as foods in most part of Europe.
On finding a potent compound for the prevention and treatment of cancers, researchers examined the antiproliferative activity of juice obtained from leaves of several varieties of Brassica oleracea on both estrogen receptor (ER)-positive (ER+; MCF-7 and BT474) and ER-negative (ER-; MDA-MB-231 and BT20) human breast cancer cell lines.
At low concentrations to final concentration 5-15 mL/L,
* All cauliflower varieties tested suppressed cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner.
* Although no evidence of apoptosis was found, cancer cell growth inhibition was accompanied by significant cell death at the higher juice concentrations.
* All juices showed a preference in the inhibition of breast cancer cells compared with other mammalian cell lines, such as ECV304, VERO, Hep2, 3T3, and MCF-10A.
In the cell levels, all juices exerted the inhibition of proliferation associated with significantly reduced CDK6 expression and an increased level of p27 involved cell division and cell cycle arrest, respectively, in ER+ cells but not in ER- cells.
Based on the results, researchers said, "the edible part of Brassica oleracea contains substances that can markedly inhibit the growth of both ER+ and ER- human breast cancer cells, although through different mechanisms".
Taken altogether, kale, a member of cruciferous vegetables may be considered a functional food for the treatment of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cucumber's Cucurbitacin B (CuB), Promotes Antimicrobial Activity
Antimicrobial activity is the process that either kills or inhibits the microorganisms that induce damage to the body tissues.
In other words, antimicrobial activity is the process of killing or inhibiting the disease-causing microbes, including the use of antibiotics for the treatment of infectious diseases caused by bacterias and fungi.
Most common diseases associated with microbial infection include
* Diseases caused by bacteria are totally dependent on the types of bacterias, such as pneumonia, caused by Streptococcus and Pseudomonas, and foodborne illnesses caused by bacteria such as Shigella, Campylobacter, and Salmonella.
* Diseases caused by the virus include smallpox. the common cold and different types of flu. measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, and shingles. hepatitis. herpes and cold sores. polio. rabies, Ebola, and Hanta fever.
* Diseases caused by parasites are malaria, trichomoniasis, giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis, and toxoplasmosis.
* Diseases caused by fungi aspergillosis usually occurs in patients with lung diseases or weakened immune systems and Candidiasis is caused by the yeast Candida.
Depending on the types of microbial infection, most common symptoms are fever, diarrhea, fatigue, muscle aches, and coughing
The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.
With an aim to find a natural compound with antibiotic property, researchers investigated extracts purified by dialysis and ion exchange chromatography strategy antibacterial activity against four standard pathogenic bacterial strains.
According to the tested assays, the elute fractions 1 and 3 (370 mg/mL) showed the greatest antibacterial activity compared to elute fractions 2 and 4 (340 mg/mL).
Furthermore, among the bacteria utilized, E. coli was clearly the most sensitive compared to other strains.
Additionally, according to the bioassay-guided isolation from the chloroform fraction of the crude methanol extract of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) stems induced (2S,3S,4R,10E)-2-[(2'R)-2-hydroxytetra-cosanoylamino]-1,3,4-octadecanetriol-10-ene (1), 1-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl(2S,3S,4R,10E)-2-[(2'R)-2-hydroxy-tetracosanoylamino]-1,3,4-octadecanetriol-10-ene (2) and soya-cerebroside I (3), compound 1 showed a relatively low polarity aglycone but exhibited stronger antimicrobial activity than its corresponding glycoside 2.
Dr. Tang J, the lead scientist wrote, "The results indicated that sphingolipids could be the main antimicrobial compounds in the crude methanol extract of cucumber stems".
Taken altogether, cucumber processed a high amount of phytochemicals may be used for the treatment of bacterial infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Tocopherols Protect the Heart Against the Risk of Cardiovascular Diseases CVD
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.
In other words, anything that serves to damage the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart can be defined as a risk of heart disease.
The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the accumulation of plaques in the arteries, impeding the blood flow which carries the nutrients and oxygen to the heart, which causes damage to the heart tissue and reduced function of the arteries.
