Mitochondrial dysfunction is a condition that affects the organelles in the generated energy for the cell.
More precisely, mitochondria perform cellular respiration, by taking nutrients from the cell, breaking it down, and turning it into energy.
Mitochondria are the cells that convert the food molecules into the energy in the body. Mitochondria produce 90 percent of the energy for the body function.
Furthermore, mitochondrial also plays a critical role to induce the older or damaged cells to release cytochrome C, which activates enzymes involved in cell apoptosis.
Moreover, mitochondria also play an essential role in calcium absorption and calcium release that regulates cellular metabolism, steroid synthesis, and hormone signalings.
The genetic proposition that causes mitochondrial dysfunction has been found to alter the process of mitochondria in converting oxygen and food to energy in some people.
Acquired mitochondrial dysfunction has been found in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, muscular dystrophy, Lou Gehrig’s disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Most common symptoms of mitochondrial dysfunction include poor growth, muscle weakness, muscle pain, low muscle tone, exercise intolerance, vision and/or hearing problems
learning disabilities, delays in development, mental retardation depending on the location of the infected cells.
Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,
Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.
With an aim to find a natural compound for the protection of mitochondrial function, researchers examined the effect of lycopene on preventing mitochondrial dysfunction during the d Galactosamine/lipopolysaccharide (d-GalN/LPS)-induced fulminant hepatic failure (FHF).
Based on the tested analysis, administration of d-GalN/LPS (300 mg and 30 μg/kg body weight, respectively) to the experimental rats showed a significant effect on several disturbances in mitochondrial function.
In other words, d-GalN/LPS administration not only increased the levels of lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxidation but also decreased the levels of mitochondrial antioxidants, tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle that release stored energy through the oxidation, and electron transport chain enzymes associated with cellular detoxification and the cellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) that provides energy to drive many processes in living cells,.
However, lycopene (10 mg/kg body weight for 6 days) pretreatment showed strong activity in attenuating the lipid peroxidation and prohibiting the excessive synthesis of hydrogen peroxide.
Furthermore, lycopene also inhibited the GalN/LPS-induced impairment in ATP production. Parameters associated with reduced mitochondrial function were effectively prevented by the lycopene administration.
More precisely, the mitochondrial protection of lycopene was mainly attributed to the strong antioxidant potential of its phytonutrient by preventing lipid peroxidation in the mitochondrial membrane.
Based on the results researchers said, "The carotenoid lycopene combatted oxidative stress, scavenged free radicals, prevented ROS generation, and inhibited the toxic effects of d-GalN/LPS during FHF".
Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of mitochondrial dysfunction, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Veggie Broccoli Inhibits Cardio-Risk Parameters in Diabetes
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a group of conditions associated with blood vessels and the heart.
According to the statistics provided by the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are the number 1 cause of death globally. Approximately, 17.9 million people died from CVDs in 2016, representing 31% of all global deaths.
Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.
In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.
Most common types of diabetes are
* Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, the most common form diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.
As of today, there is no cure for type 1 diabetes. Treatment is focusing on managing blood sugar levels with insulin injection, diet, and lifestyle change.
* Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.
The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are an increased thirst that won't stop with water intake, increased hunger (especially after eating), dry mouth, frequent urination, and unintentional weight loss.
* Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), similar to type 1 diabetes, is a slow-progressing form of autoimmune diabetes. The disease is caused by the pancreas inability to produce enough insulin, because of slowly die-off of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
LADA is also known as type 1.5 diabetes because the disease has characteristics of both type 1 (autoimmune in nature) and type 2 diabetes.
Therefore, LADA shares the same risk factors and symptoms similar to those type 1 and 2 diabetes
* Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that can occur during pregnancy, affecting between 3% and 20% of pregnant women.
Women with gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in later life.
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The vegetable has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.
On finding a potential plant that processes chronic diseases, researchers compared the effects of broccoli sprouts powder, as an alternative and complementary treatment, to those of standard triple therapy, as a common medical treatment in cardiovascular diseases (CVD) risk in patients with type 2 diabetes.
The study included 86 type 2 diabetic patients with positive H.pylori stool antigen test (HpSAg) who were randomized to receive one of the three following regimens:
* STT) Standard triple therapy (omeprazole 20 mg, clarithromycin 500 mg, amoxicillin 1000 mg, twice a day for 14 days),
* BSP) 6 g/d broccoli sprouts powder for 28 days, and
* Combination of these as STT + BSP. After 4 weeks of treatment.
Based on the results of the analysis of 77 participants who completed the study [STT (n = 28), BSP (n = 25), STT + BSP (n = 24)],
* Before treatment, the H.pylori eradication rates were 89.3%, 56.0% and 91.7% in STT, BSP and STT + BSP groups, respectively.
* After the treatment, both systolic and diastolic blood pressure significantly decreased in STT + BSP group (P < 0.05).
* Serum triglycerides and TG/HDL-C ratio increased in STT patients group (<0.05).
* Serum hs-CRP levels significantly decreased in the patients who were treated with BSP per se (3.0 ± 2.5 at baseline vs. 2.3 ± 2.1 after the treatment, P < 0.05).
Collectively, researchers said, "Compared to standard triple therapy, BSP regimen in addition to considerable effects on H.pylori eradication had also favorable properties on cardiovascular risk factors following the H.pylori eradication".
Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered a functional food for reducing the risk of CVD in diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry Balances the Population of Gut Microbiota
Gut microbiota or gastrointestinal microbiota, the complex community of microorganisms in our digestive tracts plays a critical role in a variety of metabolic functions, including produced vitamins, synthesized all essential and nonessential amino acids, and carried out biotransformation of bile.
The gut microbiota also maintains the key processes of nutrition-enhancing the digestive functioning, lipid, and energy metabolism by inducing the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), phenolics, and other molecules, and pathogen resistance by promoting the immune function.
In a healthy individual, the levels of gut microbiota are balanced that allow the body to function in an optimal way.
Overexpression of certain harmful bacteria in the gut such as E. coli can utilize a complex arsenal of virulence factors to colonize and persist in the intestine, leading to gut microbiota imbalance that facilitates the early onset of gastrointestinal diseases.
Balanced gut microbiota protects the intestinal structures and functions by attaching to the gut wall against the entry of pathogenic, enteroinvasive bacteria into the epithelial cells.
In the immune perspective, gut microbiota protects the intestines by alerting the immune response against foreign invasion through specific receptors, leading to an immune system in inducing the proinflammatory cytokines.
However, the imbalance of digestive gut microbiota has been found to induce a number of diseases, syndromes, and functional aberrations, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and wider systemic manifestations of disease such as obesity, and type 2 diabetes.
Imbalanced gut microbiota is found in obese patients, compared to healthy weight individuals.
Alterations in gut microbiota composition have been found in patients with a low-grade inflammatory state, leading to an increased risk of several diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease.
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
On finding a potential compound for the protection of the digestive functioning, researchers investigated the effects of cranberry extract (CE) in high fat/high sucrose (HFHS)-fed mice on the gut microbiota.
Selected C57BL/6J mice were fed either a chow or an HFHS diet. HFHS-fed mice were gavaged daily either with vehicle (water) or CE (200 mg/kg) for 8 weeks.
According to the results from differentiation,* CE treatment decreased liver weight and triglyceride accumulation in association with blunted hepatic oxidative stress and inflammation.
* More importantly, CE treatment lowered intestinal triglyceride content and alleviated intestinal inflammation and oxidative stress, similar to those in the liver.
* Interestingly, CE treatment markedly enhanced the ratio of gut microbiota by increasing the proportion of the mucin-degrading bacterium Akkermansia in the tested subjects.
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for balancing the ratio of the gut microbiota, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Elecampane (Inula helenium), Exerts Cytotoxic Effect on Cancer
Genotoxicity is the term associated with chemical agents that damages the genetic information within a cell, causing mutations of cell DNA, a major cause of cancer.
Not all genotoxicity is mutagenicity, However, all mutagens are genotoxic.
Cytotoxicity is the process that induces cell death through toxins.
In other words, cell cytotoxicity is the process to use certain chemicals or mediator cells to destroy living cells.
In cancers, cytotoxicity can be beneficial to humans by destroying the cancer cells and prevent them from proliferation.
However, cytotoxicity induced by oxidative stress due to the imbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the body can cause protein, lipid, and cellular damage that leads to chronic low-grade inflammatory diseases and cancer.
Stimulation of overexpression of free radicals and antioxidants production to induce cytotoxicity to the tumors can also cause cancer cell death without damage to nearby healthy cells.
Some researchers suggested that some plant pigment, including herbal medicine lipophilic secondary metabolites, process antioxidant properties in protecting healthy cells against cytotoxicity but also stimulating the expression of free radical cytotoxicity against cancer cells.
On finding a natural ingredient of the prevention and treatment of cancers, scientists examined the polyphenol fraction (IvE) isolated from Elecampane cytotoxic activities.
Elecampane, also known as Horse-heal (Inula helenium) is a perennial composite plant, genus nulla, belonging to Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe, and Asia.
The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine in treating bronchitis or emphysema, night sweats, pulmonary tuberculosis, irritating cough, catarrhal discharges, etc.
According to tested analysis,
* Overall, forty-three secondary metabolites were identified, including the main components caffeic acid and unusual dihydro benzofuran lignans and cinchonain-type phenols, and hydroxycinnamoyl flavonol glycosides.
* The polyphenol fraction (IvE) showed strong antioxidant activity.
* Furthermore, the fraction inhibits cell viability and mitochondrial redox activity of neuroblastoma, hepatoblastoma, and colon carcinoma cells.
* Most importantly, IvE-induced increase of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) to induce apoptosis without harming the healthy cells.
In other words, all phytochemicals found in the fraction work synergistically to exert cytotoxic and antioxidant activities against cancer cells.
Based on the results, researchers suggest, "The obtained results highlighted that inula leaves, nowadays even undervalued and unexplored, could be considered a renewable source of nutraceutical compounds.".
Taken altogether, Elecampane may be considered a remedy for the treatment of various types of cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Elder (Sambucus) Processes Anti-Antiviral Infection Activity
Infection is a condition caused by a harmful microbial invasion of the body tissues.
A viral infection is a disease caused by the successful entering and multiplying of a virus in the body.
Anti-viral effects are an act of certain substances to cause the destruction of a virus.
In the acute phase of viral infection, depending on the types of viruses, the viruses after entering the body start to attack the specific host cells.
