Bile acids synthesized from by oxidation from cholesterol in the liver, flowing to the gallbladder to aid digestion.
Bile acids binding is a process to interfere with normal fat digestion and absorption including the prevention of absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K.
In other words, binding of bile acids (BAs) may have a strong effect to lower blood cholesterol levels by increasing the excretion of bile acids in the stool and reducing the amount of bile acid returning to the liver.
By inhibiting the levels of bile acid caused by a certain type of liver/bile duct disease such as partial biliary obstruction, levels of cholesterol can be controlled.
Conventionally, the effects of bile acid sequestrant are limited. Low doses of 8 gram/day of Cholestyramine, a bile acid sequestrant, which binds bile in the gastrointestinal tract to prevent its reabsorption can lower LDL cholesterol by 10%-15% comapred to high doses of 24 gram/day of only 25%.
In other words, bile acid-binding medicine such as Cholestyramine, used alone are less effective, comapred to statins in lowering LDL cholesterol.
Most common symptoms associated with the intake of Cholestyramine are constipation, diarrhea, stomach/abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.
Bile acid sequestrants such as lovastatin combined with niacin may be used to lower aggressively lower LDL cholesterol levels.
Dr. Gordon Schectman and colleagues in the study published at the American Journals of Cardiology wrote, " Niacin and lovastatin are effective drugs for hypercholesterolemia management in the Veterans Administration Medical Center setting. However, in elderly veterans, bile acid sequestrants were associated with a higher rate of adverse effects limiting compliance, and psyllium was ineffective".
Kale is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae, native to coastal southern and western Europe.
The Kale's leave is highly nutritious cultivated as foods in most part of Europe.
On finding a potent compound for the prevention and treatment of hypercholesterolemia, researchers examined the effects of kale bile acid-binding capacity.
The study included the testing of three different compositions of bile acids to establish the optimal dose for bile acid-binding.
Compared to other cruciferous vegetables such as red leaf lettuce, red cabbage, red kale, green kale, and Brussels sprouts, kale showed significantly higher bile acid-binding capacity at 1.5 g sample and remained constant up to 2.5 g.
In kale Comparision, minimally processed (microwaved 3 min or steamed 8 min) green kale showed significantly higher bile acid-binding capacity (91.1 ± 0.3 and 90.2 ± 0.7%, respectively) compared to lyophilized kale (85.5 ± 0.24%).
Furthermore, kale also prevented cholesterol reabsorption into the blood by binding to hydrophobic bile acids, chenodeoxycholic acid, and deoxycholic acid preferably.
These results suggested that kale processes the highest anti hypercholesterolemic activity by binding to bile acids compared to other veggies in the same family.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " regular consumption of kale, especially minimally processed kale, can help excrete more bile acids and, thus, may lower the risk of hypercholesterolemia".
Taken altogether, kale may be considered a functional food for the promotion of bile acid-binding, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Onion, the Anti-Hypertensive Remedy
Hypertension, a condition associated with the cluster of metabolic syndrome is a medical condition associated with abnormally high blood pressure.
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood and change constantly depending on activity. However, persistent hypertension due to poor management over time can lead to diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association., nearly half of all adults in the United States are living with high blood pressure or 1 in 3 American are hypertensive.
Hypertension is leading risk factors of heart disease and stroke that cause most death in the US
Most common prevalent factors associated with the condition onset are family history, aging, being male, being overweight or obese, ethnicity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and medical condition such as chronic kidney disease.
Believe or not, excessive alcohol drinking is also one of the major causes besides obesity in elevating the syndrome onset.
Depending on the levels of blood pressure, most people with mild hypertension are assymptomatic. However, unmanaged high blood pressure can induce complication of heart attack or stroke, heart failure, weakened and narrowed blood vessels, metabolic syndrome and trouble with memory or understanding,
In severe cases, chronic hypertension can lead to dementia.
Conventionally, blood pressure medications have been found to prevent many deaths from heart disease and stroke over the past 30 years, however, long-term intake of such medications have caused many side effects such as damaging the kidney.
Some researchers suggested by making changes to lifestyle, maintaining ideal weight and diet with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.
Dr. Myung Hwa Yang wrote, "a healthy eating, weight management, and appropriate physical activity are essential for the management of high blood pressure in adults since these lifestyle managements have the potential to improve blood pressure control and even reduce the need for medication.23)"
And "Our findings indicate that to achieve better rates of blood pressure control, the clinician should advise lifestyle modifications such as adequate physical activity and low salt intake, in addition to prescribing medication and monitoring the patient for hypertension control".
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.
On finding a potent ingredient which processes cardioprotection researchers examined the effects of onion on blood pressure in N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) induced-hypertensive rats and stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP).
The vivo study included male 6-weeks-old Sprague-Dawley rats induced-hypertensive to receive tap water containing L-NAME of a concentration of 50 mg/kg BW/day and dried onion at 5%.
Onion application showed significant anti-hypertensive activity on the L-NAME induced-hypertensive rats and the SHRSP by decreasing the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) associated with lipid peroxidation in blood plasma.
Furthermore, nitrate/nitrite (products of nitric oxide (NO)) involved in blood vessel relaxation excreted in urine and the NO synthase (NOS) associated with vascular tone activity in the kidneys in SHRSP were also increased by the onion injection.