In other words, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, weight, depression, and family history associated with the early onset of plaques accumulated and impeding function of the arteries are the prevalent risk factors of cardiovascular diseases.
According to the statistics cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the US with 90% of women having one risk factor.
Believe it or not, women are 4 times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer and 2/3 of women are not aware of heart disease is such a risk for them, according to the Jean Hailes for Women Health in the article cardiovascular health.
According to statistics, heart disease is the second leading cause of death, claiming more than 48,000 lives every year.in Canada.
Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.
On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effect of tocotrienol on oxidative stress and inflammation in the manifestation of aging-related cardiovascular disease.
According to the analysis, vitamin E supplement demonstrated significant activity in reducing the expression of oxidative stress induced by chronic inflammation.
More precisely, the efficacy of vitamin E that decreases the oxidative stress-induced cardiovascular disease was attributed to the presence of chemical compounds tocotrienols and tocopherols
More precisely, tocopherols, a class of Vitamin E compounds showed a lesser antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activity compared to those of tocotrienols (the other class of Vitamin E compounds), in ameliorating aging-related cardiovascular diseases and its associated morbidities.
Based on the results, researchers said, "the potential of tocotrienols in improving inflammation, dyslipidemia and mitochondrial dysfunction in aging-related cardiovascular diseases...".
Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Broccoli' Sulforaphane, (SFN) Inhibited the Risk of Neutrophilic Airway Inflammation
Inflammation is the natural response of the immune system macrophages, the first line of defense in stimulating the production of inflammatory cytokines to protect our body against the infection caused by foreign microorganisms during the acute phase of body damage and injury.
Truly, the main focus of inflammation is to repair damage and injury.
Most cases of infection associated with inflammation are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.
Any inflammation that lasts more than 3 months is considered chronic inflammation.
Chronic inflammation is the result of the immune system's inability to kill off all the microorganisms participated in the acute phase of infection, leading to the forming of autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases such as RA and diabetes.
Inflammation also can be caused by overexpression of free radicals compared to the antioxidant enzymes in the body. This result can lead to an imbalance of the ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidants, the major cause of oxidative stress.
Airway inflammation is a lung inflammatory caused by both allergens and immune mistakenly attacks the respiratory tissues.
Chronic airway disease predominantly asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been increased at an alarming rate in the US over the past 20 years.
According to the statistics provided by the WHO, globally, approximately 65 million people suffer from the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), causing the death of 3 million each year. and 334 million people suffer from asthma, affecting 14% of all children globally.
In the US, the prevalence of chronic airway disease was found to cause a major financial burden to society, with both direct and indirect costs.
Neutrophilic airway inflammation is a severe condition that play s a role in the progression of persistent airflow limitation in asthma and raises the possibility that this progression and the development of COPD.
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.
With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases, researchers examined the effect of sulforaphane, an active compound of broccoli anti-airway inflammation
The study included 16subjects that were randomized, and fifteen subjects completed all visits.
According to the tested analysis, 3 days of broccoli sprout homogenate (BSH) significantly increased levels of SFN (p = 0.001) and its major metabolites. However, the BSH supplementation group showed no significant difference in sputum neutrophilia compared to the placebo.
Despite significantly increased plasma levels of SFN in the BSH group, post-O3 gene expression of NRF2 and phase II antioxidant defense genes in NECs and peripheral blood were not significantly different from placebo.
In other words, SFN with broccoli sprout homogenate in healthy human subjects did not induce the expression of antioxidant genes, NRF2.
Furthermore, BSH induced high levels of SFN does not protect against neutrophilic airway inflammation in an ozone-exposure model.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, " These contradictory results may be due to different systemic levels of SFN achieved with dietary supplementation with BSH, which is not standardized"
And "However, because variability exists in the timing and methods of detection for SFN conjugate levels, it is difficult to compare systemic SFN levels across studies".
In other words, SFN protected the integrity of the neurons against neuron damage through it's anti-neuroinflammatory and neuroprotective activities.