Similar to bacterial infection, both infections shared common characteristics by spreading through coughing and sneezing by and contact with infected people, especially through kissing and sex.
However, the virus may also cause infection by entering the body through wound and cut. Most viruses are killed in the acute phase of the infection.
During this phase, the immune system stimulates the constriction of blood vessels in speeding up the production of blood palette to cover the wound and production of inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to fight off the bacterial and viral invasion.
The most common viruses that cause infection are hepatitis A, B, human papillomavirus (HPV) influenza. mumps, and rubella. People with a weakened immune system are susceptible to acute and chronic viral infections.
The cold and flu virus will attack the cells in the respiratory system and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS, will attack the white blood cells of the immune system,
The viral infection has been known to carry over some different stage, after successfully attaching to the host cell, the virus to release its mRNA into the host cell, leading to the recruit of the host cell's enzymes to accelerate the viral multiplying, then breaking free from the host cell to start the cycle all over again.
The battle between the immune white blood cell and viral invaders in most cases an in the flavor of the side of the immune system, the invaders are killed and the infection is healed.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, scientists examined the antiviral activity of Sambucus FormosanaNakai ethanol extract on human coronavirus NL63 (HCoV-NL63).
Elder or Common Elder, is a shrub or small tree of the genus Sambucus of 30 species, belonging to the family Adoxaceae, native to the temperate-to-subtropical regions of both the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere.
The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat constipation, colic, diarrhea, colds, flu, bronchial and upper-respiratory, irritation of the skin, rheumatism, etc.
According to tested analysis,
* The extract was less cytotoxic and concentration-dependently increased anti-HCoV-NL63 activities, including cytopathicity, sub-G1 fraction, virus yield (IC50 = 1.17 μg/ml), plaque formation (IC50 = 4.67 μg/ml) and virus attachment (IC50 = 15.75 μg/ml).
* Among the phenolic acid constituents in Sambucus FormosanaNakai extract, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, and gallic acid sustained the anti-HCoV-NL63 activity that was ranked in the following order of virus yield reduction: caffeic acid (IC50 = 3.54 μM) > chlorogenic acid (IC50 = 43.45 μM) > coumaric acid (IC50 = 71.48 μM).
* Caffeic acid significantly inhibited the replication of HCoV-NL63 in a cell-type independent manner and blocked the virus attachment (IC50 = 8.1 μM).
Based on the results, researchers suggest, "Sambucus Formosana Nakai stem ethanol extract displayed the strong anti-HCoV-NL63 potential; caffeic acid could be the vital component with anti-HCoV-NL63 activity. The finding could be helpful for developing antivirals against HCoV-NL63".
Taken altogether, Elder may be considered a remedy for the treatment of viral infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Eyebright (Euphrasia), A Natural Antimicrobial Herbal Medicine
The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprises the body's defense system against diseases. The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections.
Besides foods and nutritional supplements, herbs also play an important role in helping the immune system defend against viruses and bacteria attacks.
Infectious diseases are a medical condition caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi.
Most cases of infectious diseases are contagious by spreading directly or indirectly, from one person to another.
In other words, if you kiss, or are coughed or sneezed on by an infectious person, you are at risk of developing the same infectious disease.
According to the statistic provided by the World Health Organization, 3 infectious diseases were ranked in the top ten causes of death worldwide in 2016.
More precisely, lower respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, and tuberculosis induced 3.0 million, 1.4 million, and 1.3 million deaths, respectively.
Conventionally, most cases of infectious diseases except those caused by viruses are treated by antibiotics.
Microorganism, first observed by Anton van Leeuwenhoek in 1675 is a class of microscopic organisms, including a bacterium, virus, or fungus.
Believe or not, single-celled like bacteria, algae, and protozoa, or multicellular, such as algae and fungi can survive under all types of extreme environments.
And less than 1% of bacteria, can invade and cause infection and diseases.
Although the discovery of human antibiotics is medicines that kill or slow the growth of bacteria, however, overuses of the antibiotics have been found to induce microbial resistance to certain drugs.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, scientists examined the antimicrobial effects on the essential oil extracted from Eyebright, Euphrasia rostkoviana Hayne (Scrophulariaceae).
Eyebright is one of the species of flowering plants, genus Euphrasia, belonging to the family Orobanchaceae, native to Europe.
The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat eye infection and to relieve inflammation caused by colds, coughs, sinus infections, sore throats, and hay fever.
According to the analysis of eye infections induced by Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans,
* 70 constituents isolated from the essential oil that inhibited infection, the n-hexadecanoic acid (18.47%) was the main constituent followed by thymol (7.97%), myristic acid (4.71%), linalool (4.65%), and anethole (4.09%).
* The essential oil showed antimicrobial effect against all organisms tested with the exception of P. aeruginosa.
* Most importantly, the best activity was observed against all Gram-positive bacteria tested with the minimum inhibitory concentrations of 512 µg/mL.
Based on the results, researchers suggest, "This is the first report on the chemical composition of E. rostkoviana essential oil and its antimicrobial activity".
Taken altogether, Eyebright (Euphrasia) may be considered a remedy for the treatment of microbial infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) May Be Used for the Treatment of Migraine
Migraine headache is one most common headaches associated with a condition of a chronic neurological disorder of moderate to severe headaches.