Interestingly, the efficacy of onion that inhibits the onset of high blood pressure was not found similar to those in the L-NAME induced hypertensive rats such as increasing the levels of NOS.
More precisely, onion promoted hypotension in L-NAME treated rat without inhibiting of NOS activity by L-NAME, and decreased nitrate/nitrite excretion in urine may be associated with only the promotion of antioxidants activity
Dr. Sakai Y, the lead scientists said, "The mechanism of the antihypertensive effect of onion probably involves increased saving of NO by the antioxidative activity of onion in L-NAME induced-hypertensive rats".
Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry, the Natural Treatment for Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) with No Side Effects
Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a condition caused by the interruption of blood that returns to the heart from the legs due to the damage of venous wall and/or valves in the leg veins, leading to the collection of blood on the veins.
The pool of blood that collected into the veins is called stasis which can be observed over the surface of the affected area.
Researchers do not know the exact causes that prevent the valves to block the calf muscles and the muscles in the feet to squeeze the veins and push the blood upward. However, according to epidemiological studies, researchers do know that aging, occupation associated with extended sitting or standing or a combination of aging and reduced mobility are some of the most prevalent factors associated with chronic venous insufficiency.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition of a blood clot that formed in a vein deep in the leg has been found to develop CVI within 10 years after diagnosis in over 30% of patients.
The University of California in the examination of the risk factors associated with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) by classified them against the gender suggested age, family history of venous disease, waist circumference, and flat feet were most common predictive risks in both sexes.
However, men with occupation as a laborer, cigarette smoking, and normotension were also independently associated with severe venous disease.
In women, hours standing, history of a leg injury, number of births, and cardiovascular disease have also increased the risk of the condition.
Most common symptoms of CVI include swelling, pain, itchiness and twisted, enlarged veins observed on the skin on the affected location.
Untreated CVI may cause increased pressure and swelling that have been found to burst the capillaries, leading to skin reddish-brown, especially near the ankles.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
With an aim to discover a novel and natural ingredient for the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency with no side effects, researchers examined the effects of an oral venotropic compound (Linfavenix, including bilberry) on patients with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).
Patients selected to the study were divided into a group treated with Linfavenix or with below-knee elastic compression.
According to based results, the Linfavenix group included 14 patients 7 males and 7 females with the mean age of 44.5 exerted the average ambulatory venous pressure (AVP) range 34-55 compared to those in the elastic compression group with 12 patients (5 males and 7 females) with the mean age of 45 of the range of 36-56.
In other words, there were no significant differences in AVP and RT between the two groups in the improvement of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) at the treatment of 2 weeks.
However, at 4 weeks although there were nonsignificant between the two groups, RF in the Linfavenix group showed a significant decrease in chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) compared to the efficacy in a single ingredient treatment.
The findings suggested that the treatment with Linfavenix is effective for the treatment of CVI at least comparable to those of elastic compression but in a lesser extent compared to the combined treatment.
During the experiment, no adverse effects were reported by the participants. According to the compliance and tolerability scores, no patient had to stop treatment; there were no drop-outs.
Based on these results, researchers suggested, "the treatment with Linfavenix is, in its microcirculatory efficacy, at least comparable than elastic compression with is considered a standard therapeutic option in these patients".
Taken altogether, bilberry used combined with other ingredients may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric, the Natural Treatment for Metabolic Dysfunction with No Side Effects, Revealed by Scientists
Scientists may have found a kitchen spice which processes bioactive ingredients for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction with no side effects, according to studies.
Metabolism is a natural chemical process of organisms, including humans with an aim to sustain- life.
According to the purposes of the bioprocess, human metabolism can be classified into the process to convert food to energy by breaking down the carbohydrates, proteins, and fats to run cellular processes, and eliminate nitrogenous wastes.
Metabolic dysfunction is a condition caused by any interruption of the aforementioned processes.
In other words, metabolic dysfunction induces the production of excess or a reduced amount of substances needed to stay healthy.
A metabolic disorder can be caused by genetic proposition induced inborn errors of metabolism, or acquired by an individual in the lifetime
There are many risk factors associated with the onset of metabolic dysfunction depending on the types of disruption such as abnormal blood glucose metabolism induced type 2 diabetes.
Diseases associated with metabolic dysfunction can be moderate or severe depending on the organs involved, including liver or respiratory failure, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis), and HIV/AIDS.
Symptoms of metabolic dysfunction are varied among individuals depending totally to the types of disorder.
Some mild condition of metabolic dysfunction can be managed with an only lifestyle change, others may require the long-term intake of certain medication accompanied by a healthy diet and moderate exercise such as diabetes.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction, researchers examined the potential capacity of curcumin, contained in Curcuma longa extract (Biocurcuma™),in the attenuation of risperidone-induced metabolic dysfunction in an animal model.
The study involved 4 groups of mice were treated once a week, for 22 weeks with an intraperitoneal injection of risperidone (Risperdal) at a dose of 12.5 mpk.
One group of mice in the risperidone-treated group were fed a diet with 0.05% Biocurcuma™ (curcumin), one of the vehicle-treated group and two other groups received the standard diet.
Curcumin treatment group inhibited the risperidone effect in reducing spontaneous motricity (motor function) but failed to impede de risperidone-induced increase in food intake.
In other words, curcumin failed to reduced de risperidone-induced weight gain and steatosis.but decreased visceral adiposity stored within the abdominal cavity and decreased the risperidone-induced abnormal enlargement of the liver.