Taken altogether, broccoli sprouts processed abundantly SFN may not be considered supplements for the prevention of neutrophilic airway inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Potatoes (Solanum), the Anti-Inflammatory Functional Food
Inflammation is a natural defense of the immune system that protects the body against the insult from the foreign invasion.
Acute inflammation occurs quickly or within the hours and lasts a few days or weeks and the damaged tissues are healed themselves after all pathogens are killed off.
Truly, the main focus of inflammation is to repair damage and injury.
Most cases of infection associated with inflammation are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.
However, overexpression of inflammatory cytokines in most cases can cause improper healing with scar formation or the death of nearby cells.
Any inflammation that lasts more than 3 months is considered chronic inflammation.
However, if the immune system can not completely eradicate all invaders in the acute phase of infection, it will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a major cause of cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and diabetes.
Chronic inflammation also can be caused by overexpression of free radicals compared to the antioxidant enzymes in the body. This result can lead to an imbalance of the ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidants, the major cause of oxidative stress.
Chronic inflammation is a low-grade inflammation caused by the inability of the immune system to eliminate the invasive pathogens that occurred in the acute phase of infection.
However, people with a weakened immune system, acute inflammatory progression cannot be stopped due to the inability of the immune system to destroy all invaders, which may lead to low-grade chronic inflammation.
Longer-term oxidative stress in the body can also cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, including lipids, proteins, DNA damage.
Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune property to curb foreign pathogens.
On finding a potential plant that processes anti-inflammatory activity researchers examined the pharmacological potential of dehydrated potatoes om inflammation.
On the bioaccessible peptides that were fractionated on tested intestinal epithelial cells (IEC-6) under oxidative and inflammatory conditions,
* The tested peptide fractions demonstrated a significantly inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor-α release and cycloxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase expression.
* The tested peptides also showed significant antioxidant activity against the inflammatory process by inhibiting the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from mitochondria, and nitrotyrosine formation, and increasing the antioxidant response by heme oxygenase-1 and superoxide dismutase expression.
* Moreover, the peptide fractions showed a significant increase in the wound repair in IEC-6 activity through its anti-inflammatory property.
Collectively, researchers said, "The obtained results indicate the anti-inflammatory potential of dehydrated potatoes at the intestinal level".
Taken altogether, potatoes may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale), the Potential Anti-Gastric/Stomach Cancer Herbal Medicine
The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and important organ of the digestive tract.
The stomach plays a critical role to assist the digestive system in digesting foods by secreting acid and enzymes.
Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ.
Stomach cancer is a condition of abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.
According to the statistics, most cases of gastric/stomach cancer are found in older people. The average age of people when they are diagnosed is 68. The risk of developing gastric/stomach cancer in a man lifetime is about 1 in 95.
Most patients with stomach cancer in the early stage are asymptomatic.
However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of pain and/or discomfort in the stomach area, mild ache in the upper part of the body, difficulty swallowing, feeling full or bloated after a small mealy, and vomiting blood or having blood in the stool accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, including unintentional weight, loss, loss of energy, tiredness, nausea, and vomiting and loss of appetite.
The causes of gastric cancer are debatable, but some researchers suggested that people with chronic
gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), a condition caused by the frequent backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, is the most likely to develop the disease.
Other diseases associated with the early onset of gastric cancer are obesity and smoking.
According to the Universidad de Salamanca, bacteria and viruses, including Helicobacter pylori are strongly associated with chronic gastritis, clinical syndromes, precancerous lesions, and pathogenesis of gastric cancer development.
Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, scientists examined the effects of dandelion root extract (DRE) on gastric cancer.
According to the tested assays,
* Dandelion root extract (DRE) specifically and effectively suppresses proliferation and migration in human gastric cells without inducing toxicity in noncancerous cells.
* Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are known to promote tumorigenesis in many cancer types are downregulated by the injection of DRE, including the lncRNA colon cancer-associated transcript-1 (CCAT1) in the promotion of tumor progression.
* More importantly, the downregulation of CCAT1 was found to inhibit the proliferation and migration of gastric cells.