Nausea usually develops gradually over 5–20 minutes and lasts for less than 60 minutes.
According to the Research Migraine Foundation, nearly 1 in 4 U.S. households includes someone with migraines.
Approximately, 12% of the population suffers from migraines including 18% of American women, 6% of men, and 10% of children experience migraines.
Migraine is most common between the ages of 18 and 44.
Sadly, 1 in 7 people in the world population will develop migraine headaches at some points in their lifetime. And, chronic migraine affects about 2% of the world population.
More precisely, if you are women your risk of migraine headache is 2 times higher in comparison to men.
Some patients during migraine attacks also suffer symptoms of visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, extreme sensitivity to sound, light, touch and smell, and tingling or numbness in the extremities or face.
Conventional medicine in reduced symptoms of pain during attacks such as Sumatriptan, Rizatriptan,..and Eletriptan may be effective but they may induce certain side effects, including gastrointestinal discomfort, dizziness, drowsiness,... and muscle weakness.
According to the International Headache Society, complications of migraine headaches can be divided into
* Chronic migraine
Chronic migraines are headaches in the absence of medication overuse, occurring on ≥15 days per month for ≥3 months, of which headaches on ≥8 days must fulfill the criteria for migraines and they continue over a long period of time.
* Status migrainosus
Status migrainosus is a condition of migraine episodes that persist for less than 3 days, but in most cases, there are periods of relative relief, but these generally last no longer than four hours.
* Persistent aura without infarction (PAWI)
Persistent aura without infarction (PAWI) is a rare complication of migraines with neurological and ophthalmological examinations.
* Migrainous infarction
Migrainous infarction is a rare complication after the usual attacks of migraines with aura.
* Migraine seizures
A migraine seizure is an epileptic seizure that follows a migraine with aura, meeting the definition for migraine with aura, and an epileptic seizure must occur within one hour of the migraine aura.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of headaches, scientists reviewed literature articles and relevant books using Web of Knowledge and SciVerse Scopus databases.
Devil's claw also known as the wood spider, is a plant of genus Harpagophytum in the family of Pedaliaceae, native to South Africa.
The plant has been used as an herb in traditional and herbal medicine to treat fever, rheumatoid arthritis, skin, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach and kidneys conditions, etc.
According to tested analysis, devil's claw-derived compounds show considerable promise as novel drugs in migraine prevention and treatment.
However, their antimigraine action was unknown.
And its safety has not been determined.
Based on the results, researchers suggest, "It is necessary to conduct more research to better understand their antimigraine action, to confirm their effectiveness and safety, and to introduce them into clinical practice".
Taken altogether, Devil's claw a number of phytochemicals compounds may be considered a remedy for the treatment of migraine, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Tocopherols Show to Inhibits the Risk of Mammary Cancer in Female Mice
Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.
Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.
According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.
The mammary gland located in the breasts of females is responsible for lactation, or the production of milk.
Both males and females have glandular tissue within the breasts, however, in females, the glandular tissue begins to develop after puberty in response to estrogen release.
A mammary tumor is a medical and chronic condition that originated from the milk-producing gland.
Most cases of the mammary cancer are first found in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the milk-producing gland, before penetrating deeper into the layers.
At the advanced stage, the malignant cancer cells can also travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
Epidemiologically, mammary cancer has been found to spread to the colon and the liver.
Most common risk factors of mammary cancer are similar to those of breast cancer, including, aging, physical inactivity, being obese or overweight, family and personal history, having a dense breast, radiation therapy, pregnancy history, genetic proposition, particularly in women who had used drug diethylstilbestrol (DES).
Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.
On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the synergistic effect of lycopene and tocopherol against oxidative stress and mammary tumorigenesis.
According to the analysis from the administration of lycopene (Lyco) alone or combined with tocopherol (Lyco + Toco) for 90 days against a single oral dose of (50 mg/kg body weight) 7,12-dimethyl[a], benzanthracene (DMBA)-induced oxidative stress and mammary carcinogenesis in female rats,* There is a significant elevation in the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) in serum and breast tissues of DMBA-injected rats.
* The combined treatment (Lyco + Toco) group showed a potential reduction of these parameters more than Lyco alone group.
* Furthermore, Lyco alone showed significantly higher activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase.
In other words, the formation of tumor and angiogenesis in DMBA-induced rats and these abnormal changes were ameliorated by combined treatment with Lyco + Toco.
After talking about other factors into account, researchers said, "these results suggested that supplementation of the diet with Lyco and Toco provided antioxidant defense, with strong chemopreventive activity against DMBA-induced mammary tumors".
Taken altogether, tocopherols used alone or combined with lycopene may be considered adjunct therapies in the treatment of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Lycopene Processes a Strong Hepatoprotective Effect
The liver is the largest internal organ and the first line of the bodily toxin defense by filtering the blood from the digestive tract, before passing them to the rest of the body.
The liver also produces cholesterol that plays a critical role in building a strong cell wall, producing steroid hormones and vitamin D, and aiding the digestive function in food absorption and detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.
The hepatoprotective or liver protective effect is a process that maintains the healthy function of the liver against harmful toxins.
