Osteoporosis is a condition associated with low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue.
The disease is most common in older adults as the result of the bone made by the body can not cover the bone loss due to an increased serum of osteoclast mediator involved in bone resorption.
Consequently, the bone in osteoporotic patients become weak and breaking easily from a fall.
Believe it or not, in serious cases, bone can also be broken due to sneezings or minor bumps.
According to the statistics provided by the International Osteoporosis Foundation, approximately 44 million U.S. women and men aged 50 and older suffer from osteoporosis and low bone mass.
There are over 200 million women worldwide affected by osteoporosis, including one-tenth of women aged 60, one-fifth of women aged 70, two-fifths of women aged 80 and two-thirds of women aged 90.
Mature bone is composed of proteins and 60% of the weight of the bone is mineral, minerals. Approximately 60% of the weight of the bone is mineral, mainly calcium and phosphate. ... and 90% of collagen/
The function of bone collagen only provides strength and structure but holds the bone together to make the bone stronger.
Dr. Daniel König, the lead scientist in examing bone collagen formation in the risk of osteoporosis, wrote, " the intake of SCP increased BMD in postmenopausal women with a primary, age-related reduction of BMD. In addition, SCP supplementation was associated with a favorable shift in bone markers, indicating increased bone formation and reduced bone degradation".
In other words, the intake of specific collagen supplements may increase collagen's bioavailability and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.
On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of osteoporosis, researchers examined the effect of Tocotrienol-Rich Fraction (TRF), the δ-T3 rich oil extracted from Annatto on bone collagen formation.
According to the analysis, the δ-T3 rich oil extracted from Annatto was the most effective and significantly increased LOX expression which is required for the formation of bone collagen cross-links.
Furthermore, TRF treatment decreased the expression of de-novomethyltransferases (DNMTs), DNMT3A and DNMT3B in the induction of bone loss.
Moreover, TRF significantly inhibited JAK2 activation and decreased expression of Fli1, a transcription factor of DNMTs in the induction of impaired osteoclastogenesis against the promotion of osteoblast differentiation in the formation of bone.
Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement or improvement of bone collagen formation against the risk of osteoporosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica sinensis, the Potential Anti-Oxidative Stress Remedy
The expression of oxidative stress is a medical condition characterized by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host tissue.
In some cases, this reaction also is caused long-term accumulation of toxic substances in the body, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic.
There is no single cause of oxidative stress. Some researchers suggested that a number of factors can facilitate the onset of oxidative stress, including cigarette smoke, oxidative burst from activated macrophages, particularly, the free radicals chain reaction.
Sadly, a prolonged period of oxidative stress presented in the human body can cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, (lipids, proteins, DNA) and the death of healthy cells through cytotoxicity including atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, and stroke.
Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition is associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.
Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.
In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid and cell damage.
Apoptosis refers to the death of cells which occurs as a normal and controlled part of an organism's growth or development associated with the limited cycle division.
Anti-apoptotic activity found in the cancer is associated with the proliferation and unlimited cell cycle division for the growth of cancer.
Chemo drugs used for the treatment of cancer can also cause cancer cell death through inducing toxicity. However, the treatment also leads to the death of healthy cells and weakened immune functioning.
Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.
The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.
On finding a natural compound for the treatment of malignant tumors, the researchers examined the effects of Angelica Sinensis' polysaccharide (ASP) anti-apoptotic activity.
Based on the experimental differentiation, IN H9c2 cell, treated with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), A. Sinensis exerted protective effects against oxidative injury through its various active ingredients on the regulation of multiple pathways associated with pro-inflammatory cytokines induced by oxidative stress.
Furthermore, ASP pretreatment significantly decreased H2O2-induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis in H9c2 cells.
Moreover, H2O2-induced oxidative stress observed by the expression of oxidative stress and ER stress markers such as malondialdehyde production and lactic dehydrogenase release was also inhibited by the antioxidant activity of ASP.
Collectively, researchers said, " Conclusions Our findings indicate that ASP, a major water-soluble component of A. Sinensis, exerts protective effects against H2O2-induced injury in H9c2 cells by activating the ATF6 pathway, thus ameliorating ER and oxidative stress".
Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica may be considered a remedy that protects the cell against oxidative stress, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Beta-Sitosterol May Alleviates the Progression of Fatty Liver
The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.
The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.
Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.
A fatty liver is a liver condition associated with the accumulation of excess fat in the liver.
There are two main types of fatty liver disease:
* Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is a medical condition characterized by fat accumulated in the liver tissue other than excessive consumption of alcohol.
According to the American liver foundation, Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease is one of the most common causes of liver disease and approximately 30% (100 million) individuals in the United States are estimated to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
The causes of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease are unknown. Also, as of today researchers do not understand why some people are susceptible to liver fat accumulation while others are not.
The disease can be classified into the types of non-inflammatory fatty liver (NAFL) and inflammatory nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP), a relatively rare disorder that happens only during pregnancy.
* Alcoholic fatty liver diseases is a condition caused by lifelong heavy alcohol use.
In other words, substances found in the alcohol damage liver cells, promote inflammation and weaken your body's natural defenses. More precisely, the more alcohol that you drink, the more you damage your liver.
Alcoholic fatty liver disease is the earliest stage of alcohol-related liver disease.
Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.
On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, researchers elucidated the effects of stigmasterol and β-sitosterol on a high-fat Western diet (HFWD)-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
According to the results after 33 weeks of treatment* stigmasterol and β-sitosterol were effective in protecting the liver against HFWD-induced NAFLD.
