Blood pressure is the force of the blood pushing against the arterial walls. In high blood pressure, the heart has to work harder than normal to pump blood through the circulation system. Over time, high blood pressure has been found to cause damage to the heart and arteries.
Hypertension or high blood pressure is a condition characterized by persistent high blood pressure.
In the US approximately, one-third of the adults have high blood pressure, affecting over 77 million people in the country.
Additionally, among adults age 20 and older in the United States, in the non-Hispanic whites community, 33.4 percent of men and 30.7 percent of women are infected by the syndrome.
High blood pressure is a slowly developed condition. Unless the syndrome has caused damage to the blood vessel, otherwise symptoms cannot be detected.
High blood pressure can be acute or chronic. Acute high blood pressure most often occurs to people with sudden stress.
Acute high blood pressure can be caused by intense physical exercise. As the heart must pump harder to provide the needs of nutrients and oxygen.
Most cases of chronic high blood pressure are associated with an unhealthy lifestyle and chronic diseases such as kidney disease, leading to the onset of strokes and cardiovascular disease.
In other words, if you can control your diet, such as making changes to lifestyle, maintaining ideal weight and diet with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.
The cause of high blood pressure is a result of hardening and thickening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), due to the slow progression of plaques accumulated on the wall of the arteries.
According to the American Heart Association (AHA) patients with blood pressure that higher than 130 over 80 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) are considered to have hypertension.
Untreated chronic high blood pressure may induce complications of heart attack, stroke, and other health conditions.
Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.
The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, researchers examined the associations of dietary intake in childhood of the long-chain ω-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid with blood pressure parameters in children born with reduced birth weight.
According to the results from the data from 3457 children aged 8 to 15 years participating in the continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003-2004, 2005-2006, and 2007-2008, compared to normal birth weight children, systolic blood pressure was 1.1 mm Hg higher in those with reduced (<10th centile).
More importantly, at the baseline, reduced (<10th centile) birth weight children showed a higher systolic blood pressure of 1.1 mm Hg, compared with normal birth weight (≥ 10th centile) children.
Compared with children with the lowest tertile of intake, 354 children with reduced birth weight, with the highest tertile of dietary eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid intake showed a significantly lower systolic blood pressure (-4.9 mm Hg [95% confidence interval, -9.7 to -0.1]) and pulse pressure.
In other words, high-dietary intakes of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid are associated with lower systolic blood pressure and pulse pressure in children born with reduced birth weight.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "These data are consistent with the hypothesis that long-chain ω-3 fatty acids reduce blood pressure in those with impaired fetal growth".
Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids lower blood pressure, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