Furthermore, curcumin protected the liver enzymes associated with lipid and glucose metabolism against the overexpression in the induction of metabolic dysfunction by modulating the risperidone-induced glucose intolerance and hypertriglyceridemia.
Moreover, the curcumin treatment group also showed to reduce levels of markers of hepatotoxicity (ALAT, ASAT) and proinflammatory cytokines expression caused by risperidone (Risperdal).
Dr. Auger F, the lead scientist said, "These findings support that nutritional doses of curcumin contained in Curcuma longa extract are able to partially counteract the risperidone-induced metabolic dysfunction in mice".
The findings suggested that Curcuma longa extract inhibited metabolic dysfunction through a number of mechanisms involving adipocytes, pancreatic cells, hepatic stellate cells, macrophages, and muscle cells.
Taken altogether, turmeric and its bioactive compound curcumin may be considered functional remedies for the treatment of syndrome and diseases associated with metabolic dysfunction, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Whole Food Tomato Apoptoses Liver Cancer Better Than of Doxorubicin and Camptothecin in Vitro
Cancer is a class of diseases caused by cells growth disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.
Liver cancer is a chronic and medical condition associated with irregular cell growth in the liver tissues.
The liver is the largest internal organ that only filters out blood from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body, but also produces bile to aid digestion, build strong cell walls and vitamin D and steroid hormones.
The liver jointed with kidney and skin is considered 3 detoxed organs in the human.
Most common liver cancers are
* Hepatocellular carcinoma, is a most common liver cancer accounting, accounting for 75 percent of all cases caused by the DNA alternation of hepatocytes, predominant liver cells.
Epidemiologically, primarily hepatocellular carcinoma has been found to metastasize to the pancreas,...
* Cholangiocarcinoma, also known as bile duct cancer, is caused by abnormal cells growth in the small, tube-like bile ducts in the liver, accounting to 10 to 20% of all liver cancer cases.
Out of many prevalent factors that cause the onset of liver cancer, some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may have a strong impact to increase the risk of liver cancer.
Dr. Qiu-Ye Lan, the lead scientist wrote, "Healthy dietary patterns may prevent many chronic diseases and is emphasized by 2015 US dietary guideline, but it remains unclear which dietary patterns may be a benefit to prevention of primary liver cancer (PLC)"
And, "Our findings suggest that the UPDP (an urban prudent dietary pattern (UPDP)) and TCDP (traditional Cantonese dietary pattern (TCDP) )were associated with lower, whereas the MPFP with the higher, risk of PLC".
Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongings to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
In the urgency to discover healthy foods for the treatment of liver cancer, researchers examined the effect of the tomato antiproliferative activities against human colon (HT29) and liver (HepG2) cancer cells.
Application of the tetrasaccharide tomato glycoalkaloid alpha-tomatine, the trisaccharide beta(1)-tomatine, the disaccharide gamma-tomatine, the monosaccharide delta-tomatine, and their common aglycon tomatidine showed better inhibition of liver cancer cell compared to the tested colon cell line.
Additonally, alpha-tomatine isolated from tomato at a concentration of 1 microg/mL demonstrated a greater effect against liver carcinoma cells compared to those of anticancer drugs doxorubicin and camptothecin
Furthermore, alpha-tomatine also inhibited normal human liver HeLa (Chang) cells without inducing any side effects.
Also in vitro, according to the tested assays,
* Alpha-tomatine isolated from green tomatoes induced liver cancer cells death compared to little inhibition of the cells by the three low-tomatine red tomato extracts.
* Alpha-Tomatine from tomato also was highly effective in inhibiting all of the liver cell lines, compared to had little cell inhibition of ehydrotomatine, tomatidenol, and tomatidine.
Collectively, the results not only showed the susceptibility to destruction varies with the nature of the alkaloid and plant extract but also how phytochemicals in plant worked synergistically in cancer inhibition.
Dr. Friedman M, the lead scientist said, "These findings extend related observations on the anticarcinogenic potential of glycoalkaloids and suggest that consumers may benefit by eating not only high-lycopene red tomatoes but also green tomatoes containing glycoalkaloids".
Taken altogether, tomato processed a high amount of lycopene may be considered a dietary supplements for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending to large sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Maternal Coffee > 4 Cups/day or Coffee Caffeine > 2 Cups/day Intake in Increased Risk of Congenital Malformations
A renowned institute suggested that coffee consumption in high doses during pregnancy may have a directed influence in congenital malformations of the fetus.
Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
The congenital malformation is a birth defect with structural or functional abnormalities existed in the mother womb before the infant was born.
In 755 pairs of mothers of malformed children and their controls personally interviewed soon after delivery consisted of mothers of children with 112 defects of the central nervous system, 241 orofacial clefts, 210 structural defects of the skeleton, and 143 cardiovascular malformations, researchers suggested that although coffee consumption during pregnancy was similar for the mothers of malformed or non-malformed children, high coffee drinking at least four cups of coffee a day displayed a significantly increased relative risk of 1.3, in compared to with those not consuming coffee of 0.7.
Other, in the case-control study assessed associations between maternal dietary caffeine and congenital LDs using data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS), with 844 LD cases and 8069 controls from 1997 to 2007, researchers, after adjusting to other risk factors found that total caffeine intake daily has a moderated effect in increased risk of congenital limb deficiencies (LDs) in compared to the lowest intake, regardless to amount of caffeine intake.
