Coffee intake daily and regularly may have a potential impact in reduced risk of hepatic fibrosis during recovery of liver injured, a renowned institute study suggested.
Coffee, second to tea, is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
Hepatic fibrosis is profusely and abnormally recovery of wound healing, causing excessive connective tissues build up in the liver.
In a experiment model of induced Liver injury by 28-day of chronic bile duct ligation (BDL) in male Wistar rats with conventional coffee, decaffeinated coffee, or caffeine administered daily, researchers at the joint study reported the following results
1. In compared to conventional coffee, caffeine expressed a significant suppression of most of the changes produced by BDL, particularly in antifibrotic effects
2. All types of coffee displays an elevated antioxidant properties in restored redox equilibrium, thus preventing the elevation of liver enzymes and hepatic glycogen depletion
3. Caffeinated coffee and caffeine exhibited a reduced in increased collagen
In fact, the efficacy of coffee and caffeine in ameliorated risk of liver fibrosis may be attributed to phytochemical compounds in increased antioxidant status and decreased over expression of pro inflammatory cytokins as well as regulating protein in over production of collagen.
Other, in support of the above analysis, researchers in the study to evaluate the antifibrotic properties of coffee in in male Wistar rats with liver damage induced by repeated administration of thioacetamide (TAA). Oral administration of conventional caffeinated coffee or decaffeinated coffee (CC, DC, respectively) for 8 weeks reported the following results
1. Intake of coffee showed a significant effect in suppression of most of the damage produced by TAA in rat liver
2. Coffee reduced expression of on going experimental cirrhosis by blocking the elevation of the profibrogenic cytokine TGF-β and its downstream effector CTGF in induction of inflammation through increased antioxidant status, regardless to types of coffee and numbers of cup intake per day.
Dr. Arauz J, the lead researcher said, " Various components of coffee that have been related to such a favorable effec(in reduced risk of hepatic fibrosis) include caffeine, coffee oils kahweol, cafestol and antioxidant substances".
Interestingly, the Biophysics and Neuroscience cInfectomics and Molecular Pathogenesis study also reconfirmed that effect of coffee and coffee caffeine in attenuated risk of liver fibrosis were resulted from the following demonstrations
1. Caffeine prevents elevation of liver enzymes in reduced liver tissues damage and over expression of collagen in the rats treated with TAA plus.
2. Caffeine elevated antioxidant properties by restoring the redox equilibrium through reduced lipid peroxidation and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) levels
3. Reduced proinflammatory initiation.
Taking altogether, coffee and coffee caffeine regardless numbers of cup intake per day illustrated a significant effect in ameliorated risk and progression of hepatic fibrosis.
