Vitamin B1 is one of the members of the vitamin B complex, it is also known as thiamin or thiamine. It's most common form is a colorless chemical compound with the formula C12H17N4OS. It was discovered in 1910 by Umetaro Suzuki in Japan. It is a water soluble vitamin, therefore it can be stored in the body and is required to be taken regularly.

Thiamine Deficiency induced oxidative and  stress and the natural, regulated, destructive mechanism of the cell in the brain, which are known to contribute to the pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative diseases.

According to the joint study, lead by Shandong University School of Medicine, Thiamine deficiency is kown to cause a cascade of events including mild impairment of oxidative metabolism, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration, which are commonly observed in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease(AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and Huntington's disease (HD).

Dr. Liu D, the lead researcher said, " Recent research evidence indicates that TD causes oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and autophagy in the brain, which are known to contribute to the pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative diseases".

In mice study of SLC19A3 deficiency, also called thiamine metabolism dysfunction syndrome-2 (THMD2; OMIM 607483), researchers suggested that acute neurodegeneration caused by thiamine deficiency is preventable in most parts and high dose of thiamine prevents brain lesions and prolongs survival of Slc19a3-deficient mice, but reduced doses after treatment should be performed carefully to prevent recurrence after recovery of the disease.

There is no doubt that vitamib B1 deficiency is associated to risk of neuro- degenerative diseases. early detection and vitamin B1 treatment are most effective way to prevent the development of the diseases.