Furthermore, in multi-center case-control study interviewed mothers of 776 SB cases and 8,756 controls about pregnancy events and exposures between 1988-2012, according to the returned questionnaire, caffeine intake during the first lunar month of pregnancy > 2 cups per day may have a directed effect in an increased risk of Spina bifida.
Spina bifida is a congenital defect of the spine induced paralysis of the lower limbs, and sometimes mental handicap.
Additionally, according to data extracted from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, a population-based case-control study in examine the associations between maternal self-reports of exposures and occurrence of choanal atresia in their offspring in 117 case and 8350 control mothers with deliveries from 1997 through 2007, researchers expressed that pre-pregnancy daily coffee intake of 3 or more cups displays a traumatic risk of offspring choanal atresia in compared to those who consumed less than 1 cup per day.
Choanal atresia is a congenital defect of the back of the nasal passage (choana) is blocked due to abnormal bony or soft tissue.
Taking all together, intake of coffee more than 4 cups/day or Coffee Caffeine > 2 Cups/day during pregnancy may be considered as risk factors in an increased risk of congenital malformations. Women with previous birth of congenital malformations, should reduce intake of coffee consumption to < or = 2 cups per day.

Herbal Turmeric Protects Your Vision Against Eye Diseases
Eye diseases are the condition characterized by the change of vision, including a gradual loss of cells in the retina and neurons associated with the loss of vision.
Most eye diseases at the early stage are asymptomatic and painless with no change in the vision until the disease has become quite advanced.
People have an eye problem at one time and another. Most eye conditions are minor and go away sometimes without even noticing.
Most common causes of eye diseases are inflammation as a result of microbial infection, including bacterial, viral, parasitic or fungal infection, eye structure damage due to physical impact, genetic preposition due to mutation of certain associated with the vision, medical conditions such as diabetes and allergens.
In elderly, eye diseases are caused by optic nerve damage and visual field loss, hormone change, aging induce loss of flexible of eye small blood vessels and eye muscles due to aging,.... including age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract.
According to statistics, approximately one person in three has some form of vision-reducing eye disease by the age of 65 in the US. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, cataract are the most prevalent eye disease found in the elderly.
With an aim to find a natural whole food or supplement for the treatment of eye disease, researchers examined curcumin, the major curcuminoid of the turmeric, used in many countries since ancient time for preventing and/or treating major anterior segment eye diseases.
In vitro and in vivo, curcumin showed beneficial effects on major anterior segment eye diseases, including the anti-angiogenesis effect in corneal diseases; anti-inflammation or anti-allergy effects in dry eye disease, conjunctivitis.
Injection of curcumin protected the eye against the attacks of free radicals and degradation in cataracts and neuroprotective effects in glaucoma.
In vitro, a novel nanocarrier formulation comprising Pluronic-F127 stabilized D-α-Tocopherol polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate nanoparticles, used to solubilize high concentrations (4.3 mg/mL) of curcumin exerted a significantly protect against cobalt chloride-induced hypoxia and glutamate-induced toxicity on the retinal cell line (R28).
In vivo, the novel nanocarrier formulation protects the eye against models of ocular hypertension (OHT) and partial optic nerve transection (pONT).
The findings strongly support the notion of curcumin and curcumin combined with other supplements extensively used in many countries since ancient time for preventing and/or treating a multitude of diseases including eye disease.
Also, the topical application of CN twice-daily for three weeks significantly reduced retinal ganglion cell loss compared to controls.
Dr, the lead scientist said, "Our novel topical CN formulation has potential as an effective neuroprotective therapy in glaucoma and other eye diseases with neuronal pathology".
Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered a supplement for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of eye disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

High Amount of Coffee Caffeine Intake Daily In Increased Risk of Headaches
Too much coffee caffeine may have a profound and negative effect on increased risk of a headache.
Coffee, second to green tea, is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
According to the Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht, in the diagnosis of three men aged 33, 35 and 26 years, respectively, and two women aged 67 and 44 years, respectively, as little as 100 mg caffeine, equivalence to 1 cup of coffee may be enough to cause a headache.
Dr. Schonewille WJ, insisted that increased intake of coffee caffeine were found associated to morning or weekend headaches and a decreased response to headache medication or chronic daily headache.
Other, in the investigated population-based cases and controls recruited from the Baltimore, MD, Philadelphia, PA, and Atlanta, GA, metropolitan areas, in compared the rate of headaches of controls (n = 507) reported 2 to 104 headache days/year, and cases (n = 206) reported > or =180 headache days/year, found that
1. High caffeine consumption was associated with onset of chronic daily headache (CDH), in comparison with episodic headache controls
2. Dietary and medicinal caffeine consumption was associated with a moderate risk factor for chronic daily headache onset, regardless of types of headache.
Some researchers suggested that with all the evidence, coffee consumption associated to caffeine content may have a negative effect in approximately one-quarter of the reported prevalence of headache and other conditions such as palpitations, tremor, and insomnia.
Taking altogether, there is no doubt that intake of high coffee caffeine daily and regularly may have an increased risk of early headaches onset and headaches frequency.

Bromelain, the Natural Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Rhinosinusitis (RS) With No Side Effects
Rhinosinusitis (RS) is a condition associated with the inflammation of the sinuses and nasal cavity.
Chronic Rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an inflammation of the sinuses and nasal cavity that last more than 12 weeks.