Toxic hepatitis that links to exposure to alcohol, chemicals, drugs or nutritional supplements that cause inflammation of the liver may be the most common liver toxicity in the US.
In the US, most cases of liver disease are a result of hepatitis viral infection and autoimmune diseases. Infectious viral hepatitis can produce toxins to protect them against the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body and prevent the attack of the systematic immune response.
Symptoms of liver diseases include jaundice, abdominal pain, and swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine, and pale stool color, and a tendency to bruise easily.
According to the statistic from the Canadian liver foundation, approximately, one in ten Canadians, or more than three million people, have some form of liver disease.
Believe it or not, chronic hepatitis B and C, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and liver cancer account for 95% of deaths in patients with liver disease.
On finding a potential compound for the prevention of liver injury, researchers examined the liver-protective effects of lycopene.
The study included BALB/c male mice divided into three equal groups: control, Concanavalin A (Con A), and Con A and lycopene with the control group mice received the only vehicle by intraperitoneal injection, the Con A group mice were given Con A, and group mice received Con A and lycopene.
Mice group treated by Con A showed a significant liver damaged observed by elevated levels of oxidative stress markers such as Con A administration increased histopathological damage, and the levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT).
Furthermore, Con A also stimulated the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-6, and immune response pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interferon (IFN)-γ and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α.
According to the analysis of the effect of lycopene on the Con A and lycopene group, all parameter associated with liver damage induced by Con A was significantly reduced by the administration of lycopene.
More importantly, lycopene not only inhibited the negative effect of Con A on the liver injury but also promoted the liver cell viability and cell growth.
In other words, lycopene processed anti-liver toxicity activity.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "The results of this study revealed that lycopene might be a useful hepatoprotective agent for reducing increased proinflammatory cytokine levels, and for increasing cell viability and cell growth".
Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the promotion of liver protection, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric Processes a Strong Anti-Inflammatory Activity
Inflammation is a systematic immune response during the acute phase of infection.
Macrophages are one of the lymphocytes and the first-line defense of the immune system.
Acute inflammation is a natural response of the immune system to protect the human body against harmful stimuli and pathogens.
Acute information is the first phase of injection. At this phase, after sensing the body injury by the central nervous system, the immune first line of defense stimulates the production of blood platelets to the cover the site of damage and pro-inflammatory to kill off pathogens that try to enter the body through the wound or damaged tissue.
Acute inflammation usually receded after a few days or weeks depending on the size and damage. However, if all pathogens were not eradicated after 3 to 8 weeks, the immune system will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a leading cause of chronic illness.
However, in some cases, overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines can cause the death of nearby healthy cells, leading to abnormal skin healing and the formation of irreversible scars.
Chronic inflammation is a result of a prolonged period of inflammation that lasts for several months and even years caused by the inability of the immune system to kill off all harmful microorganisms during the acute phase of infection.
Low-grade inflammation is a different type of chronic inflammation characterized by a production of the inflammatory cytokines in a low-grade state.
Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune property to curb foreign pathogens.
Conventionally, the most common use of anti-inflammatory medicines is over counter aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin), and other prescription NSAIDs.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the effect of a hot water extract of C. longa L. (WEC) containing anti-inflammatory agents, bisacurone, and turmerone on chronic inflammation.
The randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study included middle-aged and elderly subjects aged 50-69 years with overweight or prehypertension/mild hypertension assigned to consume 900 mg WEC tablets, containing 400 μg bisacurone, 80 μg turmeronol A and 20 μg turmeronol B (WEC group: n = 45), or placebo tablets without WEC (placebo group: n = 45) daily for 12 weeks.
Based on the experimental results, WEC treatment group showed a significant decrease in the serum levels of C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 associated with WEC anti-inflammatory activities.
Furthermore, the WEC group had significantly lower serum levels of glucose, hemoglobin A1c, and triglycerides, and higher serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, compared to the placebo group.
Moreover, according to the SF-36 score and PMOS and, WEC also improved the general health, vitality, mental health, mental summary component, and mood states (vigor-activity and friendliness, respectively.
Based on the results, researchers said, "WEC may ameliorate chronic low-grade inflammation, thus contributing to the improvement of associated metabolic disorders and general health".
Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or a combination with other phytochemicals may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green Bean Promotes Anti- Colon Cancer Activity in Vivo
Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of specific organs.
Most cases of primary cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of specific tissues and organs, before penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor.
At the advanced stage, the most malignant cancer cell can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis through blood and fluids circulation.
The colon formed a part of the digestive system is involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and broken down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.
Colon cancer is a chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth in the colon tissue. Most cases of colon cancer start with the alternation of cells DNA on the surface of the inner lining colon tissue before proliferating into deeper tissues to form a tumor.
Colon cancer is relatively very common, slowly growing and progressing cancer.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, colorectal cancer including colon and rectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States.
The lifetime risk of colon cancer developing is approximately 1 in 23 for men and women, including 71% of colon and 29% of rectal cancer. Believe it or not, only 39% of colon patients are diagnosed with localized-stage disease.
The exact causes of colon cancer are unknown. However, some researchers suggested the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may have a strong impact on the induction of colon cancer developing.
Dr. Milly Ryan-Harshman said, "Consumption of red meat might be related directly to the incidence of CRC or indirectly because a diet high in meat tends to be low in vegetables, fruit, and fiber".
