Vitamin A, a bi-polar molecule formed by bonds between carbon and hydrogen, is a fat soluble vitamin which can not be stored in the liver but it can be converted from beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant. The levels of The levels of vitamin A may be associated to patients with Chronic leg ulcers. Risk of poor healing is found in patients with vitamin A deficiency.

Chronic leg ulcers refers to a injure in the skin below the level of knee with persisting for more than six weeks and with no tendency to heal after three or more months.

In a total of study of 17 patients with chronic leg ulcers (age range 47-90), fasting blood samples showed a lsignificantly lower levels of vitamin A (P < 0.0001) and carotenes. Increased consumption of nutritional elements in these patients may influence wound healing rates.

In regarded to other factors may also influence to the poor healing of patients with chronic leg ulcers,
Dr. Tobón J the lead researcher at the University of Washington said, "The relationships found between vitamins A and C and leg ulcer severity warrant further exploration" and "the nutritional status of patients with chronic venous leg ulcers (VLUs) who are overweight or obese and to explore the relationship between nutritional status and severity of venous ulceration".

Taken together, vitamin A deficiency caused by malnutrition may be associated to the chronic leg ulcer. Other factors such as other vitamins and trace minerals should be examined before  treatment proceeded.