* The parameters that contributed to the onset of NAFLD are triacylglycerols (TGs), phosphatidylcholines, cholesteryl esters, diacylglycerols, and free fatty acids (FFAs).
* The efficacy of stigmasterol and β-sitosterol int he alleviation of NAFLD was mainly associated with decreases in hepatic cholesterol, TGs with polyunsaturated fatty acids, and alterations of free hepatic FFA.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "phytosterols, at a dose comparable to that suggested for humans by the FDA for the reduction of plasma cholesterol levels, are shown to protect against NAFLD in this long-term (33-week) study".
Beta-Sitosterol may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of NAFLD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green Peas (Pisum Sativum) Inhibits the Risk of Atherosclerosis induced Heart Diseases
Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaques accumulated on the wall of the arteries, leading to narrowing the arteries in transporting oxygenated blood to the heart and other parts of the body.
Depending on the location of blood obstruction, atherosclerosis can induce different types of heart disease and stroke.
Plaque is the make of cholesterols, calcium, and other toxic substances, including cadmium.
According to the statistics provided by Atherosclerosis Open Acess, 32% of deaths account for atherosclerosis. 13.8% prevalence is among adults of 20 years and above. In 2010, coronary heart disease mortality rate was about 60%.
Atherosclerosis is a slow, progressive disease that may begin as early as childhood, caused by damage to the inner lining of the artery. However, the actual causes of the condition are debatable.
Long term high blood pressure, high cholesterol and triglycerides (a type of fat) in the blood. Particularly, in high levels of insulin in the blood from diabetes and in exposure to chemicals from smoking tobacco.
Patients with early stages of atherosclerosis may not experience any symptoms. However, as the disease progress, patients may have the symptoms of chest pain if the blockage occurs in an artery of the heart (coronary artery) and leg cramps during exercise or walking if the blockage occurs in the legs.
In the advanced stage, if atherosclerosis can lead to a heart attack and stroke, respectively.
Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalaya Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.
On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with arterial plaques accumulation, researchers investigated the impact of a diet rich in green and yellow vegetables on the development of atherosclerosis.
The study included a mouse model of atherosclerosis, randomized into 2 diet groups: 1) a vegetable-free control diet (n = 53) and 2) the same diet with 30% (w:w) replaced by an equal-parts mixture of freeze-dried peas, green beans, broccoli, corn, and carrots (n = 54), for 16 weeks.
According to the tested analysis,
* Aortic atherosclerosis estimated by cholesteryl ester content, was reduced 38% (P < 0.001) in mice fed the vegetable-rich diet.
* Plasma total cholesterol (-12%), VLDL + ILDL cholesterol (-32%), serum amyloid A (-37%), and body weight (-7%) (all P < 0.01) were also lower in vegetable-rich diet mice at the end of the treatment period. comapred to control.
* In a regression model, a vegetable-rich diet demonstrated antiatherogenic effects of the vegetable diet without explaining the levels of plasma lipoproteins or body weight.
Based on the results, scientists said, " ...a diet rich in green and yellow vegetables inhibits the development of atherosclerosis and may, therefore, lead to a reduction in the risk of coronary heart disease".
Taken altogether, green peas may be considered a functional food for the prevention of atherosclerosis induced heart diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bioactive Compound Sinigrin Protects Us Against Microbial Infection
Sinigrin may be used as a natural and bioactive compound against microbial infection before it can spread, according to studies.
Microbial infection is a disease caused by microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, or parasites.
Microbial infection includes 4 different stages
* Stage 1 or incubation stage
In stage 1, harmful microorganisms after successfully entering the host start to incubate on the specific site by the multiplying organism to reach a population, leading to an early stage of symptoms.
* Stage 2 or prodromal stage
After successfully multiplying, the organisms start to show symptoms of illness, depending on the location of the infection.
* Stage 3 or acute stage
The numbers of microorganism have grown exponentially, leading to very pronounced symptoms, also depending on the location and organ being infected.
* Stage 4 or convalescence stage is the recovery stage. The microorganism starts to decrease or are wiped out from the host.
In most cases, the recovery stage is the result of the use of antibiotics. The length of the 4 stages of microbial infection can be vary depending on the host immune system.
Most healthy adults can be recovered quickly without using antibiotics.
However, if the immune system or antibiotics used cannot wipe off all the micro invader in a specific time, approximately 3 to 8 weeks, it will lead to the compromise of the immune system, leading to chronic infection, such as asthma, airway inflammation, pneumonia, and other respiratory diseases.
Dr. Garth L. Nicolson in the differentiation of diseases associated with chronic infection, said, "Some infections, such as those caused by certain Mycoplasma and Chlaymdiaspecies that are invasive and are found in respiratory epithelial cells are able to suppress immune responses by suppressing the ability of pulmonary macrophages to ingest and kill these infectious agents".
Researchers on seeking a natural compound for the prevention and treatment of antimicrobial infection examined the ability of Listeria (L.) monocytogenes to convert glucosinolates into antimicrobial isothiocyanates.
During both tests with deodorized (myrosinase-inactivated) mustard extracts (10 d at 20 °C) or with purified sinigrin (21 d at 20 °C) L. monocytogenes only inhibited when exogenous myrosinase was added.
