All About Vitamins: Niacin, A supplement for Improved immune responses

Niacin, is also known as vitamin B3, nicotinic acid, an organic compound with the formula
C6H5NO2, found abundantly in chicken, beef, fish, cereal, peanuts and legumes. It is best known for its effects in lowering cholesterol and triglycerides and removing toxic from our body and promoting production of steroid hormones.

Immune responses is a natural reaction of immune system against foreign invasion such as bacteria, viruses, and substances.

Niacin may have a profound effect in exhibited immune response against various type of invasive and inflammatory diseases, a Brazilian study opinionated.

According to the Institute of Biological Sciences, UFMG, in BALB/c mice, injection of nicotinic acid showed a significant activities in reduced production of inflammatory cytolions and stimulated the performance of chemoattractant in response to carrageenan against over expression of neutrophil.

Dr. Ferreira RG, the lead author said, "nicotinic acid plays an important role in the regulation of inflammation due to its ability to inhibit the actions of the neutrophil chemoattractants IL-8 and LTB4(inflammatory mediators)".

Truly, the study also insisted that niacin treatment in exhibited the chemoattractants may attenuate the impairment of white blood cells rolling and adherence to vascular endothelium in the microcirculation of inflamed tissues.

Other, in support of the above evaluation of neutrophil recruitment in IL-8-, LTB(4)- or carrageenan-induced pleurisy in mice, niacin treatment niacin improved immune response through reduced expression of inflammatory cytokins in inflammatory reaction of immune functioning.

The study also suggested that the efficacy of niacin in induced immune responses against action of proteins in regulated  pro and con inflammation.

The findings indicated that niacin may have a direct effect in improve immune response again foreign invasion in inducing infections and inflammation through expression in leukocyte migration from blood vessels into tissues.
