All About Vitamins: Niacin in Prevention of Complication of Pellagra in Anorexia Nervosa

Niacin may be used as therapeutic form of treatment in patients of Anorexia Nervosa with complication of pellagra, a renowned institute insisted.

Anorexia nervosa is a type of eating disorder usually develop in the teen years and effect over 90% of female, because of excessive food restriction and irrational fear to become fat due the wrongly influenced media as attractiveness is equated to thinness.
Pellagra is a nutritional deficiency disease of tryptophan and niacin (nicotinic acid)

Niacin, is also known as vitamin B3, nicotinic acid, an organic compound with the formula
C6H5NO2, found abundantly in chicken, beef, fish, cereal, peanuts and legumes. It is best known for its effects in lowering cholesterol and triglycerides and removing toxic from our body and promoting production of steroid hormones.

According to the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, the reviewed literature revealed several cases of pellagra in patients with anorexia nervosa whose cutaneous symptoms resolve, such as erythema on sun-exposed areas, glossitis, and stomatitis. were resolved within 24-48 hours after oral niacin administration of 150-500 mg.

Furthermore, there are other cases of a 14-year-old girl and 20-year-old woman with disorders of anorexia nervosa symptoms of pellagra were treated successfully with niacin therapy and dietary treatment.

Dr. Jagielska G, the lead author in the study conducted by the Medical University of Warszaw, said, " Pellagra is a potentially fatal, nutritional disease with cutaneous, gastrointestinal, and neuropsychiatric manifestations. Because of the diversity of pellagra's signs and symptoms, diagnosis is difficult without an appropriate index of suspicion".

The finding evidences suggested restriction diets in patients diagnosed with anorexia nervosa may cause significant nutritional deficiency, inducing Pellagra, although it is not common.
