Hypertension is a condition of abnormally high blood pressure in the bloodstream. Hypertension a member of the cluster conditions of metabolic syndrome associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.
According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, approximately, 103 million U.S. adults have high blood pressure, or 1 in 2 adults in the US have the syndrome.
The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located just below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine.
The kidneys formed a second detoxed organ in the body after the liver not only plays an essential role in regulating electrolytes, blood pressure, maintains acid-base balance, produces hormone calcitriol, renin, and erythropoietin,... but also filters blood that passes into the tubules. In the Urinary system, kidneys reabsorbed some necessary substances back into the blood, while waste, such as urea and ammonium are deposited into pelvis then into the ureter to the bladder for secretion.
Kidney disease is a condition that reduces the function of the kidney acutely or gradually.
Kidney damage is a condition that causes the reduced function of the kidney. Over time untreated kidney damage can induce the formation of scars. Over-expression of kidney scars can lead to kidney disease and kidney failure in severe cases.
According to the statistics, approximately 14 percent of the US population suffer some forms of chronic kidney disease (CKD), including 661,000 cases of kidney failure.
Believe it or not, almost half of the individuals with CKD also have diabetes and/or self-reported cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Blood in urine, protein in the urine, kidney stones, kidney infection, kidney pain, hepatitis C and other forms of kidney diseases are signs of kidney disease that can lead CKD.
With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention of stroke, researchers examined the effect of Brussels sprouts on high-sodium/low-potassium-fed stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive animal model.
Stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHRSP) received the Japanese diet for 4 weeks included in the study was divided into
* Nontreatment group.
* SHRSP group received a Japanese diet and B. oleracea.
* A third group received a Japanese diet, B. oleracea, and PPARα inhibitor (GW6471).
* A group of SHRSP fed with regular diet served as control.
According to the tested analysis, compared to a regular diet, group treated with Japanese diet (high-sodium/low-potassium) showed to induce the increases of oxidative stress, inflammation, and proteinuria, along with with glomerular and tubular damage.
The (AMPK/UCP2) pathway associated with the inhibition of ROS production and inhibits palmitate-induced apoptosis in endothelial cells was significantly suppressed by the Japanese diet.
However, Japanese diet-induced overexpression of oxidative stress accumulation, inflammation, renal damage, and proteinuria was totally prevented by the administration of Brussels sprouts.
Additionally, injection of Brussels sprouts also promoted the expression of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host observed by the increased level of a gene associated with drug toxicity without affecting the systolic blood pressure (SBP).
Taken altogether, Brussels sprouts may be considered supplements for the prevention of renal damage progression in hypertension, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