Pure sinigrin, oriental or yellow mustard extracts incorporated in polyvinyl polyethylene glycol graft copolymer (PPG) films containing 3, 5 and 6% (w/w) of the corresponding glucosinolate showed a 100% of microbial inhibition at 70 days.
The yellow mustard extract was less inhibitory and the pure sinigrin showed a significantly lesser antimicrobial activity in the absence of L. monocytogenes.
These results strongly suggested that L. monocytogenes played a key role in enhancing the antimicrobial activity of pure sinigrin and the yellow mustard extract.
In the test of tested on Escherichia coli O157:H7 using the nanocomposite carboxymethyl cellulose films containing sinigrin (SNG), prepared by stirring 2% (w/v) carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and 2% (w/v) glycerol (as a plasticizer) in distilled water with or without SNG (an antimicrobial precursor) as a 99% pure reagent (pSNG) or as a crude extract (cSNG), transparent nanoparticulate carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) films containing sinigrin (SNG), an antimicrobial precursor, controlled surface contamination of packaged fresh beef by the pathogen Escherichia coli O157:H7 stored at 8°C.
Furthermore, the films with nanoparticulation that carried pure SNG or the naturally occurring SNG in Oriental mustard were significantly more antimicrobial compared to similar films without nanoparticulation.
Dr. Herzallah S, the lead scientist said, " films without sinigrin were not antimicrobial" and "nanoparticulation of the packaging film enhanced delivery of the antimicrobial incorporated within the film".
Taken altogether, sinigrin a bioactive ingredient in cruciferous vegetables may be considered a functional supplement for the prevention and treatment of microbial infection pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
However, intake of bioactive in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care, as liver toxicity may be induced if overdosed.

Cabbage Protects the Blood Vessel Against Vascular Inflammation
Blood vessels formed part of the circulatory system are the tubular structure including a vein, artery, or capillary which carries the blood through the tissues and organs pumped by the heart.
Atherosclerosis is characterized by chronic inflammation of the vascular wall.
Chronic vascular inflammation has been found to cause historical changes in the blood vessel walls, leading to blood vessel wall thickening, weakening, narrowing or scarring on orchestrating blood flow restriction, resulting in organ and tissue damage.
Vasoprotection is the process to improve the function of the blood vessels, including the use of the herbal and natural remedy.
Inflammation is a natural reaction of the immune system's self-protection to remove harmful stimuli, including damaged cells, irritants, pathogens... from our body.
Acute inflammatory inflammation is a result of the over-response of the immune system after sensing the injury or damage of the body through activating the protein associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
The production of proinflammatory cytokines induced by the immune response is to kill the invasive pathogens, which try to enter the body through the wound.
In the acute phase of infection, the immune system in the stimulating production of proinflammatory cytokines may induce overproduction of these cytokines can cause death or damage to the nearby cells, leading to scar formation and symptoms of localized swelling, redness and fever.
Chronic inflammation is a serious condition caused by the immune system to adapt to the new change due to its inability to kill all the invasion within a set of times.
Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem of which is crowded a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.
With an aim to find natural food that inhibits inflammation, researchers examined the anti-inflammatory activities of an anthocyanin-rich extract from red Chinese cabbage (ArCC).
According to the inhibitory effects in cultured endothelial cells and hyperlipidemic apolipoprotein E-deficient mice, ArCC treatment suppressed monocyte adhesion to tumor necrosis factor-α, the pro-inflammatory cytokines -stimulated endothelial cells.
Furthermore, ArCC's also processed the ability to downregulate the expression and transcription of endothelial adhesion molecules associated with the increased response to cytokines and other inflammatory mediators.
Moreover, the regulation of adhesion molecules was accompanied by transcriptional inhibition of nuclear factor-κB, which restricted cytoplasmic localization in triggering inflammation.
Additionally, Administration of ArCC (150 or 300 mg/kg/day) inhibited aortic inflammation in hyperlipidemic apolipoprotein E-deficient mice,
More precisely, ArCC markedly lower leukocyte infiltration, reduced plaque formation and lowered concentrations of blood inflammatory cytokines compared to control mice.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, " ...the consumption of anthocyanin-rich red Chinese cabbage is closely correlated with lowering the risk of vascular inflammatory diseases.".
Taken altogether, Korean cabbage kimchi may be used for the treatment of vascular inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Lycopene, the Anti-Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) Phytochemical
Acid Reflux or heartburn is a condition characterized by the going back up of acidic stomach contents to the esophagus.
Most cases of acid reflux are happened immediately after eating causing a burning sensation or pain in the lower chest area.
According to the statistics, in the US, approximately, 20% of people with acid reflux will develop gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
More than 65% of people who suffer from acid reflux are 40 years old or older. And, 15 to 30 5 of the U.S. population has GERD.
There is no single cause of GERD. Epidemiologically, eating large meals or lying down right after a meal, snacking close to bedtime, smoking, being overweight or obese, overeating certain foods such as citrus, tomato, chocolate, mint, garlic, onions, or spicy or fatty foods are some prevalent factors associated with the risk of GERD.
Furthermore, long-term intake of certain medications such as bronchodilators for asthma, progestin for birth control or to treat abnormal menstrual bleeding, sedatives for insomnia and anxiety, calcium channel blockers for high blood pressure.
First-time pregnancy women may also experience GERD caused by increasing levels of hormones combined with pressure from the growing fetus.
Dr. P J Kahrilas and colleagues in examing the smoking risk associated with the onset of GERD wrote, "Studies were done to evaluate the lower oesophageal sphincter function of chronic smokers compared with non-smokers and to ascertain the acute effects of smoking on the sphincter and the occurrence of acid reflux".