And, "Evidence that diet has an effect on the incidence of CRC is only moderate and might be affected by the multifactorial nature of CRC. Making appropriate choices across food groups, particularly with respect to fruit, vegetables, and fiber, is the key to healthy eating".
Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 different species, belong to the family Fabaceae and native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.
On finding a potent compound that processes chemopreventive activity, researchers examined BN999, a fermentation product of soybean, black bean, and green bean mixture in the inhibition the growth of human colon cancer.
Application of the mixed product showed a significant effect on inhibiting the growth of mouse CT-26 colon cancer xenografts from a patient's tumor that was implanted into syngenic BALB/c mice, without causing obvious side effects.
Furthermore, BN999 induced apoptosis in colon cancer cells without affecting the healthy cells.
Based on the findings, researchers after taking into account co and confounder wrote, "these data suggest that BN999 has the potential to be used as cancer chemoprevention or therapeutic agent".
Taken altogether, green beans used combined with fermentation products of soybean, the black bean may be used as an adjunct therapy for the prevention of colon cancer, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry, a Natural Gingipain Inhibitor
Periodontitis is a severe stage of gingivitis that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports your teeth, leading to teeth loosen or tooth loss.
Systemic diseases are a group of condition that affects other parts of the body, or even the whole body.
The most common symptomatic disorders are high blood pressure that affects the brain and diseases associated with the circulatory system or systemic disease flu that affects the entire body.
An infection in the bloodstream is called a systemic infection.
Most common systemic diseases are
* Rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disorder as a result of inflammation, affecting mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body.
The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the ages of 40, causing the diminished quality of life of many elders(1). According to the CDC, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect over 52 million adults in the US alone, including 294,000 children under age 18 with some form of arthritis or rheumatic conditions.
Rheumatoid Arthritis can induce bone loss through elevating bone resorption without increasing bone formation.
* Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaques accumulated on the wall of the arteries, leading to narrowing the arteries in transporting oxygenated blood to the heart and other parts of the body.
Depending on the blood obstruction, atherosclerosis can induce different types of heart disease and stroke.
Plaque is the make of cholesterols, calcium, and other toxic substances, including cadmium.
* Sickle cell anemia
Sickle cell anemia (SCD), a genetic preposition form of anemia is a condition associated with not enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen throughout your body.
The red blood cells in sickle cell anemia patines are rigid and sticky with the shapes of sickles or crescent moons.
The normal red blood cells live for about 120 days compared to the sickle cells that die in 10 to 20 days. In other words, the inability of the body to replace the cell that dies rapidly with new blood cells is a cause of sickle cell anemia.
Other systemic diseases may include diseases of the heart, malignant neoplasms, cerebrovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, influenza, diabetes mellitus, trauma, Alzheimer's disease, renal diseases, septicemia, and liver diseases.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases that affect part or whole body, researchers investigated the cranberry and rice extracts effect on gingipains associated with
periodontitis and systemic diseases.
According to the tested results, the administration of cranberry and rice extracts interfere with gingipain activity and prevent the growth and biofilm formation of periodontopathogens.
In other words, the tested extract showed a gingipain inhibition that represents a novel approach to treat and prevent periodontitis.
The cranberry rice extract as a gingipain inhibitor may also help treat systemic disorders that are associated with periodontitis, including cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, aspiration pneumonia, pre-term birth, and low birth weight.
Taken altogether, cranberry combined with other herbal medicine may be considered a remedy for the treatment of systemic diseases in patients with periodontitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Most common systemic diseases are
* Rheumatoid arthritis
* Atherosclerosis
* Sickle cell anemia

Herbal Enchinanea Inhibits the Pathogenic E. Coli Infection
Bacterias are a class of microorganisms consisted of a single cell with a simple internal structure with a number of different shapes.
Not all bacterias are harmful to humans. Some are essential to human life, with benefits related to improve the digestive function, prevent overexpression of harmful disease-causing bacteria, and the synthesis of essential nutrients and vitamins.
Believe it or not, the human gut contains over 10 trillions of bacterias including at least 1000 different species of known bacteria with more than 3 million genes.
In a healthy individual, the levels of microorganisms in the gut are balanced.
The gut microbiota plays a critical role in breaking down foods that stomach and small intestines cannot digest, stimulating the production of vitamin K and D, protecting the intestinal against damage caused by bad bacteria and increasing the immune functioning.
Infectious diseases are a medical condition caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi.
The most common diseases associated with pathogenic Escherichia coli are cholecystitis, bacteremia, cholangitis, urinary tract infection (UTI), and traveler's diarrhea.
Conventionally, most cases of infectious diseases except those caused by viruses are treated by antibiotics.
Echinacea also is known as purple coneflowers, is a flowering plant of the genus Echinacea, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to eastern and central North America. The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat or prevent colds, flu, infections by stimulating the immune function, etc.
On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of infectious diseases, researchers examined the impact of dietary supplementation with Echinacea purpurea (EP) in broiler chickens infected by pathogenic E. coli.
The study included eighty-one-day-old chicks of both sexes, commercial Hubbard chicks, that were divided into 4 groups.
* The first was kept as normal control.
* The second was supplemented by EP (5 mg/kg feed) from the first day to the end.