According to statistics, the prevalence of CRS in Korea, Europe, and the US is approximately 7%, 10%, and 12%, respectively.
The exact causes of CRS are not identified. However, some researches suggested that infection that does not heal itself due to the inability of the immune system to destroy all the infectious pathogens in the acute phase of infection may play a critical role to the onset of the condition.
Symptoms of CRS are totally depending on the state of severity. Some patients may experience symptoms of facial pressure or pain, post-nasal drainage, nasal blockage, anosmia or hyposmia, or fatigue.
Conventionally, medications used for the treatment of CRS are focusing on reducing symptoms and improved quality of life, inclduing prescribed antibiotics in case of bacterial infection.
If all medicines fail, surgery may be necessary.
Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of CRS, some researchers suggested that cigarette smoking may have a strong and negative impact on the syndrome.
Dr. Douglas D. Reh, the lead scientist wrote, " Environmental factors such as inhaled pollutants like cigarette smoke may play a significant role in diseases of the upper airway including chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS)".
And, "There is clear evidence in the literature that cigarette smoke, either through active smoking or passive exposure to SHS, contributes to CRS".
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to discover a potential ingredient for the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis, researchers investigated the penetration of bromelain into sinonasal mucosa in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), compared to the control group.
40 participants with CRS were divided into 2 groups equally either treated by bromelain derived from pineapple (Ananas comosus) or control.
Bromelain 500 mg tablet twice daily administered for 30 days in the treatment group displayed a significant effect in reduced inflammation in patients with CRS compared to control.
In other words, bromelain has an excellent distribution from blood to rhinosinusal mucosa in exhibition anti-inflammatory activity.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Its (bromelain) diffusion ability may allow the use of bromelain as an anti-inflammatory agent in paranasal sinus pathologies".
In a pilot study, researchers evaluated the efficacy, tolerability, and impact on the quality of life (QoL) of bromelain tablets (500 FIP) in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS).
According to the results from 12 patients suffering from CRS with (CRS+NP) or without (CRS-NP) nasal polyps who had undergone prior sinus surgery, treatment with bromelain tablets (500 FIP) for 3 months, exerted a strong effect in symptom scores (Total Symptom Scores: TSS); a Total Rhinoscopy Score (TRS) and the Sinonasal Outcome Test 20 (SNOT-20 GAV) with no side effects.
Dr. Büttner L, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "Preliminary results indicate good tolerability, symptom control, and improvement in QoL for the treatment of CRS using bromelain tablets (500 FIP)".
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Coffee and Coffee Caffeine in Increased Insomniac Occurrence
Coffee consumption may have a negative effect on the induced insomniac occurrence, a renowned institute study suggested.
.
Insomnia is a condition characterized by unable to sleep regularly and normally
Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
In a total of 7698 subjects aged 11-17 years included in the investigation of a cross-sectional study within the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents. Self-report questionnaires returned by participants showed that
1. Frequent coffee consumption, accompanied by high alcohol intake and frequent smoking may be associated with the prediction of IC in male subjects
2. Frequent coffee consumption and high alcohol intake also induced the predicted occurrence of insomnia IC in females.
After taking into account of other factors, researchers emphasized that coffee consumption may be an important risk factor for IC in adolescents and had a significantly affects in the association of smoking, alcohol, and marijuana with IC.
Additionally, in the study conducted by the Instituto Politécnico de Viseu included 6,919 students from the 7th to the 12th grade from 26 secondary schools, during 2012 with data collected, using a self-administered questionnaire, researchers filed the following results
1. The prevalence of symptoms of insomnia was 21.4 %, and the prevalence of insomnia was 8.3 %
2. After adjustment for gender and age, insomnia effects mostly in the female gender
3. Coffee and alcohol consumption showed a significant risk of insomnia with an adjusted relative risk of 1.63
According to the finding information, Dr. Amaral MO, the lead author said, " The main risk factors for insomnia among these adolescents are gender (female), age (≥ 16 years), depression, and coffee and alcohol consumption, which is also in concordance with those in the literature".
Furthermore, in rats, radiotelemetry transmitters with electroencephalogram and electromyogram electrodes implanted for sleep recording in animals administered with caffeine alone (10 mg/kg) or in combination with zolpidem (10 mg/kg) or trazodone (20 mg/kg), or vehicle, in crossover experiments with 12 healthy male volunteers in a randomised, placebo-controlled, 4-week crossover study, caffeine injection group showed a significant prolongation in objective sleep onset latency (SOL) with disruption in subjective measures of sleep onset caused by caffeine in rats and humans in compared to other groups.
Taking together, coffee and coffee caffeine may have a disruptive effect in induced insomnia and symptoms of insomnia, particularly in female, therefore women who have a history of insomnia should reduce intake of coffee or only drink them in the morning at a reduced amount.

Cranberry, the Anti Urinary Tract Infection Healthy Food
Infection is an inflammatory condition caused by a microbial invasion on body tissues
Most cases of bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. However, bacteria are very adaptable, overuse of antibiotics has been found to make them resistant to antibiotics.
Most common symptoms of bacterial infection include redness and heat, swelling, fever, pain at the site of infection.
Urinary tract infection (UTIs) mostly occurred in women is an infection that affects the bladder and urethra caused mostly by bacterial strains Escherichia coli (E. coli), commonly found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
UTIs has been found to limit the function of the bladder and induce kidney infection.