And, "The mechanisms of acid reflux during cigarette smoking were mainly dependent upon the coexistence of diminished lower oesophageal sphincter pressure. Fewer than half of reflux events occurred by transient lower oesophageal sphincter relaxations. The majority of acid reflux occurred with coughing or deep inspiration during which abrupt increases in intra-abdominal pressure overpowered a feeble sphincter".
Therefore, if you currently a smoker, your risk GERD is substantially higher compared to non-smokers.
Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,
Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), researchers examined the role of lycopene on experimental reflux esophagitis.
Selected rats included in the study groups of rats induced esophagitis treated by lycopene (50 and 100 mg/kg, po) and pantoprazole (30 mg/kg, po).
Based on the tested analysis, treatment with lycopene showed physiological protection when scrutinized for pH, acidity (total and free), the volume of gastric juices and esophagitis index.
Furthermore, lycopene also protected the esophagus tissue by inhibiting the expression of oxidative stress against lipid and protein peroxidation and enhancing the production of the enzymatic activity of SOD and catalase.
Moreover, levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines were also diminished observed in the lycopene treatment group.
The efficacy of lycopene in the protection of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) was dose-dependent.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "lycopene can impart momentous protection against experimental esophagitis by wrapping up the reactive oxygen species and through dual inhibition of the arachidonic acid pathway".
Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green-Plant Membrane inhibits the Onset of Hypertriglyceridemia
Triglycerides are accumulated in the blood for future use by converting any unused calories.
In other words, triglycerides are an ester derived from glycerol and three fatty acids (from tri- and glyceride).
Overexpression of hyperglyceridemia is found to patients with atherosclerosis even without the presence of high cholesterol levels, and predispose.
Hypertriglyceridemia is a condition characterized by high levels of triglycerides in the blood.
Hypertriglyceridemia can also be accumulated to the arterial wall or combined with other substances to form plaque that narrows the arteries in transporting rich oxygenated blood to the heart and other parts of the body, leading to the onset of atherosclerosis.
Primary hypertriglyceridemia is found in 5% of patients associated with genetic preposition compared to 95% of secondary hypertriglyceridemia found in obese metabolic syndrome, diabetes,... patients.
Treating hypertriglyceridemia is difficult, as the condition is frequent coexistence with other conditions that affect cardiovascular disease risks, such as high levels of low-density lipoprotein, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes.
In severe cases of hypertriglyceridemia, patients may also experience the complication of acute pancreatitis, independent of the risk of CVD.
On finding a potential wholefood for the treatment of diabetes, researchers examined the effects of the once-daily intake of the green-plant membrane with dietary oil on postprandial hypertriglyceridemia in vitro and in vivo.
In vitro, green-plant membrane-bound hydrophobic bile acids but did not inhibit pancreatic lipase activity.
The green-plant membrane in rats, oral fat tolerance tests, increased serum triglycerides levels were significantly reduced.
Moreover, fecal total lipid and bile acid volumes were significantly increased in rats that administered 200 mg/mL green-plant membrane.
Based on the evidence, researchers said, "...green-plant membrane with dietary oil inhibits dietary fat absorption via promotion of bile acid excretion in feces and the effectiveness of eating green-plant membrane, such as green leafy vegetables, with meals".
Taken altogether, the green-plant membrane may be considered a functional food for the prevention of hypertriglyceridemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.
The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.
Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reduction partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.
Liver disease is a process of reduced function of the liver acutely or gradually.
Liver cancer is a chronic liver disease associated with irregular cell growth that starts in the cells on the surface of the liver's inner lining tissue, before penetrating into deeper layers to form tumors through cell proliferation.
Liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.
According to the Canadian Liver Foundation, approximately one in ten Canadians, or more than 3 million people in Canada has some form of liver disease.
Believe it or not, 95% of deaths from liver disease are due to chronic hepatitis B and C, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and liver cancer, including 25% of obese patients.
The most common signs and symptoms of liver disease are jaundice, abdominal pain, and swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine color, pale stool color, or bloody or tar-colored stool and tendency to bruise easily.
Primary liver cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the liver tissue as a result of the alternation of cell DNA.
According to the statistics, in 2019, approximately, 42,030 adults (29,480 men and 12,550 women) in the United States will be diagnosed with primary liver cancer.
Believe it or not, since 1980, the incidence of liver cancer has tripled. Between 2006 and 2015, the number of people diagnosed with primary liver cancer is increased by approximately 3% annually.
Oleanolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belonging to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in honey mesquite, garlic, java apple, clove, etc.
On finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer activity researchers examined the anti liver cancer effects of a natural compound oleanolic acid.
The study included human HepG2 liver cancer cells that were treated with various concentrations of oleanolic acid for 24 h.
According to the results of the analysis,
* Oleanolic acid decreased the viability of the liver cancer HepG2 cells and exhibited an IC50 of 30 µM.
* Oleanolic acid exerted very low toxic effects on normal liver cells AML12 cells and exhibited an IC50 of 120 µM.
* Furthermore, oleanolic acid also caused remarkable changes in the morphology of the HepG2 cells and inhibited their colony formation potential.
* Moreover, oleanolic acid triggered G2/M arrest and prompted apoptosis of the HepG2 cells.
* Additionally, oleanolic acid also increased the apoptotic cells from 2.2% in control to around 35% at 30 µM concentration.