* The third was infected orally by 1 ml E. coli O78 at 107 CFU intra-crop at 7 days old.
* The fourth group was supplemented by EP and infected by the E. coli O78 as previously described.
According to the analysis.
* Compared to E. coli-infected chicks that disclosed severe symptoms with mortality 30%, the infected and EP supplemented group showed less clinical symptoms and 15% mortality.
* EP-supplemented groups showed a significant improvement in their body weight compared to the infected group.
* More importantly, E. coli-infected chickens revealed a significant drop in lymphocytes' number with a significant elevation in monocyte and heterophils with non-significant changes in total leucocyte count when matched with group, while the fourth group revealed non-significant changes in total leucocyte with a significant drop in heterophils and monocyte and a significant elevation in the lymphocytes matching with the 3rd group.
* Furthermore, serum biochemical markers of the liver, kidneys, and immunological parameters showed severe adverse alterations associated with E. coli infection.
After talking about other factors into account, researchers said, "Dietary supplementations with Echinacea purpurea improve the final body weight and immune response of non-infected chicks and have a respectable effect for facing E. coli infection".
And "EP improves hematological and serum biochemical adverse effects occurred by E. coli infection. Histopathology of liver, kidneys, intestines, and spleen confirms these alterations".
Taken altogether, herbal Enchinanea may be considered adjunct therapies in the treatment of infectious diseases induced by E. coli, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Eyebright ( Euphrasia) Processes a Natural Antioxidant Activity
Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.
In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid, and cell damage.
Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outermost ring of the atom.
Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.
There are 3 main types of antioxidants found in nature, including
* Antioxidant enzymes produced by the host, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and catalases.
* Antioxidants vitamins, that may be injected from the dietary sources such as fruits and vegetables, including vitamins A, C, D, and E. Most antioxidant vitamins are considered free radical scavengers that gobble up free radicals before they can induce a cascade of damage.
* Antioxidant Phytochemicals found in the plant including second metabolites.
Antioxidants keep our bodies functioning properly by reducing the risk of diseases associated with oxidative stress.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of chronic low-grade inflammatory diseases, scientists examined the antioxidant activity of Euphrasia rostkoviana Hayne (Eyebright).
According to ABTS and DPPH decolorization assays, Fraction one isolated from the herbal medicine, dominated by a glycosylated caffeic acid derivative, exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity.
Furthermore, the most effective of IC50 concentrations were found to be 11.88 microg/ml and 4.24 microg/ml, respectively, compared to the investigated standards.
Additionally, the fractions of flavonoid glycosides proved to have a similarly strong, but lower effect compared to fraction one.
Most importantly, the scavenging reaction of the two radical cations was depending on to the IC50.
Taken altogether, eyebright may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the treatment of chronic low-grade inflammatory diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Elder (Sambucus) Processes Anti Leishmaniasis Herbal Remedy
A parasite lived on or in a host is an organism that gets its food at the expense of the host. Parasites are also completely dependent on the host for survivors, including lice, ringworms, pinworms, and scabies.
Believe it or not, over 70 percent of parasites are not visible to the human eye, such as the malarial parasite, However, some parasites such as worms can reach many meters in length.
The most common parasites can be classified into 3 main types
* Protozoa also known as single-celled eukaryotes in the formal term, is an organism that only can multiply, or divide, within the host but also often forms group into plant-like algae and fungus-like water molds and slime molds.
* Helminths are types of worm parasites including roundworm, pinworm, trichina spiralis, tapeworm, and fluke.
* Ectoparasites are parasites that can live outside the host such as lice and fleas.
Parasite infection can cause varying symptoms, depending on the severity and types of parasite. The most common symptoms are skin bumps or rashes, weight loss, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting, aches and pains, fatigue and tiredness, and general feeling unwell.
Conventionally, treatments are total depending on the types of parasitic infection, For example, medicine such as praziquantel (Biltricide) can cause the tapeworms to detach from the gut, become dissolved, and then pass out of the body.
Treatments are effective in most cases if the parasite is identified.
Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by an intracellular protozoan parasite (genus Leishmania) associated with a bit of a female phlebotomine sandfly.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of parasitic diseases, scientists compared the effect of different concentrations of the extract on Sambucus ebulus leaf and fruit extracts on Leishmania major in vitro.
According to tested analysis, the most effective of IC50 concentration of leaf and fruit extracts that inhibit the tested parasite were 157 μg/ml and 265 μg/ml, respectively.
Furthermore, the leaf and fruit extracts also showed apoptotic effects at the same IC concentration
Moreover, both leaf and fruit extracts also caused the death of 40.2 and 2.67 percent respectively in the tested parasite.
However, in the comparison tests, researchers suggest, "the S. ebulus leaf extract has a more toxic effect on promastigotes and amastigotes than its fruit extract and maybe in the future that be used as a drug candidate".
Taken altogether, herbal Elder may be considered a remedy for the treatment of parasitic infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Food Broccoli Blocks the Onset of Colitis in Vivo
The colon also is known as the large bowel or large intestine, formed parts of the digestive system in our body.
The colon consists of four parts: descending colon, ascending colon, transverse colon, and sigmoid colon.
The main functions of the colon are to reabsorb fluids and process waste products from the body and prepare for its elimination.