Based on the results, researchers suggest, "DRE exerted its function in GC cells partially through targeting CCAT1. This data will provide a basis on which further research in cancer treatment through DRE can be executed".
Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the treatment of gastric cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Broccoli' Sulforaphane (SFN), a Natural Chemo-Preventive Phytochemical
Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.
Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.
However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.
Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.
According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.
Chemo-drugs are a class of conventional medicine used for the treatment of cancers. including 5-fluorouracil, 6-mercaptopurine, cytarabine, gemcitabine, and methotrexate.
Compared to other treatments, chemotherapy targets cancer's specific genes, proteins, or the tissue environment that contributes to cancer growth and survival.
Chemo drugs have been found to improve the survival rate of cancer patients. However, they also induce significant side effects.
The most common side effects of chemo-drugs are fatigue, hair loss, easy bruising, and bleeding. infection, anemia (low red blood cell counts) nausea and vomiting, appetite changes, and constipation.
The side effects of chemo drugs are the results of damage to the healthy blood-forming cells in the bone marrow, hair follicles, and cells in the mouth, digestive tract, and reproductive system.
According to the American Cancer Society, some chemo drugs have also been found to damage cells in the heart, kidneys, bladder, lungs, and nervous system.
Chemoprevention is the use of a medication, vitamin, or supplement to prevent the initiation of cancer.
On finding a potential plant for the treatment of cancers, researchers compared the effects of
Brassica family of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli is a rich source of isothiocyanates, sulforaphane (SFN) as chemopreventive phytochemical.
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.
According to the differentiation, sulforaphane (SFN) exerted its potent chemopreventive agent based on its ability to target multiple mechanisms within the cell to control carcinogenesis.
More precisely, anti-inflammatory, pro-apoptotic, and modulation of histones are some of the more important and known mechanisms by which SFN demonstrates chemoprevention.
Furthermore, The effect of SFN on cancer stem cells is another area of interest that has been explored in recent years and may contribute to its chemopreventive properties.
Based on the results, researchers said, "In this paper, we briefly review structure, pharmacology and preclinical studies highlighting chemopreventive effects of SFN".
Taken altogether, broccoli consists of SFN may be considered a chemopreventive functional food, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Pinto beans (Phaseolus) Lowers Non-HDL Cholesterol Levels in Vivo
Cholesterol is a waxy substance carried around by lipoproteins, that do not mix with water-based blood in our body.
Cholesterol is needed for our body to build cell walls and make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts that help to digest fat, particularly in the building of strong cell membranes. However, too much of it can be dangerous because cholesterol cannot dissolve in your blood.
There are 2 types of cholesterol. The low-density lipoprotein is also known as bad cholesterol which performs the aforementioned activity in the right levels and high-density lipoprotein which returns cholesterol back to the liver for reuse.
However, overexpression of cholesterol can cause plaque building up on the arterial wall, leading to arterial narrowing, wall stiffness, and hardening, some major causes of heart disease and stroke.
Although high blood cholesterol does not induce any symptoms, a prolonged period of uncontrolled high blood cholesterol can cause complications of chest pain, the early sign of coronary artery disease, heart attack,.... and stroke.
According to medical guidelines, the normal goal of non-HDL cholesterol levels should be 30 mg/dL higher than the LDL cholesterol level.
For example, if your non-HDL cholesterol level= LDL cholesterol.+ 30 mg/dL = 130 mg/dL and your HDL is 40 mg/dL = Non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio of 3.25, the ideal range of the ratio.
The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 (LDL)/1 (HDL). If you have a number that lowers than 4, you have healthy blood cholesterol.
Hyperlipidemia is one member of the cluster conditions of metabolic syndrome, therefore, if you have a number that is higher than 4, your risk of cardiovascular is increased compared to people with healthy levels.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with high blood cholesterol, scientists examined the changes in cholesterol metabolism in response to whole pinto beans (wPB) and their hulls (hPB) supplemented into a diet rich in saturated fat in hamsters.