* Oleanolic acid also suppressed the migration and invasion of the liver cancer cells.
Collectively, researchers said, "The results of the current research revealed that oleanolic acid can be a molecule that may be utilized in the treatment of liver cancer in the future".
Taken altogether, oleanolic acid may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale) Promotes Gastric Emptying and Smooth Muscle Motility
The digestive system including the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder processes the function to digest foods and transfer the nutrients and fluids to the body's needs.
There is no single cause of the gastrointestinal disorder. Researchers suggested that the cause of the disorder can be attributed directly to the digestive system, or other systemic problems that facilitate the onset of disease.
However, according to the epidemiological studies, bacterial infection, viral infection, inflammation, muscle dysfunction, gallstones, stress, and intake of certain anti-inflammatory drugs are associated with the onset of the acute and chronic digestive disorders.
Dietary factors also play an important in the reduction and promotion of digestive dysfunction. People who are overeating, eating too much fatty food, not consuming enough fiber, and consuming too much alcohol and smoking are at a higher risk of digestive diseases, including ulcers and gastric acid reflux.
Gastric emptying is a test that measures the time that takes for food to empty from the stomach and enter the small intestine. The test is used to find out why your child is vomiting, having stomach pain or not gaining weight.
Gastrointestinal motility is the contraction of the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract.
The gastroprotective effect is a process involved enhancing the function of the digestive system against the harmful organisms in induced chronic digestive disorder.
People with digestive problems may experience certain stomach discomfort, including bloating. constipation. diarrhea. heartburn, nausea and vomiting,.......and belly pain.
Untreated digestive problems over the long term can induce serious ailments of chronic illnesses, as the digestive system no longer performs its functions in provided nutrients and fluids to the needs of the body's cells and tissue.
The results of malnutriments over a long period of time can lead to weakened immune defense and reduced levels of antioxidants produced by tissues of the body in fighting against pathogens,
Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.
On finding a natural ingredient for the improvement of digestive functioning, scientists examined the effects of Taraxacum officinale (TO) is a traditional herbal medicine on gastric emptying (GE) and smooth muscle motility.
According to the administration of ethyl acetate fraction (EA), n-butanol fraction (BF), and aqueous fraction (AF) prepared in succession from 70% ethanol extract (EE) of TO in phenol red meal adopt mice,
* The percentage of GE was 48.8 ± 6.1% (vehicle control), 75.3 ± 6.5% (cisapride positive control), 68.0±6.7% (EE), 53.3±6.0% (EA), 54.1±6.3% (AF), and 86.0±6.5% (BF).
* Furthermore, BF was most effective in accelerating GE, compared to others.
* Moreover, the stimulatory effect of BF on GE was also supported by the observation that BF increased spontaneous contraction of gastric fundus and antrum and decreased the spontaneous motility of pyloric sphincter in vitro.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "BF seems to be a promising prokinetic agent. BF-induced increase in the contraction of fundus and antrum contributes to an increase in the intra-gastric pressure. BF-induced decrease in the motility of pyloric sphincter contributes to a decrease in the resistance of food from the stomach to the small intestine"
And "The acceleration of GE by BF is likely to be exerted through cholinergic stimulation".
Taken altogether, Dandelion that processed the aforementioned chemical compounds may be considered a gastric emptying and smooth muscle motility remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry in the Promotion of Digestive Health
The digestive system included the gastrointestinal tract, the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder play a critical role to maintain the body normal function by providing nutrients and fluids to the body and remove waste through the secretary system.
Digestion is a process of the digestive system by breaking down food for nutrients through mechanical and enzymatic action.
Gut Microbiota is a community of microorganisms living in the gastrointestinal tract.
Under normal conditions, gut microbiota plays a critical role in overall health, including improving the absorption of the dietary nutrients of the digestive system, protecting the body against xenobiotics and drug toxicity through facilitating the excretion.
Furthermore, the gut microbiota also involved in the maintenance of the structural integrity of the gut mucosal barrier, gut microbiota enhances the epithelial cells with a function to protect the intestine against invasive pathogens and ensure the function of intestinal in nutrients adsorption.
In immunomodulation, gut microbiota interacts with the immune system against inflammatory immune disorders and inhibits the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.
However, imbalanced of the ratio of gut microbiota may have a negative on human health and diseases.
Dr. Yu-Jie Zhang wrote, "Gut bacteria are an important component of the microbiota ecosystem in the human gut, which is colonized by 1014 microbes, ten times more than the human cells. Gut bacteria play an important role in human health, such as supplying essential nutrients, synthesizing vitamin K, aiding in the digestion of cellulose, and promoting angiogenesis and enteric nerve function".
And, "However, they can also be potentially harmful due to the change of their composition when the gut ecosystem undergoes abnormal changes in the light of the use of antibiotics, illness, stress, aging, bad dietary habits, and lifestyle. Dysbiosis of the gut bacteria communities can cause many chronic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism".
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of digestive health, researchers examined the effect of Vaccinium berry fruit in modulating gut microbiota function.
According to the tested differentiation, cranberry anthocyanidins only interfered with the colonization of the gut by Escherichia coli in vitro but also attenuated gut barrier dysfunction caused by dietary insults in vivo.
The efficacy of cranberry anthocyanidins in the promotion of gut microbiota in the flavor of the good bacterias was attributed by the synergic activity between these proanthocyanidins, other cranberry components such as isoprenoids and xyloglucans.