Most common symptoms of urinary infection are a persistent urge to urinate, urinary burning sensation, cloudy urine, and smelly urine.
In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of blood in the urine and bladder and pelvic pain.
Most common risk factors of urinary tract infection are gender, females are more like to have UTI comapred to males, sexual activity, use of birth control, and menopausal women.
Some researchers suggested that sexual intercourse may increase the risk of symptomatic urinary tract infection in postmenopausal women.
Dr. Elya E. Moore, the lead scientist in the joint study lead by the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine wrote, ".., as with younger women, sexual intercourse is strongly associated with UTI in post-menopausal women, supporting a common mechanism for infection among women of widely varying ages".
And, " This finding emphasizes the clinical importance of inquiring about recent sexual intercourse when treating post-menopausal women for symptomatic urinary tract infections".
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of urinary infection, researchers examined the effect of cranberry anti urinary tract infections (UTIs) activity.
Based on the analysis, cranberry consumption showed a significant effect on decreasing UTI related symptoms by suppressing inflammatory associated with the immunologic response to pathogenic invasion by eradicating the bacteria.
Furthermore, injection of cranberry against UTIs was also found to prevent the development of infections only in populations at lower risk for contracting UTIs compared to low effective in a higher risk population.
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of UTIs, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Curcumin, the Single Bioactive Compound Which Processes Cardioprotective Property Against Heart Disease, Scientists Say
Scientists may have found a kitchen bioactive compound which processes cardio-protective properties, according to studies.
Cardioprotection is an action that contributes to the protection of heart integrity against damage or injury.
In other words, cardioprotection is a process in which substances or medicines are used including an herbal remedy to protect heart muscle tissues against ischemic insult and deoxygenation injury.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a class of conditions associated with the dysfunction of the arteries and heart.
Coronary artery disease caused by narrowing of the arteries, heart attack, abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias and stroke are the most common types of cardiovascular diseases found in the Western world.
Most common symptoms of CVD include persistent fatigue, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, and fainting.
If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the CVD possibility.
The exact causes of cardiovascular diseases are unidentified. However, according to epidemiological studies, the most prevalent factors include aging, smoking. lack of exercise. unhealthy diet. obesity. high blood pressure and cholesterol, and family history.
Out of many risk factors, an unhealthy lifestyle is one of the major risk factors that cause the onset of CVD, some researchers suggested.
Dr. Haskell WL in the investigation of cardiovascular disease prevention and lifestyle interventions
said, "While heredity can be a major factor for some people, their personal health habits and environmental/cultural exposure are more important factors".
And, "Not smoking, being physically active, eating a heart-healthy diet, staying reasonably lean, and avoiding major stress and depression are the major components of an effective CVD prevention program. For people at high risk of CVD, medications frequently need to be added to a healthy lifestyle to minimize their risk of a heart attack or stroke, particularly in persons with conditions such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, or hyperglycemia. Maintaining an effective CVD prevention program in technologically advanced societies cannot be achieved by many high-risk persons without effective and sustained support from a well-organized health care system".
The results strongly suggested by lifestyle change has a strong implication in the prevention of the CVD.
With an aim to find a potent compound which processes cardioprotective effects, researchers investigated the cardioprotective effect of curcumin in NE-induced cardiac apoptosis according to the tested assays, curcumin protected the cardiomyocytes against apoptosis significantly.
Furthermore, injection of curcumin also reverted to cardiomyocytes damage back to the normal physiological state.
In other words, curcumin protected the integrity of heart muscle cells against Norepinephrine (NE) in the induction of the onset of cardiomyopathy and heart failure.
Dr. Manghani C, the lead scientist said, "curcumin has the potential to act as a therapeutic agent for the attenuation of NE-induced cardiac cell death and modulation of apoptosis in H9c2 cardiomyocytes".
Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered a cardioprotective supplement for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Maternal Coffee Intake > 4 Cups/Day in Risk of Miscarriage?
Risk of miscarrying is increased substantially in excessive coffee drinkers during pregnancy, an Asian study suggested
Coffee, one of the most popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
Miscarriage is the expulsion of a fetus from the womb between the 12th and 28th weeks of gestation.
In a case-controlled study conducted in Milan of 561 (72%) cases of spontaneous abortion and 877 (57%) controls, coffee drinking during the first trimester of the index pregnancy with healthy women who gave birth at term (> 37 weeks gestation) to healthy infants as control, researchers reported that the risk of miscarrying is classified as follow
1. Coffee intake of 1, 2 or 3, and 4 or more cups of coffee per day are associated with increased risk of 1.2, 1.8 and 4.0, respectively in compared to non-drinkers.
2. The risk of pregnancy loss also is associated with the duration in years of coffee drinking. The estimated multivariate odds ratios of spontaneous abortion were 1.1 in comparison to non-coffee intake group.
Further more, in the evaluated effect of caffeine in influence of miscarriage researchers at the Boston University School of Public Health, conducted a prospective cohort study included 5132 Danish women planning pregnancy, enrolled from 2007 to 2010, after carefully assessed the returned beverage consumption on questionnaires, researcher found that a significantly miscarried risk is 1.62 higher in women consumed more that 300 mg/day of caffeine per day, in compared to 1.09 in women who consume <100 mg/day. Specifically, women with a daily intake of the caffeine of
1. <100 mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 1.09
2. 100-199mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 0,89
3. 200-299mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 1.33
Other, in prospective cohort study included 15,590 pregnancies from 11,072 women with no history of SAB in the Nurses' Health Study II (1991-2009) with beverage intake assessed every 4 years using a validated questionnaire in case pregnancies lost spontaneously at <20 weeks gestation, total coffee intake had a positive, linear association with SAB.
