All About Vitamins: Niacin in Reduced Complications and Treatment of Gestational Diabetes

Niacin, is also known as vitamin B3, nicotinic acid, an organic compound with the formula
C6H5NO2, found abundantly in chicken, beef, fish, cereal, peanuts and legumes. It is best known for its effects in lowering cholesterol and triglycerides and removing toxic from our body and promoting production of steroid hormones.

Niacin and its derivative may have a profound effect in reduced risk of complications caused by gestational diabetes mellitus, a university study suggested.

Gestational diabetes mellitus, is a type of  glucose intolerance occurred only in the first recognition of pregnancy. The condition will resolve itself after giving birth.

Unfortunately, women with gestational diabetes is susceptible to increased risk of  early onset of diabetes.

According to the study conducted by the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), oral administration of nicotinamide supplementation exhibited anti gestational diabetes mellitus, effect in lower elevated glucose and reduced insulin through all aspects of diabetic parameters.

In animal study, nicotinamide in doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg applied to gestational diabetic fed to rats from days 6 through 20 of gestation showed a significant in reduced diabetes symptoms through increased production of antioxidants, reduced inflammatory cytokins and genes in controlling expression of free radicals.

The doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg t showed an extensive effect against the oxidative burst activity of neutrophils in response to cell differentiation of phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) and N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (FMLP) in elevated risk of diabestes complications as well as activating T helper (CD4+CD25+) cells and inducing proliferation of splenocytes, a type of white blood cell involved autoimmune diabetes mellitus expression.

The findings propsoed that nicotinamide as supplement may be used as therapeutic agent in support  existing treatment for gestational diabetes and pregnant individuals with weakened immune systems.