Moreover, cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites also have a strong effect on bacterial adhesion, coaggregation, and biofilm formation that may contribute clinical benefits on gastrointestinal and urinary tract infections,
Additionally, cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites also processed strong anti-inflammatory actions by mediating the gut microbiome.
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of the digestive health, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Broccoli' Sulforaphane (SF) In the Prevention of Colitis
Colitis is a medical condition of inflammation of the large intestine, including the colon, caecum, and rectum.
Types of colitis according to the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, are including
microscopic colitis, ischemic colitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticula, radiation colitis, diversion colitis, eosinophilic colitis, and Behcet's colitis.
There is no exact cause of colitis. Certain risk factors such as colon infection, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), ischemic colitis, allergic reactions, and microscopic colitis have been found to increase the risk of the onset of the condition.
The most common symptoms of colitis are totally depending on the types, including abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, with or without blood in the stool.
The most common risk factors associated with the onset of colitis are Medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and atrial fibrillation aging, genders, smoking, depression, and psychosocial stress and family history.
Other risk factors may also contribute to the incidence of colitis, according to the study by Service d'Epidémiologie et de Santé Publique, in a multivariate model are familial history of inflammatory bowel disease (odds ratio (OR) 4.3 (95% confidence interval 2.3-8)), breastfeeding (OR 2.1 (1.3-3.4)), bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccination (OR 3.6 (1.1-11.9)), and history of eczema (OR 2.1 (1-4.5)), disease during pregnancy (OR 8.9 (1.5-52)), and bedroom sharing (OR 7.1 (1.9-27.4)).
Conventionally, besides treating colitis with antibiotics, certain medications also are prescribed to improve the symptoms and quality of life of the patients, including anti-diarrheal medications.
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The vegetable has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.
On finding a potential plant that process anti-colitis activity researchers compared the effects of broccoli-derived nanoparticle (BDN) and SFN on three mouse colitis models.
According to the data collected from the experiment, orally given nanoparticles isolated from broccoli extracts protected mice against colitis by-mediating the activation of 5'-adenylic acid-activated protein kinase (AMPK) associated with cellular energy homeostasis.
In the immune analysis, BDN prevented the dendritic cells (DCs) to act as messengers between the innate and the adaptive immune systems in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in C57BL/6 (B6) mice by targeting dendritic cells (DCs) activation and inducing DC tolerance.
Compared to BND, DCs pre-pulsed with SFN also prevented DSS-induced colitis in B6 mice,, similar to those of BND.
Taken altogether, broccoli derived nanoparticle (BDN) or SFN isolated from broccoli may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of colitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cucumber's Cucurbitacin B (CuB) Blocks the Skin Cancer Proliferation in Vitro
Skin cancer is a chronic and medical caused cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.
Most cases of skin cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining, before proliferating to other tissues through cell cycle division.
Compared to normal cells with a limit of cycle division, the cancer cell can divide indefinitely. Some tumors can also stimulate the production of the new vessels to provide them with additional energy from the preexist vessel.
Most common types of skin cancer are
* Basal cell cancer
It is the most common type of skin cancer as a result of abnormal growth of the cells in the lowest layer of the epidermis, accounting for more than 90% of all skin cancer in the U.S.
* Squamous cell cancer
Squamous cell cancer arises from the uncontrolled multiplication of transformed malignant cells in the middle layer of the epidermis.
* Melanoma
Melanoma is a result of malignancy of melanocytes, which are the cell produced dark pigment for your skin.
Most common symptoms of skin cancer are abnormal skin patches, such as flat, scaly, brown or flesh-colored patches, a white, waxy scar-like sore, scaly red skin lesion, skin bump or lump, sore that won't heal, unintentional weight loss and non-healing ulcer, especially on lip or ears.
If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.
With an aim to find a natural compound that processes anti-skin cancer property, researchers investigated the cucurbitacin B (CuB) effect, a major compound found in cucumber on cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC).
According to the tested analysis, CuB inhibited 50% growth (ED50) of the CSCC cell lines (SRB1, SRB12, SCC13, COLO16) in liquid culture at 4 x 10(-7)-10(-5) M.
At 10(-7) M, CuB inhibited nearly all of the CSCC clonogenic cells used in the study through cell cycle arrest.
Interestingly, the injection of Cub exerted cancer cell morphologic changes within 60 min. Moreover, Cub (10(-8)-10(-6) M, 3-24 h) was effective in inhibiting the proteins associated with SRB1 and SRB12 cell lines proliferation by disrupting the cell cycle division.
The migration of SRB1 and SRB12 cells was also suppression by the injection of 10(-7) M CuB.
Most importantly, CuB exerted the synergistic potentiation of the anti-proliferative effect of cisplatin in CSCC.
In other words, CuB suppressed the cancer cell progression linearly in a dose-dependent manner through its G2/M cell cycle arrest
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "CuB has a prominent anti-proliferative activity on CSCC cells".
Taken altogether, cucumber processed a high amount of CuB may be used for the treatment of skin cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of CuB in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cucumber's cucurbitacin B (CuB) Processes Immune Modulatory and Anti-Inflammatory Properties
Inflammation is a natural defense of the human body against the invasion of harmful microorganisms.
In other words, the immune response of the first line defense macrophages after receiving information about skin or tissue damage from the brain stimulates the production of blood palette to cover the wound and pro-inflammatory cytokines to kill off invaders which may enter the body.