In compared to non-pre-pregnancy coffee intake, risk of SAB increased by 20% for women consuming ≥4 servings/day.
More importantly, Dr. Gaskins AJ, the lead author said, "Pre-pregnancy coffee consumption at levels ≥4 servings/day is associated with increased risk of SAB, particularly at weeks 8-19".
Taking together, there is no doubt that coffee may contribute to a relative risk of miscarrying for women consuming more than 4 cups per day. Women who are pregnant between 12 to 28 weeks of gestation with excessive coffee intake habit are recommended to consult with their doctors.

Phytochemical Lycopene Inhibits the Risk of Coronary Artery Disease in Men
Coronary artery disease (CAD)is a medical condition caused by the damage of major blood vessels that supply the heart with blood, oxygen, and nutrients (coronary).
The acute coronary syndrome is a medical emergency caused by suddenly reduced blood flow to the heart, leading to heart muscle damage and brain apoptosis, depending on the affected location.
An acute coronary syndrome is associated with the severity of buildup of plaque deposits on the walls of the coronary arteries.
Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood.
Arteries formed a part of blood vessels and circulatory system with function to deliver oxygen and nutrients to heart muscles.
Most cases of coronary artery disease onset are associated with inflammation of cholesterol-containing plaques in the arteries.
According to the statistics, approximately 1 of every 13 Americans aged 18 years and older are living with coronary artery disease. CAD is a leading cause of death in the ethnic group in the US, particularly in Hispanic American.
Believe it or not, CAD is predicted by scientists to become the most common cause of death worldwide by 2020.
Although CAD is a lowly progressive disease, the disease may become clinically apparent by age 40. People 65 years of age and older have been found in most patients with CAD.
Depending on the severity of the blockage, a complete blockage is life-threatening. Symptoms of coronary artery disease, chest pain or discomfort, pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the jaw, neck, back or stomach, shortness of breath, dizziness, and nausea.
If the chest pain is persistent with no sign of stopping, please call 911 immediately.
Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,
Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), researchers examined the role of lycopene on acute coronary events and stroke in the prospective Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease Risk Factor (KIHD) Study that included 725 middle-aged men free of coronary heart disease and stroke.
According to the tested analysis, men with the lowest quartile of serum levels of lycopene had a 3.3-fold (P < 0.001) risk of the acute coronary event or stroke as compared with others.
Also in men, low plasma levels of lycopene were associated with an 18% increase of intima-media thickness (IMT) associated with plaque accumulation compared to men with higher plasma levels of lycopene.
However, In women, there was no significantly different after the adjustments.
The results strongly suggested that the circulating levels of lycopene have a strong effect on the risk of cardiovascular disease in Finland, at least in men.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "circulating levels of lycopene, a biomarker of tomato-rich food, may play a role in early stages of atherogenesis and may have clinical and public health relevance".
Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Betaxanthins, the Potential Anti Cancer Phytochemical
Cancer is a class of chronic diseases caused by cells growth and multiplies disorderedly and uncontrollably in the body.
Every day millions of cell grow to replace millions of dead cells to keep our body in balance and healthy. Sometimes, acceleration of cells growth is necessary to prevent further damage to the body organ, such as cut, injure, etc., but after fulfilling their purposes, the growth of cells are back to a normal rate again.
Under normal circumstance, cell growth is limit to a number of cycles before dying and replacing by new cells. However, in cancer, the invasive cell can grow indefinitely. In other words, the cancer cell ignores the cell growth inhibitor.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, 1,762,450 new cancer cases will be diagnosed in the US. The disease will also cause the death of 606,880 Americans in the same year.
Believe it or not, the study continued, "Over the past decade of data, the cancer incidence rate (2006-2015) was stable in women and declined by approximately 2% per year in men, whereas the cancer death rate (2007-2016) declined annually by 1.4% and 1.8%, respectively".
Depending on the types and grade of cancer, some cancers can be progressively worse and damage other healthy tissues. Sometimes cancers can spread to other tissues and organs in the body via lymph or blood.
The most common prevalent factors that induce cancer risk are
* Aging is a prevalent risk factor of cancer developing as most patients with cancer are found in older adults. Some researchers suspected that free radicals may be one of the contributors.
* Tobacco use is asscoaited with an increased risk of lung cancer, due to chemicals induced cells alternation
* Sunlight is the major cause of skin cancer,
*ionizing radiation: Any types of hazard chemicals cause of gene mutation
* Virus and bacteria infection
* Hormones: Abnormal production of certain hormones can increase the risk of sex-related cancers
* Family history.
Carcinoma cancer is a most common type of malignant tumor found in anywhere of epithelial tissues lining the cavities, surfaces of structures and glands, accounting to 90% of all cancer cases.
Betaxanthins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, Sicilian prickly pear, etc.
With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of inflammatory disease, researchers examined the anti-inflammatory effects of red beetroot betaxanthins.
Vitexin-2-O-xyloside found in beetroot, in combination with betaxanthins and betacyanins, exerted antiproliferative activity in breast, liver, colon, and bladder cancer cell lines.
