Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica), the Anti-Cardiovascular Diseases Whole Food

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.

The heart formed part of the circulatory system is a muscular organ that pumps blood through the blood vessels to nourish the body tissues and organs.

Most cases of heart dysfunction are associated with the reduced function of the heart muscle, leading to reduce blood flow that facilitates heart failure and the backup of blood into the lungs or rest of the body.

Heart disease is a class of diseases associated with interruption of blood flow in the blood vessel or damage of the heart tissue, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction.

According to the statistics provided by the US government, heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US. Over 600,000 died of heart disease, every year including 370,000 people died of coronary heart disease (CHD), accounting for 1 in 4 deaths.

Believe it or not, women are 4 times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer and 2/3 of women are not aware of heart disease is such a risk for them, according to the Jean Hailes for Women Health in the article cardiovascular health.

The most common symptoms of heart disease are poor appetite, weight loss, shortness of breath, sudden collapse, blood clots and stunted growth found in children.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of heart disease, that kills over 370,000 people annually.

The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the accumulation of plaques in the arteries, impeding the blood flow which carries the nutrients and oxygen to the heart, causing damage to the heart tissue and reduced function of the arteries.

In other words, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, weight, depression and family history associated with the early onset of plaques accumulated and impeding function of the arteries are the prevalent risk factors of cardiovascular diseases.

Many people know that tobacco use is associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer, but most of them do not know that smoking is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular diseases.

Fig is a species of F. Carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding a natural whole food for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the cardioprotective effects of the aqueous extracts of Cydonia oblonga Mill. fruit (ACO) and Ficus carica L. fruit (AFC) against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity.

In cardiomyocytes toxicity that was induced in male Sprague Dawley rats by intraperitoneal (ip) injections of 2.5 mg/kg DOX 3 times per week for a period of 2 weeks induced heart failure,
* The injection of the extracts showed a strong effect on mitochondrial oxidative stress that inhibits the damage the mitochondria and dysfunction.

More precisely, ACO and AFC ameliorated mitochondrial dysfunction induced by the DOX3 in the isolated mitochondria and prevented mitochondrial reactive oxygen species formation.

* ACO and AFC ameliorated mitochondrial dysfunction in the isolated mitochondria and prevented mitochondrial reactive oxygen species formation associated with membrane lipid peroxidation, mitochondrial swelling, mitochondrial membrane potential collapse (%ΔΨm), and cytochrome c release.

* The antioxidant enzymes produced by the host such as glutathione levels and succinate dehydrogenase activity were significantly increased by the extracts.

In other words, ACO and AFC have beneficial effects against DOX cardiotoxicity which mediated by attenuating mitochondrial dysfunction.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " (...The results) can be suggested that quince and fig may increase the therapeutic index of DOX".

Taken altogether, common fig may be considered a natural anti-CVD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