Most cases of the small wound are stoped in the acute phase of infection and the wound starts to heal itself.
In a large wound, some stitches are needed accompanying by the injection of antibiotics.
However, if the inflammation persists due to overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines, it can lead to the death of nearby healthy cells, causing the formation of scars.
In some cases, immune system response may also be compromised with the presence of harmful bacteria or viruses due to its inability to kill off all pathogens in a set period of time, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation.
The continued production of pro-inflammatory cytokines over the long-term can result in protein, lipid and cell damage and alternation of cell DNA causing the onset of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
Some researchers suggested without knowing more of the nature of the chronic low-grade inflammatory disease, the use of NSAIDs may cause harm to the patients.
Dr. Adler UC in the concerns about the use of NSAIDs for the treatment of chronic low-grade inflammatory disease, explained, "Pro-inflammatory cytokines and their chronic effect - low-grade inflammation - have been associated with diverse chronic conditions".
And, "current data on the role of pro-inflammatory cytokines and that the use of NSAIDs to treat chronic low-grade inflammation can produce a contrary, rebound effect, as anticipated by Hahnemann. By diverting from the "palliative action-rebound effect" course".
The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.
With an aim to find a natural compound that processes anti-inflammatory property, researchers investigated cucurbitacin B (CuB) effect, a major compound found in cucumber on parameters related to antigen presentation and T-cell activation.
On basal and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation, CuB inhibited significantly the LPS-a expression of MHC II (antigen-presenting cells), CD40, CD54, and CD80 associated with immunodeficiency with hyper-IgM.
Furthermore, the injection of CuB also suppressed the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species and blocked the activation of pro-inflammatory mediators, such as nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-12, and IL-1β, without inducing any cytotoxicity.
The finding suggested that CuB possesses immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects against disease involved in inflammation.
In other to reveal more information anti-inflammatory activity of CuB, researchers evaluated the chemical ability to scavenge free radicals such as hydroxyl radical, superoxide anions and singlet oxygen.
According to the tested assays, CuB exerted a broad spectrum radical-scavenging capacity surpasses those of grape-seed extract, wheat, alfalfa, and ginkgo Biloba extracts.
Cucurbitacins not only inhibited lipid peroxidation and oxidation but also exhibited the anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties through their derivatives 23, 24 dihydrocucurbitacin and cucurbitacin.
In other words, CuB inhibited the expression of TNF in macrophages and lymphocytes involved in immune response and the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators such as nitric-oxide synthase-2 and cyclooxygenase-2.
Dr. Olayinka Oridupa, the lead scientist said, "It is general knowledge among researchers working with natural medicinal products that any of the cucurbitacins have the attributes or the potential to become fully patented as an anti-inflammatory...drug".
Taken altogether, cucumber processed a high amount of CuB may be used for the treatment of inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of CuB in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Alliin Protects The Heart Against the Risk Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction)
Myocardial infarction or heart attack is a medical emergency caused by a reduced and stopped blood flow to the heart.
The most common symptoms of heart attacks are chest pain or discomfort that affects the shoulder, arm, back, neck, or jaw accompanied by shortness of breath, dizziness, faintness, or nausea.
Epidemiologically, episodes of angina are considered an early warning sign that a heart attack may be coming.
In angina, blood flow is stopped than restored, pain recedes within minutes, and the heart is not permanently damaged. However, in some cases, angina may cause some heart muscles to damage without affecting the heart functioning.
Unfortunately, heart attacks without any early warning signs were found in proximately 25% of the patients.
According to statistics, in the US, every year, approximately 790,000 Americans have a heart attack, including 580,000 cases of a first heart attack and 210,000 cases of a recurrent heart attack.
Dr. Fatemeh Kiani, the lead scientist in the examination of the risk factors involved in myocardial infarction said, "Results showed that 70% of patients were women and only 30% were men. 48% of them were illiterate and patients' mean age was 58.3".
And, "17% of patients (coronary artery diseases history), 25.5% (hypertension history), 26% (diabetes history), 15.5% (cholesterol history), 13% (smoking) and 3% have reported CABG history. The majority of people who referred had inferior MI (40.4%). 67.1% normal rhythm, 2.8% atrial fibrillation and 16% had ventricular tachycardia".
In other words, gender, aging, smoking and medical conditions associated with increased risk of heart disease are some of the most common risk factors found in patients with myocardial infarction.
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
On finding a potential compound for the prevention of heart attack, researchers examined S-allyl cysteine sulfoxide (SACS, alliin) preventive effect in isoproterenol (ISO)-induced myocardial ischemia in an animal model.
The study included male Wistar rats pretreated with SACS (40 and 80 mg kg(-1)) orally for 5 weeks followed by ISO (150 mg kg(-1)) administered subcutaneously at an interval of 24 h for 2 days.
The activities of beta-D-N-acetyl-glucosaminidase, beta-galactosidase, beta-glucosidase, and acid phosphatase in serum and the heart of ISO-induced rats.associated with mitochondrial dysfunction in the heart were increased substantially.
Furthermore, the declined of Na(+)K(+)-ATPase and increased Ca(2+)- and Mg(2+)-ATPases activity significantly (p < 0.05) associated with association of the risk of myocardial infarction were also found ISO-induced rats.
However, pretreatment of alliin 40 and 80 mg kg(-1)) showed a significant (p < 0.05) effect in all the aforementioned biochemical parameters.