This efficacy was attributed to the synergistic activity in the inhibition of genes associated with pro-survivals, angiogenesis, and promotion of apoptosis.
Hypoxia-inducible factor 1A that responses to the decreases in available oxygen in the cancer cellular environment were also inhibited by the combination.
These results strongly suggested that these phytochemicals enhance their anticancer activity through The multi-target action.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Vitexin-2-O-xyloside, betaxanthins, and betacyanins can be used in combination with conventional anticancer drugs to reduce their toxicity and overcome the multidrug resistance of cancer cells".
Taken altogether, betaxanthins combined with other phytochemicals may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Excessive Coffee and Coffee Caffeine Intake In Risk Of Pregnancy Loss?
Bad news for pregnant women and coffee lovers, maternal caffeine intake may associate to increased risk of pregnancy loss, a renowned institute study suggested
Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
Pregnancy loss is a natural death of an embryo or fetus before it is born, including spontaneous abortion, miscarry, stillbirth...
According to the joint study led by the National University of Singapore and National University Health System, additional intake of 1 cup of coffee in women who are regular coffee drinkers similar to 100 mg/d increment caffeine intake was associated with 7% higher risk of pregnancy loss.
In a total of 130 456 participants and 3429 cases in fourteen included studies, researchers found that women with
1. No or very low caffeine intake, have a relative risk of pregnancy loss of 1.02
2. Moderate intake (150-349 mg/d) showed an increased relative risk of 1·16
3. High intake (350-699 mg/d) showed a relative risk of 1·40
4. Very high intake (≥ 700 mg/d) showed a relative risk of 1·72
The risks of pregnancy loss were increased linearly and correlatively to amounts of cup of coffee intake per day.
Furthermore, a case-control and cohort review study reported in English, the exposure of caffeine/coffee consumption during pregnancy, from selected 26 studies included (20 of caffeine and eight of coffee) suggested that the relative risk ratio of pregnancy loss due to caffeine consumption was 1.32
The study also found that risk of pregnancy loss increased substantially to 19% for every increased caffeine intake of 150 mg/day and every additional 2 cups of coffee intake, risk of pregnancy loss increased by 8%.
Although, there are many implications associated with pregnancy loss such as ages of woman and man, greater body mass index,..... excessive coffee drinking may be one of the avoidable risk factors.
Taking all together, there is no doubt that higher intake of coffee during pregnancy-induced high risk of pregnancy loss but according to the statistic, North American women seldom drink more than 4 cups/day, so we may be in the safe zones.

Whole Food Cucumber Protects the Gut Microbiome Composition Integrity
Gut microbiome made up of the trillions of microorganisms is the bacterial composition found in the gut of the digestive tract.
In a healthy individual, the ratio of the bacterial composition is balanced. In other words, the bad bacteria in the digestive tract is totally countered by the presence of the good bacterias.
However, the imbalanced ratio of the composition of the gut microbiota has been associated with chronic diseases ranging from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), obesity, and allergic disorders, in both human and animal models
Believe it or not, gut microbes have been found to influence many aspects of human health including immune, metabolic, and neurobehavioural traits.
In immunity, balanced of the gut microbes showed to stimulate the immune function against inflammatory immune disorders.
Digestively, balanced gut microbes protect the gut against gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases.caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.
In metabolism, gut microbes influence what the human host is able to extract from its diet, such as nutrients, thus reducing the risk of obesity and obese complication.
Neurologically, gut microbiota can control brain insulin signaling and metabolite levels that play a critical role in neurobehaviors.
Some researchers suggested, there are huge benefits that influence the function of the brain, immunity, heart, and the digestive system and reduce the risk of chronic diseases and conditions such as diabetes and metabolic syndrome by maintaining the good ratio of the gut microbiome.
The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.
With an aim to discover a natural ingredient for balancing the ratio of microbiota composition, researchers investigated evaluated cucumber phytochemical compositions along with their potential gut microbiota modulating, free radical scavenging, and anti-inflammatory capacities.
Seed flour extracts from cucumber enhanced total number of gut bacteria by altering the abundance of specific bacterial phylum or genus in vitro.
In other words, cucumbers improved the digestive functioning by enhancing the ratio of microbiota compositions in the gut.
Compared to broccoli and carrot seed flour extracts, cucumber seed extract showed the least effect in DPPH radical scavenging capacity, oxygen radical absorbing capacity, and hydrdoxyl radical (HO•) scavenging capacity values of 85, 634, and 270 μmol Trolox equivalent (TE)/g.
In the tested J774A.1 cells, cucumber suppressed the LPS induced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
The results strongly suggested that the administration of Cucumis prevented colonic inflammation and improved the digestive functioning by changing the gut microbiota composition.
In order to reveal more information of cumber in the improvement of gut microbiota, composition researchers examined Cucumis melo L. (Cucumis) on obesity-induced IR in genetically leptin-deficient Lepob/Lepob mice.
According to the tested assays, Cucumis improved IR and relieved inflammation in adipose tissue and blood that lead to the balance of the ratio of microbiota composition.
Dr. Lee D, the lead scientist after taking into account of co and confounders wrote, "administration of Cucumis improved IR by reducing inflammation, thereby changing the gut microbiota composition".
Taken altogether, fermented cucumber may be used for the treatment of digestive dysfunction by improving the ratio of gut microbiota composition, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