Colitis is medical a condition characterized by the inflammation of the large intestine, including the colon, caecum, and rectum.
Depending on the causes, colitis can be classified into microscopic colitis, ischemic colitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticula, radiation colitis, diversion colitis, eosinophilic colitis, and Behcet's colitis, particularly in those associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as ulcerative colitis (UC).
Conventionally, colitis caused by infection is treated by antibiotics. However, treatment of non-infection colitis is focusing on symptoms relief, supportive care, and maintaining adequate hydration and pain control.
The most common tools used for the colitis diagnosis are X-rays of the colon, testing the stool for blood and pus, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy.
Types of colitis according to the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, are including
microscopic colitis, ischemic colitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticula, radiation colitis, diversion colitis, eosinophilic colitis, and Behcet's colitis.
Epidemiologically, people with untreated colitis may experience complications of
* Congenital abnormalities
Women who are pregnant with Ulcerative colitis are associated with significantly increased risk of some selected congenital abnormalities (limb deficiencies, obstructive urinary, and multiple congenital abnormalities) according to the birth outcomes in women with ulcerative colitis examined in a nationwide.
* Nutritional deficiency
Malnutrition, particularly protein-energy malnutrition and vitamin and micronutrient deficiencies, as well as dysregulation of the intestinal microbiota, are common features of IBD.
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.
With an aim to find natural food for the prevention and treatment of colonic diseases, researchers compared the efficacy of lightly cooked broccoli (CB) containing greatly diminished myrosinase activity, with raw broccoli (RB), in mitigating colitis in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-treated mice.
The study included male C57BL/6 mice that were fed for two weeks on a 10% RB, 10% CB or control diet, all based on the AIN-93M diet with a half (n = 9) of each group received drinking water, and the other half received 2.5% DSS in water for one week, starting from Day 7 of the diet.
According to the tested analysis,
* CB lessened the damage by DSS, evidenced by decreased disease activity index comparable to those of RB.
* CB attenuated colon length shrinkage and lowered the endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide) leakage into the blood.
* CB also inhibited the severe colon lesions as assessed by histopathology.
* CB also decreased the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines through broccoli anti-inflammatory action by inhibiting the IL-6 trans-signaling pathway.
In other words, CB protected the integrity of the colon cells against the onset of colitis.
Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered functional food for the prevention and treatment of colitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Non-soy Legume, a Natural and Potential Anti-hyperuricemic Activity
Hyperuricemia is a condition of an excess of uric acid in the blood caused by reduced renal function.
The most common causes of hyperuricemia are genetics, insulin resistance, hypertension, hypothyroidism, obesity, diet, medications such as diuretics, and consumption of excess alcoholic beverages.
Gout mostly affected one joint is an acute and recurrent condition of arthritis as a result of uric acid building up in the blood, inducing joint inflammation.
Gout is a condition of recurrently inflammatory arthritis characterized by a red, tender, hot, and swollen joint caused by overexpression of purine in the body.
Gout is caused by an excess of uric acid in the blood, or hyperuricemia. Uric acid is a by-product that is produced during the digestive process in the breaking down of chemical ingredients purines.
Purines are natural nitrogen-containing compounds found in the cell DNA and RNA, including adenine (6-aminopurine) and guanine (2-amino, 6-oxypurine), is made inside the cells of the body.
Exogenously, purines can come from foods containing purine.
Under normal conditions, uric acid is eliminated by the kidney through urination. However, a high uric acid level can occur when the kidneys don't eliminate uric acid efficiently. People with kidney deficiency are associated with high levels of uric acid if foods with high levels of purines are consumed in a large amount, including red meat, seafood, and mushroom.
Some researchers suggested that people who are obese, overweight with diabetes, long-term use of diuretics and excessive alcohol drinking are associated with the risk of high levels of uric acid in the blood.
Additionally, genetic mutation inherited from the parents such as Q141K polymorphism and CFTR ΔF508 certain medical conditions such as tumor lysis syndrome, hypothyroidism, and psoriasis is also some major risk factors to cause excessive levels of uric acid in the blood.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with overexpression of purine, scientists examined the association between the consumption of non-soy legumes and different subtypes of non-soy legumes and serum uric acid (SUA) or hyperuricemia in elderly individuals with overweight or obesity and metabolic syndrome.
The cross-sectional analysis was conducted in the framework of the PREDIMED-Plus study that included 6329 participants with information on non-soy legume consumption and hyperuricemia.
According to tested analysis,
* Participants located in the top tertile of total non-soy legumes [prevalence ratio (PR): 0.89; 95% CI 0.82-0.97; p trend = 0.01, compared to lentils (PR: 0.89; 95% CI 0.82-0.97; p trend = 0.01), dry beans (PR: 0.91; 95% C: 0.84-0.99; p trend = 0.03) and peas (PR: 0.89; 95% CI 0.82-0.97; p trend = 0.01)] presented a lower prevalence of hyperuricemia (vs. the bottom tertile).
* Once again, chickpea consumption was not associated with hyperuricemia prevalence.
Based on the results, researchers suggest, "despite being a purine-rich food, non-soy legumes were inversely associated with.... hyperuricemia prevalence".
Taken altogether, non-soy legumes may be considered functional foods for the treatment of diseases associated overexpression of hyperuricemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