Pinto bean is also known as common bean, genus Phaseolus and the family Fabaceae. It has a mottled appearance of darker reddish-brown spots on a lighter brownish beige background, thus appearing painted or spotted.
The study included forty-four 9-wk-old male Golden Syrian hamsters that were randomly assigned to 4 diet groups (n = 11), including a 5% (wt:wt) fat diet [normal-fat diet (NF)], a 15% (wt:wt) fat diet [diet rich in saturated fat (HSF), saturated fatty acids accounted for 70% of total fatty acids], or HSF supplemented with 5% (wt:wt) wPB or 0.5% (wt:wt) hPB for 4 wk.
According to the plasma, liver, intestinal, and fecal samples that were collected to evaluate multiple cholesterol markers and gene targets,
* The plasma non-high-density lipoprotein (non-HDL) concentration was significantly reduced in the wPB- and hPB-supplemented groups by 31.9 ± 3.5% and 53.6 ± 3.2%, respectively, compared to the HSF group (P < 0.01), to concentrations comparable with the NF group
* The wPB-supplemented hamsters had significantly lower liver cholesterol (45.1%, P < 0.001) and higher fecal cholesterol concentrations (94.8%, P = 0.001) than those ofthe HSF froup.
* The expressions of hepatic 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase (Hmgcr) and small intestinal acyl-coenzyme A: cholesterol acyltransferase 2 (Acat2) associated with the elevation of blood cholesterol were significantly decreased in animals administered wPB (by 89.1% and 63.8%, respectively) and hPB (by 72.9% and 47.7%, respectively) compared to the HSF-fed counterparts (P < 0.05).
Based on the results, researchers suggest, "Pinto beans remediated high cholesterol-induced by HSF in male hamsters by decreasing hepatic cholesterol synthesis and intestinal cholesterol absorption, effects which were partially exerted by the hulls".
Taken altogether, Pinto beans may be considered s functional for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Broccoli' SFN Protects the Lung Against Lung Cancer in Vitro
The lung formed part of the circulatory system plays an essential and unique role in taking oxygen to the blood and exhaling carbon dioxide from the blood.
Additionally, the lung also processes other ability in protecting our body against disease, including
* By balancing the pH levels, the lung protects the body against the accumulation of too much carbon dioxide. High levels of carbon dioxide are known to induce acidity in the body.
* By removing small blood clots the lung protects the body against the forming air embolisms.
* The airflow produced by the lung also help us to speak.
* The lung also protects the infection through the secretion of immunoglobulin A.
Any part of the lung injury can reduce lung function, leading to either obstructive or restrictive lung diseases or mixed lung disease, depending on a person's breathing.
Lung cancer is a chronic and medical condition characterized by abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue.
A most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells.
The exact cause of lung cancer is not identified. However, epidemiologically, smoking, second smoke, exposure to certain chemicals, family history, people who have lung disease and excessive drinking are some prevalent factors associated with lung cancer developing.
According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, lung cancer accounts for 14% of all new cancers diagnosed in the US. In 2018, there were about 234,030 new cases of lung cancer (121,680 in men and 112,350 in women). Lung cancer also causes the death of 83,550 in men and 70,500 in women in the same year.
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.
With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the chemopreventive role of SFN through the inhibition of histone deacetylase (HDAC) associated with regulation of DNA expression, in two different lung cancer cells by in vitro and in vivo mouse models.
According to the experimental results from A549 and H1299 lung cancer cells were treated with SFN for 48h,
* SFN inhibited HDAC activity and increased the levels of acetylated histones H3 and H4 involved in cell death in all two lung cancer cells.
* Furthermore, SFN induced cancer cells apoptosis, increased the accumulation of cells at G0/G1 and G2/M and arrest cells at S phase.
* Moreover, SFN also suppressed lung cancer growth in a xenograft mouse model in vivo.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, " the chemopreventive effect of SFN is associated with inhibition of HDAC activity, thereby attenuating lung cancer growth. Therefore, these findings suggest that SFN may be a therapeutic agent for lung cancer through the inhibition of HDAC".
Taken altogether, broccoli processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for the prevention of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