In other words, alliin inhibited all risk factors involved in the onset of a heart attack.
In order to reveal more information about alliin anti hear attack activity, researchers investigated the preventive role of SACS on some biochemical parameters, glycoproteins, and hematology in experimentally induced myocardial infarction in rats.
Treatment of alliin followed by myocardial infarction induced in rats by subcutaneous injection of isoproterenol (ISO) (150 mg kg(-1)) at an interval of 24 h for 2 days, not only inhibited all parameters aforementioned study but also inhibited the levels/concentrations of glycoproteins in the heart.
Moreover, levels of pro-inflammation associated with immune response caused by ISO associated with the risk heart attacks were also significantly reduced by pretreatment of alliin.
Based on the results, Dr. Sangeetha T, the lead scientist said, "Oral pretreatment with SACS (40 and 80 mg kg(-1)) daily for a period of 35 days showed a positive effect on all the biochemical parameters studied in ISO-induced rats".
Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of myocardial infarction,, depending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of myocardial infarction,, depending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane May Induce immune-Toxicity if Overdosed
The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprises the body's defense system against diseases. The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections.
It is one of the body's defense system against diseases.
Immune dysfunction is a chronic condition, depending on the parts of the immune system affected.
There are 2 types of immune dysfunction
* The underactive immune system is also known as the weakened immune system. People with the underactive immune system are susceptible to infection, recurrent infections.
The most common symptoms of the underactive immune system are infection including frequent and recurrent pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections, ear infections, meningitis or skin infections and Inflammation and infection of internal organs.
However, blood disorders, such as low platelet counts or anemia and digestive dysfunction are also some of the common symptoms found in patients with the underactive immune system.
* The overactive immune system is also known as autoimmune diseases. In this case, patients suffer diseases associated with the immune system that attacks the body tissues.
Immunomodulation is an action with a profound and positive effect in regulated immune response and function through activation of antibody formation or the inhibition of white blood cell activity.
On finding a potential plant that enhances immune functioning, researchers compared the effects of 3,3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM), a major product of indole-3-Carbinol isolated from genus Brassica, on various immune-modulatory activity in animal models and in vitro studies.
3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.
According to the tested analysis, the DIM treatment showed multiple immunotoxic effects in decreasing in various immune cells (F4/80(+), CD11c(+), CD19(+), and CD3(+) cells) in the spleen.
Furthermore, the DIM treatment also induced the expression of splenic white pulp atrophy, an increase in immune cell apoptosis, and decreased expression of various toll-like receptors (TLRs), a class of proteins that play a key role in the innate immune system.
The action of 3,3'-Diindolylmethane that modulates the immune functioning was attributed to the promotion of the caspase-3 activity and ratio of proteins associated with cell deaths and survivals in regulating programmed cell death or apoptosis.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "This new information about the immunotoxic roles of DIM in a newborn mouse model may provide valuable clues for the development of a safe supplement, especially one designed for human infants".
Taken altogether, DIM supplements may process immune toxic activity if overdosed.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Process Anti Chronic Diseases and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD Activity
Chronic diseases are medical conditions that last more than 3 months depending on the type of diseases.
In other words, chronic diseases generally cannot be prevented or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear.
According to the statistics, chronic diseases affect millions of people worldwide, leading to the death of 35 million people in 2005, including many young people and those in middle age.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.
Heart disease is a class of diseases associated with interruption of blood flow in the blood vessel or damage of the heart tissue, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction.
According to the statistics, heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US. Approximately 2000 people in the general population die of heart disease every day.
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of heart disease, that kills over 370,000 people annually.
The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the accumulation of plaques in the arteries, impeding the blood flow which carries the nutrients and oxygen to the heart, causing damage to the heart tissue and reduced function of the arteries.
In other words, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, weight, depression and family history associated with the early onset of plaques accumulated and impeding function of the arteries are the prevalent risk factors of cardiovascular diseases.
According to the statistic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the US with 90% of women having one risk factor.
Believe it or not, women are 4 times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer and 2/3 of women are not aware of heart disease is such a risk for them, according to the Jean Hailes for Women Health in the article cardiovascular health.
Many people know that tobacco use is associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer, but most of them do not know that smoking is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular diseases.
Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.
The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the
importance of the omega-6/omega-3 fatty acid ratio in patients with cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases.
According to the results of the experiment, excessive amounts of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and a very high omega-6/omega-3 ratio has been found to induce the pathogenesis of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and inflammatory and autoimmune disease.
Increased levels of omega-3 PUFA with the lower of omega-6 PUFA (a lower omega-6/omega-3 ratio), exerted the protective effects.
The ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 PUFA of 1/4 are associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases.
A ratio of 2.5/1 showed strong activity in reducing rectal cell proliferation in patients with colorectal cancer.
Furthermore, the lower omega-6/omega-3 ratio was associated with a decreased risk of CVD in women with breast cancer.
Most importantly, a ratio of 2-3/1 suppressed inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and a ratio of 5/1 had a beneficial effect on patients with asthma, whereas a ratio of 10/1 had adverse consequences.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " it is quite possible that the therapeutic dose of omega-3 fatty acids will depend on the degree of severity of disease resulting from the genetic predisposition".
And " A lower ratio of omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids is more desirable in reducing the risk of many of the chronic diseases of high prevalence in Western societies, as well as in the developing countries".
Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids together with low levels of omega-6 fatty acid may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases and CVD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
